The Beautiful Temples and Gardens of Kyoto (Updated 2025)

"As one of Kodai-ji's sub-temples, Entoku-in deserves a separate mention for its two Zen gardens and beautiful traditional paintings, and because it was where the wife of daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi spent her final years. I appreciated the peacefulness and artistry of the grounds. Entoku-in is open daily from 10am–5:30pm and admission is 500 JPY." - Matthew Kepnes

Small but beautiful! Definitely worth the entry price if you take part in all the activities- sutra copying, designing Zen garden. All the activities have instructions written in Japanese and English so it's easy and without pressure.

One of the most beautiful temples in Kyoto, especially during the momiji season! The illuminations at night are truly amazing and the display of glass artworks really gives a special atmosphere to this place. Highly recommend!

I visited Entoku-In since I bought a bundle ticket for Kodaiji temple, EntokuIn and the museum. Therefore after visiting Kodaiji temple I decided to vost and relax my feet at Entokuin. There are small zen garden where you can sit and enjoy the view, it was very peaceful and calming.

One of my favorite temples in Kyoto. Unlike the main touristy ones, you can really take your time here and appreciate the peace and quiet. Just sitting next to the garden, writing the kanji scripts, and drawing the sand art was so meditative and relaxing. I felt so at peace the rest of the day. 10/10

Took a combined ticket to visit this and the neighboring kodai-ji temple. It’s pretty basic but well kept place. Only recommend if you have extra time to spend!

Quieter than other local temples. Done interesting activities (Make your own Zen Garden, script writing template sheets). Done interesting aspects to garden but small and perhaps not as attractive as others. Still worth a visit in my opinion.

Doesn't look like much on the outside, but this small and tranquil temple, built by a wife in tribute to her husband, is a good excursion for an hour or so. Admission is ¥550 but can be bought in a bundle with the Kodaji Temple and Sho Museum access. The temple building is beautiful, with orantely decorated rooms and artefacts on display. You remove your shoes and carry them through in a bag (provided) as you explore. Addionally, there's a Buddihist zen garden and a few ways to get interactive, such as collecting stamps, tracing a prayer for yourself, and making your own zen garden (the latter has a fee). It's a cute little surprise and a welcome retreat from the nearby crowds and has a lovely tea house where you can sit and chill for a short while.

Quaint temple in a busy location. Not many people here so you can really take the time to soak it all in. Two beautiful gardens to observe and a great place to rest. An underrated highlight in Kyoto
