British Columbia Is One of the Best Places to Backcountry Ski — Here Are the Top Mountains and Resorts

"I wandered into Extremely Canadian’s offices to arrange backcountry gear and guides; the longtime outfitter hires former Olympians and ski-movie stars and felt like the perfect place for first-timers to coordinate expensive equipment and clinics." - Tim Neville

My buddy and I had the opportunity to do the two day steeps clinic and it was an incredible experience. Our guide Gavin is almost certainly one of the best in the business. He has trained and skied with some of the best freeride and big mountain skiers in the world. The clinic absolutely pushed my limits and gave me not only the confidence to ski where I wouldn’t before but the technique to do so. We had some pretty poor visibility conditions (but great snow) and I would not have felt comfortable skiing that terrain without a guide. Gavin guided with a great mixture of teaching and just bombing the mountain. Extremely Canadian was a phenomenal group to ski with and I will 100% be doing the clinic again.

We had the opportunity to take part in the Introduction to Backcountry Guided Tour. Dave was absolutely fenomenal explaining the basics to Backcountry skiing and showing us the safety essentials. He was also an amazing photographer!! I cannot recommend Extremely Canadian enough, as their guides are extremely knowledgeable and experienced. Living in Whistler, these guys truly took my Whistler-Blackcomb experience to a whole new level. Thank you!

Was lucky to get the last spot for a one day step clinic. They split 10 of us into 3 groups based on level and I lucked out by being put into Gavin P’s group. First off, this guy must be the mayor of Whistler because he knew everyone in the lift lines ;-). More importantly, it was one of the best ski learning experiences I’ve had. I’m probably an advance skier, but could never handle steep + moguls. After the clinic, I’m not making the Olympic team, but I feel so much more comfortable on much harder terrain. Even if you’re an all out expert, just having the ExCan folks guide you around is worth the very reasonable price of admission. 1000% recommend and will hope Gavin is working there for another 25 years!

Our private lesson was with Jane E. We enjoyed her fun and helpful personality. She was confident and knowledgeable in her abilities as well as her knowledge of the mountains. Jane made our experience one of my favorite ski days ever. I skied out of my comfort zone and felt proud of myself for doing so. Every run felt fun and extraordinary. Jane would explain the plan, show us the best way to proceed and lift us up with reassurance when we felt little butterflies in our stomachs. She never put us in harms way but also took us to some of the most difficult runs I've ever conquered. Her knowledge and timing was impeccable. She listened for how the skis sounded on the slopes as we rode the chairs, collaborated with the rest of her team on what runs were warming up well, and even let her team know what runs she had done with us to give them advice on their own tours as well. Just amazing skill and calm demeanor. We laughed quite a bit too! On a side note and not to be overlooked: Claudia at the front desk was incredibly helpful. She was patient and friendly as we switched our 2day steeps class over to a 1 day private. It felt easy and she prioritized our experience when making all the changes. I find it more rare these days to find service of this caliber. Well done Claudia and Jane, for expertly making my birthday weekend one I will not soon forget. Now I just have to convince my three daughters to get on the slopes with Extremely Canadian when they are there! I will be taking every class/experience they have to offer. I can assure you, its well worth every dollar spent.

I did two “Two Days Steeps Clinics,” and I couldn’t be happier. Gavin and JM are true masters of the mountain. They always had the best attitude, focusing on improvement and correction at every moment. The mountain had challenging conditions, but they knew how to choose the best runs. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to perfect their skiing!

Last weekend, I participated in Extremely Canadian's 2-Day Steep Clinics, and it was an absolutely incredible experience. The program was exceptionally well organized, and it allowed me to achieve things that I could never have done on my own. I want to give my highest praise to Derryl and Stephen. Honestly, you won’t find guides more friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable than these two. Thanks to their expertise and encouragement, I was able to push my limits with confidence. Their patience and enthusiasm made every moment enjoyable, and they truly went above and beyond to ensure we had the best experience possible. I am deeply grateful to both of them—five stars are not enough to express my appreciation! If you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure with top-tier guidance, Extremely Canadian is the way to go.

I recently spent four days with the Extremely Canadian (ExCan) team for their two-day steeps clinic and two of their one-day backcountry tours. In a nutshell: this team is world class. The backcountry guides were exceptional, leading us through stunning terrain to fresh tracks all day long. When we weren't skiing waist-deep powder, they shared valuable insights on avalanche risk, terrain reading, backcountry gear, and safe travel, offering a solid introduction to critical skills for mountain adventurers. The two-day steeps clinic is hard to summarize... but whatever your limits are on the morning of day one, you probably won't even remember them by the end of day two. The coaches are friendly, highly knowledgeable and, most importantly, know just how to nudge you out of your comfort zone, building you up through progressively challenging terrain. Whistler Blackcomb is vast and can be overwhelming for newcomers, and even inbounds, the most difficult runs require local knowledge to navigate safely. The ExCan team makes it more approachable, and helps you get the most out of your time, whether you're new to these mountains or just looking to push your limits.

I had a Phenomenal day of skiing with Extremely Canadian on their one day Wednesday steep skiing clinic. Excellent exploration of challenging terrain catered to our abilities and pushing our limits. Fantastic instruction of how to safely enter chutes and bowls to open up more of the resort possibilities. The staff are amazing at what they do and offer a unique experience to inbound skiing in the resort. MP was a fantastic guide. I can't recommend it enough. Worth every penny.
