Eugène Delacroix Museum

This small museum to one of France's greatest painters spans a few rooms and a garden. They have some original paintings by Delacroix, complemented by works other artists made copying him. The preparatory sketches, painter's palettes, and cabinets give you a sense of his technique. They also have a small gift shop.

This museum is located in painter Eugène Delacroix's last apartment; he moved to this location on December 28, 1857, and remained until his death on August 13, 1863. It is both his home and studio. Rotating exhibits but the museum displays a lot of his work and even has one of his pallettes and some brushes. The garden in back is wonderful. Very quiet and restful. Chairs and benches are all around and it is a great spot for sitting and contemplating. There is a wonderful huge fig tree that has figs in season. Probably not there in Delacroix's time but nice to imagine it was. A great way to learn more about this important artist.

The building is really nice, and the garden is lovely, but be aware that the museum is very small—it's the smallest museum I know so far—and therefore there is only a very limited number of paintings; even the Wikipedia page about Delacroix features more artwork than you would find in this museum. Nine euros admission fee seem way exaggerated. The main thread across the artwork there is to show how Delacroix was copying other masters—and was himself an inspiration for others. While by itself, the idea is interesting, I don't think it is viable in this particular context—I would rather see it as a subject for a temporary exhibition instead. The museum should definitively refocus on the actual works of Delacroix, and acquire more of them.

A very worthwhile small museum in the vicinity of the St. Germain-des-Prés abbey church. The museum is basically comprised of Eugène Delacroix's apartment and separate studio building, exhibiting many of his works. The adjacent garden is a nice place to relax after the visit.

Beautiful and cozy (if a little warm in summer!). Maybe I missed it, but there wasn’t a pamphlet to help with some of the translations. However, there were more than enough English sections to keep up with. The garden is darling!

Wonderful museum with helpful friendly staff. Had a wheelchair for my 98 year old dad.

Horrible! Yes, it's his home and studio, but it does not look anything like what it did in his day. Most of his work that's there are mere sketches or quick drafts, and half of the paintings there are copies, not originals! I think there is only one painting there worth seeing, but it isn't worth the 9 euro entry fee to see it!

It’s a small museum sitting in a quiet corner. There are some sketches and a few paintings, including a sketch of the famous Liberty Leading People which was shown at Louvre. Other than that, not too much to see. The backyard garden is really nice though. I got free entry with the Museum Pass.

The best part was the garden. Totally quiet, just as the artist designed it. Such tranquility in the heart of Paris.

A great little museum in Paris. It's the former home of Eugène Delacroix and his studio. It's in a nice part of Paris. St Germain Des Pres area. I took the metro #4 from the Gare du Nord and walked to the Lourve Museum afterwards. About a 15 min pleasant walk that goes over the Seine River. The museum has a nice vibe that tells his story.

If you're an admirer or student of Delacroix's work, then this is definitely a 5-star attraction. If you're only mildly interested in his art or not intimately familiar with it, it's more of a 3-star museum. Hence, my rating in between these two. It's a small museum, more of a multi-room exhibit in his former apartment and studio. It's neat to know that this is where the artist worked and to see some artifacts, but I felt that more could have been done to really explain and educate visitors on what made him such an influential and important artist, at least to those not already "fans". There are some original drawings and paintings by him and quite a few by other artists to illustrate his influence. The rooms tended to have introductory comments in French and English but individual works were mostly only described in French. One can also spend time in the small garden which is very peaceful and pleasant--unless it's a scorching hot summer day as it was on the day we visited. All in all, I would not consider this a "must see" attraction in Paris if you have a short amount of time, but it is an easy walk from the Musee d'Orsay if you'd like to stop in after a visit there.

Five stars if you're in to impressionism and what came just before it. Four if you're not. Why still four stars? - because this is his home, studio, and garden. So it's a refreshing alternative to the standard museum of walls filled with art. It has a sampling of his works, not an extensive collection. It's in an interesting neighborhood to walk through, with plenty of shops and cafes. So if you're only doing Paris highlights, not here. If you have some time, definitely.

Ugh. The lower reviews are unfair. This is a fantastic museum and is even better appreciated if you know the works of Delacroix. To be in his apartment, studio and garden is a humbling experience and the museum also features original furniture and even his studio items such as his palette table and easels. Such an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience. The space is small and charming and gives you a peek at what life must have been like. Imagining yourself there, painting, in this darling French apartment. The works feature Delacroix's own as well those from his friends and contemporaries. And it's an excellent place to visit to see his drawings, as well. Don't give this museum a poor review if you don't know who you're talking about. For the rest of us who appreciate his work, this is a must-see.

Hm, after visiting this museum, I have to say that I'm not sure I like the work of Eugene Delacroix. The museum actually has a lot of other paintings that aren't by Delacroix, but I didn't particularly care for those either. This is a relatively petite museum, but the staff are very keen on making sure you visit the various rooms and Delacroix's studio in a particular order.
