My partner and I visited Fellinis and it was genuinely one of the most memorable vegetarian meals we have ever had. We walked in without a booking and were greeted with such warmth that we immediately felt welcome. The service throughout the whole evening was exceptional. Every member of staff was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. They held lovely conversations with their regular guests and it was clear that this is a place people return to often. One couple near us had even been given the same table as the night before. For us, that said everything. They also took my coat when I arrived and even complimented it as we were leaving which I thought was a really thoughtful touch.
The ambience was beautiful. Soft lighting, gentle music and a calm atmosphere that made the entire experience feel relaxed and elegant. The presentation of each plate was incredible. Every dish looked like it had been created by someone who truly cares about their craft.
For starters I had the grilled polenta with olive tapenade, caperberry and balsamic vinegar. The flavours were balanced and the tapenade tasted fresh and rich. My partner had the twice baked blue cheese souffle with cheese sauce and it was light, silky and full of flavour.
For my main course I ordered the puy lentil and cashew nut roast with boulangere potato, roasted vegetables and green peppercorn sauce. It arrived looking like the most luxurious version of a nut roast I have ever seen. The sauce was beautiful and the dish felt comforting but elegant at the same time. My partner chose the roasted aubergine and puy lentil moussaka with ricotta and creme fraiche topping served with tomato sauce and roasted new potatoes. He said it was a ten out of ten meal and even I enjoyed it, despite not normally liking moussaka. He actually said it was the first place he has ever been where he thought that missing out on dessert would genuinely be a shame.
Dessert confirmed that feeling. I chose the Malibu and raspberry roulade with ice cream which was light, creamy and full of fresh flavour. My partner ordered the gooseberry and strawberry crumble with ice cream and it was warm, comforting and perfectly balanced.
From start to finish the whole evening felt special. Beautiful food, beautiful service and a beautiful atmosphere. Fellinis has become one of our favourite places we have ever eaten and we will absolutely return on our next visit to Ambleside.
