"Hôtel Fenua Mata'i'oa is a low-key boutique hotel with five individually decorated suites, each with a funky mix of handicrafts and loudly patterned artwork and upholstery. As one of the smaller options on the island, the property feels more like a guesthouse than a proper hotel, but it still features comforts such as a full bar and restaurant, private island dining experiences, and lomilomi massages. The hotel also offers a number of Tahitian cultural experiences, including traditional crafts and private Polynesian dance lessons. The proceeds of both activities go to help support a local NGO. Traditional Tahitian dance and music performances can also be arranged. And for guests who really want an immersive experience, Fenua Mata'i'oa offers traditional Polynesian wedding ceremonies, staged right on the hotel’s verdant grounds."

This stay was truly amazing, the only thing I regret is that we were only there one night. The atmosphere cannot be captured in photos, but think boutique white lotus. ||We stayed in the princess Keona suite, which was impeccably furnished. I loved the attention to detail and the way the decor blended plants and the outdoors inside. We did not experience the mosquitoes, but my husband woke up early and opened the windows, and a friendly cat crawled in and curled up at my feet. ||The breakfast service was lovely, delivered right to our room. Afterwards, we enjoyed some snorkeling off the dock.

Our experience was fabulous. The bed was very comfortable — one of those that just hugs you. The only downside was breakfast: the quantity was quite small for the price, and we were left a bit hungry (we had ordered several items). Also, it was a pity that the kayak and snorkelling equipment rentals weren’t included but had to be paid for separately. Everyone was very kind — even the cats wandering around!

Absolutely stunning hotel. Perfect if you are looking for relaxation and privacy. You can tell they care about their hotel and their place on the lagoon. Yes, there is mosquitoes which is bound to happen outdoors and i totally agree with the owner wanting to use natural remedies for this. I would recommend adding a bell or something to the bar as sometimes you have to wait for someone to arrive to make you a drink (however they were delicious and always come with fruit and olives). Many local restaurants and a very well stocked store that is a 2 min walk from the hotel. Overall, would definitely recommend!

This place is other-worldly! The pictures don’t even begin to do it justice. It is truly an immersive experience. A secret garden with treasures to behold around every corner. I found Hotel Fenua Mata'i'oa last minute (literally same day), after we checked out of a very pricey overwater bungalow resort that was in disrepair and had critters, and we needed a place to stay for one night. As luck would have it, the overwater room at Fenua was available for that one night. At a fraction of the cost we’d paid for the previous resort, Fenua was a thousand times better! I am so mad at myself for not finding this place sooner! I would have spent the entire week here.

My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon, and this place was absolutely amazing! It is a truly unique and original place with a lot of soul. Everything looks like somebody with an artistic eye spent careful time on it, down to the smallest details. The staff were all extremely helpful and friendly. ||We stayed in the Prestige Overwater Suite, so we had a bungalow for our bedroom, a separate private bungalow for our bathroom, and the two are connected by a covered kitchen/seating area. What a cool experience it was to wake up in the morning, make some breakfast and coffee in our separate kitchen (you can also order breakfast from them if you want to), and then sit on the private deck and watch the sun rise. And of course, a drink on the deck as the sun sets was a must-do every evening as well. ||I will say that part of the "realness" of this resort is that nature has not been sterilized out of it, so there were mosquitos and geckos. It wasn't much of a problem for us, but if somebody was very sensitive about those sorts of things, they might have a bit of a hard time. ||There was also a cat that graced us with her presence periodically throughout each day, so we felt like we had a pet for our stay. We kind of miss the cat now.

My wife and me expected a nice and peaceful journey, but the welcome was horrible. After my wife pointed out the humidity level of the facilities, the manager started to litteraly fight with her, saying "don't come here, don't ask for this, you are not welcome if you start like this". So, 1st expect a 90% humidity level, without any fresh air or dehumidifier device, bathrooms in the bedroom with no ventilation (is this legal ?), a lot of moisture, 2cd expect a lot of mosquitos, and eventually expect the most despictable manager I have ever seen. No coffee or tea for our breakfeat (insane !), you cannot ask because people are elsewhere, very bad mood and energy everywhere. It seems the employees suffer a toxic management, the same people doing 3 or 4 jobs at the same time (barmaid = receptionist = cleaning lady = eveything else). The location was ok, very nice view in front of the lagoon, but how to fully enjoy it, I will never know. Avoid this location, this hostel is no more than a 2* + toxic management. Hope it helps.

So, a bit dated. But, I was just looking at 6 year old photos from our stay at Fenua Mataioa hôtel in 2/2019. While I have been fortunate to stay at some great hotels, in some memorable places, around the world; in hindsight sight, none surpasses the fondness I have for the lovely time spent at this lovely place. Thanks for the enduring wonderful memories! I need to plan a next visit.

Polynesian Paradise personified. Every detail to make your stay perfect has been attended too. The stroll through the foliage to get to the front desk transports you out of the everyday world and truly into a Polynesian Paradise. A welcome cocktail in hand while you are shown all of the amenities of the grounds and room was such a wonderful touch. The lounge, deck and grounds are amazing. The art and statuary make you feel as if you are in a cultural museum. There are little hidden treasures everywhere! Breakfast, including fresh tropical fruit, served in your room was a perfect way to start your day. Our room, the prestige suite, was spacious and comfortable. I honestly slept better than I have ever slept in a hotel. I am sure the plush bed and soothing waves in the background contributed to that. The interior surpassed the photos online (that is rare!!) Relaxing on the deck with a book or snorkeling with the incredible diversity of fish right off of the deck was bliss. The crystal clear, warm water was heaven. I will dream of this vacation forever.
