Fat Hippo Durham

The burgers here are fantastic. If you have a hard time choosing between the Fat Hippo Burger and the Born Slippy Burger, you will absolutely not go wrong with either. One of our group said they had the best chicken fingers of her life. Just be sure to ask for extra napkins. The loaded waffle fries are a treat but the purple slaw gets a meh.

Nice restaurant, we were seated upstairs, plenty of comfortable seating and spacious. Service was good, food came out hot and fresh. The 3 burger meals we ordered were delicious! £58 for the 3 of us including soft drinks. We felt the quality was very good and overall was good value for money.

I’ve been to Fat Hippo Durham a few times but this is the first time I’m reviewing it. I came with a friend and decided to go for their Christmas burger, the Hans-Gruber-ger which I picked fries and had a Mars Attacks milkshake. Every time I’ve been, the food is decent but this was the best burger I’ve had from the visits I’ve had in the past. It tasted and felt like Christmas in a weird way and I enjoyed it very much. The place gets busy quick so it’s best to making a booking. I have noticed it can get loud and tables are quite cramped so conversations aren’t quite private. The service is a little slow, specially when busy.

Popped in here for some food today, they served a wide range of burgers. I tried the southern fried crispy chicken burger either ranch and bbq. The burger was decent, although I would considering it a little big pricey for a burger at around 16 pound. My partner got the smaller beef burger and added on bacon her burger was half the price of mine and was near enough the same size and served with the same amount of chips. So probably better value to go on the smaller menu. The chips were standard fries nothing special with a bit of seasoning on. The staff were friendly enough. Not bad for a quick bite however like I said a little pricey, although not sure on standard pricing around Durham.

Great restaurant with a reasonable lunchtime offer on when we visited! One of the best burgers I’ve ever tasted. Waffle fries were just the right amount of crispy. Would definitely return when we’re back in Durham!

Great food, the service was quick to take our drink and food order but the food took a tiny bit longer than expected. However it was more than worth the wait it was great best burger I’ve had in a long time. Would recommend the half parmo chicken burger and the chicken tender fingers

Fat Hippo is a great place for burgers. If you are into spicy food, the Wild Bill is the way to go. For me one of the best burgers I ever had. Waffle fries were great as well. Special thanks to our waitress Ocean. She really made sure everything was perfect.

Very disappointed after being recommended this place from family, I found that the chicken burger I ordered was mostly batter and the buns dried out the burger as a whole. The fries I upgraded to "loaded" had a tiny amount of cheese sauce of particles of bacon bits plopped onto them. You are also given the option between chips and fries, which seems pointless since there is barely a perceivable difference. My partner was given the wrong vegan burger and told by the staff it was the right one (it wasn't, completely different ingredients were on the burger based on what she chose) We didn't end up finishing our food and left earlier than we expected.

These were some damn good burgers. I mean, let's face facts -- this is north England, not exactly known for their exceptional burger game. All of England, really. But this place hits like your standard American burger pub. Big, greasy, with a ton of burger variety as well as a variety of MILKSHAKES - boozy or NA.

A Jekyll and Hyde sandwich joint! Fat hippo is reportedly a well liked place. It has great ambiance, and a wild, yet inventive, menu of opportunities. But we just did not walk away loving their burgers and other fried options, save the chicken. Their fried chicken ranks high in my (southern US based) opinion! As for the burgers, they were soggy, over cooked, and drenched in dressing and other goop. They lacked balance and in the end were a muddled mess. The refried tatter tots showed potential, but were also muddled. Still, we'd come back again for the chicken!

I was so happy see the Fat Hippo turn up in Durham, a town with a dearth of decent restaurants, and left feeling so disappointed. For a place that is basically a "burger and fries" joint, it does both surprisingly poorly. The American burger was overcooked, and the taste of the (very good meat) was overpowered by the kind of cut-rate American mustard you get on cheap hot dogs in the States. The worst offenders were the chips. Chips need to be crunchy and substantial. These were soggy, undercooked, and flaccid. The server did bring some more chips when we pointed this out. But lo and behold, they were soggy and undercooked too! The servers are very nice, but we left with a bad taste in our mouth.
