This Unexpected City Might be Europe's Next Foodie Haven - AFAR

"A longtime Sea Road grocer run by Ernie Deacy, who has operated the shop for more than four decades. What began as a stall for basics has expanded into a source of specialty foods and supplies for Galway’s West End chefs: Deacy stocks an extensive spice and herb selection (about 135 varieties), prepares many items from scratch including soups and sauces, opens early to serve restaurant prep needs, and even introduces seasonal fruits such as greengage plums." - Gerry O’Shea

After a few days of pub food in Galway, we popped into Ernie’s Grocery for something healthier. Ernie was super friendly and helpful. It was the perfect spot to grab some lighter, tasty options. Definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a break from the usual! Ernie is a legend

Ernie’s an absolute legend. He offers basic produce (onions, garlic) and “dried” goods (pasta, oat milk) if you’re crunched and can’t do a proper shop. Great guy.

Friendly traditional shop which has won many awards over the years. Ernies is a much loved shop by the people of Gaway. He is a good humoured decent family man, trained as a chef which explaines the exceptionally high standard of the produce that he sells. He chooses with great care products from Europe and is always well stocked with organic fruit and veg and free range hen and duck eggs. I love his wines which are really well priced. Watch out for focaccia from Kai, pre order and pre pay to avoid disappointment.

A local Galway family business active for many decades, Ernie Deacy runs this grocery with care and attention to quality and customer service. In some ways, it's like stepping back in time; you could easily imagine this place in the 40s or 50s supplying the locals on The West with their daily or weekly supplies. But the range of product available now is definitely 2024 😀 A fine selection of pastas, sauces and antipasti? Yes. Local fruit and vegetables. Yes. Authentic Mexican corn tortillas? Si! You don't need Ernie to tell you the fresh figs, the bread, the olives, the coffee and the curry paste are excellent because Ernie and his team would not stock anything they wouldn't love themselves! Keep it up Ernie and co, you're a credit to the West!

The best part of stopping by Ernie’s, in addition to the convenience and great selection of fresh produce, is getting to chat with Ernie himself. He’s always in high spirits and has great tips and stories to share.

Just love the place!! Popping into Ernie's since the age of 12; sweets at school❤. Always great banter. They were the original Galway city shop for French, Italian and all continental foods; unusual fresh herbs, smoked salmon. Also, now French and Italian wines and water. His fresh fruits line the path outside - a different experience from a bygone time. You'll always call in when back in Galway....
