Yelp
This review is on the Moraine Trail at Fallen Leaf Lake, and NOT on the Campground.
The Moraine Trail itself is NOT listed on Yelp, yet. Thus, I am posting this review on the Fallen Leaf Lake Campground.
- At any rate, its trailhead is at the parking lot of the campground. Parking is FREE. By the trailhead, there are a few picnic tables for your pleasure.
It's an easy, flat, 2.5mile (round trip) scenic trail through the woods, along a small running stream, or along the lake shoreline, to a narrow dam bridge - and BEYOND! It's great for ALL ages and wonderful for walking dogs, also. One can also EXTEND the distance by crossing the dam bridge and hike farther in.
Oh, there's a tiny beach along the shoreline trail by the lake, which runs parallel to the Moraine Trail. One can go swimming or fishing there!
DETAILS
At the trailhead off the parking lot, there is a sign with an arrow pointing to the right for the Moraine Trail. What it does not tell you is you CAN turn to the LEFT and head to the shoreline trail along the lake and a tiny beach! But it does not really matter actually which trail you start on, you can always loop back to the parking lot on the other trail.
Taylor Creek, a charming little stream runs along the trail. And about 1/3 into the woods, you'll see an amazing, gigantic, LIVE, HOLLOW TREE, which can accommodate 2 or more adults standing together inside its trunk! That's probably the most popular spot for pics on the trail! To relax over a snack, there are a few sitting benches along the trail, also.
Near the "end" of the trail, you will see a very narrow dam/bridge with controls for the dam! At this point you have several options, either trekking back on the same trail or take the shoreline trail along the lake back to the campground lot. Or...
Well, this dam bridge certainly does not have to be the "END" of your hike. You can venture out farther along the lake shore beyond the bridge, or turn right over the bridge and follow the trail into the woods to until about a mile in, where you would run across a stream on the right side. There is large wood trunk above and across the creek, leading back to the campground. However, I myself have not tried crossing the creek, so I am not quite sure about that particular route. I was too chicken to get on that wood trunk to cross the stream, I just back trekked to cross the dam bridge again, and hiked back to the campground parking lot along the lakeshore trail. We had another wonderful hiking experience that day! On our hike, we saw many happy campers and hikers enjoying the lake, the beach, the trails...!
By the way, some campers said they had spotted bears on the campground. However, over 2 decades of hiking in Lake Tahoe, we ourselves have NOT crossed path with a bear on any hiking TRAIL.
GETTING THERE
Coming from Lake Tahoe on Highway 89N, turn left on to Fallen Leaf Road; continue on 2/3 of a mile into the Fallen Leaf Campground. The parking lot is nearby camp site No.75.
- The road itself is mostly a narrow, 1-lane road, so please be careful and courteous driving out there. There are plenty clearings off the road, however, for the maneuvers with the oncoming cars.
MY SUBJECTIVE RATING
As an old man, I give it 5* for its beauty, charm, and its "Great for All Ages" EASINESS!
For hikers who thrive on steep climbs, I think they would agree with a 4* rating, due to its lack of such challenge.
Go enjoy!
