Google
This is a little hole in the wall cafe. To be honest, from outside, it doesn't look like much. It really doesn't look special from the inside either, but this little cafe has it where it counts! I had an exceptionally tender, tenderloin. It took up over half of the plate (and it was a large plate). It was Served with lettuce, onion, tomato, mayo, and fresh ground horseradish. The fries were fresh and amazingly crisp. The pie is what every diner hopes for...... amazing. I recommend the pecan. I was extremely impressed with the staff, you could hear them laughing, singing, and taking with each other and their guests. Every single one of them truly seemed to enjoy what they were doing. Thank you Englewood Cafe, I will be back.

Google
This café provides consistently excellent service and high-quality food. I have always had a positive experience. The Spanish omelet, served with hash browns and a choice of toast or biscuit (with gravy available for an additional charge), is highly recommended.

Google
In a nutshell... We LOVE this place!!! The service is Great!!! We've adopted several of the wait staff!! And we're treated like family!!! That .makes for a great dining experience. It's nothing fancy, but it's definitely a diner. And a VERY GOOD diner indeed. Recommend frequent dining at this place. Service is excellent even when they're very busy. We go often, and they know us by name. The staff are fun to talk to and very attentive even with the hustle of serving large parties. Recommend this place for breakfast, lunch, and Dinner!!

Google
The food was great and the portions were good I try to watch how other people and the tenderloin is awesome. Double Cheeseburgers with onion rings were great. Open-faced or hot sandwiches are very good. The price is fair. Good people and a chill environment along with the pies......

Google
absolutely delicious food! My roommate and I came in and got a skillet, the Englewood Supreme, and some pancakes and everything was soooo yummy. Also, good strong coffee is always a plus. Our server was soo kind and attentive. We also got chili and pie for dinner tonight! Cute lil diner vibes with friendly staff and tasty food. Thank y'all for our yummy breakfast! 💓

Google
In town for a wedding and had breakfast at the Englewood Cafe. It was very busy with a lot of local folks. They Englewood was truly ready for all its patrons. We were seated and served quickly by the staff that was very friendly. The menu had a variety of options. The food was delicious.

Google
I was truly disappointed....the quality of the food is substandard in my opinion for the money. If you order pancakes and cracked eggs it will be amazing. My boyfriend enjoyed his breakfast, Mom not so much... My omelette was made with liquid eggs and non melted sliced cheese. The hashed browns were soggy and the toast was the best. I'm sure there is good about this place, since it's so popular...but I didn't feel it as a Google guide

Google
10/19/24 Had the slap plate. Was decent. They're very friendly staff. 10/27/23 Old establishment with old vibes and old people like me! Stopped in for breakfast and they had plenty of options. They're also open for lunch and dinner! Was good experience and likely go back.

Yelp
Service is good and served with a smile. Food is usually good - what you would expect for a diner. They do offer breakfast all the time and you can't go wrong with an omelet. It's not exact ally a place that has ambiance. It's just a typical old time diner that has had an update for quite awhile. Their burgers taste good and the giant tenderloin is the best tasting meat I've ever had, just lightly breaded. It's a place you can go and relax and have some "home cooked" style food.

Yelp
We have eaten breakfast here many times when visiting the Kansas City area, and everything is always homemade and fresh and absolutely delicious. Their pies are also something you don't want to miss! Has a hometown and great service and delicious food.

Yelp
An update to my earlier review, when I went there last time they were closed at 8am, I found out it was due to equipment issues, I have been back since that time and had a great breakfast, five star service and food.
google avatar

Fred Q.

Yelp
It's a diner and dive with great people and good comfort food. Leave room for pie or take it home for later.

Yelp
Definitely better than it looks from the outside. I knew as a long time resident it was well reviewed but I just never got around to trying. Now that I did I've been back several times! The foods great the service even better! It can get busy and even the best have a slip but this is solid Independence hospitality!

Yelp
Don't go lol. Too good don't wanna upset you. But this place aint for your kind. Great food.

William D.

Yelp
Love this place. This is like eating in a small town diner where they know how to make you feel "at home". Great service, good prices and a hefty portion of food.

Debra K.

Yelp
Service was good. There was a bug (not going to say what it was) crawling on our table. Give the food 3 out of 10
google avatar

Kari M.

Yelp
Excellent pancakes, fun family atmosphere with regular customers who servers banter back and forth with. I would be that "regular customer" if I lived here.

Paul M.

Yelp
All to gether I will neverever eat at the dirty, and unfriendly restaurant againFood was cold and not to

Yelp
Englewood Cafe is your typical, old school diner with food that delivers. Their tenderloin is bigger than your face and perfectly fried, their cheeseburgers are well seasoned and cooked to perfection, their curly fries are *chef's kiss* and they have a pie menu that is as plentiful as their pies are delicious. Highly recommend if you're in the mood for old school, amazing diner food.

Yelp
Tried this little cafe( at least it was probably little at one time). I had a giant tenderloin ( actual name, they also have a regular one. I ordered that along with a box. It would have fed a small family, but it was very tasty! The wait staff there is very quick and very nice. Many regulars came in and they knew what they normally ordered. Unfortunately, I rarely get to this side of town or I would go back often. It is a very quaint old fashion cafe feel to it. Very comfortable.

Yelp
Was a nice little place for breakfast or lunch . Service was spot on, waitstaff were on the job !! May return in the future, never know. Was pleasantly surprised by the whole thing. Didn't take any pics , will do next time.

Yelp
We live here blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah good restaurant

Yelp
What can I say about this place? Everything!! The staff is extremely friendly and attentive. If you like home cook country-style cooking, this is the place for you. Haven't had a terrible meal yet and lots of fun mixing with the crowd. Highly recommend

Joe Z.

Yelp
Always a great little diner with the best breakfast around at reasonable prices. A must stop if you are hungry for biscuits and gravy.

Heaven C.

Yelp
Love this place. I have a good experience every time I go in to eat. They know me by my name and face. They know my order normally right away. Overall a fantastic place to eat!

Yelp
I only gave 3 stars because the last time I was there, I was disappointed. I have previously been very satisfied in the past but I noticed changes in the kitchen have had negative effect. The last time I was there, I ordered an omelet and the vegetables in the omelet were raw. That is a rookie cook mistake. Additionally, American Cheese was used in the omelet, when I asked the waitress she informed me that unless I specify, they use American cheese. That shows me, little pride in your product, using the cheapest cheese product in the omelet.

Yelp
While waffle house won't seat you until 7am, folks down here will gladly assist you as soon as they open their doors. Portions are much larger than expected, so order accordingly! Food tasted great and my server refilled my drinks every few minutes. It's a bummer that I'm flying back home today, otherwise I'd stop again for another great meal.
google avatar

Don U.

Yelp
Have been going here for ten years. The breakfast are great and I don't think they have raised the prices too much over the ten years. Always feel like you just came home when you walk in.
google avatar

Kathy M.

Yelp
This place has the feel of a local diner and a regular spot for the neighborhood. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Everyone tried a burger and I'd have to say the consensus was that they were excellent. The portion size was good and everything tasted fresh. The French fries were extra, but everyone seemed to think they were worth it. Overall, we thought the prices were reasonable and the food was wonderful! We also thought that most of the dishes we were seeing on other tables looked good, which always makes you want to come back for more!

joey t.

Yelp
This place features a super relaxed environment, great breakfast food and great staff! Love coming here!

Tonya C.

Yelp
Quiet, charming and friendly and if your order isn't right they fix it with no hesitation.

Yelp
Grew up down the street and love this place! The chicken fried steak is huge and tasty! A breakfast diner that takes you back to your happy place!

Tracy S.

Yelp
Great neighborhood restaurant. We go here often and the food plus the service is amazing. Would recommend this to anyone.

Yelp
I went in around 7am, 9/12 I had been advise that they had good breakfast. However when I went in there I wasn't greeted. But the ppl behind us wh where. I stood there waiting and a young lady with short brown hair who was the waitress passed me and attended to EVERYONE else except for the brown ppl which was me and my daughter after 20mins of waiting on her to acknowledge me I looked at her in her face and she continued ignoring us.... I only stayed for her to try an correct the rudness but she was blatantly racist. My daughter was shocked about this behavior because she was just saying she never felt with racism. I WOULDNT RECOMMEND ANYONE TO COME HERE. it was even clean and the cook had no cloves on. What a waste

Yelp
Been going here for breakfast since I was a little kid. Breakfast is always good and fast. Service is always good. Can't go wrong with Biscuits and gravy. Wife loves the ultimate omelette.
google avatar

mark d.

Yelp
I love the food but the staff needs to wear masks. I would guess 90% of their clientele is over 60 and go there several times a week. It is IRRESPONSIBLE not to wear a mask.
google avatar

Mark W.

Yelp
Why in this morning because I was craving biscuits and gravy. Told the waitress it was my first visit she asked if I liked b&g and recommended a combo with a variety. I was focused on b&g so I went with a plate that had a split biscuit two sausage patties and hash browns for a very reasonable price filled me up and I had left overs. Staff was joking and talking with the customers and knew most by name. I'll definitely be going back.

Caleb C.

Yelp
Very simply satisfying but never the same considering many visits. The staff is always great but the food always Varys depending on the cook and the day
google avatar

Matthew S.

Yelp
This is a gem of a place! Must go for breakfast AND LUNCH/DINNER. They have the BEST tenderloin sandwich in KC! Staff is amazing, clean and respectful place. Like walking into your mothers house for dinner.

Yelp
Not completely sure why I didn't give a 5 Best and I do mean best burger in Independence it meets the big 3 criteria with me and any other burger lover 1. Big 2. Juicy 3. Tasty And if there is a 4th I would say it's not the overpriced loud Red Bird one over by costco This burger will blow you away is it anything fancy, no its just huge. ...bring your appetite because if not you may be asking for a box to take some home If you are looking for some swanky fancy place...This isn't it...If you want a quiet place to talk and get a good meal for a fair price this is it

Larry P.

Yelp
Good breakfast, reasonably priced. Friendly small town atmosphere. Good service. Good diner food.

Kayla T.

Yelp
I love going here with my husband! It's super cozy and the staff is always so friendly! I love coming here to have a nice casual breakfast
google avatar

Kelley F.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite cheap/great eats if visiting Independence. Breakfast and Lunch, everything is homemade, the pies are out of this world so it the Fried Chicken, Tenderloin Sandwich (huge). The staff is always friendly and efficient. This is a little hidden gem of a diner in a small strip mall right off downtown Englewood.
google avatar

Jason G.

Yelp
The Englewood Café is a typical diner, and it's fine for breakfast. Cheap food and no-frills is basically how I would describe this restaurant. Hadn't really heard of this place before, but my friend suggested it to us. I would say this place is mainly like a Waffle House that we have in the South. The fried hash was fine, but I asked for my extra burnt, and they weren't at all. Not to my liking. The service was very friendly, I definitely remember that aspect of Englewood Café more than the food.
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
I tried the Englewood Cafe. The servers were great, but the owner lady made sure even the customer's knew she shits roses. No flexability in the menu. For example can't be one pancake instead of toast??? Really??? Snotty and expensive at Englewood Cafe, so I'm very happy to have found Home Sweet Home. it tasks like home and a lot cheaper.
google avatar

Yelp
Ok, this place has arguably, one of the best tenderloin sandwiches in the greater Kansas City area. The tenderloin is one of those huge things but actually has tender meat inside the crispy outside. Love this with some horseradish and mayo, tomato and onion. I like the diner atmosphere too. The servers are friendly and efficient. My companion had meatloaf which was also delicious. I will have to come back.

Russel B.

Yelp
Great place to eat , big plates of food - great staff , fun bunch . What more could a person want , coffee is always ready , food is hot . And there s always pie!

Anthony S.

Yelp
I was here yesterday for dinner and had the chicken fried chicken dinner. The food was great and the waitress was friendly and very inventive. Can back tonight to try something else, pork tenderloin, we shall see.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
Found this place thanks to a security guard at the Truman library. It's your classic standard diner with excellent fare. I had the chicken and noodoes, my pops had the chicken fried steak and we shared a piece of apple crumb pie for desert. Everything was very delicious, matching the friendly atmospheric. A definite recommendation.

Yelp
I have lived in Independence all my life and frequent the Englewood Cafe. It has been through at least 3 owners since the original one retired. That being said, every owner has kept the down-home-country style fare and stayed true to the "Cafe" tradition. The breakfasts are fantastic and very well priced and the lunch and dinners likewise. In the Spring and Summer they have a SMOKED BRISKET SANDWICH (hand smoked by the owner) that would make ANY BBQ expert jealous. It is huge, soooo tasty and you just roll your eyes when you take that first bite. The pies are scrumptious and decadent and worth it. If you are too full...get a piece to go. The only reason I gave it 4 is because many times the brown gravy is instant and they are too good for that.

Yelp
Daaaaang!!! That's right 3 exclamation points. Big ass portions! And all of it awesome. Wifey had the ham and egg breakfast that came with Biscuits and gravy. The ham was so big it came on its big ol' plate. I had the pork tenderloin that being all good restaraunts had to be trimmed for the bun. That's respectable! So after consuming this meal wifey conned me into getting a piece of pie. I had the blackberry pie and she had the raisin pie. (Not mince meat) both were awesome. Now they don't make the pies here, they come from Golden Boy. Those in the know are aware of Golden Boy and we know that this Golden Boy makes awesome deserts. Ohhhhh yeahhh. We'll be back. Gotta work this meal off but we'll be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious greasiness! Great down home cooking! Belly flop into a fat plate of chicken fried chicken (that's as big as your face) with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans. Then have a warm slice of apple pie for dessert. The prices are great as well. Lunch or dinner and dessert will set you back about $9 per person. It's a no-frills kind of place, and I don't think the decor has changed since the place opened in 1952, but I don't mind at all! P.S. It only gets 4 stars because, although the waitresses are friendly, they're a little bit crazy.

Yelp
I've been here several times over the past couple of years, after stumbling on this gem quite by accident. This is definitely my kind of place! It's cozy, has very friendly wait staff and most importantly, very good food!! From what I understand, Englewood Cafe is a landmark in Independence. From the regulars you see, I can definitely understand why. You're practically greeted by name when you enter. Even if they don't know you, you're definitely made to feel special the moment you arrive. I've only dined for breakfast, but the cooks do an excellent job. The portions are plentiful, very tasty and very reasonable. You have your choice of hash browns or chunked potatoes, wonderful omelets, fluffy pancakes, crispy bacon ... Well, you get the idea! One of my favorites is the skillet, which has eggs, taters, your meat of choice, and cheese, if you so desire. It's quite delish! This I'd truly a great place to have a cozy, comfortable meal and you won't have to break the bank. So GO already!
google avatar

Layla M.

Yelp
Went for lunch with work people yesterday. Portions huge. Food delicious. Cheap eats! I had been for breakfast mom a few times. Nothing special. Bit it was amazing!
google avatar

Karen G.

Yelp
Ok let's start with the obvious. This place isn't fancy to look out from the outside, but the inside is clean and neat. Hubby got a tenderloin sandwich and it was HUGE. It was flavored well and not overcooked like can sometimes happen with tenderloins. I had a breakfast special, ham with eggs, hash brown and biscuits and gravy. First off, the slice of ham was big enough to have its own plate! More than enough for 2 meals, so yay for leftovers! The eggs, hash brown and biscuits and gravy were pretty standard, which means they were pretty good. They have Golden Boy pies so we decided on raisin and blackberry. Deeeeelicious! Will definitely have to make a return visit.

Trevor C.

Yelp
They are constantly being turned in to the health department. I saw cockroaches while eating there one morning and I was trying to be courteous by stomping on one and the waitress came by and she said "wow he thinks he sees a bug" I said no shit I know what I saw and they acted like it wasn't there. I only took one bite out of my food that day and left without paying because that is absolutely disgusting. I only wish I had pictures.

Sam R.

Yelp
If you're hungry for fresh, hot, honest American food, the Englewood is your culinary Heaven. Nothing to complain about. It's one one of those unpretentious cafes you'll find yourself using as a point of reference when you say, "We shoulda/coulda gone to the Englewood."
