FAMM opened in 2024. It is a small museum dedicated to works by female artists. And it is brilliant. As I walked in, I heard someone who was just leaving say to his family “That’s the best museum I’ve seen in years!” – and I can see why.
Small, it is. See the photos for how closely the paintings are hung to each other (there are some sculptures, but mainly paintings are featured). It consists of 4 floors, each with a different theme. And each floor is enjoyable in its own way. Being located in the ancient hilltop village of Mougins, it is located in very old buildings; I think a few have been knocked together and their spaces combined to create the four narrow open plan floors. The quality of the architecture, and of the building finishes, is excellent; notably, a cool staircase spirals around an even cooler glass-walled elevator at one end.
There are paintings (yes, and a few sculptures) from the impressionist era to the present day. You’ll see paintings by famous and not-so-famous artists. So the collection includes works by (in no particular order) Berthe Morisot, Tracey Emin, Louise Bourgeois, Niki De Saint Phalle, Nan Golding, Barbara Hepworth and Dora Maar. But also artists I have never come across before, such as Joan Semmel, Delphine Diallo and many more. Apparently there are about 100 paintings, and the intention is to change them from time to time. It’s a great arty experience to see them hung in these beautiful small spaces.
As a bonus the reception staff were friendly (entrance is not free, but is very good value); my only criticism is that the free information booklet majors on the artists rather than describing the paintings.
Good for over an hour’s visit, at least once every year.
