Lovely inn, bright, clean, cheerful. The staff were thoughtful, engaged and so pleasant. Cass, who checked us in, remembered that we were visiting while touring colleges with our twins and asked how the visits were going. Breakfast was simple but with good and thoughtful selections. Also, really loved that our room had a split duct A/C; so quiet and kept the room very comfortable.

Great location for walking the town. Rooms have character, our was nice with lovely floors and a whirlpool bath. Comfy bed. The staff on site was nice, but the desk is closed late at night. Continental breakfast and Keurig was fine for our needs. Limited parking in lots and we were woken up pretty early by linen deliveries to the inn. The hotel blends into the historic nature of the town and is near restaurants and shopping.

We stayed here while on the way to Bangor ME. We found the Essex Street Inn a great place to stay for the night. It’s easy to get to and they have parking behind the building. The check in went well and the woman who helped us was very nice and helpful. The room was nice and quiet. The bed was very comfortable and we slept very well. The location of the Inn is terrific. Shopping, restaurants etc are all a short walk away. There’s also a nice park a few miles away if you want to have a nice walk or have a place for your children to play. We had a great experience here and will definitely stay here again if back in town.

This was my second stay at The Essex and I loved it. The room was very nice and the bed was very comfortable. Only problem with the bathroom was not enough surface space to put my personal items so I had to use the toilet seat lid for most of them. Love the convenience of being able to walk to everything. Parking was an issue - I am handicapped and someone used the only handicap space who did not have a handicap plate or placard - I told the front desk but they evidently were unable to reach the person who owned the car. Otherwise requests are handled immediately and with a pleasant attitude. I love staying here and plan to come back again.

Google
Room was clean, customer service was fantastic and the bed was comfortable. Unfortunately, sound travels effortlessly—heard someone else’s alarm for half an hour at 6am, followed by a truck idling outside my window like it had nowhere else to be. Probably not a repeat stay.

Just stayed at the Essex Street Inn for the first time this past weekend. What a great place to stay!! Super clean and neat. So much so I felt really comfortable with the cleanliness of everything. Upon arrival I was given a welcome bag with 2 bottles of water, some chocolate covered pretzel sticks, a pen, a postcard and a print out of local restaurants and their distance from the Inn. Lots of great info and a very nice touch. All staff were super nice, knowledgeable and helpful. The Inn is a 30 second walk from the main street so it's a really great location, also right near the main square. There is breakfast provided with a wide assortment of foods. Including breakfast sandwiches, cereal, fruit, bagels, juice, muffins etc etc. And for other meals there are a ton of great restos very close to the Inn. |The bed and pillows were very comfy. I see a lot of photos of those glass enclosed showers in the rooms, which I hate and to my surprise I had a regular shower with plenty of room and a shelf over the sink for my toiletries. Easily adjusted the heating/AC to my liking. |I was in one of the buildings flanking the main building. All very nice. Be aware there are no elevators, I have knee issues but was able to get to the 2nd floor no problem. ||My single problem with the Inn was no screens on the windows in my room. I like to sleep with windows open. I did anyway with no problem. ||I don't know how much there is to do in Newburyport, I came by train and didn't have a car to travel to anything outside of the immediate area. But on Friday night I had a wonderful walk throughout the downtown area, there were musicians playing in a couple of the parks, there's a cute square with musicians there too. Lots of nice shops. ||All in all a very nice getaway and the Essex Street Inn and staff made it even more so!!

Google
Great location and comfortable room. Nice touch that they had soup and cookies in the afternoon, in addition to breakfast in the morning. We were in the adjacent building, so had to walk cross parking lot to get to lobby where food was served, but just a minor inconvenience. Would stay again!

Google
This is our go to place to stay when visiting friends and family in the area. The location is great. The staff is always welcoming and accommodating. The rooms are a little dated but always very clean. The breakfast is not very good. Also prices high in summer and you have to book 2 nights.

Rachael G.

Yelp
Very quaint hotel just steps away from downtown, restaurants and shopping! Pros: Very impressed with breakfast! So many things to choose from: fresh muffins, kcup coffee, juices, cereal, yogurt, breakfast sandwhiches etc Bed was very comfortable, rooms really nice with mini fridge and kcup coffee machine. Only a couple cons here...no elevators so hope your luggage is light if you're on the 3rd floor. You almost have to be on the 3rd floor because the floors are squeeky (old building) and can be loud unless you're a heavy sleeper. The showers are so tiny so I don't know how larger people shower here. We stayed here for a wedding and overall had a great time!

Yelp
Typical Massachusetts inn. The town is lovely and the Inn is well located. Excellent customer service. However the rooms and bathrooms are both small. Our room barely had a closet and another room had no closet. That was odd. Breakfast was packaged cold things. Parking is tight but doable. We found a good spot and never left. Newburyport is a super place to hang!

Andrew B.

Yelp
What a delightful place to stay. Colleagues and myself were in Newburyport on business and our partners put us up at the Essex Street Inn. Everything was on point. Rooms were cool, clean and "sizably" cozy. Location was walkable to everything allowing us to knuckle down during the day and cut loose and relax at night. Staff was friendly, welcoming and helpful. Parking was safe, included and off street. I highly recommend checking them out by checking in to the Essex Street Inn in Newburyport, Mass

Yelp
My wife and I enjoyed our two night stay in mid-November. The location was in downtown Newburyport which allowed us easy access to shops and restaurants. The Inn was made up of beautiful, quaint, and charming old buildings. We stayed in the main building on the second floor. There is no elevator in the main building and I don't know about the other buildings. The room was spacious and everything worked to perfection except the heat. The room was uncomfortably warm for most of our stay even without having the gas fireplace on. The thermostat appeared not to work. The shower was tiny. We did not partake in the continental breakfast each morning and decided to hit a local breakfast spot for a full meal. The staff was friendly. There was ample parking for most guests but it is not guaranteed. The parking spots were very narrow even for small compact cars. We were lucky since we left our car there until we left. The rates were more than reasonable for this time of the year. Location, Location, Location, we wouldn't hesitate to come back and stay here again.

Yelp
We enjoyed a wonderful stay at the Essex Street Inn in Newburyport for a girls' weekend away. We were very comfortable in a one-bedroom suite with an additional sofabed, complete with a fully-equipped kitchen and a working fireplace (which we happily used)! The continental breakfast had a large variety of choices, helping us to start off our mornings being well fed. The staff was friendly and helpful upon check-in with a willing offer to help bring our suitcases up to our room. Kathy at the front desk was knowledgeable with suggestions for where to dine and go for entertainment, and she went the extra mile to accommodate our requests. We're looking forward to returning for another fun girls'weekend soon.

Yelp
I love the location of this hotel which is actually a series of beautiful redone historic homes in the center of town. It's a quick 5-10 minute walk to some wonderful restaurants, bars, and an eclectic mix of shops and mill malls. There is a lovely waterfront walk nearby on the Merrimack river. Every time I visit Plum island and Parker River Wildlife Refuge I stay here and I've only found that it gets better each time. They think of everything for creature comforts for their guests!! I truly appreciated the little hospitality bag of goodies -waters, brochure on Newburyport with lists of shops, restaurants, salons etc), pen and notepad. Plenty of towels, lotion, soap, toiletries in the room and the two robes were a great touch too!

Hannah S.

Yelp
This has to probably be my most favorite hotel of all time! Not only does it offer interesting historical value, but the staff were the friendliest I've ever encountered and the "room" (if you can call it that - it was more like a fancy condo lol) was immaculate, huge, well decorated, cozy...for lack of a better word, perfect! For starters - the staff - if you are looking for staff that make you feel at home and go above and beyond, they're here. Especially Mary - she was the evening/night staff when I checked in and I felt like I was staying with family bc she was so kind and warm! It was awesome - she made my day! The grounds have several buildings - I stayed in the blue one, built back in the late 1700s and called the Captain James Kettell House. For parking, they give you a paper to put on your dashboard and you can park either on the side, on the street out front or in the back. The spaces are somewhat limited but I didn't have any issues finding a spot and some spots are even covered. My king bed suite was two stories of living space with two whole bathrooms and a full kitchen - but the best part was the private rooftop balcony seating area just a few steps up from the bedroom! So the layout is that the kitchen, bathroom and living room are down, bedroom and bathroom up and then the rooftop balcony up one more (but only a few stairs for the balcony). The kitchen was stocked with anything you could possibly need, including a Keurig for coffee. One bathroom was right off the kitchen and had a shower. The other bathroom was upstairs joined with the bedroom and had a shower and a MASSIVE jetted tub! The bedroom was also huge and the bed was so comfortable! My only complaint was that the AC wasn't that great - but all I had to do was open the windows and it was perfectly cool enough. The living room was right off the kitchen and had a gas fireplace that was so easy to operate (just flip the switch) - and it generated quite a bit of heat almost immediately! Not to mention the great ambiance! They do provide a grab-and-go breakfast ...muffins, cereal, yogurts, oatmeal (heat in the microwave types), juices, water etc. So there was ample choice and a good start for the day! Oh and if you want ice, they have pre-bagged ice available upon request (Covid safety). I was only lucky enough to stay one night unfortunately...I can't wait to come back and spend more time staying here and exploring the quaint little town!

Yelp
Great girls night at the Essex Street Inn! The suite was beautiful and spotless!! Cathy and Al took fabulous care of our group. The breakfast was plentiful and appetizing, something for every one. Will absolutely be returning to this spot in beautiful Newburyport.

Sarah C.

Yelp
Our suite was bright, beautiful, and outfitted with comfortable furniture. It even had a working fireplace! Kathy and all the staff were so friendly and helpful. Best of all, the Inn is just steps away from downtown Newburyport shops and restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely stay there again!

Kristina I.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here for one night. The staff was very kind to us, but our overall stay was average. We were in room 106 which is at the front of the hotel facing the street and next to the front door. The room was so noisy and so bright even in the middle of the night. We closed all of the shutters/blinds, but still the light from the street and the light from the hotel's sign created an overly bright environment that was not conducive to a good nights sleep. Every time someone entered the front door or clomped up the stairs inside the hotel, we heard it. We were awoken many times throughout the night. The bed was very comfortable, so I was upset that I didn't get a good night's sleep. The room was clean and spacious -- a bit dated albeit. The hotel was close to all the of the shops and restaurants which was perfect for us and why we chose to stay at this location. Thankfully there was room for us in the parking lot (parking onsite is not guaranteed). The continental breakfast was average, but we were happy that there was coffee available 24 hours a day!

Yelp
This place was a gem. I stayed only one night but wish it was longer. Comfy room and comfy bed. Good tv select. Really nice.

Yelp
To whom it may concern, I recently booked a room bridal suite in particular in December.  I have been coming here for years for Valentine's day weekend.  When I arrived I was told my room was not the bridal suite,  but a smaller room. I was told that when you book online,  the system generates a room with the same amenities.  I have never had an issue booking online before.  And this room is not the same at all!!!   It is so much smaller,  there is no place to sit and eat. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED in the explanation.  This is unacceptable customer service.  The associate stated that there an issue with online booking and that if I wanted a specific room, I must call. Why bother having a web site with photos of a room you may or may not get.    I do not accept the explanation,  I understand that things happen.  But when I spend over 800 dollars,  I expect that I get the room I reserved.  Not to mention the room I got was at a lower rate than the bridal suite and yet I was charged the bridal suite rate, our nice romantic retreat was a bust. My wife recently had knee surgery and one reason I booked the bridal suite was that the bedroom was on the same floor as the entire room, but this so called suite had 2 floors. So my wife got to sleep on the couch while I slept in the bedroom upstairs. I mentioned to the staff that my wife had surgery and I was told sorry, but we are having trouble with the web site I will NEVER book another stay at  Essex st inn. And I will be sure to let my friends and family know about this horrible situation.  Thanks Essex st inn for a waste of 800 bucks and a wife who cried all night!!!! The hotel gave me a 50 dollar gift card, like it makes up for 800 dollar horrible weekend STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!! I would give a zero star, but the lowest is a 1 star

Yelp
Spent 1 night to celebrate our 25th anniversary. The inn, is in the perfect spot to walk and explore Newburyport. Kathy, the general manager, checked us in. She commented on our anniversary, and then gave us a gift certificate to the sea level. When we got to the room 320, we had a sign on the bed to. We had a front facing room. Very light and bright. The Inn was meticulously clean, tastefully appointed. Free parking in the back. Self-serve grab and go breakfast the next day. For the price and location, this can not be beat!

Stacy L.

Yelp
A very nice, clean, comfortable, quiet place to stay. There are plenty of restaurants and other shops in walking distance as well as the harbor. The only thing I didn't love was that the room was quite hot, even after opening the windows. I was on the 3rd floor so warmth is expected.

Joe D.

Yelp
essex house is great . we had a two bedroom suite with a fireplace . The staff were all great and attentive . Also included was a broad Continental breakfast and cookies in the evening . location is a half a block from dozens of bars , restaurants and shops .

A R.

Yelp
I stayed here just one night but could easily have stayed more and used Newburyport as a base to explore. I had a nice room in the second of three ( I believe) properties next to each other. My room was on the ground floor, in front, but no noise. The property itself is on a quiet, quaint street, just steps from the businesses and restaurants. I just felt at home there and the other guests were friendly also. . Parking was easy onsite. I did not find it too expensive ( especially given the exchange rate) and certainly worth the money. I asked about a microwave and fridge, they said the small fridges are coming, so as of now, you should probably request one. Bathroom was a reasonable size. The room was bright and roomy, especailly for one person, The bed was medium firm, which is fine for me, as I do not like soft beds. Newburyport itself is charming, and a breat place to stay if you want to explore other towns of cities. I imagine you can rent bikes somewhere in town, it is what I would have done if I had had more time.

Jennel N.

Yelp
It was a perfect stay. My boyfriend and I came into town last minute, the Essex was welcoming and informative, quiet and quaint. Perfect location just off the Main Street. We will stay again if ever back in Town.

Betsy B.

Yelp
First time in Newburyport and we love it!! Great harbor town! We stayed here at Essex Street Inn and were very pleased. Rooms are clean and modernized. Breakfast is free and nice selection. Location is PERFECT!!! Bathrooms are on the small side, but overall, you can't beat this place.

Laine G.

Yelp
The facility and service were excellent at this hotel. We stayed in an "elegant king" style room with a gas fireplace. We had been in an accident on the way down, and the fact that we could then rest in a lovely, peaceful room with a fireplace was wonderful. The king bed was really comfortable. This was clearly an ADA room and the bedroom and bathroom were extra large, which was great. Breakfast was right outside our door, which was convenient. The breakfast had lots of options. The place felt clean and safe. Best of all, we could walk out the front door and be right in the heart of Newburyport. We have been coming to Newburyport for about 22 years and have stayed in every lodging option. We will make this one our "go to" from now on.

Andrea T.

Yelp
Enjoyed my stay at this inn! No complaints here: clean rooms, comfy bed, great breakfast selection, friendly staff, and perfect location!

John P.

Yelp
I can't think of ANY other place you would want to stay at in Newburyport. So quiet, so accommodating, so nice. We booked a room on Booking.com, I called to confirm, and they said "the room you booked is small". They ended up giving us a 2 floor suite!! PLACE IS AWESOME.

Donna S.

Yelp
Stayed last night for New Year's Eve. Fantastic location in downtown Newburyport. Room was huge with a fireplace - very clean. Check in service was prompt and very courteous. Bed was king size and comfy. Big bathroom with another sink area outside which is very convenient. Would stay again in a heartbeat -

Christine S.

Yelp
We stayed a weekend at the Essex Street Inn for a friend's wedding in the area. The ease of using their website for making the reservation was terrific. The parking was difficult, but with the historic town of Newburyport, it's not unusual. We accepted our $15 parking permit (ticket) and were happy to be close by to load and unload luggage. The accommodations were on the second floor with a double bed, seating area and two windows letting in enough light and open for fresh air. The bathroom is small, but again for a historic building, it served it's purpose. The available breakfast items are a welcome treat to get you going in the morning and with lot of choices to walk about for later. The staff were friendly and helpful with where we were going and the best way to get there.

Katie E.

Yelp
We had a delightful one-night stay at Essex Street Inn in a king suite. Large room with fireplace, refrigerator, jacuzzi tub and bed, bathroom with shower stall and sink (little counter space for toiletries). Some dust on furniture, but otherwise very clean. Biggest draw was closeness to downtown attractions, as it is just steps from State Street. A few minor drawbacks: AC quite loud when it cycled on (even with ear plugs), bed was bouncy, so felt partner's movement through the night, and there were no accessible outlets near the bed to plug in electronics and a sleep mask. Those are minor things other guests should be aware of as they plan their travel but should not deter them to stay here. Biggest sell was price of room with a jacuzzi tub in a great location. There, it did not disappoint. (We did not sample the full continental breakfast, but the one muffin I tried was stale).

Justin K.

Yelp
My wife and I have stayed here multiple times and enjoyed ourselves every time. The first few times we stayed here we enjoyed the fact many of the rooms have a fireplace and jacuzzi. The rooms have always been very clean, and that plus the location have kept us coming back. The location is amazing, with a short walk to shops, restaurants, and the harbor. This past time we stayed in a townhouse suite with our two children (5 & 3) and they loved the room. There was a cute roof deck where we could hang out with our children and enjoy the beautiful weather this past Memorial Day weekend. I wouldn't consider this a B&B because the breakfast is more like a hotel continental breakfast than what you'd typically get at a B&B. But as long as you know that going in, you should enjoy your stay.

Lynn G.

Yelp
Great weekend with friends in Newburyport and the Essex Street Inn was perfectly located so we could walk to all we want to see and enjoy! The Inn, the rooms and it's staff made our weekend perfect! Highly recommend the Essex Street Inn.

Sgt. S.

Yelp
My wife and I have stayed at a number of B&B's over the years, and some of the experiences have been just unconscionably bad. We had, in fact, just about given up on the concept altogether when we decided to take advantage of a special package deal (upgrade to a suite, $75 gift certificate to local restaurant, all for $210) for a romantic night away from our wonderful toddler. Our room had a king size bed, jacuzzi tub in the room (stand-up shower in the bathroom), and a gas fireplace. We also ordered one of their special "spa" gift baskets for the room. Add it all up, and it was our best B&B experience in years. We absolutely had a ball, and between the clean comfortable room, friendly staff, and superb location half a block off the main drag, this was perfect. We'll be back. (We would've made it five stars if there was a real breakfast; it's just continental. There was also nothing like a library or sitting room, besides the breakfast area.)

Laura H.

Yelp
AVOID ROOMS 101 and 106 in this overpriced hotel. These rooms are one the first floor where the front door is located, where they serve breakfast, checkin guests, and where the stairs are. We could stand about 5 minutes of being in one of these rooms before requesting to be moved. The front desk lady even commented, "Yeah we should probably get a sound machine for that room." Umm what? How about you don't make a sitting area into a room? We were moved to a different annex, which was a nicer room. Our first room had no closet and a shower sized for kids. The new room had normal sized shower and closet. It's a real toss of a coin if you don't pay for a suite apparently. The hotel is super outdated and it didn't feel super clean. The pictures you see were taken years ago. Old carpeting and scratched furniture. This places needs some major updating. The one thing going for it is the great location, but parking can be a pain. 34 rooms and 24 parking spaces. Good luck! We only stayed here for a wedding and I would never come back. You can get a much nicer hotel in Boston for the same price. I cannot comment on breakfast as we chose to eat at local places.

Kevin A.

Yelp
Top notch service & accommodations from check in to stay to check out. Room was spacious, clean and included a fireplace that not only looked romantic but efficiently heated the room, a bonus for my heat-seeking wife. The breakfast included is not your standard, limited assortment but included cheese, HB eggs, various juices, etc. Loved it. Will be back!

Nicole D.

Yelp
Perfect place to stay for a weekend in Newburyport. Great location, within walking distance to downtown. The Inn had parking which was great. Super clean, friendly staff, nice rooms. We got upgraded to the suite which was awesome. Will definitely be staying here again!

A L.

Yelp
I love this Inn! Clean and private. Great location. The only thing I can say negative is that parking is a bear. Other than that everything was perfect.

Stan D.

Yelp
This isn't usually what I think of when I think of a bed and breakfast, but I enjoyed my stay. I loved the old building, (it was a stable at one time, but that burned down years ago), and I loved the history in this historic city. What we liked most about this place was the price and the location. They have the best price in the area, and they are centrally located within walking distance to just about anything you want to see in central Newburyport, including a number of excellent dining options, and lots of history. Our room was small, it didn't have a closet, and it was a little rough around the edges, but that's what I expect from a bed and breakfast. The bed was comfortable, the water got me clean, and there was no problem at all with outside noise, either from the street or from other guests. I don't know what happened with other people, but we found the service to be friendly, accommodating, and exceptional. No problems there at all. The Continental Breakfast was what you would expect, except I liked the added luxury of Keurig "individual" gourmet coffees instead of a pot of whatever. I did not, however, care for the apples at the breakfast. They were "mealy" instead of crisp. Also, when you use the coffee maker to get hot water for your instant oatmeal, don't used the hot water button. Instead, just set the brew at 4 oz without a coffee cartridge in it, and it will give plenty of good, hot water to make your oatmeal perfect. For me, I loved the value of this place, as well as its location, and the impeccable service. For those who did not receive the same, I am sorry. I recommend this place to anyone traveling in the area, and, too, will stay here again next time I am in town.

Patrick M.

Yelp
This is a quiet, accommodating, clean, comfortable place to stay. We stayed in one of the two floor suites which had a full kitchen, gas fire place, balcony and TWO full bathrooms, one on each floor. It's within walking distance from the downtown shops and restaurants. I could easily do a long term stay here.

Robert Z.

Yelp
This is the third time I've stayed because my company encourages us to stay here because it is close to the office. When I checked in yesterday, the girl who checked me in was SURLY at best. The first time I stayed here the shower stall was so small I couldn't even extend my elbows to wash my hair. The room I had last night did have a larger shower stall but no bath tub. For the record, I am not a big person. The rooms are very small. There isn't any kind of a desk or table to work at if you are a business traveler. There also isn't a gym. There is a VERY OLD tube TV in the room and I think it is a 13 inch TV. Good luck watching that across the room. There is no carpeting or curtains to absorb sound. The wood floors are beautiful but very noisy‼ They Include breakfast. It is pretty much a carbohydrate fest. Bagels, bread, muffins, frozen waffles, coffee, tea, juice and yogurt. The main reason we stay in a hotel is to sleep. Good luck with that. When I got to the Essex Inn, I was already sleep deprived and exhausted. After hours and hours of tossing and turning, I grabbed a pillow and blanket and from 4 AM to 6 AM I got two glorious hours of sleep in my rental car parked on Essex street. Yes, the front seat of a Ford Focus was more comfortable than the bed in my room‼ Why didn't I go to my car sooner When I checked out this morning. The manager did offer to refund my money. I decided to pay so I could in good conscience write this review. It is a lovely property. But the accommodations are not up to par and I hope the owners read this review and make the necessary upgrades to this otherwise beautiful property.

Yelp
Manager and assistant manager rude and ignorant not a good place to stay! On the phone with the assist manager hung up the phone on me 3 times and she very rude.

Mary B.

Yelp
Nice accommodations, helpful staff, and right in the heart of the area. Everything is easily walkable. I would highly recommend trying Anchor Stone Deck Pizza, which is right across the street.

Mary K.

Yelp
You can't beat the location. Steps away from restaurants and shops. We have stayed here several times and have loved every room we have stayed in. The manager Michelle is very helpful as well as all the other staff members. There are several different size rooms. Best place in Newburyport to stay hands down.

Nicole H.

Yelp
My fiancé and I stayed here for a weekend while visiting family that live in Newburyport and we loved it!! The Inn is so charming and the staff is friendly and informative! Our room was perfectly comfortable and very clean! It's a great location right in the middle of town with all the restaurants and shops! We would for sure only stay here again and again!

Peter S.

Yelp
THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE WE HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED. We notified the reservation desk that we would be arriving by boat and reserved the floating houseboat rental for $ 300 per night. After pulling our boat up to the dock next to the houseboat around 6pm we called the Inn to ask if we could get the key to our accommodations. A woman named Megan could not have been more rude and informed us that we had to take a cab to the Inn and get the key. This woman Megan was adamant about making things difficult and miserable for us. After we spent another hour retrieving the key then getting back to the houseboat we opened the barge to find the room temp at 100 degrees. The coffee maker, microwave, and toilet did not function properly. Also the view on the Web site shows the barge in a completely different , much nicer setting. When we tried to notify the Inn of our displeasure and we asked for some form of reduced tariff for our second night Megan said she would call the owner " JOHN " to see what would be possible. In response she called back to inform us that John said " it was too complicated " and that he decided not to rent to us for the second night. We were appalled at their actions. The owner and his staff left us stranded in Newburyport without any place to stay on a Saturday night with no place to stay ! In all of our years of travel we have never seen this kind of poor service. Avoid this place at all cost.

Tess S.

Yelp
Highly recommend Essex Street Inn! Cathy (Kathy?) at the front desk was very helpful with recommendations for local cuisine and what to see in the area. I am traveling by myself for the first time in the New England area and really appreciate Cathy's (Kathy's?) wonderful hospitality. My room was clean and quaint and perfect! Newburyport is an adorable town!

Bethel C.

Yelp
Loved our stay here! Clean, neat accommodations felt just like home, and only minutes from downtown Newburyport.

Best room ever! Jacuzzi and balcony. Staff was very nice and the hotel is conveniently located to everything.

Yelp
The Essex St Inn accommodated all of my out of town guests who attended my wedding / retirement ceremony. Their staff went above and beyond to ensure our every need was attended to! They made provisions for early check in where needed and even assisted some of our guests with luggage. I'm very impressed and will stay at the Essex St Inn again when visiting Newburyport!

Yelp
I stayed here for a couple nights with my fiancee. Overall, I was very happy with the room and the staff. It's located right in the middle of the city, so a great place to be if you plan on walking around. My biggest quibble is probably that our mattress was relatively firm. While it probably is fine for back sleepers or side sleepers, I found it much too firm for sleeping on my stomach, which is the only way I can sleep. The WiFi was quite good for hotel wifi. Netflix etc worked fine. The jacuzzi was larger than I would have expected (fit two comfortably), filled very quickly, and worked well. They have somewhat of a 'mom n pop' type of feel. The staff was very friendly. A sign at breakfast encouraged guests to take extra fruit to enjoy during the day, which I thought was a nice little gesture. They treat you like more than just faceless paying customers, which was nice.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here last weekend for my friend's wedding. The Inn is centrally located in a walk to everything location in downtown Newburyport. The Inn is made up of three period buildings located next to each other on Essex St. Our room was perfect, king size bed and fireplace. It was a perfect retreat! Staff was very nice and the rooms were immaculate. My friend's bridal suite was gorgeous. Off street parking behind the Inn could be a challege, especially in the summer, it is first come first serve. Luckily you can park on street on the weekends without much hassle. A very cosy, casual place to stay.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed at Essex Street Inn for about 5 weeks this winter. Because we both work in the hotel industry, we've stayed at our fair share of hotels and I have to say - this is one of our favorites. The rooms are very comfortable, the staff is always friendly and they have a very nice breakfast every morning. You cannot beat the location if you are staying in Newburyport. After 5 weeks, we felt so at home - we didn't want to leave!

Yelp
The Essex Street Inn is a lovely location on a quiet tree lined street right off of the mainstream of Newburyport. Just steps away from shopping and restaurants the Essex Street Inn offers all that you need for a fun vacation. The suite is just beautiful and having the fireplace and the living room meant extra space for guests. It is always nice to have a kitchen for a late night snack or morning coffee too. Privately owned and managed by owners who know the area, they were able to provide referrals for restaurants, sights to see and current events to take in. Highly recommended if you are staying in lovely Newburyport. I'm going back for a visit tomorrow, can't wait!

Yelp
This was the perfect spot for a Newburyport "mini-moon" this past November. The location of the Essex Street Inn was perfect for wandering to shops and great restaurants. The room was quite cozy and the staff was very friendly.

Yelp
The location is excellent. The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom tiny but sufficient. Nice towels, etc., small shower. The guy that checked us in was OK and helped with the tv when we had trouble. However, the ac unit made a noise that was the most annoying ever!! It never stopped. We slept with pillows covering our ear, the other ear against the other pillow. Unfortunately this couldn't be changed with a complaint to the staff. Everything is within walking distance so if you're a very heavy sleeper, this is OK. Perhaps it was just our room - #106. Avoid.
