I had been an Elm patron since the day they opened their doors, stopping in at least once or twice a week to grab healthy eats. It was nice to see the same, friendly face of the security guard over the years, seemed like a nice guy. But at some point things got weird, the last two times I visited I was stared down by one of the employees, who conveniently positioned himself at the end of the isle while I shopped in produce, and stared at me for (I kid you not) 10 minutes straight. I had on yoga pants and workout gear. I mean, what was it that he had in his mind, that I would do! Stuff a plantain down my yoga pants????
I stopped patronizing Elm Wellness after that and switched to Lifethyme, where I wasn't treated like a criminal-while-shopping. But it doesn't end there.
I happened to stop into Elm one more time to grab a soy cheese product that my usual was out of. Again, because you can't make this up, I must stress how blatant the racism that I experienced was. But while I stood at the refrigerated section looking for the Daiya products that I was there to grab, the owner himself, Ken, came from his office, out to produce, to stand there and pretend as if he was fiddling with a cardboard box, all while intensely staring at me making my consumer decision. For as long as I stood there, he stood there. And stared at me. Like I was the creature from the Black Lagoon in person, shopping in his pristine little store.
No more. I never went back after that. Minorities beware of this business because that is NOT Elm Wellness, that's Elm Stress.
