This spot is great. They have a lot of fresh gourmet level foods. They make smoothies and sandwiches to order. The shop is clean, fresh and well organized. Whether you're passing through or staying in town, it's worth a stop here.

Google
Excellent selection of healthy grocery items and house-made prepared foods. Honestly, I'm blown away by the options here. I never thought I'd find a place like this in a small town. You could stock up for dinner at home, or prepare for a camping trip with what you can find here. I had one of the best breakfast burritos of my life here, made with fresh ingredients and love. I don't think they take any shortcuts at the Mercantile! I'm going back for a sandwich ASAP! The staff here is super friendly, and there is a very sweet old dog snoozing in the corner. Really welcoming environment.

Google
Great breakfast, quick to order and great service! The local dog Tommie also added to the experience as he ran around the store. Would come again!

Happened to stop on our way to Capital Reef. What a lovely surprise! Great smoothies, bought a sandwich for the road. Look forward to stopping again when we are in the area.

Google
What a lovely place to visit and shop. My wife and I were here in May 2025. Pretty good selection and many health options. Breakfast looked pretty good but we made another choice for breakfast.

Google
Best place to stop in the area for great grocery store food. Deli inside offers a variety of options too. I have been stopping here each time I visit the area for years - it is my “go to” for fresh and healthy foods. Younger staff was very nice, older woman behind the coffee counter not as nice. She seem very busy and a bit curt. The place is clean, organized and has a good selection. There is an outdoor seating area to enjoy a fresh sandwich or muffin. They do have vegan options. Pack your patience as it can be busy. Located in a lovely old restored home.

Google
At first I thought great place! Very neat store, well organized and pretty, like my grandma's house. Great selection of natural groceries, fruit, veggies, snacks, souvenirs. Patio with tables and chairs. Friendly staff. Then I ordered a fresh (looking) apple turnover that had cardboard taste (not fresh and warmed by microwave) and a latte, but the store actually does not have a espresso machine. They make what they call "espresso" in little mocha pots on an electric hot plate. Felt betrayed, hence the lower rating.

Google
Lunch for after hike. Purchased chicken salad, potato salad, Pastrami & Swiss. Each was over the top fresh and delicious! After hike, returned for more chicken salad. Visiting from Pa. ... Thankful we stopped!

Yelp
Stopped in to get some lunch and were like "WHAT?" inside its like a NAPA, CA level foodie place. Home made sandwiches and sides like some of the best potato salad! I mean really really great stuff to grab and go or eat outside. The owner was so nice and helpful and was just loving her vibe, she so wanted everyone to enjoy the love they are putting into the store and food. I hope they keep it going what a JEM. There are a few places in this town that just rock and are amazing if they were in Salt Lake or Seattle let alone in the hiking wilds of Utah. We were here in the off season of mid Oct and still fresh everything.

Yelp
Breakfast burrito - kind of weird how they rolled/wrapped it, but it was solid. They just need a better hot sauce selection

Yelp
Wowza! Such a delightful health food market/café! Located in a beautiful historic restored building, it offers a coffee bar, grocery, prepared goods and even an artist's market! It exudes charm and provides an important resource (lots of gluten-free, vegan, low sugar, international cuisines and organic options) for the community. We bought farm-fresh local eggs, local fruit, some delicious dill potato salad, and vegan yogurt! The art market yielded a cute journal made from a vintage novel binding. My wife also bought some lovely gifts. I enjoyed a very decent cappuccino made with oat milk. The Mercantile has a lovely outdoor patio, well worth sitting on to soak in the panoramic canyon country views. For a small town like Escalante (population 800) to be able to support a delightful and sophisticated place like this says a lot about the residents and visitors. Escalante Mercantile was the most pleasant surprise of our weekend trip!

Yelp
We needed to stop and stretch our legs and get something light to eat. This was a wonderful surprise! Greeted by friendly people and their pup. They make fresh sandwiches, salads, dips, baked goods, smoothies and more! Organic groceries and self care. Outdoor and indoor seating. Didn't want to leave but we had to get back on the road.

Paula H.

Yelp
We stopped in here to get some delicious treats (brownies) and some food staples while we were staying in town. A super cute shop with a variety of groceries and a sandwich counter.

Diane W.

Yelp
OMG, after many days at Zion and Bryce, this was HEAVEN! I had my best meal here---they made me a fresh tuna sandwich. WOWZER! It was divine. Great products and nice folks.

Selena N.

Yelp
We stopped in to get some water and snacks for the day. I was happy to see things like hard boiled eggs and fresh veggies, but they had other yummy stuff as well. I bought the artichoke dip that which goes awesomely with potato chips! Ended up saving me at the end of the day actually. We got back so late from the slot Canyon that we didn't have time for dinner, so in part I ate that to tide me over. I appreciated this place a lot given where we were too.

Yelp
If there was ever an oasis of natural and gourmet food in the desert it would be this place. Great breakfast and lunch options for adventure picnics. I loved it!

Blythe S.

Yelp
It's mid-morning and I haven't had breakfast yet. Thinking about the breakfast bagel I got at Escalante Mercantile & Natural Grocer. This was such a charming stop in town and the perfect place for breakfast before heading back home (but would also be a great start to your day of exploring). The bagel was so soft and perfectly warmed. Sausage, egg, and cheese were piping hot and delicious. I also opted for a smoothie made with berries and spinach instead of my usual coffee and it was the best smoothie I'd had in a while. The outdoor seating area was a beauty while enjoying it all and inside there's a cute grocery. I regret not getting the THICK espresso brownie, but I planned to come back ;)

Sierra D.

Yelp
Natural and organic foods. Local produce and eggs. Beautifully rustic place, friendly owner, great variety. Small grocer with fresh coffee, pastries, and picnic lunches!!

Ronni T.

Yelp
The word "mercantile" implies there is merchandise. There is no merchandise like napkins, paper towels, etc. It's only food and beverages. Also the owner or the manager, not sure who it was, was on the phone the entire time and all that she did was bark orders at people. Not professional or friendly.

Nancy H.

Yelp
This is a great little store to buy natural and organic goods. The people are friendly and the coffee is very good. All the bake goods are made on site, and are as fresh as can be. The owners even suggested another store in town when they didn't carry an item we wanted. Just wow!

Jingwen Y.

Yelp
I am glad to see businesses are surviving. We stopped by here a couple of mornings to get breakfast and trail snacks before exploring. It is a really cute place with a lot of interesting find. Staffs are super friendly. I do feel bad for the gal work the mornings as the layout of the entrance is really awkward with the paying station as a stand alone island taking up most of the space and people are confused on where to order and pay. I think because of this there is a huge congestion in the morning. Expect to spend some time to get through the entire flow but they do have outdoor dining and expanding.

Kathleen J.

Yelp
We came to this lovely and majestic part of the US last week from Colorado. We stopped in for lunch. I was amazed at the fresh food and wide assortment at this market. It's an oasis in the dessert. The store is beautifully merchandised and our lunch was yum. As icing on the cake I was silly enough to leave my back pack behind. They kept it safe for me and returned it to me the very next day. I am so so grateful. Great store run by lovely honest people.

J M.

Yelp
A place so good I wish it was here where I live. Not a huge place, but they had what I was looking for (and a few things I didn't know I needed) - snacks, fresh local produce, ready-to-eat salads, sandos, baked goods. On a Utah roadtrip back in October, picked up awesome cheese and a fresh baked baguette for an al fresco picnic one day, and the next day grabbed some amazing homemade chili w/corn bread (don't let them forget ;-) Would still be visiting them every day if I could.

Sara Q.

Yelp
If you're in Escalante, I can't recommend this place enough. They've got amazing deli-style grab and go cold foods, smoothies, and pastries for breakfast and lunch. The grocery is so quaint with everything from frozen meats to produce to specialty items. We chatted up the owner quite a while and she was so nice! We loved our conversation with her, hearing about how she came to Escalante. The food was killer and the vibe was great. Go!

Lynnda P.

Yelp
Nothing like a non-updated business page to ruin a business. We drove a long way here based on the rave reviews. THIS PLACE IS NOT OPEN ON SUNDAYS!!!!! Marcie, you need to update your Yelp page. While the 2 of us were waiting for your Mercantile & Restaurant to open another couple came up for Sunday breakfast too.

Greg L.

Yelp
Very nice place. Great food and service. Excellent outside dining area. Quaint old building.

Helen H.

Yelp
The lunch place I was hoping to go to was closed, so we ended up here instead. There is premade food including sandwiches, salads, and baked goods. I had the dill potato salad. I liked that it wasn't too heavy on the mayonnaise. There is outdoor seating available.

Mike E.

Yelp
Our favorite stop on route 12! We had a wonderful experience enjoying great food, coffee, and conversation with Marcie the owner. We stopped by on a whim traveling from capitol reef to Bryce and are so glad we did! Great place for snacks, lunch, quality groceries and more!

Brian C.

Yelp
If you have 30-45 minutes to get an espresso, stop here. If you're lucky, you'll get your whole order.

Rochelle C.

Yelp
After a few days of camping in Grand Escalante, we wanted a sit down breakfast before we left this beautiful place. It was early and this was one of the only places open. Im so happy we stopped in! It's a fantastic local organic grocery store with so many locally sourced items. It was my dream store! The owner was there early and made us fresh breakfast bagels and really amazing coffee. It was all served in a beautifully put together platter which we took out to the patio that overlooked the mountains. It was a calm morning that I'll never forget. We grabbed some fresh local fruit to go and smiled the whole day!

Mister M.

Yelp
Grabbed an Iced coffee and a canned iced tea on a 97F day in early June 22 after a death march of a canyon (zebra and tunnel) Hung out inside too. Privately owned natural grocers / mini Whole Foods like shop with lots of charm and food you won't find in a 200 mile radius. Gets 5 stars from me.

Richard W.

Yelp
Delicious house made dips and sandwiches. Vegan friendly. Super nice staff and a beautiful building. Don't miss this oasis. It is a gem of south east Utah.

Michelle C.

Yelp
Cute place, however it is quite pricey, but I can deal with pricey. What I can't deal with is the attitude of the woman who owns and runs it. She is RUDE. Do not bother her with your questions..you've been warned.

Barbie S.

Yelp
Cool little shop. We bought chocolate and specialty iced teas and turmeric juices. The raspberry chocolate bar was INCREDIBLE!

Hannah A.

Yelp
I used to work here as recently as two weeks ago. DO NOT EAT HERE. The owner will use week old pastries and say they're "made fresh daily" and she also does this with the sandwiches, salads, all house made foods. She claims products are local and organic, but buys rotting veggies from the local general store that are Dole products and such. She just slaps an "organic" or "local" label on it and overcharges. She charges products 50% of her cost and overcharges on everything. She'll ring you up for a latte when you asked for black coffee just to get $2 out of you. The owner is also openly rude to not only her employees but customers. Very disgusting business and a wench of a store owner. There are other options in town besides this store

Cindy H.

Yelp
Such a cute little coffee shop! Loved all the pastries we got. We tried the brownies, scone, and blueberry muffin. Yum! Also picked up some sandwiches for our hike. delicious and kept us full for hours!

Billy B.

Yelp
Stopped here to get a snack. The scones were great. Wanted a sandwich. The example in the case was not a good sample , the sandwich was so much better! The lettuce and tomato was fresh not soggy. There was ample amount of meat. I was surprised because usually the sample is an overblown example. I was pleasantly impressed. There was fruit and organic veggies and the cutest puppy who loved the attention!! Definitely stop here if you need a break.

Susan V.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place because they have items you can't get with in hundreds of miles. They have a lot of good vegan and organic options for groceries but the owner is very rude and unprofessional. She walks around the store like it is her personal kitchen or house. She was barking orders at her employees from across the store as if we were all literally in her personal home out of the public eye. The employees Timidly walk around answering to her every demand in a skittish manner as if trying not upset her. I felt sorry for the girl working. It was quite a bizarre spectacle to watch. I almost walked out with out buying anything but I needed dinner. I won't be back.

Craig C.

Yelp
The best latte I think I've ever had. The best non-dairy shake I've ever shared. That this small market housed in a heritage brick house on the main road exists at all is a wonder. I can't think of a neighborhood store of this quality in any borough of my county of millions of citizens. The lovely woman who runs the place by the day will brighten your day, your week, maybe your year.

Casey-Erin H.

Yelp
Was so relieved to see the big sign for smoothies that I damn near flipped the Jeep pulling in. Two very nice gals welcomed us in, told us where to find things and encouraged us to wander around and find what we were after. I was pleasantly surprised by the wide selection & the sensible store layout, and after ultimately grabbing a few snacks and ordering a smoothie we were good to go. Super pleasant and unexpected natural food store in the middle of nowhere. Very good smoothie, reasonable prices and wide selection of natural food and goods. Don't know when I'll be back this way but very glad this is available right smack in the middle of such a spread out area. Highly recommend.

John K.

Yelp
A gem in wilderness High quality to go foods. Super fresh salad. Fresh delicious cookies. The food is not oily and not too salty. Lovingly made. Had to come twice for lunch n dinner. Expensive cappuccino but hey this was done individual percolator.

T S.

Yelp
What a cute store with uber friendly staff!! So much nicer than the grocery store in town. We stayed in Escalante for a week, and we went at least once per day for everything from coffee to ice cream. The local produce is so fresh, and the homemade baguettes made daily are amazing. I got them a couple times when they were still warm! We also want back multiple times for the homemade fig newtons as well as the banana walnut bread. The selection appears limited, but we were able to find so many different things for our stay. Can't wait to go back tomorrow!

M R.

Yelp
Simply amazing store with a natural touch and beautiful surroundings. The sandwiches and sides are made fresh to perfection. Quaint outdoor seating. Don't pass it up.

Iris H.

Yelp
I've been to this establishment before but am amazed at how RUDE the older cashier lady was. First off she mentioned there was no iced coffee when it's clearly on the menu. She then "womansplained" that iced coffee has espresso making it a lattes.... Um nooooo. What a shame cause it's a cute establishment.

M M.

Yelp
Went there for breakfast on 9/30/2020. First of all, the woman who runs the place wasn't wearing a mask while all the customers around her were. Also , she came off as being very prissy and rude . There were only two choices for breakfast; a "herbivore" or a " carnivore" bagel . One had eggs and meat and the other had eggs and cheese. Anyway, after eating the carnivore , I realized that the egg had red peppers in them . Now really, how does someone decide to put red peppers in eggs to sell to everyone? The kicker is that this place is one of the only restaurants in this town .

Caroline W.

Yelp
Nice outdoor seating, very welcoming and delicious healthy food. We grabbed the turkey cranberry sandwich on their homemade sourdough bread and a freshly made green salad with chicken, walnuts, tomato, carrots and a balsamic vinaigrette, it was all really good! Highly recommend for a quick and healthy bite to eat!

Michael M.

Yelp
Positive -- good smoothies and a good selection of healthy groceries. Negative -- not well staffed or well organized. A brief stop here for an item or two, can take a long time. We stopped by here four times during our stay in Escalante. The three times we stayed, it took 35 to 40 minutes to get our items and checkout. There was only one person working and it was a scramble for her as she made smoothies, waffles, or whatever and then would pop over to the register on occasion to ring people up. It's hard to justify waiting around for 35 minutes to buy some humus. We will likely be back in the future to give this place another try. If , however, there is any sort of line (even just one or two people), we've learned that it can be a long wait and to not stick around thinking it will only take a few minutes.

Kristi R.

Yelp
Great smoothies and great grocery selection. They pack an amazing selection in a small space.

Kate M.

Yelp
So stinking cute and useful! Most delicious selection of foods for camping and hiking. Also has a full coffee bar and deli with breakfast sandwiches. Most adorable house made into a mercantile!

Anna R.

Yelp
Excellent tropical smoothie! This health store is right next to the post office in Escalante, I believe you have to turn in to N 200 for parking, but I just pulled into the post office parking lot for a quick stop. They have a decent selection of snacks, skin care/beauty products, fruits/veggies, prepackaged snack packs, coffee menu, sandwiches and salads - oh, just a little bit of everything. The girl helping us was nice, but she was manning the store alone, saying it's usually not too busy. Only down side of this place is it's on the pricier side - the smoothie was $8.

Dwayne C.

Yelp
Great place for organic, clean foods. A real gem. Staff was friendly. The latte I ordered was okay. The sandwich and brownie was great. None of the staff wore masks or required customers wear masks, while down the street at Escalante Outfitters ALL staff and customers were wearing masks. That was a big deal for me. Showed me that the owners were not at all concerned about customer safety.

Cindy H.

Yelp
A great sandwich and excellent potato salad. We also really like the mocha brownie! A delightful lunch on their patio.

Steve A.

Yelp
Impressive array of groceries but not jumbled. Attractively staged and offering homemade sandwiches, salads, baked goods. Sandwiches are huge, the tabouleh (sp?) perfect. Grab a cookie, too.

Maine L.

Yelp
Yes, awesome health food store with fresh bread, homemade hummus, organic veggies and fruit, arugula! After 2 weeks of exploring national parks and not being able to find organic or even fresh groceries, I can't tell you how happy we were to find this place. Super friendly owner too. We had to stop by in both directions. Great picnic offerings too.

John A.

Yelp
Appearances are not what they seem! This little establishment is LEGIT! Staff is amazing and they have everything you need from natural groceries to awesome coffee! Definitely a must see little store when visiting or even driving through Escalante!

Jamie M.

Yelp
We had breakfast and lunch here while staying in Escalante. The breakfast bagel with egg, cheese and sausage was delicious and filled me up for a day of hiking. The apple strudel and cranberry scone were tasty! For lunch we had the merc made chicken salad sandwich and the black bean and corn salad (all found in the small fridge but the cash register) and they were perfect for a picnic along the Burr Trail.

Millie C.

Yelp
Very surprised to find such a high end store in such a small town. This kind of quality is only found in some large cities. A combination of chic, quality ,fresh and organic products for all tastes. Congratulations for such a great place and thank you for being on our way thru Utah.
