The annual "Team Fight On" vs. "team eight clap" golf game was held at Escena Golf Club this year, only a couple of miles from our administrative retreat location. Having never golfed at Escena (aside: and not having golfed since Thanksgiving), I really did not know what to expect. Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised at how every aspect of this course exceeded my expectations.
Arriving on a Wednesday morning around 9:15 for a 10:00 tee time, we were immediately greeted by staff at the entrance. Our carts were waiting for us to load, and included a small ice chest attached to the cart... filled with ice. Towels and score cards were already onboard for us.
The staff in the pro shop was ... friendly! So many times I've walked out of a pro shop feeling like I somehow inconvenienced the staff, based on the way they spoke to me-- not here! These folks were friendly and cordial.
At $34 for 18 holes, the price is very reasonable. With no real driving range, there is a practice net, and free range balls. No nickel and dime operation here.
Because it was a quiet morning, we were able to tee off a little early. The fairways in most spots are wide and forgiving for casual players like me, but offer enough challenge with sand traps and water hazards. There are few par fours, with mostly par 5s and 3s.
If you haven't played in Palm Springs, then you'll be surprised at all the roadrunners, rabbits, ground squirrels, and other critters running all over the place. The mountain backdrop behind the course makes every shot picturesque, even if your play isn't photo worthy.
As for our scores, we were down on the front 9, but Team Fight On obliterated team eight clap after the turn; thus and thus, we will affectionately call the course e'SCena moving forward. A great day of golf with great people.
