Ellie's Hot Dogs & Ice Cream

This place is pretty close to my inlaws house and I can't believe we have never tried them before. They are so good. Perfectly toasted potato buns on a roasted beef dog. Is like the perfect combination. They have a huge variety of options but you can also custom your own!. They do also have a bunch of tasty sides and lots of options to custom your dog. The guy that worked there was friendly and helpful. We mostly had custom hot dogs, they all were super good. My favourite custom one was with cheese, bacon and grilled onions. Please give it a try, you won't regret it!. My husband loved the slaw hot dog. I will definitely eat here again when I'm visiting the family.

My friend and I grabbed some hot dogs today at Ellie's. He tried the two chili dogs and he deemed them SOLID. I went for the slaw dog and a chili dog, and they were impressive. Back in high school, I worked at a hot dog shop, and I've never had anything quite like this since. The bun was wonderfully toasted and the hot dog itself was cooked to perfection. What topped it off was the fact that it was made of beef. Definitely a top-notch hot dog experience.

Probably the best hot dog I've had in RVA! Perfectly toasted buns and roasted hot dogs, with just the right amount of toppings - and you can customize! I'm a classic fan, so the RVA dog is my go-to. Our kids loved the octopus hot dogs, which are normally served on a bed of mac and cheese, but we substituted for a side of potato salad once. They now constantly request octopus (and jellyfish hot dogs). The potato salad was good. Standard fare. The mac and cheese has a deep flavor - it's not the gooey, kraft style mac and cheese, but definitely more homemade vibes. Ice cream was delicious Hershey's ice cream! We've had the hot fudge sundae with crazy vanilla (vanilla flavored, rainbow colored) as well as a moose track kids sundae. Each hot dog order comes with a pickle slice. The service here is wonderful! Seriously, so nice! Everything is made to order, so when it's just one person, there can be a slight wait, but they're so friendly, and the other patrons are just as nice. The prices are great, and there's an immediate cash discount. There's plenty of covered outdoor seating, and there are fans for when the weather is on the warm side. The tables are bolted, so you can't combine them if you have a larger party, but the built in bench seating and close proximity of the tables makes it still very easy for groups to gather. If you're in the area (for example, after swinging by Soar365), I highly recommend checking it out!

Staff was helpful!! Chili dog was classically done and pretty darn good--the steak dog was even better!! Oh yeah, they toast the hotdog buns!!!! Awesome touch! 🌭 They had jalapenos and hot sauce for added bonus points. Hot fudge sundaes were made with real hot fudge and not that runny syrup, which is, in fact, not a good replacement if you order hot fudge! Moose tracks and peanut butter ice cream was solid! Root beer float had the bottle of root beer on the side! Oh, and the spoons were hyper-color/temperature sensitive for the final cherry on top of greatness 🍒 🍦 🍨 Get out and support this place for sure!

Really happy to have found this spot. Who doesn't love a hot dog stand! And milkshakes too! Really appreciate the inclusion of the vegan hot dog on the menu, as that's a rarity. Prices were good for loaded dogs, patio is clean and shaded.

We got the two rva dogs with a drink and the two carolina dogs with a drink specials. Absolutely AMAZING. Then we got shakes for dessert. Also absolutely AMAZING. Prices were great, the staff were great, and the atmosphere was great. Will be coming back often!!

We just left Ellie's and I immediately had to write a review - it was that wonderful! We went for a special mother-son lunch with my toddler and it was absolutely perfect. Delicious meal for me, simple and yummy hot dog for him. Everyone was so kind and friendly. We will be definitely be returning!

This is my new favorite spot in Richmond! Highly recommend the octopus Mac and cheese! The hot dogs are so good and the buns remind me of Texas toast! Bonus they have a dog friendly patio and they sell pup cups!

Best hot dog I've had in a long time! Owner is very friendly and welcoming. He takes a lot of pride in his little spot! Cute outdoor covered patio. Dog friendly. Very affordable and the most important part-absolutely delicious!! They have a variety of specialty dogs or you can customize yours the way you like. We got one RVA dog (ketchup, mustard, onion, relish) one Carolina dog (coleslaw, chili, onion) and two with just mustard and onion. The hot dogs are 100% beef, the chili is so good and they're all served on a yummy potato roll. No skimping on toppings and a crisp dill pickle spear alongside. We will definitely be back to try their shakes. Tons of flavors to choose from.

Nice little unassuming spot right at 64 and Boulevard for some hot dogs and ice cream--either cups, cones or simple brownie sundaes. No frills. No exotic flavors. Standard favorites. Super nice staff and nice patio for enjoying your treats.

Everything here was completely on point! The service was friendly, helpful, and speedy. The hot dog variety was awesome and all the flavor combos were perfection! The grilled bun earned an imaginary sixth star-- leveled the full dog experience up in a major way! I appreciate the vegan hot dog option, though I didn't try one this time. Shout out to the chili on the hot dogs-- it was bonkers good. Again, I appreciated the dairy-free ice cream options, since I'm lactose intolerant gal. The pictured milkshake was decidedly dairy-full, but my husband said it was fantastic. There was ample patio space for the lunch crowd on a Thursday, as well as good parking. The ambiance was pleasant and calm, despite facing the road. Definitely check this spot out!

What a great concept! Hot dogs, chips and ice cream. You can't go wrong. The selection is exactly what you would expect from a solid hot dog place. Chili, sauerkraut, relish... etc. The staff is friendly, patient and helpful. You walk up to the window and order. There's plenty of seating in the covered area. Perfect for a quick lunch or anytime you have a hot dog craving bc that's a real thing.

This place is amazing. I drove past it a lot without noticing it, then ended up there w a friend and WOW, so quaint, so adorable, GREAT service, and hot dogs that took me right back to 1987.. don't miss this gem in northside.

She also let me taste the potato salad before I bought it . That was awesome because how many times have I bought something that I didn't like. I ordered a chili dog combo and added sauerkraut. I got the potato salad as my side because it was AMAZING and a Diet Coke to drink . The hot dog was delicious!! The prices are fair and appreciated. I'd like to add I love the patio area. Family friendly. Or for a cute date. Next craving for a hotdog will be at Ellie's!!

First this is a definition of a hole in the wall. Only outdoor seating. The staff is very respectable high school kids and greet you and even offer their tastes. I ordered the kraut dog and it was a nice flavor. They grill the dogs so that was a bonus. Wife got the Philly dog and little one had a spider dog. Def worth trying. Ice cream on a cold day was a fun treat but nothing more than just good ice cream.

Love the toasted split top bun. One of the better tasting hot dogs I've had in a while and I've been craving one like I had back home. The banana pudding shake - delish! Good service. Reasonable prices and pretty quick with the freshly prepared order. Love the front porch feel and there are fans to keep you cool if you want to sit out and eat.

My husband was picking up his car next door and I thought to myself "How perfect we can try Ellie's on their opening day!" I was super hungry so I picked getting a hot dog over ice cream, but they do have ice cream that looks yummy. My husband got the nacho dog and I got the steak dog. I like that the hot dogs are a good size and the bread was so tasty on the steak dog. The space is meant to come hang out, eat and bring your dog as well. Super friendly- dog patio! Friendly staff and fun music!

Super friendly staff and I love that they offer a veggie dog option, and ability to choose your own custom toppings for the picky eaters like me. Patio is pretty shaded and dog friendly, and you order at a window that's outside, so the whole ordering process and ordeal is easy if you have your pup, not to mention puppers get a whipped cream pup cup! Also major throwback to my childhood, I've longed for Crazy Vanilla ice cream for many years, tasted exactly like I remembered. My only request is--I wish they had cheese sauce for the dogs versus melting shredded cheese, but any cheese is good cheese so it's not a deal breaker.

Stopped by on a whim and glad we found this cute hot dog and ice cream shop. They have a cute outdoor patio with heat lamps (not needed when we visited but would be nice as the weather gets colder). They carry Hersey's ice cream - I got the better brownie batter and cookies n cream. Both were good but the brownie batter stole the show! They gave me an extra free scoop which I really appreciated.

Excellent veggie hot dogs and the toasted buns are first rate. The ice cream was fantastic too. Service was friendly and fast - We will definitely be returning.

I returned here and was delighted to get a hot dog with delicious coleslaw .The bun was much better than a generic hot dog bun. There were also a number of of use cream choices to include milkshakes.Great place.

This is the best place to get a hotdog in RVA. Their sauerkraut dogs are top notch, the potato buns are great, and you have to try a side of Mac and cheese. This place has the best soy hotdogs. This is a must eat place for a quick lunch.

I just had lunch at Ellie's. The hot dogs are great with a wonderful selection of toppings. I had the Carolina dog with chili and slaw and will be having it again next time. The owner is very personable and delivers a delicious product. It's a win-win!

Came for a rainy day treat and appreciated the covered seating! Got a brownie sundae and a pup cup. The patio is dog friendly and staff is very friendly too. Will come back soon to try the hot dogs!

Had the steak and cheese dog with potato salad. Really good food, fascility was very clean, friendly atmosphere and great service. was able to get in and out quickly for lunch as well. Cost me about 10 bucks for a great meal! Would definitely go back!

This place is as friendly as you can possibly imagine. The owner works it. The food is excellent. It's just hotdogs and ice cream but they're damn good hotdogs. I would recommend this place over any other hot dog place in Richmond.

Such a good experience here, end-to-end. A good selection of hot dogs with various combinations of toppings - and all elements are really good. The wiener is meaty and flavorful, and is nestled in a soft potato roll that has been grill-toasted - making just a plain hot dog here just right. Most recently I got a chili dog and added cole slaw. The chili was just mild enough to not overpower the rest of the condiments (mustard, onions, shredded cheese). The slaw was sweet and creamy. It all worked together perfectly. The proprietor, who takes your order at the window, is as nice a guy as you'd ever wish to meet and clearly loves what he does. Lots of covered outdoor seating offers a shady spot to hang out and enjoy a good hot dog.
