15 Best Restaurants for Vegetarians in SF | Eater SF

"Enjoy Vegetarian Restaurant — which is run by a family of devout Buddhists — is also kosher, making it a hit with those of many faiths. Where this Chinese-influenced spot really shines is its soups, all of which are made with flavorful, hearty broths that put meat-based stock to shame. There’s a second location in the Sunset, as well." - Paolo Bicchieri

The 12 Best Vegetarian Restaurants In San Francisco

"With over 100 vegetarian dishes and the ability to drop in and find a seat anytime, this Chinatown spot is the answer for meat-free Chinese comfort food. You’ll find delicious stir-fried noodles, soups, dumplings, and rice dishes, all made with soy-based chicken, pork, and duck. We recommend starting with the mushroom-and-cabbage-stuffed spring rolls, the steamed dumplings, and the vegetable-heavy chow mein. If you're on the other side of town, there's a second location of Enjoy Vegetarian in the Sunset." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez

Google
I'll tell you what. In this day and age if you don't have my consent for something to consume at your restaurant and charge me, even if it's 1$, it's a strike. I didn't know the tea was 1$ and I didn't want it necessarily, but the waitress placed it and walked away and only after perusing the menu did I realize I was paying for it. Not cool. The food was alright. The options seem like a lot, but they are all deep fried tofu, gluten, or veggies. The Singapore style noodles would have made for good drunk food, but it wasn't packing any distinct flavors that made me light up. The golden basket, with a smorgasbord of fried stuff, looked good on arrival, but they all fell flat in taste. This place is definitely a comfort cuisine kinda place that you would crave late night after a few drinks, but I wouldn't come here for a gourmet experience.

Google
Good vegan, no onion no garlic, restaurant. We tried curry fried rice and bean curd pouch which was tasty and filling. The restaurant also caters to some dietary requirements. We were also served hot jasmine tea which we thought was complimentary since we didn't order but they charged us $2. The tea is good and refreshing.

Kam

Google
Amazing food! The decor and vibe of the place is pretty null but the food is what you’re there for. We ordered the Twice Cooked ‘Pork’ and the BBQ ‘Pork and ‘Ham’. Both were delicious. They do have tea they give you at the beginning and it’s automatically added a $1 per person to your bill, we found that out at the end. The food is pricey as well but the flavor and the portion size makes up for it. Would definitely be back.

Google
We had a great meal here. We arrived at about 7.10pm and they were due to close at 8pm. The food arrived quickly and we were all very happy with the quality.

Google
I have decided to not dine-in at this place again. The food is NOT the reason, but the service is. I might order to-go, but am never dining there. I had the House Special Chow Mein with BBQ Pork and Veggie Ham and the Eggplant & String Beans with black bean sauce. These are #71 and #42 on the menu respectively. Both were tasty. The Eggplant dish is super-hot and I had to cut open the eggplants to help them cool faster. ----------------------------- Reason 1). I paid in cash and was hoping to receive the change before paying them some tips. But the lady just kept the cash and said "thank you". I felt awkward to ask for the change. I wanted to give them some tips but not the full change. They should either 1). ask me if I'm offering the entire change amount as tips, or 2). offer the change amount back to me and wait for tips. ----------------------------- Reason 2). They offered tea instead of water for welcome drinks. I later saw that I was charged $1 for the tea. They should tell me before hand that the tea will cost me a dollar, and that I can shift to water if I don't want to pay for it. The tea itself was tasty, but I felt cheated of a dollar. ----------------------------- I don't think I will dine-in there ever again due to these experiences. The food itself is tasty but not their service.

Google
The food is excellent, though a bit overpriced. The service is ok. Made a special trip to see the museum recently and swung by here to grab a couple of dishes on our way out to be rudely waved out the door, they closed for lunch some 20 minutes early. Shame, we'd have been quick, my kid was really disappointed, we went elsewhere. The last visit was around $120 for 3 people.

Google
Absolutely excellent! Probably the best vegetarian food I’ve ever had in my life. Everything we had was amazing. Cannot wait to come back and try more. Service was good, however they receive 4 out of 5 for service since they were unwilling to help us seat all 8 of us together, even though it was not busy. Extra napkins would be nice.

Jack

Google
Honestly had an awesome time here grabbing dinner as a vegetarian. Actually, the entire menu is vegan except for a few options, which is insane. The flavors are amazing and each dish that’s usually made with meat are created with imitations that are genuinely better in taste and texture. I’m glad I stopped in for dinner and would love to come again if I’m ever in the area. If you’re a vegetarian or vegan who is looking for Chinese food, this is the place to go in SF!

Yelp
1. The menu has too many things to choose from so you will need time and you will be really pleased with all of it enough to gone back to try something you wanted to order, but didn't. 2. It's cosy inside and bustling with good smells and energy. 3. It's so nice to be able to order anything on the menu because there's NO meat. What Chinese restaurant does that? This one!! 4. Unlimited tea

Yelp
Unfortunately, our most recent experience dining here didn't live up to the expectations after seeing the positive reviews for this restaurant. The menu is extensive, offering a wide variety of dishes, but the overall flavor was lacking. The mock meat was well-cooked but had an unappetizing texture and failed to blend well with any of the dishes we ordered: orange chicken, sea-bass and eggplant, kp chicken. The vegetables appeared fresh, so I would recommend sticking to those if you decide to visit, but overall it's overpriced for the quality and flavor of the food. Ambiance is average. Relatively clean with ample seating inside. A bit loud because the restaurant is small you can easily overhear conversations on other tables. Service was another area where they fell short. The staff seemed rushed, even though the restaurant was nearly empty. They quickly took our order without much interaction, and the tea was placed on our table without asking if we wanted any, followed by an unexpected charge for it. This felt a bit too pushy and unnecessary. The biggest issue came when we received our check. After paying, the staff returned a check that had clearly been charged to another table, and our credit card had been taken but not returned. It was an honest mistake, I'm sure, but it left a bad impression, especially given that the restaurant wasn't busy. In summary, while the concept of a vegan Chinese restaurant with mock meat is appealing, the lack of flavor, rushed service, and small but significant oversights made the experience far from enjoyable. It's unlikely we will be returning unless there are improvements in both the food and the service.

Yelp
Spacious & Clean is the first impression I get when I walked in. I also confirmed this while using their clean restrooms. The menu is vast so it took us a while to choose. I was surprised that the popular items didn't strike a chord with me, but we did enjoy all but 2 items(Basil Soy Chicken & Spinach Pine Nut Fried Rice). Orders: #15 Veggie Duck $9.99- was dry, but flavorful. So this is the 1 dish I would omit next time. #38 Stir Fried Beans Soy Beef $16.99 the string beans were well stir-fried & flavorful. The texture of the vegan beef was ok, but not as enticing as the chicken. #48 Basil Chicken $17.99 a fried vegan chicken so crispy I wouldn't have even known it was meatless & the fragrant basil elevated the dish. An item I would re-order when I return. #87 Spinach Pine Nuts Fried Rice $18.99 despite being the most expensive dish without any vegan meat, I absolutely loved it. Because pine nuts can be expensive that is why this dish was $18.99 Hot Tea $1 per person A great find in the City for Vegan Food.

Yelp
I ordered takeout from Enjoy, and I loved it: It was just what I needed after a long drive. I would highly recommend the combination platter, which comes with a variety of different proteins mimicking Hong Kong barbecue meats. Get the large-- It's a good deal! Some of the other stuff on the menu seemed a bit overpriced, but this was excellent. Also really enjoyed the coconut dish, which had a lot of taro, pumpkin, and soy protein packed in. Again, very delicious (and packed really well, to avoid spilling during the travel to my hotel).

Yelp
Ordered delivery to a hotel and requested utensils and napkins, as my hotel room lacks these items. None were provided. Thank you for forcing me to eat your lukewarm food with my hands. Especially the rice. Have you ever eaten rice with your hands?

Liwen H.

Yelp
Located in China Town. The restaurant has good ambience, and seems to be popular as there are 4 parties on a Saturday lunch time. The food was tasty, okay service, but over charged rice.

Yelp
We did indeed enjoy this vegetarian restaurant. Got it to-go before my partner's and played a show at 41 Ross up the hill. We got the house fried rice (their pork and ham were so similar to actual meat that we had to pause and be like, this isn't meat, right?!), and the pumpkin green beans with tofu. Food was amazing. Service was brusque but not unkind. We asked for additional plates and utensils, and they were accommodating. If we were in the area again, would consider coming back here.

Yelp
You won't miss eating meat here. Their soy-based meatballs and chicken strips are very tasty. There were quite a few dishes I want to try, and they all look so delicious and look like real meat dishes. String beans with faux chicken strips, taro and pumpkin faux lamb balls, broccoli with faux spare ribs, combination fried rice, and assorted appetizer were my sampler dishes. I was not disappointed. They seem to have quite a few take out and uber eat or equivalent drivers came pick up take-out. Online or phone order is convenient for busy professionals. The restaurant has Traditional Chinese decor, and the in-room dining service was not as attentive as other type of restaurants. You will need to flag them down and tell what you need. Overall a delicious meal, but don't expect any attentive server for an experience.

Yelp
My husband and I eat a vegetarian diet whenever possible. On a recent visit to San Francisco we found Enjoy Vegetarian restaurant. Although we appreciated being able to have vegetarian entrees, both dishes were bland. On the menu they indicate they don't use garlic or onion, which may have been the reason for this.
google avatar

Elyse M.

Yelp
The is tasty. The staff was prompt, they weren't terribly friendly and also not jerks, mostly neutral. The vibe was decent. I'm going to complain though that they brought over tea we didn't order and charged us for it without asking us if we wanted it or telling us we'd be charged. Other than that I'd definitely recommend this place

Yelp
CALLING ALL VEGANS! Look no further than Enjoy Vegetarian restaurant! The food here is outstanding. The menu is inventive and everything is expertly prepared. This vegan restaurant does not use any MSG at all. Yet somehow everything is totally delicious at this classic "hole in the wall" chinatown dining spot. Stop poking around on Yelp looking for a vegan Chinese restaurant. Its this one that you want. Put down the phone you are already here. Highly recommended...

Yelp
Food 5/5 Service 5/5 Ambiance 4/5 VIBE: - no frills, straight to the point type of food establishment, the service provided is quick and efficient - menu has pictures in case you are not too familiar with the expansive Chinese food menu(next time I'll make sure to get a picture) FOOD: (all vegetarian, tons of vegan options) - general Taos Chicken (5/5), it tastes just like chicken! - vegetable chow mein (4/5) - Tom yum (5/5)

Yelp
Enjoy Vegetarian Restaurant is decent. I always appreciate chinese places that offer a lot of vegetarian and vegan options so this place was a must try when stopping by Chinatown. Unfortunately, like most shops in Chinatown it's business minded so the friendliness is lacking. The art of "small talk" is zero to none. The unexpected $1 per person for hot tea was not welcome. I didn't realize this was a sot down dim sum venue. hmmmm. We ordered two different types of fried rice: the curry fried rice (3/5) and the spinach and pine nut fried rice (5/5). Both were flavorful and tasty, the curry fried rice was well seasoned and had chunks of soy meat that tasted like a cross between duck and spam. The spinach and pine nut fried rice surprised me with how good it was!! I loved the crunch the pine nuts provided and it was surprisingly flavorful if a bit too salty. Chili oil wontons (4/5) were a hit and had a mushroom filling. The fried tofu (3/5) were nothing to write home about, just pretty decent fried tofu. And finally: we got the spicy tan tan noodles (2/5) -- it's okay. The spaghetti noodles were overcooked and was only saved by the pairing of chili oil and peanut sauce.

Yelp
Food is so delicious and you'd never know it's made in pure Buddhist way (no meat, no onions, no garlic). I go back frequently. Service is lovely Ambiance is homey.

Yelp
Great food. Good service. Quick. Reminds me of Hong Kong. Enjoyed it. Very clean and everything was very fresh.

Yelp
Hi Ya'll, it's Kat again here for you with a review on a new place I tried with a friend in the city--vegetarian approved This is an all vegetarian restaurant even if menu lists shrimp, beef, pork, chicken, etc., it is all meat substitutes. The waitress was alone and it wasn't busy when we arrived for lunch. She wasn't particularly friendly, smiling, or asked how we were doing. We did not like that she brought our table tea, which is normally to be expected from Chinese restaurants, then later on when we received the bill it showed that she charged us for the tea -.- it was very bland and basically just hot water with light tea leaves. Not worth it and wish she told us ahead that we will be charged as we didn't even request it. Ambiance was quaint, small Chinese restaurant--nothing special but clean enough. The food was great in my opinion being an omnivore. We ordered the spicy wonton boiled dumplings as an appetizer, beef chow fun, and braised tofu gluten mushroom green vegetable with "seitan" stir fry. "Seitan" is nothing I've ever heard of or eaten before but it was delicious and spongey. It tasted just like the braised tofu in the dish. Overall, I give it a and only went here as my friend is vegetarian and wanted to make her comfortable. I also enjoy vegetarian food. I'm not a huge meat eater but this place definitely did a good job about making vegan food delicious and filling.
google avatar

Sriteja C.

Yelp
Enjoy has a extensive menu for being all vegetarian/vegan - they've managed to replicate nearly all popular Chinese dishes as vegan/vegetarian. There were over 100 dishes on the menu, so Enjoy does not shy away from getting creative. The food was enjoyable and service was great. This is also on the cleaner end of restaurants in Chinatown, however prices are slightly higher than most Chinese restaurants in the area.
google avatar

Amy H.

Yelp
After reading the reviews, I was very excited to try this place, but honestly... it's just ok for vegan/vegetarian food. The sauces and gravies are VERY flavorful, but the "meat" just isn't as good as other places I've tried. The textures aren't quite what I'd hoped for. :( On the bright side, the food came out VERY fast, but I'm going to look for another vegetarian place to try in Chinatown.
google avatar

Nikhil M.

Yelp
A not-so-hidden gem in Chinatown for vegans and non-vegans alike. While the dishes don't taste like their meat counterparts, they taste amazing on their own and lack the chemicals in most processed fake meats. I definitely recommend this place as a must try for those who are nearby. We got the spicy wontons which were mildly spicy and the lamb curry.

Mark P.

Yelp
Really fast service and great food--a wonderful combination! Had the broccoli beef and flavor and texture were perfect. Highly recommended!

Pooja k.

Yelp
The food is ok. To be honest, they could help with some recommendations . I have had better Chinese vegetarian food. Service is quick.
google avatar

Malia Y.

Yelp
3 of us ate lunch here today. We LOVED what we ordered. 5 items: Hot tea, Thai tum yum soup, veggie duck appetizer, spinach Pine nuts fried rice, and pumpkins string bean tofu. Service was efficient and kind of brusk. Parking in nearby Chinatown lot (SFMTA - Portsmouth Square Plaza Garage) was easy and affordable. We will eat here again!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is absolutely a hidden gem. Vegan restaurant in China town. Female waitress was very stoic and not friendly. I came here with a party of 6 on a Saturday night. The food came out quick and was truly delicious. The service was fine but impersonal. The food was amazing. Gratuity was already included on our bill for a party of 6.

Brendan V.

Yelp
The restaurant was clean and the service was fast, but I don't have a lot more positives to add to this review. The service was also kind of rude. While the chow mein and fried tofu appetizer were above average, the dumpling soup and General Tso's fake chicken were mediocre at best. Three stars really feels like the right score for this place in my opinion.

Hakim D.

Yelp
Food is great BUT the woman at the front is Mad abrasive and short, it's not giving hospitality vibes whatsoever You would think being the only Vegan/ Vegetarian restaurant they would be nicer and more hospitable, not the case. Again great food horrible customer service
google avatar

Max S.

Yelp
too expensive. small portions. they give you tea in the beginning when you seat down and later they charge you for it.....dishes don't even come with rice you have to pay extra for a side of rice.. disappointed.
google avatar

Joey K.

Yelp
It basically reads like a regular Chinese food spot, but in the corner of the menu meat is crossed out. The Mongolian beef and broccoli was delicious and throwing my rice into the leftover sauce was a spicy mix. Immediately burnt my tongue on some broccoli, but I did just ignore the intense steam coming off. I liked the hot tea that I could pour myself. While I was a little rusty on the chopsticks, I enjoyed the challenge and accomplishment of finishing my food. Great service, Excellent food, will be back when I'm back.
google avatar

Mae J.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Chinatown. Despite its name, everything on the menu is 100% vegan. Excellent chefs. The entrées are deeply satisfying and flavorful without being heavy on oil and salt. I especially love the potstickers with the dough that's made from scratch. Comfortable seating and warm cozy ambience with dark wood. Service is no-nonsense and efficient.
google avatar

Meg G.

Yelp
So happy to find a fully vegetarian menu for a cuisine that's usually very inaccessible to vegetarians!! Great food, extensive menu and the service was good. Our favourite dish was hands down the spicy wontons!
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
I've only ordered take out from Enjoy Vegetarian. I can only recommend the General Tso's. It's the only thing I ever order but the last time I decided to also get veggie chicken chow mein & sweet & sour tofu. They weren't terrible but the chow mein had way too much black pepper (see photo & you will understand). The sauce of the sweet and sour tofu was very liquid, almost the consistency of soup.
google avatar

Brittany T.

Yelp
Food 4/5 Atmosphere 3/5 Cleanliness 4/5 Customer service 3/5 Speed 4/5 Price 4/5 Overall this restaurant was okay. Loved the wide selection of food on the menu. Other than that, nothing extremely special. I would definitely come back for the king pao "chicken" and "fragrant crispy chicken".
google avatar

Humera S.

Yelp
One of my fave vegetarian restaurants in sf! This was my first time eating at this location and had such a great experience. I came in on a Sunday night and found parking a few blocks away, plenty of street parking available and the restaurant wasn't busy. I loved how cozy the ambiance inside was and it was very clean. We ordered Veggie chicken chowmein(you can't go wrong with any of their chowmein dishes), Mongolian beef, drumsticks, and sea bass with eggplant, which all were 10/10. Note: they only serve soda for drinks and do not have a desert menu.

Shweta G.

Yelp
I am big fan of authentic Chinese food and frequently visit chinatown. I loved the food taste but was disappointed when i saw charge for hot tea. We didn't order that. It was served to us with menu. Just like any other restaurant in chinatown. When bill came it had charges for hot tea. Upon inquiry they said they will remove the charges but they didn't. The menu does not say changes for hot tea. It feels little weird.

Yelp
Cute little place with an all vegetarian menu that recreates many of your favorites. We had orange "chicken" with fried rice and dumplings. Very good!

Yelp
With so many vegan restaurants popping up in the City, I wanted to make a stopover to "Enjoy" and see how their options fare. The restaurant was clean and true to its cruelty-free mission. There were signs reminding you to not bring in any animal products and it felt like a very modern restaurant for those not wanting to dine in mom-and-pop shop settings. My partner and I tried ordering a few appetizers that we could take to-go since we weren't super hungry. They sadly said they were out of the Veggie Glutinous Rice which broke my heart, especially since we got there early afternoon. Instead, we went for their Chili Dumplings and the Veggie Duck, the later of which intrigued me the most. I didn't know quite what to expect when we opened the box and saw the duck. It was essentially bean curd roll with a tangy sauce on the side, so nothing about it really screamed "duck" as I remembered. I definitely say this will be a pass for me moving forward. However, our dumplings were pretty solid as you'd expect from any Chinese restaurant. Overall, a good spot to check out for vegan/vegetarian Chinese options but definitely stick with the main dishes.
google avatar

Ash J.

Yelp
A great place for purely vegetarian cuisine (many items are actually vegan, with a couple vegetarian ones). There's lots of adventurous dishes here that i would recommend - they do veggie versions of many popular meat/fish dishes. The "shark fin" soup is a great appetizer made of yam flour cake I believe. My favorite dish was the walnut "prawns" that's made with a creamy mayonnaise based sauce (so it's vegetarian not vegan). The "prawns" are soy base and delicious, and the crunchy walnuts complement the chewy texture of the prawns well. It's served with lettuce and tomato as well. Fast and friendly service with reasonable prices as well (mains are between $14-20).

Yelp
Honestly had an awesome time here grabbing dinner as a vegetarian. Actually, the entire menu is vegan except for a few options, which is insane. The male staff who took our order was incredibly kind and helpful. I'm glad I stopped in for dinner and would love to come again if I'm ever in the area. If you're a vegetarian or vegan who is looking for Chinese food, this is the place to go in SF!

Yelp
Tasty foods and good services, Prices are reasonable, place is clean and comfortable.
google avatar

Christophe F.

Yelp
Very good vegetarian food, everything on the menu is vegetarian. We didn't try anything too weird since this was our first time here: Singapore noodles, hot and sour soup, fried wantons, sesame balls and rice. Everyone liked it!
google avatar

Kevin F.

Yelp
Fragrant Crispy Chicken was really good. Ambiance is simple and got Chinatown vibe. Service was quick.
google avatar

Jessy M.

Yelp
A regular spot we go to often. It is on the side street of a trendy street so you may need to find it through Maps. I never had a complaint about the dishes and what gets my five stars is that it is very affordable! It may not be for everyone, but if good food and price matter then I recommend checking this place out.
google avatar

Terry G.

Yelp
Yummy food, service was on time, my order was even early. They even gave me some sesame balls filled with red bean. So yummy. Transitioning to being a vegetarian is much easier with delicious places like this. Ambiance inside is quite with the kitchen bustling in the back. This is the first restaurant where I've noticed the smell inside is not pungent compared to restaurants that serve meat. Great experience here, will definitely be back for more.
google avatar

Vivien S.

Yelp
Have only ordered deliveries from here - the pine nut and spinach rice is truly outstanding, so are all the tofu dishes and its sesame ball dessert. A deeply underrated place!

Nick O.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite vegetarian restaurants in San Francisco. I've eaten here many times over the years and never been disappointed. The menu includes many Chinese dishes you would not commonly see at vegetarian restaurants, such as sliced fatty pork. It's not just another vegetarian restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been reading about EV over on a couple forums online, and while on the hunt for dan dan noodles, stumbled upon it on Kearny. Over a couple visits, I tried the kung-pao 'chicken' with some brown rice, and the sweet and sour chicken. Both were excellent and satisfied my cravings for the chinese food I used to eat back when I was a college student and not vegetarian. Their dan dan noodles are *very different than the usual spicy schezuan ones, these ones feel like they've been dunked in peanut butter, so they're not for me, but I can see people liking it. Fried rice with some fake meat was quite good, but I did feel that the meat chunks were high on salt/sodium. I wouldn't eat it regularly. Also, the servers are amicable, helpful and happy to engage in conversation.
google avatar

Robert T.

Yelp
I haven't been here for a while and decided to eat lunch here today. The food was great. The Singapore Noodles and Spicy Won Ton were just perfect. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. I might come here more often.

Yelp
Great selection of vegan options! The food was flavorful and delicious. Would highly recommend for anyone staying the area

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! First thing to note is that it's located in Chinatown so parking is super difficult, but luckily there's a garage (California Parking on 555 Jackson St) across the street. Heads up that the parking spots are tiny... We didn't have to wait for a table on Tuesday night at 6:30 but we saw that the restaurant quickly filled up by 7! The restaurant itself is quite clean and furniture looked like it was still in good condition. The waitress did everything super quickly (laying out menus, taking our order, handing out take-out containers) so definitely appreciated that. 1. House special fried rice 5/5 Loved this item the most out of the ones we ordered! I think they added bits of "fake ham" to the fried rice. Each grain of rice was perfectly cooked and we both thought this dish was done great. 2. Eggplant with sea bass 4.5/5 The dish was very sauce-heavy but I really enjoyed the chunks of fake sea bass they added. The sea bass definitely tasted fishy and had a nice texture to it. The eggplant itself was done pretty well too, as it was super soft. 3. Green beans with chicken in black bean sauce 4/5 I initially came here because someone recommended this dish. It was good, but I didn't think it was as good as the other two! The green beans were super soft and charred quite nicely. The fake chicken itself was more on the crispy side. Not a bad dish but didn't think it was as good as the other two. The portion sizes for the dishes were decent and we felt that three dishes for two people was a good number. All the items we ordered were really tasty. They veered a little bit on the oily and salty side but I guess that's what made them taste good? Highlights for me were the fried rice and fake sea bass. The price was a bit on the higher side considering this was in Chinatown (per person it was about $25), but I'll still definitely be coming back to try more items.

Yelp
I love it Unexpectedly, there are such delicious vegetarian restaurants in San Francisco
