I had a very pleasant stay at Especen Hotel, and I'd be happy to stay here again if I return to Hanoi's Old Quarter for a future trip.
I was a bit concerned after seeing a few negative reviews. I did notice that the sheets had a few small stains on them, as some other reviewers mentioned, but that was the only thing I noticed from the negative reviews. They do have multiple buildings, so perhaps it helped that I chose to pay a little extra for a "Family Room, Balcony." Maybe some of their cheaper rooms have those issues from the negative reviews? They're also doing renovations though, so perhaps they're fixing or have already fixed the problems that others mentioned.
The room was quite modern and well maintained. The big window and the balcony were great additions. Note: make sure to leave your water heater turned on (the switch with the red light). I turned mine off by accident and took some cold showers until I realized my mistake. 😅
The staff was also incredibly responsive over WhatsApp. Happy to accommodate me when I needed to push back my arrival date. And when I had to leave a couple days early at the last minute, they were happy to put my room back on the market and refund me for any days that they might be able to rebook it for.
When I put up a Do Not Disturb sign on my door, they also took the initiative to leave fresh towels, toiletries, and bottled water in a bag on my doorknob.
It's not a 5-star luxury hotel, but as a well-priced option for a traveler seeking comfort and flexibility, I'd say it's excellent.
