Estalagem Da Ponta Do Sol, a Design Boutique Hotel Ponta do Sol, Portugal

"Perched on a cliff facing the Atlantic Ocean, this design hotel is within a renovated traditional farmhouse. Set on Madeira’s South Coast, Ponta do Sol has a stunning infinity pool and hot tub with panoramic views. Floor-to-ceiling windows lead from the hotel guestrooms out onto balconies. Some rooms provide sea views, others overlook the garden. The total-white décor is complemented by flat-screen cable TVs. A game of tennis can be enjoyed on the court, located a 2-minute walk from the Estalagem Da Ponta Do Sol. Guests can also relax the spa & wellness centre where a sauna and massage therapies are provided. Boasting the most hours of sunshine in Madeira, Ponta Do Sol village is just minutes from the hotel and can be reached with free bikes." - My Boutique Hotel (en)

Estalagem da Ponta do Sol, Ponta do Sol, Madeira - Explore & Book

"This is not a designer hotel that erases the past in favour of the future; it works with it to create something far more interesting. It's centred on a graceful two-storey quinta, once a sugar cane estate irrigated by those famous levadas, which is perched on an ocean promotory above the pretty little village of Ponta do Sol. Whale-spotters used the clifftop as a lookout, lighting fireworks to alert neighbouring harbours to passing pods. A century on, the artfully restored quinta houses a chic bar, with a wraparound terrace and an intimate restaurant upstairs. Up on the clifftop, there's now a sun deck with a perfectly blue infinity pool, a wellness room with sauna and indoor chromotherapy pool, and an open-air bar which hosts 'Purple Friday' parties for sociable guests and digital nomads. It's that sort of place. Funky. The views are to die for, though it's worth looking inwards too: the marriage of old quinta with modernist annexes is inspired. A lift whisks you up the cliff and across open-sided bridges to the main courtyard, where sculpted loungers sit beneath swaying palms. Around it, the 54 bedrooms are simple, white and supremely comfortable. Ponta do Sol is one of the most charming - and sunniest - spots in Madeira. A long-standing favourite of i-escape reviewers and guests, this boutique hotel is a superb, stylish and surprisingly affordable base for exploring this mesmerising island. Highs The views: soaking in a cliffside hot tub as the sun sets over the Atlantic can’t be beat The uplifting modernist architecture combined with the prices attracts a more youthful crowd than other hotels on the island The excellent 'modern Madeiran' cuisine beats most local restaurants: you can dine in without feeling you are missing out On your doorstep are several levada walks and a swimmable beach It's great value, especially considering that transfers to airport and levadas are included Lows The hotel car park is small: parking is tricky but not impossible The accommodation looks a bit blocky from the outside, but the interiors are sleek and bright Lots of steps (though the cliffside lift takes most of the strain) Sea-facing balconies and pool terrace can sometimes be windy, but there's no shortage of sheltered spaces to chill out" - Michael Cullen

Estalagem Da Ponta do Sol (Madeira, Portugal) 11 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"This is Portugal, technically, although it's hardly the Portugal you are accustomed to — the island of Madeira is more a part of Africa than of Europe, and lies 400 miles off the western edge of Morocco. It's a volcanic island, which means lush vegetation, and the climate is tropical, which means plenty of elderly folks on holiday. Until now." - Tablet Hotels

This hotel setting is incredible however be prepared to walk for ages and take up to three lifts to get to your room!|Reception is after the lift from the car park entrance and is manned by good friendly professional staff. Breakfast is up one floor from there and was ok without being exceptional.|The second lift takes you further up the cliff(with lovely gardens) , across a walkway and onto the third lift to the room.|The room was a good size, functional,as was the bathroom. Both could do with a little tlc.|Two single beds, pushed together, made the double. They were firm but relatively comfortable.|Porto do Sol is very nice with a great array of good restaurants. We ate twice at the Caprice ,which was excellent.|Parking is in a small narrow car park and is not nearly enough for all the guest rooms. Roadside parking is also available but on a road frequented by large truck traffic, through the day.|Finally the views across the ravine and down to the sea are what makes this hotel stand out as do the sunsets which were amazing.

Absolutely amazing hotel, incredibly friendly and welcoming staff with great facilities set in an amazing location. Our aim was to relax and relax we did, with the lovely infinity pool and two full body massages for a reasonable price as a deal. Food was really great, especially breakfast. A pity to have not stayed longer.

Stunning setting set in the cliff side and fabulous architectural design let down by poor service and the place being generally rundown. The hotel could be fabulous but when we stayed it was a mediocre experience with surly service and a lack of attention to detail. Rooms are fine (great sea view for those that have them) but basic and not very clean. Bathrooms are disappointing with very basic product. Everything just felt fun down and unloved. Poor broken beds by the pool with old cushions, for example. Cheap furniture elsewhere. Service was poor. We booked three sea view rooms six months in advance only to be told on arrival that one room was not available due to ‘a mistake’. No apology. And generally lack of inclination to help. |Bright spot: an excellent breakfast.

I did not stay at the hotel, but I want to share some feedback. The hotel's music completely disrupts the atmosphere of the entire town, as the bass can be heard everywhere. I'm just a tourist and was only here briefly, but if I lived in the area, it would be incredibly annoying. I kindly ask the hotel to be more considerate of the surrounding community.

What an absolute gem of a hotel! Our biggest (pleasant) surprise was how the official photos just don’t do the hotel justice. Maybe it’s deliberate so you’re all the more bowled over when you actually arrive … but it’s probably the most amazing hotel I’ve stayed in! Architecturally, it’s so well designed and thought out - they’ve made the most of every last vantage point of the hotel’s cliff-top setting, putting balconies and viewpoints absolutely everywhere, and cleverly tucking stairs out of sight that lead you easily through the spaces. Even after a week we would still find ourselves on an unfamiliar set of stairs saying ‘Oh that’s where this comes out’! The gardens were a tropical paradise and were tended to daily by the staff, and actually took a good while to walk around, given how many terraces they were split across. Although the front side of the hotel (facing the village) could be a little loud with road / traffic / general urban noises, once you were up in the gardens between the two accommodation blocks or around the pool, you felt a world away from everything and you could only hear the gentle lapping of the water from the swimming pool. The pool / spa complex was great, and again, every pool had amazing views, especially the secluded sunken jacuzzi with a direct view of the sunset and the beach below! Our room was surprisingly large and tall (again, compared to the photos I’d seen) and had plenty of space for us to spread out all our holiday clutter without the room feeling full. The room had everything we needed, had a lovely balcony view down into the town / the beach, good air conditioning (slightly noisy but not enough to disturb our sleep) and a nice bright shower room. The breakfast buffet was very comprehensive and always tasted very fresh, and the views from the dining room were amazing. Eating dinner at the hotel was great, although the menu was quite small. The staff were all friendly, although some were more friendly than others, but I think that was more a language issue — everyone spoke English, but some spoke more confidently than others, and so those people tended to be more interactive / engaging / encouraging of making small talk. The reception staff were always confident English speakers. We have so many enduring memories of our time at this hotel — walking down through the beautiful gardens each morning to breakfast, watching the world go by from our window seat in the breakfast room, later in the day relaxing on the sun loungers in the corner of the garden under the shade of the trees listening to the wind in the trees and the birds singing whilst looking out over the sea, maybe later playing some billiards, before retiring to our room and watching the sunset. It really helped that we came out of school holiday season so we didn’t see a single child all week — it took us a while to realise why it was so peaceful! The two sweet dogs that were always to be found around the reception area were also a fond memory. On our first night, due to a delayed flight, we only arrived at the hotel at 11:45pm, and after checking in, one of the dogs went up in one of the lifts with us! The hotel was a great base to explore the south and west halves of the island and if we wanted to explore this area again / further, we wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to come back here.

I have just spent five delightful days at Estalagem da Ponta do Sol, and can highly recommend the hotel. My room was comfortable and spotlessly clean, with a dramatic view over the ocean from its clifftop perch. There is a lift from the hotel down to ground level.|Breakfast and dinner were very good, in a pleasant glass-walled restaurant with nice views over the village and ocean.|All the staff were welcoming, cheerful, efficient and eager to please.|The hotel provides a free shuttle to the start of various local levada walks, and free pick-up from the finish where necessary. I did three of these walks; they were delightful.|Free shuttles are also provided to Funchal, Ribeira Brava and Calheta on most days. There are also several buses to and from Funchal, and an Uber car cost me 23 Euros one way.|Less energetic, sun-worshipping guests are catered for with a very nice pool area. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, with plenty of comfortable seating around the gardens. |There is a gym, and various spa offerings. I did not try these.|There is a Friday-night 'musical' event of the techno/electronic type which may not appeal to everyone. I timed my stay to avoid this.|Ponta do Sol is a pretty little village, with a cobbly beach and a few restaurants, but it will not occupy too much of your time. The village is however a good base for levada walks and exploring the western part of Madeira. I divided my holiday between Ponta do Sol and a Funchal hotel, and found this a good arrangement.

We had a the loveliest week at the Estalagem: super friendly staff, beautiful setting and gorgeous food made for incredibly relaxing surroundings. The 'garden view' room had a side sea view and despite being a light sleeper, I slept really well for the first 6 nights (there was some road noise and the sound of the waves). I agree with other reviews that the interior looked a little worn in places (bathroom floor & furnishings, cracks in wooden floor) and some of the furniture appeared a little cheap (lamps, thinly disguised plastic chairs, balcony furniture). However, this didn't really bother us too much. ||When "Purple Friday" was announced we were initially curious despite the fact we don't particularly enjoy techno. But the reality of the event and how it was managed had more of an impact on our last day than we would have considered reasonable. Our last dinner was fairly noisy & chaotic with people getting lost on their way from reception to the pool area and the (otherwise lovely) kitchen struggling to cope with demand. Even the poor reception dog was visibly distraught and tried to hide at the kitchen door. A brief visit to the party tent was followed by a rather sleepless last night due to noise from the bar below late into the night and a sad goodbye the next morning to a pool area littered in fag ends. It was just such a disappointing end to an otherwise perfect stay which left us puzzled as to why the hotel hosts these curiously ill-placed events. I imagine that the degree of bother will largely depend on which rooms you're in - those facing the pool get a lot of the party action, those facing the bar get the later noise. Presumably the top building with SE facing rooms (4xx/5xx) is relatively unaffected.||I'm still not sure what my overall verdict is. It was a perfect holiday until the last day. Would we visit again? Probably not on a Friday night if Purple Fridays are still on.

We had a beautiful 8 day stay here. Good foods, great service, awesome location and a spacy clean room with ocean view. I would have given 5 stars when parking is not such a nightmare...very few places for a lot of cars on a very steep hill. Also the purple Friday party I could have done without.
