"Tropical Fabric and Quilts The art of quilting, a Hawaiian pastime with its own style and patterns, can be found in shops around the Big Island. Key ingredients to a good Hawaiian quilt include using a repetitive silhouette shape or design and appliquéing pieces on to the quilt rather than sewing fabric pieces together. Popular designs are floral in nature and often include the pineapple. To see the beautiful fabric artwork, visit Fabric Impressions in Hilo. If you want to try your hand at the art of quilting, ask for some instruction, and pick out some fabrics and a simple (probably small) pattern. For those experienced quilters, give the Hawaiian style a try or come up with your own Island inspired design!"
Nice selection of batiks and hawian prints. Good prices. Staff is not your typical warm and fuzzy quilt store staff. Not chatty, no smiles, zero curiosity about what I was making. Very different than what I usually encounter in the quilt shops I visit as I travel. Maybe they are only friendly to locals? I got what I wanted to make a quilt to remember our vacation by, but I will try and forget the shop itself as quickly as possible. They also have a nice selection of locally made goods- bags, quilts, that kind of thing.

Went to this place looking for Hawaiian Quilting books and supplies. An older lady helped us and she was so rude and short with us. Pointed us to some books along the wall (in a manner that inidcated we should of known where the books where) that had nothing to do with Hawaiian Quilting, just plain quilting. I'll never give them my business.
