The Elterwater Hideaway, Elterwater, Ambleside, Lake District, UK - Explore & Book

"Follow the unpromising-looking lane around the back of the pub in tiny but popular Elterwater in Langdale and you find this tucked-away cottage. In typical Lakeland style – a former quarryman’s cottage – with slate walls, four-square sash windows and pretty trellis porch it looks charmingly traditional. Step inside, however, and not only is it staggeringly smart and stylish – huge sofa, original artworks, expensive diffusers – but, somehow, bigger. The living space comfortably fits a chunky dining table, while there are two spacious bathrooms for the two double bedrooms. A clever designer’s eye has been at work: that of London-based Katharine Pooley, as much in demand in the Middle East and southern France as the UK for her elegantly sumptuousness style. This is certainly sumptuous for a humble cottage – indulgent marble bathrooms, for instance – but it’s also practical, warm and welcoming with lots of natural materials such as wood, wool and leather. It’s the attention to detail that’s a giveaway. Weary walkers (and dog-owners) will appreciate the underfloor-heated utility room, and there’s a phenomenally well-equipped kitchen for creative cooks. With its central location in the Lake District National Park, it's perfect for exploring local fell-walks, jolly Ambleside, Wordsworth’s Grasmere and Windermere’s lake cruises, then return to soak in the hot tub. Highs In the heart of the Lake District National Park it’s ideally placed for bagging a few Wainwright fells, exploring colourful towns and discovering the eponymous lakes Classy, immaculate, high-end design with luxurious touches and excellent attention to detail that nevertheless feels welcoming and restful A superbly equipped kitchen; even the fussiest cook will feel at home Feeling of privacy despite being in a popular, touristy village, and with a garden that’s scarcely overlooked Lows Only one room for eating, relaxing and chatting so everyone needs to be a) tolerant and b) tidy The bedrooms, while beautiful, are bijoux Children need to be well-behaved or constantly monitored; plenty of lovely objects just waiting to be knocked over The hefty damages deposit may add a slight tension to your holiday, particularly if you’re accident-prone" - Helen Pickles

Fantastic family room for 5 provided the perfect base to explore the surrounding area. |Loads of walks from the hostel like Cathedral Caves- worth a visit-|our 3 girls all primary school age managed the walk. |There’s an accessible flat walk along the river to a lovely cafe called Chesters- leaves from the National Trust car park. |We did paddle boarding on Windermere which was so much fun.|Shops and takeaways are 5-10 mins drive into Ambleside and similar to Lake Windermere. |There are pubs and hotel restaurants within walking distance but I would recommend the hostel breakfast and dinner- they’re really hearty, filling meals that set up before and after a day rambling around. There are wines and local beers on sale at reception. The sticky toffee pudding is non negotiable! |The family room sleeps 5 and has it’s own bathroom with shower.|The drying room is a great asset for wet swimming stuff. |The hostel has a calm and relaxed feel, guests are friendly and respectful and the place is pretty quiet after 9pm- so good nights sleep. |There’s fab views from outside with benches on the patio and in the garden.|Staff are knowledgeable and friendly.

Stayed at hostels all around Europe and this is one of my favorite. The common areas are spacious while still maintaining a cozy vibe that leads to lots of great conversations. The staff are absolutely wonderful. They take their time to go over your plans and help you plan even better. Breakfast was very affordable and the rooms/bathrooms were clean with incredible views. Location is great as it’s a quick bus to Ambleside which links you with so many other places. Highly recommend staying here.

I received a very warm welcome upon my arrival. I stayed for one night in a male only dorm. It was comfortable and had more than enough room for my bags and clothing. I was self catering and found the self catering kitchen, which had all the pots, pans and utensils that I needed. I did take advantage of a dessert from the hostel menu, and it was delicious. The bed was very comfortable. The drying room was excellent. The hostel is ideally placed in the village of Ellerwater and is a great base for exploring the Langdale valley. Overall a very very nice stay.

The staff were very welcoming and helpful and the room was adequate, but the washroom facilities and the breakfasts were both very poor. The ladies washroom seemed to have permanently wet counters and floor (presumeably because it was impossible to get out of the shower cubical with dry feet.) The breakfast options were poor quality and not well cooked. They did offer fresh fruit, which was a saving grace.

Excellent independent hostel with a personal touch. Andy, Charlie, Anthony and the team do a brilliant job in making you feel welcome and offering helpful advice on exploring the stunning area of the Langdales. I recommend the home cooked meals and breakfasts, not the generic offerings served up by other hostels. The sausage and mash, chilli and apple crumble are all delicious. Great location in the heart of Elterwater village near the brilliant Brittania pub and local 516 bus.

I absolutely love this hostel. The staff are extremely friendly & the food is very tasty. There are some nice places to wild swim I've stayed twice and have just re booked for later in the year. The beds are lovely and comfortable - what a gem! 100% recommend.

Perfect little stay off the beaten track. The room was clean and cosy and the facilities were everything that was required. The real stars here are the staff. They were absolutely lovely, and went above and beyond to help out and make sure people had everything they needed. Food available in the evening was great, and the breakfast was huge. Both were extra purchases but very reasonably priced. The self-catering kitchen was very well equipped and made meal prep very easy. The location was gorgeous and readily accessibly by public transport, and there were many walks accessible directly from the hostel or a short bus ride away. Highly recommend this hostel.

Really good Hostel, amazing service from all staff in the complex. Great shower rooms and common spaces. Location is good with a connecting service to Ambleside. Andy and Charlie were not only very kind but also extremely helpful in providing the best hospitality experience.
