Federal Donuts is a relatively famous place in west Philly- a block away from UPenn's campus. As its name would infer, it's a pretty popular spot for donuts. And unless you're a Philly native, it also surprisingly serves as a spot for Korean fried chicken. (After 11, which I sadly discovered the first time I stopped by)
After a recommendation from a friend, I set out to try out this allegedly good chicken.
For 10 dollars, I received 5 wings and one honey doughnut. At first, I balked at the price. 10 dollars for 5 wings? I soon discovered that this price was more justified than I had initially believed- each wing was actually more of a "chicken leg"- (if you take a look at the photos included in the review, you'll see what I mean.) In addition, I also unexpectedly received a honey doughnut with my wings, which helped justify the 10 dollar price tag.
Overall, I enjoyed the food I ordered. The wings came very hot (so much I had to wait a minute before digging in) but in my opinion this is definitely a positive. They were sticky, but that's to be expected considering I order soy wings. In addition, the honey doughnut was very good! (Though that's to be expected from a doughnut place.)
For such a well known (at least to Philly natives) doughnut joint, it was actually very quiet the Thursday I went. There were about four people in the establishment (including me) and was a good environment for me to dig in and enjoy my meal.
I would definitely come again. While it's not the BEST Korean chicken wing location in Philly (because let's face it- it's facing stiff competition with other Korean restaurants... and all of Chinatown) it's proximity near UPenn makes this a good place to stop by if you're ever down to have some Korean chicken wings.
