Great family style group meal

We stumbled upon this gem of an outlet with the intention to taste Ethiopian cuisine. This was our first time try this unique and interesting cuisine. The ambiance was quite cozy and homely. The servers were very friendly and helpful. The food was good. The injera bread reminded me of fluffy Indian dosa. The split pea curry, the spinach, cabbage, different types of lentil curries and the dry chicken stuff was good. The chicken was a bit too salty to our liking (I dont know if that’s how it is made). The house brewed honey wine reminded me of my Mom’s homemade wine. On the whole it was a wonderful experience.

Google
Wow what an experience. Food tasted amazingly good. Service is top notch. They recommended correct quantity of food for the group. Beef, chicken and lamp dishes were cooked perfect and tasted superb. Had a wonderful experience.

Food has been absolutely delicious every time we've visited. Great prices and portions. Fassil combination is a great option for sampling lots of different tasty dishes 😋

Google
The hole in the wall family owned 3star atmosphere makes this place even more 5 star. Owner will tell you what to eat and scold you if you don’t eat it. We go because of him and his shaving food. By far the best Ethiopian place in the city.

Google
Ethiopian cuisine is so wholesome. The doro tib is chicken breast curry served over a lentil, millet based crepe (injara). It’s so rich with flavour. And being a lover of Indian breads and curries, this dish gives me the satisfaction of something similar but yet entirely different. 110% recommend trying this cuisine out. It’s super fun in a a large group - ask for the option of being served communal style in one large dish! Love the experience.

I was here with one friend for three times in the past year because it’s so so so far away from where I live, but the food is absolutely to die for. The lamb and veggie mix are amazing, I can’t stress how much. The food portion is very filling, as two female young adults we can barely finish the two dishes we order even when we came hungry. The price is SO reasonable given how much food is provided and I honestly hope the entirety of Vancouver can be this affordable. The owners are also really nice people. I will definitely visit again when I have an entire day off and someone to go with.

Was a small unassuming resto along east broadway. The signage outside was almost less than modest. But the first few seconds upon entering proved the modest signage very wrong! Had a homey very clean ambience, cozy with very personal and wonderful service! The owner/chef and her daughter would even come out and speak to customers ! Had a surprisingly very diverse group of lovely customers !!! Last but not least, the food was phenomenal, I felt like coming back the next day! Flavours were not strong and just enough flavour to appreciate the true beauty of Ethiopian flavours ! The “ bread “ was very unique and delicious made of only the finest. The entrees were just truly tasty ! Prices were very reasonable. I would describe how the actual ‘eating’ happens but I would not do justice to how truly a wonderful experience it was ! Must go !!!

Google
We had an amazing experience at Fassil’s. The food was delicious and the service was outstanding. Our server was extremely helpful in guiding us through the menu and helping us make great choices. Dining here was not only tasty but also a lot of fun. Overall, a fantastic experience!

Yelp
I have never tried Ethiopian food prior to coming here so I was excited! This experience was very enriching and I ate the entire meal with my left hand (as instructed by the man who served us). He was really welcoming and talked to us about the different dishes so we knew what we were having. I absolutely loved the injera. The texture was so soft, spongey, and the flavour was light and slightly like sourdough. It paired really well with the dishes. My friend and I got fassil's combination because we wanted to try a bit of everything and I really enjoyed the slow cooked beef that it came with. The other dishes were good too, but I was not familiar with the taste. We made sure to finish everything and we were so full by the end of our meal so the portion is definitely enough for two people. If you haven't tried Ethiopian food before, you should definitely try some here!

Yelp
Ambiance, cute little hole in the wall restaurant. Service, very kind. Food, amazing. Granted I've been once, but we ordered the combo platter and every single thing on that plate was a 10/10. The food was so flavorful. The combo platter states it feeds two, and it was definitely enough for me and my buddy, maybe even just a bit more than we could eat as we didn't finish everything off completely. The restaurant was clean and welcoming and again the service was kind and prompt. I would recommend this restaurant completely and would definitely come back when I'm visiting again. Prices were also very reasonable. About 15 dollars per person, we were happily stuffed for a good price.

Yelp
Fassil Ethiopian Restaurant serves up delicious Ethiopian food along with a good dose of warmth and hospitality as well. It seemed to be a one man show as there was only one man who greeted us, took our orders and served us our food. He was ever so friendly and as half the people in our party were completely unfamiliar with Ethiopian cuisine, he saw to it that they were served the best options available for sampling a good variety of flavours. Veggie Combo Siga Keye Wot Yebeg Tibs Doro Tibs For anyone who's never had Ethiopian food, they serve the food on top of a soft flatbread, similar to a pancake in texture. This bread is called Injera and has a bit of a sour flavor to it. Extra rolls of Injera are given, and you're meant to use the Injera as a serving utensil by ripping off pieces of it and then using it to scoop up your food and eat it. Everything tastes so good with the Injera, and once you've finished the extra rolls of Injera you get to eat the large piece of Injera that's been soaking up all the wonderful flavors of all the various toppings that have been sitting on top of it! It's very messy finger food so you should definitely make sure to have clean hands before indulging in this type of cuisine! Bonus points for having air conditioning as we've been to other Ethiopian restaurants that did not have air conditioning during summer! Service: Excellent Parking: Free parking on the side street Location: 736 E Broadway, Vancouver, BC

Yelp
Fassil is great - there is not much on Broadway in the eastern half of Mount Pleasant, but we hope Fassil gets the attention and business it deserves. They were empty when we went today (a Monday) for lunch, but that meant we got the full attention of the owner/chef/server. He recommended the Fasil Combination, let us know what was spicy and not spicy, and even though Lamb is not an option for the combo, he cooked it for us anyway.

Shazia N.

Yelp
The food is always amazing! So tasty and flavourful. I usually get the veg combo with beef. The service is also great, the owner/chef is friendly and will recommend what you should try if it's your first time there. It has a homey feeling, great for a rainy/cold day. Also very reasonably priced!

Yelp
Decided to give Fassil Ethiopian Restaurant a try. They're located next door to Nha Trang Restaurant. We dropped in for a Friday lunch (12:30pm). Only one worker, who was jugging all the serving and cooking duties. Menu is short and sweet with 5 vegetarian, 8 meat (beef, chicken, fish and lamb) and two combination dishes. Most dishes are $12.00 to $18.00. - Injera - stingy with the injera, R had to go up to ask for more. Injera had no character/liveliness to it; lacked the typical sour, fermented note. - Fasil's combination ($30.00) - veggie combo and we opted for the siga keye wot. The scoops of vegetables were small. Our favourites was the chickpea puree (first time eating this) and boiled split lentils (nice kick from the berbere powder). The slow cooked beef was decent. FER was okay but not inspired to come back. There are better Ethiopian spots in town.

Sangeetha M.

Yelp
It was my first time trying Ethiopian food. I didn't really know what to expect. So I asked a little bit about the menu and they explained what to expect and what people typically order. There were three of us, and initially I misunderstood that each of us should get a veggie combo and add the meat to share. But it's actually a lot of food so we got 1 veggie combo, 1 meat, 1 fish and shared everything. This was more than enough for 3 hungry people. I knew injera would be sour but I didn't realize how sour it would be! It was also more filling than I expected. It went really well with the spice of the lamb. Of all the veggies my favourite was the chickpeas. Next time I would get just the chickpea and some lamb or try another meat. Spinach was very bland and I think it was the lentils that was a little too spicy for me. The fish was just plain fish fried without much flavoring, I wouldn't get that again. Definitely a place to come to with a few people to share everything with rather than eating individually. Definitely coming back here!

Yelp
Amazing veggie Ethiopian food. It's a small place, but clean. The manager is super friendly. Their veggie set is awesome. Love love the injera bread!! Each with your hands, have a glass of wine and enjoy!

Ellie L.

Yelp
The food is so awesome. Best meal I've had in Vancouver!!! And the chef was such a chiller. He gave us fire recommendations and you can tell the food is made with love

Min A.

Yelp
Authentic, home made, and has been around for 30 years. You can't ask for more when trying a restaurant by seeing a large table of local Ethiopians and the restaurant engaging with them as they must be regulars. We ordered Asa Tibs (fried basa) and Misr Wot (spicy lentils) which were served with Injera. Both delicious and would certainly recommend checking them out, as it's legitimate to Ethiopian cuisine.

Jay K.

Yelp
Loved their veggie combo and the ambiance. The owners are warm and friendly. Their injera is the mildest and most delicious I've had in Vancouver. Will be back for sure!

Hayley R.

Yelp
This is a very cute little Ethiopian restaurant in Mount Pleasant, owned and operated by an Ethiopian family. Each dish is served with their barley and teff sourdough flatbread which is spongy, tangy, and delicious. My partner and I got the chicken tibs and the lamb tibs. We didn't get the stew dishes because they are all made with canola oil, but the meat dishes are made with clarified butter (BIG WIN)! Overall, the texture of the meat was okay, but the flavour profile made up for it. I tasted flavours that I have never tasted before, which is awesome!!! The only issue was that the food needed something else to balance it out. The flavours were all very 'heavy,' and there were no veggies or crème fraiche pairings to provide respite from the heaviness of the meat and grain. Overall, I'd eat this again simply because the food is so unique and authentic. However, I would order it to go and eat it with tatziki or a fresh cabbage salad at home. Don't be afraid to try Fassil if you've never had Ethiopian food! The authentic flavours and the smiling chef behind the counter do not disappoint.

Matt B.

Yelp
Since Fassil was the first Ethiopian place I'd tried, I decided to revisit it to see what I thought after having tried so many more places. I ordered the vegetarian platter (~$12 plus tax), which was ready for pick-up 15 minutes later. The platter comes with 5 dishes, many of which were on the watery side and sour side. I wasn't too impressed with any of the items. You got a lot of injera with it, which is intensely sour--borderline unpalatable after a while. I was full after my meal, but I really didn't think this place's food holds its weight. 2.5/5 All in all, pretty disappointing, especially considering the many good Ethiopian places nearby in East Van. Go to Axum instead.

Guerric H.

Yelp
I love Ethiopian food - injera is such a fantastic base, fun to use and deliciously fermented and with an amazing spongy texture that soaks up all the flavour. Fassil really focuses on the injera platter experience. As far as I can tell, everything on the menu is meant to be served on a plate of injera, so be aware of that going in. The vegetarian options are delicious - my favourite is the shiro wot, a delicious creamy chickpea stew, but the lentil misir wot and the split pea kik wok are excellent as well. I highly recommend one veggie combo per two people, to provide you with a ton of flavour variety. If you combine a veggie combo with a meat option, you'll get a larger portion of the meat and it'll be the star of your platter, so I recommend that approach! The default combo that includes meat will get you a basic chicken or beef stew, but I recommend branching out too, since it's not much more expensive. I most recently tried the yebeg tibs - a lamb stew - and it was incredibly delicious. The spice levels are mild, too - we were offered a choice of not spicy, mild, and spicy for the lamb, and took the spiciest option. Even so it wasn't nearly as spicy as Southeast Asian or Korean dishes can get, so don't be afraid to go for the spiciest option! It really makes for a lovely, aromatic, warming dish. At the end of the meal, I left with a full belly and yet also a deep longing for even more injera and deliciously spiced stews and curries. I can't recommend it enough!

Michael G.

Yelp
Not totally sure about this place. Nice hospitality and friendly service, but only one person worked the entire restaurant. I wasn't so impressed to watch several plates of food cooked in a microwave oven. That is not how great Ethiopian food is made. The menu is limited, seemingly without appetizers, and the $1.80 surcharge to use a credit card to pay wasn't very appreciated. On the other hand, the overall hospitality was warm, but injera was cold, and some dishes were hot and others were disappointing being only luke warm. I did like the chicken dish with a nice spicy taste, made with good quality white meat chicken breast. That was the best thing served .

Andrea R.

Yelp
This was my first time trying Ethiopian food and it was amazing. We got Fasil's combination that had the veggie combo and the option of siga keye wot or doro tibs (we went with the beef option). The meal was very filling with the injera - I saw a couple reviews saying the injera was too sour but I didn't feel that way at all. 100% recommend!

Luke Y.

Yelp
Quality/price (4/4): I've been here lots of times and it's never disappointed me. I usually order Fassil's combo (chicken/beef + veggie combo), which has a nice variety of great-tasting items at a decent price. Service (1/1): Service is generally good, except when it's really crowded. That doesn't happen on most nights though. Would I go there again: YES

Caleigh C.

Yelp
This was my first experience with Ethiopian food, so I don't have much to compare it to, but I recommend it! The chef asked how spicy we wanted the food to be, which I really appreciated as someone with a lower tolerance for spice. It was a really fun meal, both the sensory experience of eating using the injera and the new (to me) flavour combinations. There was a lot of variety to the different vegetarian dishes. The value was also good, with a very filling meal for two costing about $30. I will definitely return!

Gabriela R.

Yelp
Just okay. The restaurant Axum's shiro is MUCH better and tastes more authentic. Fassil is pretty stingy with their injera so be sure to ask for extra if you're ordering to-go.

Gabriela F.

Yelp
The food is really tasty and filling! When our food arrived, I thought It wouldn't be enough, but the Injera bread is really filling. We ordered the veggie combo, and the collard greens and yellow split peas were divine! The red lentils were a little bit spicy for me, but If you're used to spicy food you should be fine. $21 for 2 people is pretty good!

Nami A.

Yelp
What can I say... bold flavours, amazing and friendly service and a cozy interior! Dropped by here when it was cold and cloudy and was so impressed with the service and the quality of the food. I absolutely adore Ethiopian cuisine and this little restaurant did NOT disappoint. I was fearful that most small restaurants would take a big hit during the pandemic and Fassil had been on my list for quite some time, so it was such a relief to see them busy and operating successfully. Thanks for the amazing memories, Fassil! will be back soon.

Lucy N.

Yelp
Friend and I were in town and found this place by doing a simple search and boy were we glad. The parking is mainly street parking, but it wasn't too hard to find and then navigate to the restaurant. The atmosphere of the place was very welcoming. The service was fast and the waitress was very sweet and friendly, also very accommodating by asking if there were any dietary restrictions that we may have!!!! I had the Yebeg Tibs, and it was amazing the level of spicy was just perfect. The portion sizes for each plate was, what I would consider, the perfect portion for a single person. We were able to clean our plate completely. I would highly recommend dropping by this place when you are nearby, or even going out of your way to drive there are try it. Worth the while!

Lindsay K.

Yelp
Had takeout from here the other day and it was great! Had the vegetarian platter which was a decent-sized portion, 5 different dishes and 2 large pieces of injera. My favourite was the split pea dish. Will definitely have this again!

Amalee T.

Yelp
It was my first time trying Ethiopian food, but I went with friends who had been there multiple times before (enough times that the owner recognized them and came over to say hi). The staff was very welcoming and kind and food was very tasty! Beware that service is pretty slow, but it gave us plenty of time to catch up so we didn't mind. Some info for first timers: all the food is shared (we ordered the veggie platter plus three meat dishes and we probably could've eaten more) and you eat with your hands, using the wraps provided to gather up the food. The wraps are pretty filling but they also give a very generous amount!

Lauren B.

Yelp
Ethiopian food is the most beautiful, healthy, delicious, and culturally rich food I've ever known. I thank those from Ethiopia who share so graciously their food and their heritage with others. Fassil has the best injera I've ever had, the flavors and textures were perfect and should be celebrated. The vegan menu items are all I ever want to eat for the rest of my life.... The warm and welcoming people who run this restaurant were happy to share and speak about their heritage and mission to preserve and provide traditional food, as they believe it should be. I'm so thankful I was able to enjoy all the love and history Fassil is serving to their community.

M. Y.

Yelp
I think everything on the menu here is served on injera, which works great for me because it's the reason I came! Injera is delicious, soft, spongy, sour, fermented bread that goes well with the rich stews offered here, a perfect blend of sour and savoury. We shared a lamb dish and the vegetarian combo and it came on the same large injera sheet. The injera and the lamb were very good though I think I've had better of the vegetarian stews, though much of that is just personal preference. I always think the portions are small until I start eating--you get full easily on injera. The restaurant is small but seemed to attract a group of regulars. The menu is small; there are few drink choices and no dessert. The service was good, friendly but not overly so. As with other Ethiopian restaurants I've been to, they usually ask you if you've had Ethiopian food before, probably to alert you ahead of time that you will be eating with your hands. It can get pretty messy towards the end, eating the stew soaked injera that falls apart easily when handled.

Melanie K.

Yelp
First time tried Ethiopian food :) Friendly service, taste was very unique, clean and comfort food to me. Coming back for sure

Joshua L.

Yelp
My fiancee's sister has been coming to this restaurant for several years now and we finally had a chance to try it. Her family absolutely loves Ethiopian food and rightfully so, with the amount of different flavors are in every dish. We had a pretty large order including 3 Lamb tibs and 2 vegetable platters. Unfortunately we had it to go, so the lamb tibs were separated from the injera. This meant I could not have my favorite part which is the injera at the bottom. Everything was amazing from the injera to each side of the vegetable platter. I've only had Ethiopian food at another restaurant in Seattle, and in comparison I found that there were less sides? But what they lacked in quantity they surely made up for in quality.

Erin A.

Yelp
The food is Amazing, unfortunately when I worked there, the owner/cook would not stop trying to grope my ass and kiss me. He has a history of sexually harassing his waitresses (the one before me as well), so if your server seems distracted, please don't blame them, it is incredibly distracting trying to remember people's orders while also dodging the cook's hands every time you go to the back.

Xiaojie Josphine Z.

Yelp
Delicious! Fast service and super nice staff. Good price too. Will definitely come back.

Nachiket P.

Yelp
So far the best Ethiopian food I've had in Vancity. Family-run hole in the wall establishment. Service is slow. But again its not a fast food place. Everything is made fresh. About the food, Its served on one big plate and you share. Another thing, no cutlery here. You need fingers to eat this food (So no food for you Jaime Lannister). The meat and the veggies are spread on a soft Ethiopian bread (Ingera). We had : Doro Tibs (chicken breasts) Asa Tibs (Fish) Key Wot (beef stew) Derek Tibs (lamb) Fassil's Vegetarian Combo All the dishes were really good and it was more than enough for 5 of us. We ended up paying 15 bucks each (plus tip). The lady owner is a one man (woman) army. She takes the orders, cooks and serves. Very friendly too. Food : Great Service :Friendly Ambiance : All in all it's just another hole in the wall Worth the price : Yes

Emilie C.

Yelp
Love this place! Come right when you start to feel a bit hungry. Just don't come starving and you'll have a good time, cause the food takes a while to get to the table, but when it does... It's sooo worth the wait! Everything here is great! You can't go wrong.

Chelsea L.

Yelp
This is my go-to for healthy, delicious dinner to-go. I've literally ordered it 15+ times in the past 2 months! The vegetarian combo is a solid, well rounded meal. You won't be disappointed!

Rebecca K.

Yelp
Walking in at 6pm on a Friday night, we thought it would be busy, as from the outside it looks like a small place. Lucky for us (though somewhat surprising), we had our pick of all the tables! The lady who brought us our menus was quiet, but very sweet. She didn't explain exactly how the cuisine or dinner was supposed to work, but from reading other Yelp reviews we luckily were able to make informed ordering choices. First time having Ethiopian food, and I'm definitely a fan! Super flavourful, and filling. The two of us shared the Fasil's combination - and we were so stuffed that we couldn't even finish it! You use your hands to scoop the injera (traditionally gluten-free!) to pick up the meat and sides. Unless you have a high tolerance for spice, respond that you'd like mild spice. We said a little spicy, and it while the curry was delicious..our mouths were on fire. That being said, we couldn't stop eating. The corn and cabbage-like sides definitely helped to balance out the heat. The chicken portion we received was generous, and while the Fasil's combination is recommended for 2, the dish could more than accommodate a third person sharing as well. Definitely will be having Ethiopian food again, and would be open to returning to Fassil's. May have to bring a few more people to share with so we can try more delicious dishes! Bonus is that it's location is conveniently located along the Broadway 99 route, near the Fraser St stop. Also nearby some good ice cream places, just in case you have room for desert!

Vivian C.

Yelp
This has been my favourite Ethiopian Restaurant in Vancouver for a number of reasons 1. The Indra ( sourdough crepe) is light and not too sour/ strong in taste that it does not overpower the food 2. The food - we had the veggie combo, chicken and lamb . Packed with flavour and spices . Normally I am not a fan of lentils but the way Fassil makes them I am a fan . 3. The service is courtesy but remember to go pay at the counter . This is a small restaurant with 2 people serving For $12- 16 this is really an incredible meal and experience !

Viviann L.

Yelp
Had a great dinner last night, I introduced my mom and girlfriend to some Ethiopian food and they loved it. Their Injera is a bit different from the ones I've had in NYC but they are still good. Their dishes are great and super flavour but not overpowering. The owner is friendly and it's a small restaurant and chill. Restrooms are clean and it's not hard to find the place. Some street parkings around the blocks. They have wine, beer, and pop but I prefer the beer or water. Their water is clean and it doesn't have a weird tap water taste. A couple fruit flies but pretty normal for the summer and it's been pretty hot lately. Not sure if the AC is usually off but just because of the covid19 regulations. If the AC is on it would have been perfect but everything is a bit different since the pandemic so it's understandable. It's not the best Ethiopian food I've had but it's pretty great tbh. It's a place I'd come back to and a place I'd recommend.

Edward L.

Yelp
Fraser and Broadway normally isn't known for dining, but it turns out there's a nice charming hole in the wall here called Fassil. Parking is available in the evenings. Excellent. The place is a mom + pop + daughter operation, and they are the real deal. I heard them talking in their local dialect. Also there was another table with Ethopians sitting there, also speaking the same language. That passes my authenticity check. The dad was the waiter, and he was very friendly and helpful. As we had no idea what to order, he gave us some suggestions, and told us what he wouldn't recommend as well. Honest opinions are always appreciated. The food consisted of various "piles" of meats and vegetables such as beef, and chickpeas. You also get injera (the traditional Ethopian pancake-looking flatbread) that looks like a thin piece of foam. The traditional way of eating this is with your hands, where you rip off a piece of injera, wipe up some of the piles, and stuff it in your mouth. Pretty cool for sure. Be sure to not wash your hands beforehand, for the full authentic experience. We used up the injera a bit too quickly, but fortunately there were plenty more rolls where those came from. The pricing was very reasonable, at some $13 a person including beers. This restaurant is definitely not your average joint. I must say I did learn a thing or two. Recommended.

Soren X.

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. We went there in a group of 5. The owner (a very friendly and cheerful guy) came to our table and explained the food and favorites to us. Later in the night, a group of people at the bar were grooving to some African music. My friend joined them, and all of a sudden, everyone there were dancing. It was definitely fun. oh and by the way, food was great too!

Jennie Y.

Yelp
First timer for Ethiopian food here and I was not disappointed. This family-owned place is super chill and incredibly friendly and patient for noobs like me. "The Daughter" took her time to let us browse the menu before explaining a few dishes and how they're eaten to us. We opted for the vegetarian combo with beef. I wanted to try the Kitfo (steak tartar) but they were out of it that particular day (Labour Day Monday). The owner came out to apologize for not having it available and explained that on any normal day they would have it - something to try next time I guess! Our platter came out and she walked us through the recommended method on how to eat it - basically tearing up small portions of the injera bread (recommended to use the platter injera first before using the ones in the basket) and pinching each of the curry-styles. The platter does not look like a lot of food for 2 people at first but you get surprisingly full. We had a lot of the injera left over and couldn't believe how the other tables were able to finish it all. Eat with your hands, utensils are frowned upon here!

Tara N.

Yelp
Delicious flavours!!! Meat was slightly over cooked but we really enjoyed our meal. We tried the veggie combo with lamb and beef stews. Finger licking. Good! The chef came to our table and checked in with everyone to make sure we were enjoying our meal. Service is friendly and even though the restaurant is basic, it's quite cozy. I'd highly recommend this place!

Kayna J.

Yelp
One of my fave neighborhood spots! A cute family-run place with super friendly service, and delicious food that isn't expensive! I usually order the veggie combo, so I haven't tried the meat. But it's tasty and always comes out very quick!

Saud S.

Yelp
Don't bother going here The owner was nice and came over quickly I ordered dishes he recommended and the lamb curry had a DEAD COCKROACH in it ... called the owner and he did not believe me So I said just give me the cheque and that's it ... he did not take the payment the whole experience was gross as hell

Sonali G.

Yelp
Quaint, small restaurant. Owner was very kind and provided recommendations based on food preference and party size. Fast service. Great-tasting food! Chicken and lamb dishes were amazing!

Marje B.

Yelp
I had high expectation for this place but it was just ok. I tried to come to Fassil for lunch almost a year ago, website and hours on the door both said open at 11am for lunch. My friend and I waited and waited and it never opened we were limited for time so we left. Disappointed at the time I took Fassil out of my bookmark. Present date, we were invited to Fassil for dinner, I still haven't tried Ethiopian food so I thought of giving it another chance. We came with a party of 6, when our party arrived we were told that a table for a party of 6 is hard to get, huh ok. I thought this place was good for groups? They ended up seating us in a cozy table, which worked out because we all had to share one big plate. The place is small maybe 10 tables with some bar tops, its a family operated restaurant which I loved, where the father is the cook mother and daughter servers so on. The menu is small, Ive never had Ethiopian food before and neither did my companions so we asked our server to help us out. Well we pretty much told her to order for us. Our faith was in her hands. She ordered us several vegetarian dishes Gomen/spinach, Alicha/cabbage, Misr Wot/lentils, Shrowot/chickpeas and meat dishes were Derek tibs/ lamb, doro wot / chicken, kitfo / beef doro tibs / chicken. And it came with injera bread. When the food came to the table we all thought it wasn't enough for the 6 of us but it was just right. Our food came in a big round platter on top of injera bread. Don't forget to wash your hands! No utensils here. Out of all the dishes I really enjoyed the lamb. The flavor stood out more for me. The rest of the dishes seemed too bland and nothing distinct them from each other, maybe its because it was all in a big plate. The description of the dishes seemed so full of flavor, I guess I was just looking for that. The bread was defiantly filling. It went well with the different dishes, looked like a crepe or pancake with a slight sour taste to it. I thought it was good meal but I thought nothing special I thought the flavors could have stood out more just tasted a little bland to me but great price for all 6 of us it was $75. This is my first time having Ethiopian food so maybe I need to give it another chance. So over all it was ok. The service was good, she helped us with our questions, but we had to wave her down for water and bill. Which I understand she was the only server on a Friday night. The cook also came out and greeted us during our meal which was really nice.

Yelp
Let me say that the food was super tasty, flavourful and delicious. Having said that, the service on my last visit was an all-time low. I am used to slow service in this restaurant and I know to expect that when I go. However, on the last visit, we waited about 10 minutes for our menus, and then 60 minutes for our food. There were two people working in the entire restaurant so when they were both in the kitchen, there was no table service for at least 30 minutes. I know I'm going to return because I really like the food. However, I think people need to know before going that you're likely going to wait a long time and get spotty service while you're there.

Yelp
Best Ethiopian food I've had in a really long time! So good, we took an order to go AFTER our meal at the restaurant so we could eat it the next day. Get the combo with beef tibs (beef stew). You won't be disappointed. And the owners are so very kind and friendly.

Yelp
We ordered Combo veggie, it was so good. The portions are good and the size of the other dishes was very good. It was our first time to tried ethiopian food and we loved it. We are sure thar we will go back again soon.

Yelp
I probably shouldn't be writing at this moment because I may be in a snarky mood after reading Brent B's review from a few months ago. It came across to me as downright racist so I just mostly wanted to comment. First let me point out that there really isn't any such thing as "African food" because Africa is a continent made up of over 60 different nations. That's right, different nations and customs and cultures so you can't make a judgment that Fassil isn't "African" enough. I'm not sure visiting Kenya allows you to judge another country's food based on that visit. Anyways, just wanted to get that off my chest first. I visited Fassil on the night of the blackout a few weeks ago and so it was completely dark but we dined by candle light! it was a full restaurant nonetheless and so the service was slow and I think the cook was cooking by flame (I could be wrong) so the food was slow too but that's to be expected. I enjoyed my meal- veggie platter shared with a few others. Can't complain, it was on par with other Ethiopian restaurants i've been to. Because it was dark I cannot really comment on the ambiance. I don't really have anything negative to say about my experience, but like another yelper mentioned, I will try a few other places before I am back.

Yelp
Love the food! Everything tasted amazing and the service was great! The vegetarian dishes were to die for and the meat dish was tender and well seasoned.
