En Japanese kitchen & Sake bar

We were there yesterday for my birthday. It was a while that I have been to En Kitchen. Food was not as I was expected. They had a new 8 course menu, which was not really my taste. The first course there was duck meat which was very hard to chew through, so eventually I spitted it out. The most delicious thing was the taro on the stick. The soup was nice, but not very special. Sashimi was nice and fresh. Tempura was so so, especially the eel with avocado was a bit weird combo and the shrimp was not fresh as it was a bit mushy. Sushi was good. The shell was the worst I think. The saus was very salty and heavy, which unfortunately ruined the scallop and shrimp. I could not enjoy the unique taste of the combination, but maybe you will find it otherwise. The beef cheek in red miso, was actually tasty. The meat was really soft. Good combination with the miso saus. The dessert was ok. Overal I did had a nice evening. Next time I will just order from the menu.

I’ve visited EN Japanese Kitchen & Sake Bar more than a dozen times, and every visit reminds me why this place has become one of my favorite spots in Amsterdam. The restaurant is small, cozy, and intimate exactly the kind of place where the experience feels personal and crafted with care. The menu is a treasure for anyone who appreciates real Japanese flavors. Their sushi and sashimi selection is exceptional, especially the tamagoyaki, maguro, chutoro, toro, and my personal weakness otoro. Each piece is consistently fresh, clean in flavor, and beautifully presented. One of the most unique items here is their seafood miso soup served in a teapot. It sounds simple, but the presentation and aroma make it memorable; it’s one of those small touches that shows how much attention this restaurant gives to detail. But the dish that keeps pulling me back every single time is the Teppan grilled bluefin tuna toro steak. It’s honestly a showstopper. The richness and melt-in-your-mouth texture make you question whether you’re eating a premium cut of fish or a piece of A5 wagyu. It’s that good—good enough to build an entire restaurant concept around it. EN Japanese Kitchen & Sake Bar continues to impress me with consistency, quality, and heart. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates true Japanese craftsmanship in a warm and intimate setting.

I barely ever leave reviews but this was the most disappointing dinner experience I ever had. My boyfriend really loves sushi and japanese food, so I wanted to go here for his birthday, thinking he would experience his best ever japanese dinner. Only issue is that I personally cant eat fish, so I called 2 weeks ahead to make a reservation and explain the situation, to make sure I could enjoy a fish free dinner. They were really nice and said this was all possible. When I arrived I immediately felt embarrassed because they didnt get my reservation, so we had to sit in a secluded area that was completely empty, and I felt stupid for being in a japanese restaurant and declining fish, which is exactly why I called ahead to explain. We both got the 6-course menu, my boyfriend had the normal one and I got vegetarian. I dont think they should even have a vegetarian menu… you could definitely notice it was just there to be able to cater to more clients, without actually putting some effort into the menu. The first course was the only one i enjoyed. The second course was a tiny watery soup that i got bored of after a few sips. The only thing they are actually very good at is fish, but still it wasnt the best my boyfriend ever had, eventhough it was the most expensive dinner both of us ever had. The tempura was by far the worst. The vegetables were watery, mushy, no flavour at all. My boyfriend, who had the normal menu, only got 1 piece of shrimp!!! the rest were a few piecies of watery vegetables for €20…. I paid €20 on top to get beef as a main course, and we were joking about how messed up it would be if i just got a tiny piece of mediocre steak, which ended up being the exact case. I did enjoy the dessert but it definitely did not taste homemade, or it mustve been made a while ago, since the cake was very dry. The staff seemed nice but not responsible at all. Their english is very poor, which caused some confusion. When I got the bill I wanted to be honest and told the waitress I thought the food wasnt worth this price at all. I spoke to her in a very soft and neutral manner because I didnt want to make her feel bad, but she just acted like she didnt understand me and I am sure she didnt pass anything on to the chefs or manager. After we left we were 3 hours further, €250 lighter, but still had an empty stomach. I enjoyed my €4 febo fries a lot better than this 6-course menu.

We had two 6-course menus, a standard one and a seasonal one, 1 drink and 1 water each. And the total bill came around 135e per person. The food was nice, especially the fish soup in the second course. But for this price, we expected much better service. We waited for more than 40 mins to get our food. After seeing the two other tables who arrived after us got their food, we asked about ours and received the question, "did you make your order?". It appeared that they completely missed our order. They also brought us the wrong dessert at the end and had to come back to swap it out. During the meal, we didn't feel like we were waited on. We didn't know who was responsible for our table either. We got served by a few people at different points in time. The atmosphere was okay-ish. But again, for this price range, I will only give it 3 stars. The tables were so close to each other we felt like we had no privacy at all. And the ambiance could feel a bit more cozy.

I found this great Japanese restaurant last month and decided to visit again. My second visit was on a weekend, and it was much busier and noisier than my first visit, so it felt like a different place. The first time I went on a weekday, the restaurant was calm and not too crowded, and I could really enjoy the meal. I recommend visiting on a weekday. The food tastes truly Japanese and is beautifully prepared. The prices are on the higher side, but they are fair for the quality of the food and service. They also have a great selection of sake, and the staff were knowledgeable and helped me choose one. I’ll definitely come back again on a weekday.

What a special restaurant. We really enjoyed our night here. Pure flavors, special dishes and Japanese authenticity. Only remark is that I had to walk over to the staff/bar twice(!) to order more wine because our glasses were empty for a while. We wanted to order more but didn’t get the attention.

We enjoyed 6-course with sake pairings. Everything so nice food and sake. It was a quiet day, so we were able to relax. Apparently, it's less crowded on soccer game days. I'll come back on a soccer game day.

It’s really with a full smile I sit here & right this review, also a full belly. I ended up spontaneously dining at En’ this evening - originally with plans to go with a friend who later was not able to make it. Yet, I still chose to go dine at En alone, which I was apprehensive to do, but those feelings all left when I stepped into the restaurant. I was greeted by a warm and friendly staff, and very lucky to have the waiter, whose name was Gijs, help me. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations. The food was incredibly delicious and the waiter checked on me often to make sure I had all I needed and was enjoying my meal. The whole experience was 10/10, I cannot wait to return!

The six course Amsterdam tasting menu rivaled Kyoto and Tokyo. Authentic but every couple of courses they put a twist on tradition. Just the right mix. One of my best Japanese meals outside of Japan. Recommend very highly.

Very good dinner. Loved all the courses and sake pairing was amazing. We stayed for the extra glass of sake after the dinner and asked them to surprise us - we were not disappointed. Dining room is spacious and intimate Service is polite and friendly Food is very good. I like this restaurant a lot and will add it to my roster of places I like to eat regularly. Price for 2 people 5 course menu with sake pairing and two extra glasses was €210

Very very good for Europe. Very very very expensive. If you have cash to burn and want to have one if the best Japanese meals you will find in the Netherlands go here. They know what they're doing.

Sup y'all... was taken here by my BFF while visiting yet again and guys ... this place is LEGIT for its service and food. I'll add a couple pics, but the service was top notch ... the friendliest and most professional service in all of Amsterdam my last three trips. It all starts with the warm ... not hot ... orange hand towel that you use to clean your hands and the rest went up from there. Just let the Chef do his thing and you won't be disappointed. We just let him order two large sashimi and roll platters and by far the best! Will def be back again!

What an incredible experience for the taste buds! My boyfriend and I came here to do the 5 course tasting menu. Each course was served with a complementary sake. To start off, we had this amazing blue/red sweet sake martini that set the mood just right! Each course that kept coming out continuously wowed me. My favorite was course #2, a fish-based broth that was served from a clay tea pot. You sipped on the broth with a tiny soup cup, and you can eat the fish and vegetables stewing in the clay pot. Next we had a sashimi plate, the tuna was my favorite, melted in my mouth. Fourth was a bison stew served on top of a fire. The dessert was beyond breath taking. Three tiny bites of utmost ecstasy. I highly recommend this restaurant. It is an unforgettable experience that I'll never forget.

We ate number of times at EN Japanese Kitchen & Sake Bar. Despite the fact that the sashimi and sushi portions are relatively small, we like the place because the fish quality is good, the sake list is quite extensive and the menu has many interesting choices. The last time we ate at the restaurant, we were seated at the room in the back. At some point the the table next to us ordered meat serve on charcoal grill. Once they were served with their order, immediately the room became full of smoke from the meat grill. We and the other table in this space had to leave because of the strong odor. All our clothes including the ones we gave them to hold for us need to be dried clean due to the strong smell, odor and oil from the charcoal meat cooking. We will not come back unless they will remove the dish from the menu or pay for our dry cleaning.

This place was very authentic and had a unique presentation for every dish. I'm not a fan of sushi so take this review with a grain of salt. The beef entree and chicken soup were amazing.

Had the 5 course menu. Was very nice. Especially with the unagi tempura and the wagyu sukiyaki.

Fashionable Japanese twenty-somethings, Amsterdam gourmands and Japanese businessmen already found their way to newcomer EN. No wonder: the owners of this Japanese restaurant and sake bar, chef Ken and host Ryuji, previously worked at Yamazato. This Michelin-starred restaurant is a household name within the Japanese community and local foodie scene. EN is less formal and less expensive than Yamazato. The monthly changing menu of this intimate place is dedicated to seasonal ingredients. These menus can be pretty wild: pan-fried crocodile with a teriyaki-foie gras-orange sauce, anyone? Go à la carte if you want to experience how EN excels in simplicity. The sashimi of ultra thin white fish slices melts in your mouth. Ever got excited about an egg? No? Have some truffle-omelette sushi. I rarely rave about veggies, but I make an exception for the lightly battered and fried eggplant, shiso leaves, oyster mushroom and prawns. A tempura made in heaven: tasty, crispy plus a low-fat crust. I bet Ryuji can name at least three sakes that will do this temptation justice.

This is a rare find in Amsterdam. A real and excellent Japanese restaurant with an interesting and very tasty menu. Service is excellent and its a nice touch that they have a number of high tables to sit at. We had one of their menu's and everything was very well prepared, timed and balanced. Enjoy
