The best way to think of Evergreen Lodge is as a hub for exploration of Tortuguero rather than a place to visit in its own right and from this perspective it is very good. Travelling to it by river is part of the whole is experience and the tours are very well organised. You are assigned a guide, who you stay with for each trip, and you get to know them well. The guides are knowledgeable and friendly and we saw a very good range of wildlife. The Lodge staff helpful and friendly and the lodges clean with the basics that you need. The meals are plentiful and canteen style: starters of fruit and salad, two or three main options including something cooked freshly (e.g. omelette) and a dessert with tea/coffee. You queue up and staff serve you your choice. You are assigned a table at the start of your stay and we found that helpful. We had a lunchtime departure and without us asking, we were given an early lunch. We knew before arrival that the lodges did not have glass windows and there was something almost magical about being absorbed into the sounds of the rainforest and the Howler monkeys (albeit at 4.30am.) What I was surprised and a little disappointed about was the closeness of our lodge to the others in the same area. This meant that you can clearly hear regular level conversation from people in other lodges and noise from breakfast being prepared in the restaurant. Also, although the lodges are slightly offset from each other, it is possible to see into your neighbouring lodge, so the curtains, which allowed some privacy were welcome when changing. The map of the grounds was slightly confusing and we would have appreciated clearer information about facilities, for example, on the last day we found 3 bar areas in the grounds, but were not clear if they were all open and the times.
