Luckily, we came across the community museum on the last day of our visit in Fairbanks. What a find! Besides interesting local history of Fairbanks, there was a terrific exhibit of mushing. Lots of information about the history (sleds, men AND women mushers) of the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest. Many different kinds of sleds were exhibited and extremely interesting. We came across the museum by accident and were so glad we took the time to enjoy. It was very interesting and informative. The dog mushing museum is filled with a bunch of cool artifacts and memorabilia that can have you in there for a couple hours. There are a great couple videos that provide an awesome amount of informational content and there are a lot of great restaurants nearby to fill up on some food before you jump back in. The museum is free but its always great to donate some money to keep supporting the shop.

Google
Absolute must visit if you’re interested in learning about Alaska/Fairbanks origins. They also include a special dog mushing museum to showcase original dog sled carts. The museum isn’t very large but it’s absolutely packed with artifacts and detailed information.

Although the museum’s setting is nothing fancy, I was impressed by the content. I liked the display about Togo the dog, the exhibit about the 1967 Fairbanks flood, the story of Irene, the “queen of Fairbanks,” and more—including the original newspaper cuttings of coverage on the 1964 Great Earthquake and the 1989 Valdez oil spill.

I really enjoyed this museum as a Fairbanks local. Would highly recommend visiting to learn a little about an important part of Fairbanks history. #cough nuggets

Google
Great community museum dedicated mostly to dogsledding but with a few other items on display. Free entry and well worth a walkthrough.

Google
Awesome free museum that tells you all about the rich history of dog sledding, they have silent auctions where we’re I was able to win a Victorian photo album. The staff is super nice and helpful and truly care able the history they are keeping alive, I definitely recommend this stop if you’re in Fairbanks, can’t beat free, but leave a tip for these beautiful people if you can.

Yelp
I don't normally rate museums, but what the heck? Not sure why anyone would give this place a low rating. This is a FREE museum that was recommended by our local rideshare driver and offers a bit of history of Alaska and dog sledding. Sure, it's small and a bit run down, but it's got character. My favorite was the "101 Things To Do in Fairbanks Alaska", which actually listed 101 things to do infused with some wit such as "complain about all the tourists asking about the northern lights ". I can't help but appreciate the locals' humor which I encountered throughout my visit to Fairbanks. It's located upstairs in the Co-op Plaza. Winter hours are limited from 11AM-3PM, so if you happen to be in the area during opening hours, please stop by. Did I mention it's free?

Yelp
It's a free museum. Yes it doesn't have a lot and will probably only take 5-10 minutes of your time. However, it's free. It's hard to hate any free museum. It has some amazing history elements and truly a gem for being so small. Definitely recommend this small free museum.

Yelp
This museum is mostly about dogsledding and mushers. It's free and located on the second floor of an empty shopping center. It's kind of handicapped accessible but would take some work to get in. The displays are dated, there are some seats for a video that I couldn't figure out how to watch, and unless you really want to learn about dogsledding and various dog races, I'd pass on this. There is a little display about Mary Shields, who was the first female dog sledder to competed, so props to that.

Yelp
If you're in Fairbanks for a couple hours, this is a great place to stop in and learn about the city and the area. It's very unassuming from the outside, but it's free and unlike anything I've experienced before. Definitely could use a facelift, but for what they're working with, it's worth a visit for sure! There are different themes covered by the exhibits ranging from the city's history, to the history of the gold rush (complete with a mockup of a gold miner's tent setup), to an exhibit on dog sledding/mushing. Cool place!
