How to Take an Unforgettable Winter Trip to Iceland — Northern Lights, Gorgeous Inns, and Frozen Waterfalls Included

"Near the retreat property I visited the ice-blue, frozen expanse of Faxi Falls and followed that with a simple lunch at a nearby tomato greenhouse—thick soup with chunks of bread—that underscored how elemental and comforting the food can be after cold outdoor exploration." - Marcia DeSanctis Marcia DeSanctis Marcia DeSanctis is the New York Times best-selling author of “100 Places in France Every Woman Should Go,” and the 2022 memoir-in-essays, “A Hard Place to Leave: Stories from a Restless Life.” She has reported from India, Rwanda, Brazil, and elsewhere for Travel + Leisure. I wasn't expecting anything, just passing by (and the parking wasn't cheap), but it was surprisingly nice and sunny, which added a bit of a different view. Highly recommended, great!

Quick stop right on the side of the road in the Golden Circle that leads to a beautiful waterfall. If you keep going past the boardwalk, you can get right up next to the falls by crossing the salmon ladder. Easy and accessible hike that is a little lesser known. You will have to pay for parking, but it is really cheap.

A perfect stop off if you are visiting the secret lagoon. As with all the attractions now, parking is compulsory and expensive. Over the years Iceland have definitely learnt to capitalise on the tourist market, which is a shame.

A very large and wide set of falls that is easy to access. The parking costs $ but provides you with a well paved parking lot and easy path down to get up close to this large set of falls. Was a fun and quick visit.

The Faxi waterfall is located on Rt 35 and is part of the Golden Circle. There is a good sized carpark (900kr per regular vehicle) and free toilets. There is a cafe as well but it wasn't open at the time we visited. From the carpark, there is a short walk down to the river where you find a beautiful, wide cascading waterfall. We visited when the lupines were in bloom, contributing to beautiful pictures you can take here. Well worth the 15 minute stop to view the falls here if you are spending a couple of days taking in natural sights along the Golden Circle.

Faxafoss is a beautiful, broad waterfall that’s easy to reach and not too crowded. The water has a really nice blue color, and you can get fairly close for some great photos. There’s a small parking lot with a modest fee, and it’s a quick walk from there to the falls. Definitely a nice, peaceful stop along the Golden Circle.

Lovely waterfall next to a campsite. We arrived just as the parking closed and paid to get in. Little did we know that 5 minutes later it would've been for free 😂..

Even in winter beautiful. Staff was great. Beware ice in winter.
