16 Best Hotels in Iceland, From Rural Lodges to Reykjavik Boutiques | Condé Nast Traveler

"A somewhat hidden, cozy example of Scandinavian design in the Old Harbor, Exeter’s earthy-toned rooms with leather accents and spacious beds make for a quiet retreat within walking distance of downtown; the Harbour Suite offers a worthwhile view toward the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and the property shares a roof with popular local spots Deig (breakfast sandwiches and doughnuts) and Le Kock (burgers), with the best rates often available through the hotel website." - Erika Owen, James Taylor

We had a wonderful stay at the Exeter Hotel! Perfectly located in Reykjavik where you can explore the city and scenic attractions. We loved that there was a restaurant and bakery on the main floor with vegan options, which made meals so easy. During our stay, there was a charming Christmas market in the attached courtyard, such a festive touch! The person checking us in was very friendly and welcoming. She went above and beyond to look up a vegan restaurant for us that she heard was delicious. The hotel itself was comfortable and relaxing. We enjoyed the sauna and the small workout room, and even spent a cozy evening playing cards. Everything was perfectly located, making it an ideal way to spend our last night in Iceland. We would absolutely stay here again!

We had a great stay at the Exeter Hotel. It’s in the perfect location right on the harbour. The room was warm and comfortable and we both slept incredibly well because the room was completely silent. The receptionists were always very helpful and friendly, and the breakfast was delicious and plentiful! We also loved the bakery in the building which serves incredible donuts and bagels. It was the perfect base for our trip to Reykjavík.

I’ve now stayed At the Exeter Hotel twice. Front desk and housekeeping staff are unusually friendly. They smile and say hello every time I walk by. I’ve had great conversations with many of them, who are more than happy to make off the grid recommendations for tourists. The front desk is very responsive by email to accommodate specific needs. Early check-in was easy and available (for an extra fee, but it was exactly what I was told upfront). The breakfast buffet (included for the rate I selected) was really good! And the hotel is a short walk to lots of shops and attractions. I’d stay here again.

Great location with easy walking distance to sights and restaurants in Reykjavik. Bus stop #4 is a 5 minute walk for tours, and airport transportation. We had an Urban Deluxe room which was a good size and had a somewhat decent view of the harbor. Heated floor and towel rack was a great thing to have in the morning. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Sister in law left an important bag on the bus when we arrived. They called the BSI bus terminal right away and she got her bag back (kudo's to the bus driver for waiting for them to pick it up at the bus terminal). Restaurant, bar, and bakery were all excellent. Daily breakfast was very good, somewhat repetitive, but no complaints. We only ate dinner there once. Wife had the Ugly Tomato soup/sandwich, which was excellent. The rest all got the Fish Dish, which was good. The bakery was a big hit for us as we always grabbed something to bring on tours with us. Highly recommend Exeter Hotel.

This is hands down the best hotel! First off the location is great. They also offer parking but there is plenty of street parking. Bars and restaurants are walkable. The hotel is really clean. They offer a sauna, gym, a greenhouse, and lockers for storage. Staff is friendly and helpful. The restaurant in front of the hotel serves great food. The complimentary breakfast was perfect and offered a variety if selections. My bed was comfortable and I had no issues with the bathroom. Room also offered a lot of lightning. When I come back this, I will 100% be back here.

I and my husband stayed in Exeter Hotel Reykjavik from Aug 17 to 21, 2025. The hotel is located near the seaside and close to many tourist interested activities. The famous hotdog booth is just a few minutes away and the fish and chips sold by the restaurant nextdoor is so delicious! Our room was in the old building but it is not as old as we imagined. It has somewhat a simple style of living which is preferred in Northern Europe. The buffet breakfast has enough variety to choose, the place is comfortable, the atmosphere is warm and the staff is nice. Due to the strick of the Air Canadian flight attendants, we were stranded in Reykjavik. After buying our own tickets from other company, we had to leave the tour group and go on our own. The hotel reception staff was so helpful and nice, and told us to keep our luggage in their lockers before we left in the evening. As the road was temporarily closed for some events, we had to go to the other street to take the flybus. We showed our worry but the receptionist, Ana, showed us patiently the way of the temporary bus stop. She even sent our cellphone no. to the bus driver to make sure he can find us near the stop. We are so grateful to meet so many nice people in Iceland and this is one of the reasons that we'll be back again someday.

Had a Harbor view room. The French Doors opened and our bed faced the harbor which was lovely. Breakfast was included with our package which I purchased through Icelandair. An upgraded European room, but smaller than your American sized room. It was stocked with lovely amenities. A refrigerator, towel warmer, rain shower & hand held shower & plus all toiletries, etc..

We stayed a few nights at the Exeter and were so happy with it. Here are some highlights: the very close food options (the bakery Deig and the noodle shop Ramen Momo were EXCELLENT). The rooms were clean and stylish. The ability to leave luggage in lockers and hang out in the main space or walk around town were very convenient. The staff were really fantastic. Super knowledgeable and helpful. Alena helped us many times and we were so grateful for her assistance.
