The Best Hotels in Iceland, From Rural Lodges to Reykjavik Boutiques

"Somewhat hidden behind a popular burger spot, Exeter is an inconspicuous property that blooms into a textbook example of how cozy Scandinavian interiors can be. Its location in the Old Harbor is within walking distance of the downtown shops, restaurants, and bars, but offers a quieter place to retreat to at night. The rooms are outfitted in the same earthy tones as the rest of the property, with leather accents and spacious beds. One standout: The Harbour Suite is situated within sight of Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and the view is well worth it. Two of Reykjavik’s most popular spaces share a roof with Exeter. Prepare for a line out the door every morning as locals and visitors head to Deig, a go-to for breakfast sandwiches and doughnuts. The same area is shared with Le Kock, a burger joint with a delicious take on french fries. Booking through the property’s website will get you the best deal, especially if you plan on staying multiple nights."

Hotel was in a very good location. We had a junior suite. Comfortable bed, clean and large walking shower. Fridge and tea/coffee facilities. House keeping free but on request only. Breakfast buffet was not bad but would have like to see more breads, pastries and less sweet cereals and yogurts. Room was quiet but got very warm and lighting was poor. Staff were friendly and helpful. WIFi was strong but crashed some days.

I absolutely love this hotel! The bed was very comfortable and the room was very spacious. The rooms were also very quiet and the staff were incredibly nice. The morning breakfast had a very wide range nutritious food which was very delectable. The sauna was great and the gym had a lot of equipment for usage. I would totally recommend going there. This has been my greatest hotel experience ever as everything was excellent. I will definitely come again!

This is a wonderful boutique hotel right at the Reykavik harbour, easy access to all the downtown sites and amenities. There is a fabulous buffet breakfast and you are attended by professional, friendly and courteous staff. The only thing that stops this from being a five star review is value for money. Our very small standard room was very small--hard to maneuver. And it was overlooked by a street with a fair number of pedestrians, which made it a bit awkward, and occasionally noisy. But I'd recommend, just request a second floor room.

Really a great place with friendly and helpful people at the front desk. Rooms were also fine, and the bed was comfortable. The only reason I gave the rooms a 4 instead of 5 stars was that they need to put some sort of soft closures on the doors. They really bang when they close and shake the whole floor when someone down the hall goes in or out. . It actually kept me from falling asleep and got me up earlier than I wanted to! The best bagels outside of NY are served downstairs!

For several years in a row my groups of friends and guests on our local gourmet tours have stayed in Exeter hotel. Again, again, every year the wonderful staff at Exeter makes the stay comfortable and the hotel is cool, rustic and stylish. Rooms are small but cozy and the lobby area is booming with local events and fun … not to mention one of the best bakery’s in the country being on the ground floor. Valur for money hits the spot too = highly recommended both for business and pleasure 😊

Rooms may be dusty -first floor is very warm/hot. But the other rooms are great, amazing service, and amenities. Loved the sauna, cold plunge shower, and heated green house

We stayed two nights at the Exeter upon first arriving in Reykjavik. Parking a few blocks away wasn't horrible, and cost about $20 a day. The hotel is modern and stylish. The rooms were a tad dark, but were comfortable and had everything we needed! The morning breakfast was excellent, and we loved starting our mornings in the sunny cafe. We found the area to be walkable, though a bit on the edge of the action. I think for the cost, The Exeter is a great value!

Rooms were OK, not sure if I like the concrete and somewhat brutalist vibe. It was kind of noisy the weekend we were staying there. The location is pretty good, it's near whale watching and some nice museums.
