Lisbon Was Just Named the Best Culinary City Destination in Europe — Here Are Must-eat Places, According to a Local

"Just down the street, you'll find another traditional favorite, Faz Frio. Its sauteed shrimp will have you ordering thirds and fourths, while its tempura green beans will have you fighting over the last one." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. Get here early to get a table. You can’t reserve. We had an early dinner at around 6pm and was able to sit down right away. Just half and hour later there was a queue to get in. Several of the starters and the sides are veggie friendly. I’m vegetarian and mixed three dishes for my meal. My partner had the loin beef steak.

Went to Faz Frio not once but twice on our 3-4day trip because it was just that good. Huge thanks to our server Leo, who was super attentive and great with recommendations, always checking in while running by to see if he could refill a glass or recommend another dish and made dinner a wonderful experience both nights - part of why we went back was because we didn’t get to the rest of his suggestions the first time and he greeted us like a friend. The sauce in the sauteed shrimp was amazing (making the dish better than Ponto Final) and we soaked it all up with the bread. The tiger shrimp was also arguably better than the one we had at the famous Cervejaria Ramiro with a giant chunk of roe. Faz Frio was a highlight of Lisbon for sure.

Faz Frio is a wonderful spot for delicious Portuguese cuisine. Everything was incredibly tasty, but the potato and mushroom dish stood out—it was both refined and comforting, like a homemade meal. The prawns came with a rich, bisque-like sauce that was absolutely delicious. The service was attentive yet unobtrusive, making the experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommend!

Google
Such a cool place. As soon as we arrived they got us straight to a table. Service super quick, wine recommendations 10/10. We had a few starters and one main between us which arrives within 20 mins. INCREDIBLY delicious, would highly recommend. Our waiter was so lovely and accommodating. Great atmosphere too. Thanks for having us! Signed, 3 blondes 🙏

We ended up here after a big day at Sintra, they knew almost immediately to bring us a beer and it was possibly the best beer ever. They treated our kids amazingly and they had so much fun chatting with them. The food was incredible, the octopus salad was to die for and the main codfish meal melted in our mouths. The boys especially loved the chocolate mousse.

Main dishes came out 30mins after we’ve had our starters. Sirloin steak was excellent (the chips were great and steak was cooked to perfection) but the cod fish cockles and mussel ?stew was bland. There were no cocktail bar available when we came in. The gambas were also a must order.

Delicious and quaint. All items cooked to perfection. Can’t go wrong with any shrimp dish or steak. Come for lunch and cool down- you’ll leave happy and refreshed. Small inside but so charming. Staff very accommodating and courteous.

We had the tiger shrimps, the sardines and sea bass. Taste was great but portions too small for the price. Seabass was just this piece. And that was more than 10 euros. Also 7 euros for two sardines on some bread and cucumber? For 7 euros I can eat 10 sardines in Greece! I wouldn’t describe it as a value for money place as the seating is not that comfortable and spending around 60 euros is very easy here. Tables are too close to each other and too noisy. They definitely try to make you order more but we got no water and no bread. Then we got the receipt and we had been charged 1 pão. We know for sure this was not a mistake. I know people in the service industry lol. Anyway, they don’t take reservations so it’s easy to find a table. I just believe it’s more of a tavern with restaurant prices. Or it was a local place and they have made it expensive for tourists.Lastly, 5% mandatory tip on the receipt? I’ve never seen that in Portugal and have traveled to many places in the country. It’s obvious it’s an old tavern that has become a tourist trap!

Yelp
This restaurant is super popular and only has a couple tables so be prepared to wait! When you arrive you check in with the hostess in the door then you can wait outside and even order a drink at their bar window. This restaurant only has two tables that are a two top! So if you arrive in a bigger group there is a better chance of you getting seated faster. Ask to sit at the bar if you have a smaller group. We arrived at 8pm, waited an hour and they still didn't have a table open for 2 people so we ended up just sitting at the bar. The steak with fried egg here is a must order! The sauce on this steak tastes like the famous French steak frites restaurant (Le Relais de l'Entrecôte). The truffle mashed potatoes are a hard pass. These were not good at all, no truffle flavor and the texture of the potatoes was very gummy.

Yelp
Probably one of our top 3 meals in Lisbon. We were recommended Faz Frío by our local tour guide and were excited to try it, especially since the area surrounding it is so beautiful (spend time at the park nearby before / after your meal!) We were seated at the bar while we waited for our table to open up (we waited for about 5 min). I had the traditional fish soup and a side salad, and my husband had their spinach risotto (called something else on the menu but that's what it was) and we shared their bread, hummus and olives to start (highly recommend!) I loved the fish soup, but it is definitely fishy (with a half a sardine floating in it lol) so be prepared for that! It was great to dip bread into and tasted very fresh. My husband really enjoyed the ham donut, perfect mix of salty and sweet, and the rice / risotto dish was to die for. True comfort meal! Service was great, staff was very friendly and attentive. Our meal total was about 45€ including two drinks. Recommend!

Yelp
Some of the best tasting steak I've ever had. My friend loved the cod as well. Short of a five due to the very small portions for the price point, but if you don't prioritize portion size, definitely quality food and a great place for you.

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE SERVICE. Waited in line for a table of 3 in the cold for 55 minutes only for the waiter to let a table of 4 who came after us to be seated first. Every time we asked, we were told the wait was 15 minutes until seating. Even at the hour mark, they told us another 20 minutes. The only reason I gave one star is because I can't give zero stars. Would not recommend

Yelp
My friend and I saw Faz Frio on TikTok prior to our trip to Lisbon. We went on our last night in town and crossed our fingers we could get a spot. We lucked out with a seat at the bar where Maria was our bartender. She was new but she didn't act like it! She was cranking out drinks like nobodys business! I got O Rapaz Dos Foguetes to drink,. It was made with tequila, coconut, jalapeno and lime and it was SO good that I got a second! We ordered a bunch of items and shared everything. The cheese was stinky but it was so good! We also got a beautiful steak for 19 euro which is unheard of in the states! In addition to the steak and stinky cheese we got octopus salad, croquettes and eggs with truffle and mushrooms (we were a little hesitant but we both raved about how good it was!) Our four cocktails and all the food listed above was only 90 euro! It's amazing how much cheaper everything is in Portugal! Overall we had an amazing meal and it was such a great way to end our time in Lisbon. It was definitely somewhere I'd recommend and go back to if I ever find myself in Lisbon again. Thank you Faz Frio, you rock!

Yelp
Absolutely perfect! Service and food was wonderful. Piedro was so kind. Everyone there wanted to please you. I'm not a bot, just a real person who went there 2x in the last week and just loved it.

Yelp
This restaurant is located on Hill overlooking the main tourist area, which has a lot of better restaurants than you'll get down below. It's a cute looking place with good service but a little pricier than other options. I had cod on top of a mashed potato purée which was quite good glass of wine which was nice and sparkling water. Total was €43.$.50. A little heads up in addition to charging you for the bread. They charge you separately for the cheese and spread to put on the bread so altogether that comes to €11.50 which is Above what you typically pray for your red charge and most restaurants they also add mandatory 5% tip again usual in other restaurants. So a good meal, but you're probably paying more than you would down the street in one of the other restaurants quality.

Yelp
Pedro and the entire team are fabulous hosts. They went out of their way to accommodate a large party and took such good care of us. The food is absolutely delicious and clearly made with love. I would highly recommend this restaurant as a must visit when you are in Lisbon!

Yelp
4.75 stars. Faz Frio was essentially my home away from home during a recent trip to Lisbon. It is owned by the people who were our Airbnb hosts and it was right beneath our awesome flat so we decided to check out the restaurant. First and foremost, this was tied for my favorite spot in the city for happy hour. The cocktails are great, and there is an awesome mix of clientele here (young and old, foreign and local, etc.). They usually have a cocktail of the day which at least on the three occasions that we went were always quite good. Food was generally quite good. It runs the gamut of Portuguese cuisine with a bit of a modern twist to some dishes. I'm not really sure what is supposed to be freezing over here (faz frio) because this was one of the better spots that we enjoyed in the city. Highly recommended for cocktails and some small plates.

Yelp
Nice casual spot with good solid food made from quality ingredients. The only thing that left a bad taste in my mouth was that the aggressive female manager seemed pretty rude and dismissive. Some of the other employees kept making eye contact with us and I got the impression they were trying to be extra nice to make up for the manager's bad attitude.

Yelp
What a lovely Portuguese dining experience! The menu seems to change every day only offering the freshest food selections. Each dish had so many impressive flavors and ingredients! One of our top favorite restaurants in Lisbon!

Yelp
Arrived at 7pm, was seated immediately. Busy restaurant with a nice vibe. Staff helpful and accomodating. Knew their menu and wine matching. Food was served promptly, it was extremely tasty with good portion sizes. Selection of Portugese tapas and mains. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Our hotel recommended this restaurant and we were completely disappointed. The food was freshly prepared but that's the best thing we can say about it. Everything we ordered was not anything like we expected and tasted just ok. We sat outside with cars roaring past and gas fumes blowing on us. After we left we noticed a restaurant on the other side of the street that had the majority of the diners, plus these diners looked like they were enjoying their food. We told our hotel that they should no longer recommend the Faz Frio restaurant. Based on the other Yelp reviews they must have been good at one time, but not anymore.

Yelp
Amazing Portuguese menu with unique choices. My favorite is the pasta with mascarpone, pumpkin, saffron and walnuts. One of many must try items from the starter menu. Friendly Fernando and the congenial staff made the overall dining experience memorable.

Yelp
We walked in on our first night in Lisboa. Jet lagged, hungry and not wanting to wait until the proper dinner hour. Faz Frio offered us starters until 1900 (7:00pm). Oh my! Besides what they served us we ordered octopus salad which was fabulous as was the service and the gin n tonics! Yippee! Home Run! Top it off w chocolate mouse and you've got a proper meal!

Yelp
The owner George is great and super friendly. The food was amazing and the cocktails superb. The restaurant also has a ton on history and is a great spot for dinner or even a couple of drinks and apps.

Yelp
We had a wonderful meal here! We did not order and trusted the owner to bring out food we liked. EVERYTHING was fabulous.

Yelp
First meal in Lisbon was a smash. Staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, prices very reasonable and the food was absolutely terrific. Could not believe the place wasn't busy. This restaurant is over 100 years old and has been lovingly restored. Stopped in for a nightcap last night and same guy who took care of us at lunch was still singing along to 70s disco at midnight. A gem in Príncipe Real.

Yelp
The food here is very good, especially for the area. The servers try and should get better should they stick around and get some experience. It's not the typical neighborhood spot, smaller portions and pricey, but very good and worth a visit.
