Post-Olympics, Japan’s New Hotels Will Be Worth Traveling For

"You are going to want to book into the new Fauchon Kyoto not just for its French influence (yes, it is “Fauchon” of French patisserie fame) but because, in a city dripping with exceptional hotels including the Ace and the Aman, Fauchon somehow bagged the best location in town. The 70 rooms overlook the Kamo River and are within strolling distance to the historic Matsubara bridge and Shijo Kawaramachi shopping district, not to mention the 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines dotted all over town. At this second boutique hotel by the Parisian brand, magenta-colored furniture are accented with golden sakura petals to celebrate its Japanese location. Rooms are decorated with washi paper and the hotel offers traditional tea ceremonies as well as Fauchon French goodies like millefeuille pastries by local bakery, Izutsu."

So totally transformed our experience of Kyoto! We came here at the last minute after a very rude staff interaction at another Kyoto hotel, and it was like night turning to day. Momoka at the Fauchon came running out to meet our taxi and we were escorted to a checkin table where we sat and were offered tea and snacks while they swiftly checked us in (early—at noon). Through an American Express Travel deal we received a free upgrade to a suite as well as $100 food and beverage credit, as well as free breakfast at the splendid top floor restaurant overlooking the river and mountains. ||The breakfast was top quality with a perfect French omelette made to order, fresh basket of pastries, sustainable eggs and local yogurt, fresh squeezed juices, small fruit salad, and a light salad with yuzu dressing. Dinner overlooking the river and mountains was also top quality, both a La carte and prix fixe options available.||The suite was fabulous with a well stocked series of treats (complimentary), a huge stone onsen tub, views of the mountains and plenty of room including a walk in closet stocked with pajamas, slippers, and bathrobes. ||After the stress of the prior hotel experience I took a massage downstairs and had a relaxing treatment, dozing off in the private room with a friendly and communicative masseuse. When we ventured out we were right in the heart of old town Kyoto with many traditional stores, museums, geisha district and riverside stroll. ||There is a wonderful Fauchon store downstairs which like its Paris parent has artisan pastries, light sandwiches, brand goods and packaged foods. Fauchon of course is a centuries old French bakery and foods provider with a brand just recently expanded to Japan (the hotel is about 4 years old and the new, stylish furnishings were top notch).||The manager of guest relations, Daigetsu, went out of his way to research artisan shops for certain crafts which were unique to Kyoto, even to the point of researching options after I had left for the day (without my asking him) and providing them to me when I returned to the hotel. He and the other staff speak fluent English and were uniformly helpful and friendly, even coming out to the curb after calling our taxi to bid us farewell.||All in, from the staff behavior to the plush new furnishings, many complimentary amenities, central location and top notch Brand, we were utterly pleased with Hotel Fauchon. As extensive world travelers, my wife and I would rank this hotel in the highest tier…and yet it is priced well below where its peers are. We enthusiastically recommend this hotel to the point of it being a magnet for us to return to Kyoto again.

A great hotel with outstanding staff who were always very helpful and forever smiling. Sean who manages the hotel and many other hotels was outstanding and extremely helpful each and every day of our stay. Along with him Daisuke san was at the concierge desk and suggested so many good places to eat with vegetarian choices. They went out of their way to help build our itinerary, make suggestions, help book a Toyota Car Rental. The hotel is well located and just a 5 min walk from Kyoto downtown which is lively and charming. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. The only shortcoming of the hotel was their very limited breakfast menu even though they had options for people who stayed longer with them but a good buffet breakfast is always a great start to the day and that seemed missing.

My wife and I booked the Classic Room for 3 nights in April 2025. We thought this was one of the best hotels we stayed at during our trip. From the moment you enter the hotel, you are welcomed by the hotel staff. You leave your bags with them and you walk up to a separate reception area where you are seated and offered tea and macarons. Check in is conducted while you sip your tea. After you get your keys, you go up to your room and your luggage bags are already there. We were very impressed by the reception. The room itself is fairly sizeable and offers a cabinet of Fauchon snacks. We had a good view of the alley behind the hotel that was lined with Sakura trees. We could also see the mountains in the distance. The location of the hotel is also great. It is located about a 5-10 minutes walk from downtown Kyoto and about a 5 minutes walk to Kiyomizu-gojo station. We also had breakfast which included a free flow selection of bread and pastries like French croissant, baguette and brioche. You also get a fruit plate, salad, and omelette. If you stay for more than 1 night, you also get a premium breakfast menu for your 2nd night onwards. We will definitely return to this hotel the next time we are in Kyoto.

From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed and offered a refreshing welcome drink. I had messaged the hotel a few weeks prior about a request and they remembered which was very personalized.||The hotel is in a good location in Koto, just near the river and a short walk to most of the major attractions. There are many restaurants in the area to choose from. ||The first night my wife and I ate dinner in the restaurant, the quality of the food was sensational, however the main meal was more like a starter, desert as also magnificent. There is a bar on the 10th floor that served the best house champagne.||Breakfast is order from the menu which is elegantly presented and the salad, fruit and yogurt were delicious. The coffee was also quite good, you could order what you wanted, there was also|a selection of bread and croissants.||The rooms a large and well-appointed with lots of amenities. The bar/fridge was stocked with lots of sweets to take home or eat in your room. We had a king size bed; however, it was just 2 single beds pushed together which was ok, but the sleep quality was excellent.||The bathroom is large enough and has a shower room with a bath. The toilets in Japan are fantastic, fully automatic. There is also a coffee maker with Nespresso pods in your room.||We had a room on the road side which was a little nosy, so I would recommend asking for a room on the river side which may have a better view.||Overall, it’s a newish hotel, the staff are very welcoming and extremely friendly and helpful.

From the moment we arrived until departure, every aspect of Fauchon Hotel Kyoto was outstanding. The à la carte breakfast was absolutely beautiful, with each dish crafted to perfection. The staff were incredibly friendly and professional, ensuring a warm welcome. Our room was beautifully appointed, with a very comfortable bed and fabulous bedding. The bar and high tea experiences were excellent, offering a delightful blend of French and Japanese flavors. The exquisite bathroom products added a luxurious touch to our stay. Highly recommended for its exceptional service and ambiance.

Amazing stay. Loved the warm greeting, attention to detail and fantastic spa. Staff was incredibly helpful and went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed, from handing us an umbrella (because we stepped outside the lobby to check the weather) to hailing a taxi and ensure they had the correct destination address. Will definitely return here!!!

The Fauchon hotel Kyoto lives up to the Fauchon name. It blends Japanese and western elements well! The staff was very friendly, and were very accommodating since I speak very little Japanese. My room was upgraded for free, and the new room was amazing! It had an oversized king size bed and a Japanese style bathtub. My only regret is not staying longer. If afforded the opportunity, treat yourself and stay here while in Kyoto, you will not regret it!

This hotel is unique and exceptional. Every aspect has been amazing for our family. We booked 2 rooms as we are traveling with our teenage daughters. The rooms are spacious, beautifully appointed, and the bathroom is luxurious. The girls and I have enjoyed baths each night, with included face masks and sweet treats to spoil us. The whole family has loved the breakfast. My girls have whispered across the table “this is so fancy!” with big smiles on their faces. Everything has been delicious and so beautifully presented. From our welcome tea and warm reception by the staff to climbing into bed each night, we feel pampered and cared for. The bus stop outside makes it easy to get to Kyoto Station, and it’s a short walk to so many sights. We loved Nishiki Market for shopping and snacking and 2Eme the little French bistro down the street. We even discovered an amazing craft/drawing shop where my budding artists found supplies to take home. If you are trying to decide where to stay and want a special spot this is your sign! Stay at Fauchon and enjoy a retreat in the heart of the city. ❤️
