We stayed at Fairmont Rio de Janeiro Copacabana for an anniversary trip booked through the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts program. The property itself is beautiful and the location in Copacabana is excellent, but unfortunately the overall experience did not match what we expected from a luxury stay for such a special occasion.
From the beginning there were several communication gaps. Arrangements we had discussed in advance with the hotel and concierge were not always reflected when we arrived. For example, the restaurant we had reserved for our anniversary dinner had not been informed of the occasion, which meant we had to explain it ourselves when we arrived. Fortunately the restaurant manager was very accommodating and helped move us to a better table with a beautiful view, which we appreciated.
We also experienced a long wait for our room on arrival, and the room we ultimately received did not feel like a meaningful upgrade despite booking through the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts program. The room itself was comfortable, but the experience didn’t align with the expectations typically associated with both the Fairmont brand and the FHR program.
To the staff’s credit, individual team members were kind and did their best to help when concerns were raised. The hotel also honored the FHR late checkout, which was appreciated given our late flight departure.
One additional note worth mentioning is that there was occasionally an unpleasant sewage-like odor coming from the bathroom drain. Under normal circumstances we likely would have asked the hotel to address it, but given the other issues that had already occurred during the stay, we chose not to raise another complaint at the time.
Later in the stay the hotel attempted some service recovery gestures, which were appreciated, but these came fairly late and didn’t meaningfully change the overall experience.
Rio itself was fantastic and we still had some wonderful moments during the trip — visiting Christ the Redeemer and hiking in Tijuca Forest were definite highlights. However, the hotel portion of the stay ultimately fell short of what we expected for an anniversary trip at a luxury property participating in the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts program.
