My experience at Faber was memorable, but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. My favourite thing about visiting smaller wineries is being able to learn from the Wine Maker and the team firsthand.
However, this was not the case at Faber. At the early stage of the tasting I asked the wine maker a question about the style of the Chardonnay and his response was “I could give you a detailed answer, but it will just go over your head”. A presumptuous comment, and I can only assume it’s because I’m a young woman.
I was naturally quite taken aback and explained that I had a strong interest in wine. However, it didn’t improve the experience and he proceeded to be rude and made me feel extremely uncomfortable. I bought one bottle of wine to cover the cost of the tasting and left. It’s a shame, because I genuinely liked the majority of the wines, but at the end of the day, people buy from people and there are many other boutique wineries that I would rather support.
