If You Love Architecture, Visit New Canaan, Connecticut in Fall | Condé Nast Traveler

"Celebrating local bounty, Farmer’s Table sees chef Robert Ubaldo cooking with vegetables from his own gardens and meat and poultry from his brother’s John Boy’s Farm in New York, turning out simple dishes where the freshness shines—think shrimp mojo or hanger steak." - Jessica Sulima

Enjoyed a hearty meal after a visit of the glass house and the shrimp pasta is quite satisfying with fresh ingredients and layered flavors.

From the moment you walk through the twinkling archway, and are warmly greeted, this is a first class dining experience. The Humboldt Fog goats cheese with mushrooms and shallots on toast is our go-to app. Do not visit without trying the Crab Bisque - it so delicious that we ended up ordering a couple of quarts to go. A special on the menu was the Duck Quesadilla with cherries and I am already craving it again. My husband's steak was delicious. We always forget to take any pictures because we are too busy devouring the food. I wish they would go on Opentable or Resy, but even calling them up to make a reservation is old school charming, just like Chef Robert and Lucia.

Google
Farmer's Table is a favorite in our family. We go there often and know the chef and many of the other staff. The food is delicious, the specials are interesting, and the quality is consistent.

Google
The food is amazing. The staff is extremely friendly. The ambiance is lovely. One of the best spots in New Canaan.

Evelyn

Google
I absolutely like the concept of "farm to plate". I'm a 'healthy eater' and this restaurant has given me nothing but the best. Lucia is the best- absolutely nice on phone and very pleasant in person

Brent

Google
Such a nice restaurant. Fantastic food, great menu. Excellent drinks and a nice vibe. A definite go.

Google
Phenomenal. Real food. Crab Bisque is consistently delicious. Hanger Steak is well worth it. We always have a great time here! Staff is the best. Well done, chef.

Google
We walked in early on a Saturday evening to see if they had a table for 4 (after the restaurant we had originally booked looked grim...) and were immediately greeted with warmth and professionalism. They offered to create a 4 top for us in a quiet corner and whisked us to the table. The service and food that followed were both terrific. A great lesson in hospitality. Make people feel welcome and feed them terrific, straight forward food with attentive but not overbearing service and reasonable prices!

Yelp
Fantastic spot. We had the Hanger Steak, Chicken Lo Mein, Pork Chop, and the Shrimp Parpardelle. I'm not a mashed potato guy but the mash potatoes are fantastic! We started with the Duck Confit Quesadilla which was excellent! Highly recommend a stop if you are in the area.

Yelp
Had dinner with a large group and they did a great job hosting us. Service was great and food was hot and fresh. Would like to go back and try some different menu options but the group was overwhelmingly happy with the experience.

Yelp
A relaxing casual place to have a healthy meal. The food is freshly prepared and delicious. My husband and I like to share to not over eat. The arugula salad with walnuts and fried rice bowl with vegetables and chicken was plenty for both of us. Service was great too!

Yelp
Phenomenal. Real food. Put their foot in the jerk kitchen. Look up the phrase. Crab Bisque is consistently delicious. Hanger Steak is well worth it. We always have a great time here! Staff is the best. Well done, chef.

Yelp
Quality eatery on a restaurant row street in New Canaan. Cute ambiance with a rustic theme and a cool entry way with straw and farm theme. The service was excellent and attentive. The vodka, lemonade cocktail was tasty but quite weak. An extra splash of vodka wouldn't hurt. We started with the crab bisque which was delicious. The Cobb salad was a solid A- while the steak tacos were filling, perhaps slightly too heavy. The Key Lime Pie was superb. Our dining mate had the mushroom pasta on special which looked divine. I'd recommend adding it to the regular menu.

Yelp
One of the signs of a great restaurant is delivering delicious food consistently. Farmer's Table does that in spades and I'm so glad they do because I will always order their amazing Shrimp Mojo every time I dine here. It's dazzling-the flavor...yes, my mouth is watering just thinking about it! I've never had beans cooked so perfectly...every single time (never stringy, always tender), the wild rice...the sauce...OMG it's all so delicious. That quiet, unassuming, kind, aproned man is making magic in that kitchen every night, and lucky for us that he is. He's a food artist, and clearly loves what he does. This husband/wife team is truly an "A" team. Thank you for doing what you do so passionately well for all of us. p.s. best bread in town to boot.

Yelp
Recently we had the pleasure of eating at the Farmer's Table, there are daily special's along with a set menu. We ordered the Stir Fry Lomein with shrimp, the vegetables were fresh and it was served a wonderful cream sauce, there was not a bite left. The shrimp tacos were also a hit, they were served with large fresh shrimp . This was accompanied by a glass of wine. The meal was topped off with a piece of key lime pie. Always save room for dessert. The staff was professional and friendly and answered any questions we had about the menu. If you want a nice meal out this is your place. We were visiting with family, this restaurant is on the list of places we want to come back to.

Yelp
First visit was pleasant experience. Bread for the table, always a good tip for what to expect, was excellent. Wine list adequate. Pan seared duck was perfectly prepared and well presented.

Yelp
Menu is a tad misleading given the name of the restaurant (for instance; tacos, lo mein, and shrimp). Quaint local feel with plating which is overly simple and direct. Service is nothing rememberable. One of those places that if you're hungry and nearby; it will satisfy. Comfort food at higher end prices. Nothing overly exciting. Not a destination for me but also wouldn't avoid if walking by.

Andrew F.

Yelp
Nice ambiance, good food and great service. A really nice local restaurant with a good vibe.

Yelp
Great food and service. The jerk chicken was cooked to perfection. Beat salad was fresh and excellent.

Yelp
The restaurant is located on a lovely street in New Canaan and offered great seating for a lazy summer evening. We walked into the restaurant and immediately smelled the aroma of fresh bake bread. That bread was put to good use when we ordered the special camembert appetizer. The combination of camembert, honey, balsamic vinegar was simply divine! Their home-grown wild arugula salad also hit the spot since we had just visited the Grace Farms earlier in the day. For my main course, I ordered the special jerk chicken. The chicken was a tad on the dry side, but the seasoning for the accompanying mash potato was pretty good. Definitely will return to try other things on the menu if we're in the area again!

Yelp
Nice, friendly setting. Enjoyed my meal and evening. Why is there a minimum characters for this...

Yelp
One of the best meals I've had in a really long time! Food was fresh, wonderfully prepared and presented. Service was great.! But the noise factor is just awful. seriously. I couldn't wait to get outside to get peace and quiet after sitting there for an hour. I don't understand why restaurant owners think that people want to spend good money to sit in an atmosphere That is so loud. Kudos to the chef as it was a wonderful meal however, the hostess needs to crack a smile once in a while, and maybe say thank you for coming when she sees you leave . It's like she was doing you a big favor to come to her establishment and listen to loud noise!

Yelp
Just terrific- loved the fresh ingredients in all the food. The staff is nice and the place has a great vibe. I know that this isn't a long, descriptive review, but to me how the place made me feel from my experience is of value to me. I'm coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
Impressive locally sourced menu and great service! I would recommend to everyone. Couples or families.

Yelp
Fantastic breakfast. Really can't go wrong with whatever you order. Coffee is great, bring home a bag! Ambience feels like an old fashioned country home. Always come here when I'm in NY
google avatar

Porkus G.

Yelp
The NY Strip steak is Devine. Order medium rare with their home made steak sauce. Better than most steak houses.

Leslie T.

Yelp
I LOVE this restaurant--food is fantastic! really nice ambience and the best home baked bread (that you can buy). one of my favorite restaurants in the area.

Yelp
Simply perfect, the absolute real deal. In a world disguised with fake smiles recent trends and poor quality meals dressed up, Farmers Table is an uncut perfect gem radiating in its own true light far from others. An over abundance of realness resonated, leaving us wanting more, not just at the restaurant but in all of life, unmasked pure quality. Farmers Table doesn't need to follow the trend of listing the local farms they source from, you just know from the first look and then validated by the first bite that this food came straight from the farm, a level of unmodified freshness usually not found in this county. Meals were prepared with just the right touch of culinary spice making them absolutely delectable. There's no crutches of overused creams salts or sugars, the chef has masterfully crafted a perfect balance in every dish. The environment and waitstaff match the food. Service was attentive but not in your face with fake smiles. The decorations and tables were authentically country rustic delivering a true charm on a completely different level from your typical restoration hardware facades. In the background played classic Fairfield County anthems of old school roots reggae, soft enough that most wouldn't notice the voices of Desmond Dekker, John Holt, and Toots unless they were true Fairfield County OG's, again staying genuine to their environment. My only regret is not having come sooner, The Farmer's Table will be a new regular and I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Lamb chops were absolutely delicious. Service was very attentive. Ambiance was cozy with low buzz but not loud at all.

Anthony F.

Yelp
I love to dine out and the food is phenomenal! I have been back frequently and it never disappoints. Everything is fresh, tasty and the service is impeccable. It is evident that the owners take pride in their cuisine and in making their patrons feel at home. Anything I have tried (and I have been back several times) was outstanding! I don't have a sweet tooth, but I must say that I seem to order one of their fresh house desserts every time I'm there. I would highly recommend!

Yelp
Good farm to Table food at reasonable prices. Good variety. Wish they were open for lunch and every night during the week.

Yelp
The beef stew is excellent and love their sourdough. Friendly service. The portion is generous. The beef is tender and will melt in your mouth.
google avatar

Yelp
We were turned away with the excuse that they were at capacity. Plenty of empty tables. We had an infant in a stroller at the time. Would have left anyways due to the heavy odor of burnt food inside the restaurant. Never tried the food nor would return to try.

Yelp
Went here for dinner and was not expecting such a nice mix of foods. My shrimp with mijo was perfect and the vegetables were perfectly cooked- so tasty. Also got an excellent martini.

Lydia G.

Yelp
Food was very tasty and fresh because some of it was picked from the gardens that day. Chef had interesting compositions which we love to try. We will be back.

Yelp
Delicious! Delicious! Inventive menu, fresh and seasonal offerings. Service and atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly. We keep going back and this place just keeps getting better and better. DELICIOUS is still the best word I can think of to describe. I recently had a pasta with seasonal mushroom sauce that was awesome. Try the cheese plate as a shared appetizer or desert, if you like cheese you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Best chop I have had in 3 yesrs... very good. Food great, so is service. It's European..... not new canaan. That may damper reviews, but this is a good spot. Great food. Attentive to customers. Enjoy!

Yelp
Quality, farm to table, fresh, delicious, gourmet, tasty, local ingredients, transparency from kitchen to diner because you can see into the kitchen easily. Sometimes the calling and reservation process is a pain.

Yelp
When the weather is perfect, outside seating is a must. They don't take reservation for outside seating though, it's first comes first served. We got lucky and landed a table for 6PM dinner on a Friday. The place is quaint, situated next to a small street..perfect for people and cars watching. Food selections on the menu isn't large, but everything sounds delicious. I started with a cup of roasted corn soup and ended up with their special; scallops with mojo sauce served with wild rice pilaf and a side of perfectly cooked string beans and carrots. My companion ordered steak tacos. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite of the soup and my entree. Soup was warm, fresh, and perfectly seasoned. Scallops were melt in your mouth good. Wild rice pilaf, surprisingly was soft and very tasty with the mojo sauce. Location is great and it is farm fresh food, what's not to love? Steak tacos look a little sad though. The plate had 2 good size tacos and no other sides or garnish. But my companion enjoyed them. I will be returning here again. Although food took a bit too long for our table. Other people seemed to be getting their food within a reasonable amount of time. Otherwise everything was delightful.

Yelp
Service was great! Fast, friendly, and on top of it all! Ingredients were very fresh, the crap soup delish! Kinda a mix between a she crab and lobster bisque. Halibut was a little dry and bland, but the sauce was very tasty!

Yelp
Such a cute spot on Forest Street in New Canaan! The hearty, stick-to-your-ribs fare is simple, fresh, well-prepared and thoughtfully sourced. I'm still dreaming about the mushrooms and fog appetizer -- a must-order if you love mushrooms, cheese and deliciousness. Ambiance is lovely, and service was prompt and friendly. We'll definitely be back!

Bradley K.

Yelp
Been dining and and taking out for a few years. Their take out is really good as extra care is made to a make the presentation look as nice as it does for dining in. This is a family owned restaurant and you will most likely be greeted by the owner.
google avatar

Victoria K.

Yelp
Such a wonderful dining experience. The food was fresh the workers were very friendly. The bread was spectacular. I highly suggest the cabernet sauvignon. So pleased.
google avatar

Mary B.

Yelp
Absolutely love this restaurant. The beet salad is amazing. Love the lamb. The steak is cooked to perfection. Chicken is also awesome. Have never had anything bad here

Thea W.

Yelp
If the food was amazing, then I could understand the poor service. Think the Soup Nazi episode of Seinfeld. This is like that, but with bad food. The waitress was very dismissive of our table. The vegetables had no seasoning, neither did my friend's shrimp dish. The table behind me got 3 of 4 entrees and they just left the woman waiting for her entree almost the entire meal and were not even apologetic! The thing they were the quickest with was the check. I was really excited to go here, but definitely won't be back. There are other overpriced restaurants in New Canaan that know how to use salt and pepper and treat customers.
google avatar

Yelp
A delightful dining experience, especially for my VEGAN wife and daughter. Diverse and totally fresh menu, efficient and unobtrusive service. Kitchen more than willing to modify dishes for dietary preference and hyper-vigilant about allergies.
google avatar

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE farmers table. From the cute ambience to the delicious menu, this is a MUST TRY in fairfield county. I recently brought family from out of town, and it served as the perfect backdrop for a family get-together. The staff goes above and beyond to be helpful. As an added bonus for me, the gluten free options are plentiful and labelled! If you have a chance, try the flourless chocolate cake! It is exceptional!
google avatar

Claude R.

Yelp
I went here with a friend and the food was oralgasmic (a word I invented when something is much better than delicious). I had the crab bisque and the baked scallops. The wait staff was really helpful. It's a little pricey, but so worth it.

Yelp
We had set out to have Mexican next door but there was an hour wait for a table. Since it was guys night out we were flexible and walked into the restaurant next door, Farmer Table. I was happy to say that the nice lady greeting us at the door was able to fit us in with no wait. That was luck and certainly is not typical for dinner out in New Canaan on a Friday night. All for of us guys choose to make it a burger night with soup and apps. The burgers were very good. The soup was a seafood chowder and exceeded my expectation being the snotty New England chowder guy that I am. LOL. The service was very good. Our waiter, obviously busy, regularly looked in our direction and visited the table numerous times. The pricing for a New Canaan restaurant was very reasonable. Four guys having dinner, soups, apps, and drinks was under $200. Not bad.

Yelp
The lines between farm stand and restaurant are growing ever more blurry with the recent opening of Farmers Table on Forest Street in New Canaan, a hybrid farmers market, bakery and the latest restaurant to embrace the farm-to-table dining trend. Intimate in both name and practice, the tiny 6 top restaurant delivers farm fresh hospitality with a farm stand persona. Eating at Farmers Table is like inviting yourself to dinner at a friend's house, armed with a bottle of wine and primed for small talk. Chef/owner Robert Ubaldo has made the cozy restaurant feel as if you've invited yourself into his home, with fresh loaves of bread cooling on racks, bowls of fresh vegetables on the counter and conversations with fellow diners that naturally extend beyond the boundaries of each table. Chef Ubaldo previously cooked in the neighborhood at Tequila Mockingbird, as well as Southwest Cafe in Ridgefield. The local and organic produce you'll find on the menu is sourced from his brother's upstate NY farm, John Boy in Cambridge New York, or Ubaldo's own back yard in Pound Ridge. The menu is short and sweet and perfectly suited for lunch, take-out or an unadorned BYOB dinner. A soup, a few salads, a short list of entrees, and two desserts were offered on a recent visit. A friend and I split each course, starting with a few hunks of freshly baked bread with rosemary and zucchini. Eating these slices of bread in their freshly baked glory turned out to be the highlight of our farm fresh evening. A beet and goat cheese salad and an order of chicken quesadillas came out together as requested. The salad, a pile of roasted beets, goat cheese, walnuts, and lettuce was lightly dressed and nicely executed. This marriage of beets and fresh greens and goat cheese we all know so well is a welcome way to embrace some of the last fresh greens of the summer. The quesadillas boasted a sweet and savory filling of pineapple, cheese and chicken, the technique, no doubt perfected during his tenure at Tequila Mockingbird and Ridgefield's Southwest Cafe. Soon after a bowl of heirloom tomatoes made the rounds in the dining room, and I gladly popped a few in my mouth. An appropriate amuse bouche for this split personality space that was becoming more farm stand by the moment. Dessert beckoned and we opted for a slice of key lime pie sprinkled with delicate little bits of mango and strawberries over the other more decadent option of a flourless chocolate cake. It was a good call to end our light summer meal. The bright and creamy flavors of the pie brought our meal back full circle to the bright and light acidity of our beet salad. I left my meal half expecting to stumble onto a tilled field and not Forest Street in New Canaan, a gentle reminder that we eat is food that comes from the earth, cultivated by very real people like the Ubaldos which doesn't necessitate the pomp and circumstance of a traditional restaurant scene. Farmers Table packs a substantial local and organic punch into a tiny footprint, nudging the boundaries of a traditional dining experience and also raising the bar of what we may come to expect from a farm stand. It's safe to say our farm-to-table dining trend is continuing to explore its proverbial roots.

Yelp
Very rude people. We wanted to make a reservation and called around 11am and no one answered. I googled farmers table New CANAAN open table thought I made a reservation online. Showed up on time and was treated like horribly. The hostess was rude and told me we probably made a reservation at farmers table in Florida. Meanwhile half the restaurant was empty. She wouldn't even look us in the eye as she ignored our party of three. We left and went to gates which was great. Walking by at 8:30 two hours later the restaurant was still half empty. Turns out they don't take online reservations and we made the mistake but they handled it like we were homlesss people looking for a handout. Don't go here. They won't last with that customer service. Go to sole or gates.

Yelp
Best restaurant in New Canaan. Chef Robert's food is consistently delicious and with attention to detail. We've been enjoying his food for years. And the service is fantastic. Lucia is wonderfully warm, attentive and makes the experience truly special. The ambience is rustic, warm and charming. Love this place!

Yelp
Very impressive showing from Farmer's Table. The menu changes regularly, which is the hallmark of a farm-to-table restaurant. The seafood chowder is fantastic -- well balanced with the right consistency. The lamb chops could be some of the best I've ever had and the salmon is excellent. How a restaurant does its salmon is always interesting, because just about everyone either creates a boring slab of pink fish or, to avoid that, an overly dressed pink amalgamation of spices and glazes. Here -- it's just the right mix. Wine list is average but they offer a few interesting beers. Drawback #1: no website makes it hard to see what is on the menu.

Yelp
Best restaurant in town expanded and became one of the top restaurants in the region. Everything is farm fresh and cooked well. Some of the other reviews are anti hype reviews. Don't pay attention to them. Go here and eat all the food you can in good conscience.
google avatar

Liz D.

Yelp
Farmer's Table is a tiny establishment, but the food is fresh, seasonal and delish. I've been here for lunch on a few ocassions and I've never been disappointed. The menu changes frequently so the only way of knowing what's available is to give them a call. Soups, stews, eggs, meats and farm-fresh veggies are also available to purchase from a cold case. I'm gluten-free, but the breads they have available look outstanding and smell incredible. Looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
Farmers table has exquisite service, flavorful food and a great ambiance. My meal was fresh and the kitchen is accommodating with allergies and preferences. I highly recommend Farmers Table and plan to come back soon!

Yelp
I was in the area for a business trip and wanted to try something new. I wandered down Forest St to see where I wanted to eat and came across Farmer's Table. It is a very small space (room for 15-20) so if you have your heart set on eating here a reservation is probably best. I walked in and was greeted immediately and seated at a table near the open door (it was screened so no bugs). I was in a seafood mood so I ordered a crab and shrimp soup as well as the scallop special. I was unsure of the soup, so I was offered a sample (surprisingly generous) to try before I committed to ordering. The soup was delicious, a little spicy which I liked, so I ordered a cup. I also got the scallops which came with a grain and asparagus on the side. The scallops were cooked well as was the asparagus. I like the grain, but was quite full after the soup so I chose to focus on eating the scallops and asparagus. The service was great and the food was very fresh. If I lived in the area, this would definitely be one of my local favorites.
