I am very fond of the Ferry Boat for nostalgic reasons. I hung out here as a teenager and later when home from college. Those were the days of the juke box playing Procul Harum, no food served apart from a packet of nuts or crisps, and occasionally a folk night. Forward fifty years and it is still one of my favorite places to go when I visit the old homestead. It has evolved into a restaurant with rugs on the floor instead of gritty sand, a separate area to play pool, and a very interesting menu with lots of choices for families or those out for a delicious dinner. I still wish that they had pasties for purchase at lunchtime, as I am sure many people would like to take one to eat at the beach before they buy their Roskilly's from the kiosk. However, it has become less snooty the last couple of years, and we can't beat their fish and chips over other local pubs. The Red Lion and Pandora are distant runners up to the Ferry Boat. The portion is huge and I love their minty peas, when I usually find mushy peas quite disgusting.
The car park up top is free after October 1st, or at least, I don't pay then! The Helford Passage is a beautiful spot, and a walk along the beach or road at sunset is calm and peaceful. Sometimes it makes me wonder why I live elsewhere now.
