The scale and atmosphere of this place always overwhelms me. The biggest stadium in South America. El Monumental is the perfect name for this vast and unforgettable structure. The electricity in the air on matchday is something far away from the norm. This is the best atmosphere I've ever experienced at a football match, and that is saying something.
This stadium has undergone a huge redevelopment completed in 2024, and I have been lucky enough to see the before and after. They got rid of the athletics track, bringing the specators closer to the action, and the capacity is now a massive 84,000.
I've never seen more police in one place in my life, but anytime I've been here I have not seen any trouble. In fact everybody I've encoutered has been super nice to me. The staff here has always been classy and willing to help a foreigner.
One time, there was a communication breakdown on me collecting my members card and I didn't have it for the next match which would normally result in being refused entry, even though I had a match ticket. They saw that I travelled a long way and wanted to accomodate me, so once they confirmed my identity and details, they escorted me to my stand past the numerous lines of security barriers on the outskirts of the stadium. This club is abosolutely first class!
Another time, a couple that were sitting beside me during a game, gave me a lift home to Palermo in their car after midnight, which was way out of their way. This club seems to attract nice people. I would really recommend this place to foreigners to sample a peak experience for South American football - it will definitely leave a long lasting impression on you!
