On the Grid : Emerson Dorsch

"A contemporary art gallery in the heart of Wynwood. Miami New Times, mentions “this is happening”, now and always. This pioneering institution in Miami was the first to move to the city’s Wynwood District, bringing interactivity and music to the visual art experience is something Emerson Dorsch is well known for. From the exceptional art works to the atmosphere of the gallery space — its raw concrete floor, the exposed masonry block work, the nooks, everything about this place inside and out gives visitors the imagination and creativity to truly appreciate the art." - Moonlighter

"As Wynwood becomes ever more Son-of-SoHo-esque, the commercial march of contemporary art has begun to conquer Hialeah and Little Haiti. This is among the latest to relocate."

Google
Emerson Dorsch is a contemporary art gallery in Miami showing a wide range of artists and hosting cultural events. The gallery is quite active and the shows change quite regularly. There is a secure parking lot for the gallery in front of the space. They have a longstanding reputation for exhibiting established and emerging artists from South Florida, however their roster has many international artists as well. All around a great place to visit as there is always a new show to see!

Emerson Dorsch is one of the very first contemporary galleries to open in Wynwood and it continues to celebrate and support emerging and mid-career artists that are pushing boundaries and putting the world under a critical lens. They re-opened in April 2013 after a year of renovation and the gallery now has a main space, project room, library, and outside area that is clean, simple, and elegant. They represent and show a wide range of artists and styles; from local to international, abstract painting to video installation. They have been named one of the top art spaces in Miami for years and continue to uphold that reputation. I truly recommend!

This place is great. Its been around for years and was one of the first spaces to show Miami artists with no filter or pretension. Emerson Dorsch shows artists from South Florida, and beyond- and they recognize the importance of maintaining and fostering a community in fast changing city. Go to the openings and the talks - its worth it.

I have known Emerson Dorsch for 12 years and I was eagerly waiting for the opening of their new gallery. I was not disappointed; The new location is a reflection of their hard work and dedication to create a gallery that promotes the emerging arts, with spacious and bright spaces, including the rooftop where many creative activities will take place. Congratulations!!!

As last Sunday was a drizzling, my plans for spending the afternoon biking were cut short. A friend suggested a trip to Emerson Dorsch. This is a gallery that I had visited several times in its original Wynwood location in order to enjoy exhibits by Jenny Brillhart, a marvelous Miami-based artist for many years who is still represented by Emerson Dorsch. We headed off in the rain to check out Emerson Dorsch’s present home in Little Haiti. “Alosúgbe: A Journey Across Time,” by Onajide Shabaka is currently on exhibit. Sydney, the director at the gallery that afternoon, was wonderful. She explained the story behind the art. In brief, the artist’s work which is represented through photographs and collages, explores the African diaspora based on his many years of research in several Southern states as well as the Caribbean and Suriname. I highly recommend seeing this exhibit which runs through June 22. Indeed, I plan on making more frequent trips to Emerson Dorsch – why not take advantage of the marvelous galleries we are lucky to have here in Miami! Located next to Panther Coffee, there’s ample parking everywhere so there’s no excuse not to visit!

Yelp
I have a confession to make...I lied...about being an art fan. There's no way I can consider myself a connoisseur of the Miami Art Scene and not have stepped foot inside Dorsch Gallery until tonight! I stopped in tonight for the Bubble Art exhibit I heard on the talk thread, and went beyond the main entry hall. The raw concrete floor, the exposed masonry block work, the nooks, the crannies, the turns just beg for artistic creation. The exhibits tonight ranged from a cot made out of bank deposit bags - perfectly symbolic of the recession - to fluorescent colorful "stacks" and even a Great Pair of Legs on the floor. The coup d'grace is the outside patio where an local band was playing. It is an architectural hodgepodge of a patio slab, grass, and pavers. The patio roof itself is another marvel with two different types of wood framing. Of course, there was the requisite comp bar (which unfortunately I passed on tonight) and also a little picnic table outside. The acoustics weren't that great, but we're not a hoity toity concert hall but at a cool end-of-summer backyard party!

Yelp
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm very much at odds of how to handle this review because I really didn't enjoy my visit. I did enjoy the performance art from the opera singers, but I just didn't get the art. Hmph. The layout was acceptable. I honestly wouldn't have even noticed that it was a gallery because from the outside it looked like a garage. I barely recognized it as I walked past later in the evening after they were closed. Bottom Line: Give it a shot and see if you like the art, but I wasn't impressed.

Yelp
Solid Gallery Program. Newly renovated Wynwood space highlights the art work and feels like magical transport to Chelsea, NY. The Gallery has a long history (more than 20 years) and features many of Miami's finest local artists. The dynamic diversity of the gallery artists makes each new exhibition exciting. Its like a Chinese fortune cookie, you never know what to expect, but its always fun. The Gallery art broadly ranges from figurative painting to abstract sculpture to conceptual video. Dont wait for second Saturday, this is the Gallery to see when you want an overview of the art world.

Yelp
I moved to Miami in 2003, and almost instantly became a huge fan and regular visitor of the Dorsch Gallery. There is a solid community of local artists represented at the gallery as well as an influx of unfamiliar, emerging and established artists from all over, making each exhibition fresh and unpredictable. You can see that each artist is challenged to present work in a new light so that we can better understand, and become amazed by, the process behind each piece. The work is just as emotional as it is aesthetic. It is a wonderland for art collectors, and damn, I wish i had enough money to be one!!! Which brings me to what else makes the gallery so great - no matter who you are and where you are from, Dorsch Gallery welcomes you with open arms. A number of free events, whether lectures or performances or roundtables, lets members of the community soak up new knowledge about the arts and have a voice in shaping the Miami art scene. The gallery has been at it for years and years, always moving with the times and never getting old. A must-visit for travelers to Miami, and for those of you who live in Miami and haven't been - what?! are you crazy?! Go!
