How Australia's Tourism Industry Is Recovering a Year After the Devastating Bushfires

"In the Gippsland region of Victoria, one of the worst hit by the fires, the tiny country town of Buchan received the ultimate jumpstart when its star attraction, the Buchan Caves — the largest cave system in the state — reopened just days before Christmas. "I was racing around on opening day, making sure tours were running on time and helping visitors, and I had this moment where it was like, 'Ah, this is what we used to do,'" says Hamish Hancock, ranger team leader for Parks Victoria at the Buchan Caves Reserve, who spent the better part of 2020 remediating the site." - Travel + Leisure Editors

If you’re staying in Lakes Entrance, it’s definitely worth the 45-minute drive to Buchan, where the Fairy Cave is located. It’s a well-preserved cave where you can see beautiful stalagmites and stalactites. Make sure to book ahead, especially during school holidays. We were about 5 to 10 minutes late, but the tour guide still accommodated our group of 20.

It was a great experience especially for a small group. Plenty of things to learn from, the history and so on. An interesting cave with narrow walkways but manageable.

Literally so pretty! So worth visiting. Was planning to see both Royal and Fairy Caves but the reviews said that they both looks the same. Might go see Royal Cave next time though.

My fiancé and I recently visited the Fairy Cave, and it was such a fun experience! Our tour guide was incredibly friendly and happy to answer any questions. We went on a Tuesday afternoon, and the group was nearly full, so I recommend buying tickets online in advance. Our visit cost about $40 for both of us. The tour lasted around 45 minutes to an hour, allowing plenty of time for photos and exploration. This cave is considered the more “difficult” option between the two, with several stairs and some crouching involved. However, it’s definitely manageable, and I was pleasantly surprised—I didn’t feel claustrophobic at all. Although we only got to explore half of the cave due to maintenance on the other sections, it was still an exciting adventure. I highly recommend visiting if you’re in the area and looking for something fun to do!

The entire area around Buchan is truly beautiful. However, to visit the caves you must take a guided tour, and at $150 for the 2 of us we simply couldn't afford it. That said there are numerous walks you can do for free...outside the caves!

The visit to Fairy Cave was well worth our time. The travel there was easy and so was the climb from the carpark to the entrance of the cave. The tour of the cave took 45 minutes and was a most interesting and informative one. The guide was very good in explaining the various geological features. A must visit when you visit Buchan.
