On the Grid : Exmouth Market

"A great place to eat at any time of day. Caravan is great for breakfast, exciting eggs and arguably the best coffee around, Spinach and Agushi's Ghanaian food is a lunchtime food stall favourite, and there are plenty of restaurant options for the evening. From Moro’s incredible Moorish dishes and Blackfoot’s rare breed pig menu to the beautifully tiled Exmouth Arms and Paesan’s informal Italian, Exmouth Market is a true foodie hotspot." - Kin

Yelp
I've reviewed many of my favourites in Exmouth Market, but never the market itself. How silly of me. The market is the jewel of Clerkenwell. So many tasty stalls, lovely restaurants, pubs and kitschy shops filled with local characters and tourists mingling in Christmas-light-lit adorableness. It's a special place that isn't in too many guide books, and if you're heading to this area anyway be sure to pop by. Hell, make it the destination and no a pop by. It deserves it. I should add, beware the motorcycling phone robber. I have *twice* seen people crossing Rosebery get their phone snatched by a man on a motorcycle.

Yelp
I ate bannoffee pie here. It was better than sex. I had to have the box taken away from me as I had my little face licking the cream out of it after I had finished eating. Snuffle, snuffle... Seriously, where has this market been all my life? I've been to this area many times, I've eaten here many times, I've been drunk here many times but I had not been here while all the market stalls were advertising their tasty delights with amazing smells... Go and then walk along the street a bit until you see the church, walk through the gates and you'll find a perfect park to sit down in and enjoy your yummy food.

Yelp
You know when you find the next big thing? That apple of your eye? The product or area or cuisine or dance move (yeah, that's right... dance move, suckas) that is the latest and greatest love of your life? Perhaps you even maven it out so all of your friends literally can predict that the punchline of your current sentence will be the subject of your latest obsession... (not that I know from experience or anything). Well that's my current relationship with Exmouth Market. It's *that* great. It's a culmination of many things, really. It's great restaurants like Moro and Medcalf, Cottons and Santore, all of which offer fabulous al fresco experiences on the cobbles under the fairy lights. Gourmet delicatessen Brindisa, Sweet Boulangerie & Patisserie, Caravan, who by the way roasts their own coffee in the basement alongside an amazing menu and cocktail list... it's just good, good, good, on top of more good. It's also the funky shopping like Space EC1, Brill, Family Tree, on top of independent bookshops and record stores. And do I even need to mention the awesomeness that is Bagman and Robin? Exmouth is cute and accessible, it's central but off the beaten path... See what I mean? Until the next best thing, the punchline will always be Exmouth.

Yelp
Small, but mighty! That's Exmouth Market in a nutshell. It only spans one small block right at the corner of Farringdon and Roseberry and features just a handful of food stands, but each of them wafted mouthwatering scents toward us as we walked past. But really, I didn't even bother looking at any of the rest after I stumbled across the Freebird stand. It's worth noting that the Exmouth Arms has a number of very large picnic tables right outside, which makes for convenient eating, but you'll likely get told off for taking up space there if you've not made a purchase. On the other hand, they apparently have a surprisingly decent selection of local microbrews, including offerings from Camden Brewery and BrewDog. So, really, you're best off just having a pint with my lunch anyhow...

Yelp
Yes, brilliant. Delicious, cheap street food. We sampled the sausage sandwich and Medcalf's burger and had as sides Spinach & Agushi's eponymous dish, plus their plantains and rice. That was some GOOD meat. I think the sausage sandwich was £3.50 and the burger was £4 which I thought was pretty good value for huge hunks of delicious meat. I also enjoyed perusing the other stalls - burritos, Moro, 3 different Indian, salad and cakes! Loved it. Plus you can eat on Spa Fields if the weather is good. Really very happy after my trip here (even if getting to Farringdon from south west London is a total mission. It's so unfair how far this is from me).

Yelp
I went to Exmouth market for one thing only today. That was for the Moro stall which offers one dish per day for just a fiver. I was intrigued as I enjoyed the cookery book with its North african influences. I did not really want to spend alot but wanted to try their cooking. I arrived at the stall at 1220 noon and was not too impressed by the fact that the stall was not ready for trading. But I decided to return later after a short stroll around the area. By the time I returned, they were serving people. Todays dish was a free range Chicken served with lentil rice, salad and flatbread drizzled with a beetroot jus and sprinkled with coriander. I walked to nearby Spa Fields with my lunch. A cute little park with ample seating amongst various themed gardens. My meal from Moro, was delicious. The grilled chicken contrasted with a earthy beetroot sauce with a zing of coriander. The lentil rice was well seasoned and I was surprised not to detect any chilli notes either. I thought it was indeed worth five pounds to sample a dish from one of London's premier restaurants.

Yelp
Great market! Plenty of options and I sampled most to all of them and all were very good! Tip: go closer to 12:30 so they don't run out, some places will run low on food starting at around 1:30!

Yelp
Dear Exmouth Market, How I love thee. A quiet drink at the exmouth arms, an overpriced martini at dollar, tarts and tea at one of your many little cafes, a new piece of art at the family business, or a delicious bit of chorizo at moro. Perfection.

Yelp
For an American student who loves to eat, London is either weary on the stomach or the wallet. However, Exmouth Market is a surprising exception to this rule. I originally came at lunch time with some friends in search of an elusive sausage on ciabatta but found much more. To my initial disappointment, the sausage stand wasn't there. Instead, I settled on a vegan lunch box, composed of at least ten different salads that were packed to the brim of my to-go box. It was a medley of everything delicious: roasted butternut squash, dill potato salad, lentil salad, fresh hummus, tabouli, sweet potatoes and more. It was definitely some of the best al fresco food I've had, especially since I paid just £5. The rest of the market was filled with tantalizing stalls touting various ethnic fusion cuisines. I wish I could have tried everything!

Yelp
I've had lunch 3 times from the market and only 1 was bad. The Thai stall's pad thai noodles had no flavor and seemed to have been on the hob too long. The vegetarian Indian stall's saag chat was very fresh and flavorful. But the best stall I went to was the Moro's one - the chicken kebab was delicious. All the lunches were around £5.

Yelp
I too am a fan of Exmouth Market. The first time I came here was for a meal a a great restaurant on this pedestrianized street called The Ambassador. The vibe of the place is just great, especially during their weekly market which is set up from 11am to 6pm. There is stall after stall of food from all over, and the smells which fill the air are ridiculously salivating. Though during lunch times, it is absolutely packed, and you'll definitely find yourself cuing. Along the street are is also a range of restaurants, bars and cafes, as well as boutiques and furniture shops. The eclectic mix of people it attracts makes the place all the more inviting. Just walking through it is a treat.

Yelp
I adore Exmouth Market. One of my favourite things to do is to wander from Dalston into town via this beautiful little street. It is cobbled, and feels very special. Like a Cornish village street plonked in the middle of busy London. I want to live here by the way. There's just a wonderful feeling in the air here; the mix of restaurants, bars, boutiques and home stores means there's shops to suit all tastes. I recommend that you just pass through here, it really is a pleasure.

Yelp
I just love this quaint little but perfectly formed street. Pubs, fussball bars, awesome brunch places, pizza, burgers, great tapas, a hidden park behind and it all becomes magical under night lights as people stand on street and eat out. A little gem of a place. And it is also a proper market during the day with street food.

Yelp
I have reviewed enough places on Exmouth Market by now that I guess people might have guessed I am a fan. More like a street than a market in reality, but with a few stalls during the day, mainly selling food, Exmouth Market always has a nice buzz to it. In the evening, there are numerous bars and restaurants open serving food from around the globe. It rarely gets rowdy as it is not a city centre crowd, but there is definitely a vibe to the place. On a more boring note, the fact that the street is pedestrianised makes it feel like a bit of an oasis in the middle of quite a busy area.

Yelp
It's back... All is forgiven and your glorious fifth star is awarded. God bless your Italian sausage goodness...

Yelp
I first found Exmouth on a crazy wander on a double date. I came up Faringdon lane and there it was, a sudden bunch of really great looking restaurants. I felt like I had led everybody to the right place. You get a feeling of knowing London when your here. Small enough not to be a hub of tourists, and just enough fantastic restaurants to quell any food snob's yammerings. I know as I happen to be one. From pastry/coffee/carribean/moroccan/coctails/pub you can find what you're looking for here.

Yelp
The food along Exmouth Market needs to be seen to be believed, no matter what we say does not do it justice. The Food is FANTASTIC, from Sausages, Thai Food, Indian Food, Ghanian Food, Salt Beef, Vegan Food, Cakes, Turkish Food, Mexican Food, Spanish Food, Caribbean Food, Pie & Mash and thats just from the stalls!!!!. The Restaurants & Takeaways along this market is MIND BLOWING!!!!, On a summers day, take your food and sit with the other hundred or so people in Spafield Park!!.. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Yelp
I think I've died and gone to lunch heaven.....so many delicious food choices, all for 5 pounds?! I love the variety of the market: Mexican, veggie, Thai, pizza, Spanish, Lebanese, Ghananian...and the list goes on. Another great plus is that it's close to the park, so you can enjoy your meal outside and people watch. I'm actually heading to the market today for lunch and was so excited I had to Yelp about it! The fun continues...

Yelp
Exmouth Market well deserves its reputation for the best street food in London. Pretty much everything is under £5 and it all smells so gorgeous that it's hard to know what to choose! I recommend a Ghanaian curry from Spinach and Agushi and then a mooch around some of the great boutique-y shops

Yelp
This is the most amazing little hidden gem in London. Independent shops great food......and I can't wait to have my hair done tomorrow!
