Great, authentic old-time western store. There is a great selection of Pendleton wool shirts and blankets. Huge selection of boots, very customer friendly

Google
A must-stop, must-shop store in Steamboat Springs. You'll see the OG advertising everywhere driving into Steamboat, and it does not disappoint. For all the amazing shopping in Steamboat, this is the most authentic and eclectic offering in town. You'll have tradition merchandise and very specific and local merch. Prices are reasonable and some of what they offer is hard to find in other places. Our family of 6 found that there was something for everyone. Staff is attentive and helpful. Highly recommend a stop, support this local business.

Have been on the hunt for a hat for well over a year now. Went in last week on a ski trip to look and most likely not buy a hat like I usually do. Have to say that Ava, one of the store’s hat makers, was absolutely amazing. I would not have walked out with a hat had it not been for her. She went above and beyond to be helpful and specifically helped me create the perfect hat I have been looking for. Ava, you are amazing and I will forever be grateful for your superb customer service.

This was a really fun store. It had things for the whole family. Our kids found unique toys and the hat, and especially, boot selection was huge! We also loved the taxidermied animals for sale.

Google
Iconic Western store with excellent selection and unbeatable customer service. Laurie is simply the best! A must see place in Steamboat Springs.

What an excellent little piece of history. I thought all the signs on the way to steamboat were cute, and I couldn't wait to stop in there. Of course, I got an awesome cowboy hat and a nice pair of cowboy jeans. Their selection was great and the people working were attentive polite and friendly. I can't wait to go back.

Google
The Original Western Apparel Store in Steamboat Springs. Heading into Steamboat Springs from US-40 you start seeing the store's yellow signs along the road about 40 miles out. Stopped in to check out the Western Apparel Shirts by Wranglers. Plenty of shirts to choose from with helpful staff to provide assistance. This store has been in business for over 100+ years. The scenery of the mountains from Steamboat Springs is beautiful.

It is by far the best place to get the finest in all western wear, huge selection, and nicest staff to educate and help you pick the perfect pair of boots! When in Colorado I NEVER miss a chance to go there! Love you guys!!!!!!

Yelp
Loved checking out FM Light & Sons after seeing all the signs on the way to Steamboat from Denver. The store had a great selection of cowboy necessities: boots, hats, bolo ties, and more! We all walked away with something; My husband a FM Lights shirt, my son a sheriff shirt for 1st birthday party which was western themed, and a Wrangler jacket for me that quickly became a staple in my wardrobe. It's a staple in Steamboat, and we had a lot of fun exploring the western apparel.

Jeffrey F.

Yelp
I bought my first Stetson with terrific sales help and good inventory. Eclectic and fun.

Ed S.

Yelp
Great store! Wide selection of all western apparel. Staff was very very helpful! I reccommend it to anyone, especiall beginers like me.

Scott G.

Yelp
There are a few T shirt and souvenir stores and a few really expensive clothing/boutique stores. FM Light has a lot of western gear from average to expensive. We found a cute fleece jacket for our granddaughter for about $25. It's dog friendly too. Check it out.

Yelp
My family including my husband, two young children and I stopped in from out of town to shop last week and I must say this is far from a family friendly environment. A woman with blond curly hair was wearing a completely see through very short dress with no undergarments and spaghetti straps barely holding the garment on her body, which also had a hole where her midriff was exposed. She was very flamboyant, and showing off in a very inappropriate manner, purposely showing off her body, and when she bent or moved, her very obvious cleavage and her form was visible, and my husband mentioned he could see "everything" through her dress. We left and I am very disappointed. They should spend less on BRIGHT signs littering the Colorado landscape and more on teaching their employees how to behave and dress in a manner that is family friendly.

Tara C.

Yelp
We were in Steamboat for a ski vacation- and my teenage daughter had been asking for cowboy boots for over a year. This was the perfect store with a huge selection. We had a well seasoned employee helping her decide on the perfect fit too. My other daughter found a great shawl/ scarf too.

Kelly G.

Yelp
This store has an amazing history! It has a large selection of boots, hats and clothing for all the family!!

Winnie W.

Yelp
The store is crowded and overfilled with merchandise cheaply made and overpriced, employees act strangely and several women were dressed inappropriately in spaghetti strap dresses, one woman was showing her body in a Very transparent dress with lack of coverage in the top area and she wandered the shop aimlessly -from several angles you could see her exposed body under her dress. I thought she was lost but then saw her at the register! I felt embarrassed for both women wearing cocktail dresses, one was less revealing but the other blonde was unprofessional and I did not want to be near her.

Alisa J.

Yelp
Really cool western store with authentic western wear. When you drive into steamboat you see signs for this place and it's definitely a shop to stop by at right on the Main Street of downtown. Besides western wear they have steamboat souvenirs as well. I would say the western wear is what you should be coming in for as the steamboat souvenirs aren't really unique. Cool shop you should check out. Lots of options and cool stuff in there.

Sam S.

Yelp
Everything I've been in this store I've only seen one woman doing here job. I think she said her name was Britt, she was on her hands and knees cleaning the floor. She looked exhausted but was doing what she needed to. Very polite and pretty. I have seen so many people that work there outside smoking or on the phone while she was working. I think the one that speaks very fast like she is on drugs is the manager. Boy she isn't smart at all and very disrespectful. I also overheard her talking about doing drugs to a Co worker. I hope The Britt girl becomes manager. This store looks so much better since she has been here. I come in a couple days looking for a hat. The Emma girl is rude and cuts me off when I speak. I have told this to all that I know. Thanks for hiring Britt

Coltrane S.

Yelp
Very friendly staff, great selection of western wear and souvenirs. Some stuff is a little on the pricey side but they had some great sale items as well. Definitely something for everyone here!

Jay Z.

Yelp
I just had to stop in FM while walking Steamboat to see what all the fuss was about. I can say that this is a legit western wear store. I was looking for a wool coat but did not see any. And yes when you drive to and from Steamboat the signs just are unique that are placed randomly along the way just hinting at a must see in Steamboat. I highly rec walking steamboat and taking a look around there is an abundance of unique cool places to shop at including FM Light.

Lauren B.

Yelp
FM Lights has been a steamboat staple for generations. If you are looking for a special place to buy a piece of steamboat history, look no further. I wanted to wear cowboy boots to my Steamboat wedding and found the perfect pair of embroidered boots. They were absolutely perfect. This store is also a great outing for kids. They have sheriff badges and $5 cowboy hats for kids to live out their cowboy dreams while they are in the west.

Ryan B.

Yelp
The most amazing retail store in Steamboat & the state of Colorado. Endurance, pure endurance comes to mind when I think of FM Light & Sons. . . In it for the long haul kind of value you just don't see companies hold on to as much these days. They really take care of their people and they are the best in the business when it comes to customer service and ensuring that quality is what people get when they go to FM Light & Sons. Amazing!

Sonja A.

Yelp
Outfitting the west since 1905 and outfitting my wardrobe since I was a kid, it is always a treat to stop into FM Light. I can always find something be it a hat, a shirt, jacket, toys or the best huckleberry chocolate bar. This years trip to Steamboat had me wanting to invest in a nice cowboy hat favorable to winter weather. I left with that and a gr eat pair of boots to go with. I was greeted as soon as I walked in and helped by Peter throughout my shopping venture. It was great getting recommendations about boot fit and what style is suitable for me. The selection isn't abundant but they keep it simple for a reason (because people like me have a hard time choosing just one). Couple of pointers: 1) Don't wear winter style boot socks or at least plan to bring a lightweight sock (better when trying in boots). 2) Ask for a boot jack. FM Light sells them and boy is it a help when removing boots (especially when one doesn't have a significant other to help on those bar crawl nights). 3) Sign up for their points program. Points never expire and you can use/accrue at Chrysalis and Moose Mountain Trading.

Yelp
On a recent trip to Steamboat Springs, I was reminded of this store by their effective signage between Kremmling & Steamboat. (They are second only to Wall Drug in southern South Dakota!) I headed there to replace my snow boots and was cheerfully greeted by Peach- a outgoing, knowledgeable new comer to Steamboat. She assisted me in finding the right boots as well as other items. Peach is a perfect addition to the great western wear store. Even if you aren't a western wear fan, you should check it out. And ask for "Peach!"

F M.

Yelp
What a fantastic place to look for Western wear. The staff are numerous, helpful, and incredibly friendly. They did a great job with children and look for what works, not to make a sale. Great selection, too.

Kat C.

Yelp
Just a fun place. Bought the family cowboy hats for our trail ride tomorrow. Reasonable and really friendly staff. Down home and funky.

The Boss K.

Yelp
Loved the iconic roadside signs! I secretly planned on going to to this store well before we ever even arrived in SB for one thing and one thing only, a Jackalope. As we were driving in my husband saw the signs and said "we should check that place out." Long story short, now I have a Jackalope.

Jeffrey E.

Yelp
I have been going to Steamboat for 55+ years starting as a young lad. F.M Light was always there, treated everyone fairly and with respect and always has a great stock of authentic western wear. Not for posers but the stuff you would need if you rode the trail every day. It was always a treat as to who could spot the first sign coming up from Denver. Then it was all hands on deck to find everyone until we came to the top of Rabbit Ears. Always a must see and visit. And always walk out with more than you came for!!!!! LOL!

K T.

Yelp
1st off: As for the advertising signs: They represent an Iconic landmark that's been run for generations from the days gone bye of the old Colorado west. I don't see anyone bitching about how many signs they see to Area 51, Disney World, Alligator Farms, See Santa @ The North Pole, McDonald's or the nearest Kum & Go. Stay home and play your video games and buy off Amazon if it bothers you. Now for the store and it's staff, merchandise and brands. An authentic, old west feeling from the minute you enter the store. Well staffed, Very helpful. Their let me know if you need anything kind of service was gotten from everyone we met there. Major brands, competitively priced and their quality of workmanship you come to expect, I love my Carhartt jeans and the Pendleton wool blankets I picked up during my visit along with a few other smaller things we got. And yes! They do also offer less expensive choices as well to fit anyone's budget. Remember. In this world, If you want nice fresh oats, You'll pay a fair price. However, if you can be satisfied with oats that have already gone thru the horse? They come a lot cheaper."

Cindy L.

Yelp
The store was smaller and had a smaller selection than I expected. It sold country bling stuff. Some decent brands, but most of it were geared towards tourists and people who wear their boots to bars. You wouldn't wear the stuff to ride a horse or do actual cowboy activities. Overall, I wasn't impressed.

Bob P.

Yelp
History!!! Such a great town Steamboat Springs! Such a cool store!!!! Total Ranch wear!!!!!!! They have the most extensive hat collection!!!! Great style! Looking for a great hat?

Kerry N.

Yelp
Absolutely refuse to step inside this store because FM Light and Sons has decided to pollute the beautiful Colorado countryside with horrid tacky signs every 1/2 mile or so along route 40 (among others). Okay 1 or 2 signs may have been okay (after all a little advertising is okay) but mile after mile of yellow signs gets a bit much. My family all thought the signs abhorrent and decided it was the best anti-advertising there was as we decided on the drive up to Steamboat to avoid it like it had the plague.

Ashley W.

Yelp
Love our new gorgeous Pendleton blanket. Adorable FM Light shirts and hats - couldn't resist getting a few. Thank you for the excellent service Thomas.

Julie S.

Yelp
Been looking for the Walt Longmire Levi's western demon shirt and bingo we finally found it here. Great place to shop.

John H.

Yelp
Cowboy up! Western Wear for Steamboat Springs, in the same location for more than one-hundred years. What a fun place: Stetson hats, Tony Lama and Dan Post boots, Carhartt and Woolrich clothing, and more. We were in town for a mountaintop wedding, and the wife decided to swap out her spikes for a new pair of southwestern-style bejeweled sandals. I wasn't sure how they would look with her little black dress, but several ladies were similarly attired, they all looked great, and I think those cushy soles doubled their time on the dance floor during the reception.

Dewayne D.

Yelp
The merchandise has deteriorated to a low level of cheap imports from India and China. A few solid brands, but mainly import wholesale stuff. The staff is as sad as the merchandise. Won't be a sixth generation. The

Yelp
Let's see... I've been going to FM Light during Steamboat trips since 1992. Long time, and these guys have been solid from beginning to end. I've also done quite a bit of boot shopping in other places, across Colorado and also in Texas, so I feel comfortable commenting on the quality and service I've received there over the years. All that said, this place is just top notch. There's something about a place where the sales people will spend time with you and talk about what you're looking for, and help you to find the boots (or hat, or shirt) that's right for you. Good, friendly people, and not just 'cause you're buying something. True, most salespeople ARE friendly before you buy. Very true. However, recently the folks at FM Light helped me out with a pair of boots I'd bought there several years before, boots that ended up having a blowout that was beyond wear and tear. They had no obligation to help me, as we were beyond the one-year warranty, but once I shot pics of the boot's heel across, they said, "Well, let us talk to the Dan Post rep and see what he says." Let's just say that I was amazed by this response, and that I was able to get the boots taken care of. I'd already been a fan of FM Light before, but now I just can't express how very impressed I am with the service orientation of this little shop up in Steamboat. A trip won't pass that I don't go into FM Light to pick something up - this experience has turned me from a fan to a supporter. I look forward to our next trip to Steamboat!

Laura N.

Yelp
I do love cowboy boots and country bling. That said, as I was driving north towards Steamboat Springs, all the yellow signs for FM Light and Sons along the winding mountain highway caught my eye. I arrived in Steamboat a bit earlier than expected and had some time to pass -- so i decided to check out FM Light and Sons. Cowboy boots? Yep. Country bling? A little bit, yes. Was I impressed? Uhm.. not really. I loved the boots and a few of the accessories in the store, but otherwise, it felt like some touristy shop with basic 'country' clothing. Nothing stood out to me. I've been in several other shops with country/Western wear that seemed more authentic than FM Light and Sons. I'm not saying the store itself wasn't authentic, but.... again, nothing stood out. I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe I was hoping for something a little more unique and less touristy. Not a bad shop, though. Always good to get a cowboy boot fix.

Doug D.

Yelp
We purchased a mug from this store along with other great items. When we got home 200 miles later we noticed the mug was cracked along the bottom and it leaked. Emailed the store and no less than 24 hrs received a reply that stated they will ship a replacement free of charge. Three days later we got our replacement mug. That's what you call great customer service!!

Jennifer O.

Yelp
Admit it: You, the City Slicker, always wanted a REAL pair of cowboy boots. Not a pair that anyone could buy at Nordie's, but a pair with glorious hand-stitched wildly fancy embroideries. A pair appropriate for your re-creation of High Noon with the local Frenemy #1. Well you, City-SlickRick, shall follow the Yellow Sign Road to downtown Steamboat. You shall get your kit on, hit it at High Noon.

Zach P.

Yelp
Would love to give a review based on service or product quality but we received zero service to understand product quality. Unless you are, or have with you, a cute woman you are on your own at FM Light and Sons. Based on the prices I saw, this place really thinks buying from a store built in 1905 is worth a premium for items you can find online.

Brooke B.

Yelp
We are traveling through CO from UT and saw signs for F.M. Light all along the way, so we had to stop in. The store has a great western selection and the staff was super friendly and helpful. Beckey was really great helping our daughter find a pair of cowgirl boots (and then me too:)). She also had great local information on what to do in town. All in all it was a great experience.

Jennifer Q.

Yelp
Just bought my first pair of boots after life in Colorado for 6 years. The salesman was knowledgeable and suggested I try on different styles... now I am a local with my awesome boots

Ann M.

Yelp
Interesting little store. You see the signs as your driving towards Steamboat Springs (Very much like South of the Border in the Carolinas). They pull you in with the promise of Levis and $6.98 hats but the store is VERY expensive. Belts were about $90, Jeans about $80, one shirt was $125, even the socks were expensive. It's a cute store and fun to look at but it's WAY too expensive.

Alden C.

Yelp
Great place that seems to have a little bit of something for everyone. My family used to get blankets from this place way back in the day. This place has been around forever...pretty much one of Steamboat's historical landmarks as far as stores go.

Thighmaster M.

Yelp
I expected it to be a little over-priced, but it wasn't, tourist town or no, prices were close enough to what we've seen on-line that we were happy to buy a Pendleton blanket from them without feeling robbed. They have a selection (and prices) that range from tourist kitsch to the real thing - Pendleton blankets, Lucchese boots, Skully shirts/jackets... staff were great. No sense of burn-out whatsoever. I felt like they understood how important it is for a town like Steamboat to make one feel welcome... as a tourist no less.

Lisa D.

Yelp
The other day, as I was shopping downtown, I cannot say how quickly, and warmly, I was greeted before I had 2 feet in the door at FM Light and sons! I take that personally., as this town is traditionally very friendly, and I know I can choose to shop locally, or just us my laptop on the Internet. I enjoy the many options they have from boots (my Old Gringo's are complimented almost everyday) to western handbags, to clothing! Plus, they have great sales from time to time!!

Erica F.

Yelp
I was in this store over the weekend and now getting a chance to review the biz on Yelp. First off, I seriously can't believe people took the time to blather about how much the signs on the drive in to Steamboat upset them and leave a 1-star review based on nothing more. Jesus, people are so sensitive! The signs are historical, kitschy, and fun - and nothing to get so freaked out about!! I quite enjoy their silliness during the drive to the 'boat. Now, my experience in the store was excellent. The store has that old, weathered wood and leather smell, that is wonderful. I had at least 4 different salespersons check on me and ask if I had any Qs. Even when I was poking around the back "clearance" section at the rear of the store! They have a wide selection of western wear - many, many pairs of Wrangler jeans, and lots of bedazzled rodeo-style clothes if you're into that. They also have beautiful, high quality Pendleton wool blankets and a HUGE assortment of cowboy boots and winter boots. Plus, a lot of local tchotchkies like handmade soaps and hot sauces to peruse at the front of the store. I liked their toy area in the back part of the store, bought some cute stuffed animals for my sister's kids. There are also some great old school toys and puzzles to browse. I quite enjoy stopping here when we visit Steamboat!

Tom K.

Yelp
This review is based on the dozens and dozens of builboards littering the beautiful colorado scenery. Haven't been in the store and won't go.

Pat B.

Yelp
The ladies that helped me were so courteous and knowledgeable. I had had foot surgery months before that resulted in complex regional chronic pain syndrome. The gals were very patient with me and found the first comfortable shoes I had had in 4 months. They fixed me up with a pair of Twisted X shoes that allowed me to walk more normal, resulting in a big turning point in my healing. By the time we got back home (NW Kansas), I was able to resume a much more normal life. Love the Twisted X shoes. A BIG THANK YOU to the ladies that helped me into more than just good shoes. Watch out, I plan to be back.

Shiho F.

Yelp
Yee haw! This place has a plethora of fun western gear. Hot cowboy shirts (modern ones too) for men, lots of cowboy boots and Western accessories. You can enter a man and leave a cowboy if you wanted to here.

James H.

Yelp
This merchant has chosen to mar the otherwise beautiful Colorado countryside with cheap, tacky, poorly-executed, amateurish signs every quarter to half mile for an hour as you drive into Steamboat Springs from the east. Thankfully they can't post them in the National Forest so there is some respite from the over-the-top excessive advertising. Because of these practices this will be the last store I will EVER consider shopping at in Steamboat.

Bo H.

Yelp
Great selection of boots. Rivals the boot retailers in Austin, TX. Staff was really helpful. Jaimie helped me pick out a new pair of Justins, and didn't mind that I was picky, she just kept grabbing pairs off the shelf and helping me to try them on. Not pushy at all, but very informative.

Michael B.

Yelp
Excellent selection of hats and belts. Great service! Need such a store as this in the Midwest.

Lena S.

Yelp
Excellent clothing and apparel store! Great employee customer service! My only gripe would be with the "manager". "Peggy" or "peg" maybe??? I overheard her being quite nasty to an employee while I was shopping. I LOVE to support local business while I travel , however I have NO tolerance for nasty people like that!!! I ended up walking out because I was that bothered by her actions. I was conversing with some locals I had met later on that night and I told them of this experience I had at FM LIGHTS. When I brought the name Peggy up I heard some stories. A long time manager that has a history of being rude and nasty... A big bummer for this store. Sounds like its time for ownership to make change in management. Employees first. Would have loved to give FM LIGHTS 5 stars if not for this women!

Sasha G.

Yelp
Very neat, family owned place. Like another reviewer said, this place has a little something for everyone. Every time we've been there the service has been excellent and you can sense the hometown feel. We love going in there, and we'll definetly be repeat customers. It's nice to support local business like this instead of all these chain stores.
