On the Grid : Fancy's on 5th

"The owners of Fancy's on 5th (who also own nearby favorite MELT) joke that there’s nothing fancy about the space except the name — a nod to Miss Fancy the elephant who was a main attraction and mascot of the original Birmingham Zoo (now home to nearby Avondale Park). Fancy’s is charming and casual, serving up regional oysters, gourmet burgers, and craft cocktails in a comfortable space decked out in locally sourced wood, exposed brick walls, and original ceilings and tiles. Watch out for Octavius the Octopus, the house mascot." - Lewis Communications

Google
Love this brewery. The locations are very unique and full of character. The beers are good solid beers, and you'll definitely find one you like. I got the Buffalo IPA wings. Wow! Top five wings I've had. A little pricey, but it's downtown and everything is more expensive currently. Great covered and open outdoor seating. Go here!

Google
They have live music very often and great food to go with it. My sweet potato tots were not mushy and that's often my complaint when I order them at other restaurants. Chicken was fresh and juicy.

I’ve heard good things about Ferus and so we decided to go there on a whim after one of our other favorite restaurants was closed for New Years Eve. Very nice dining area and outdoor space. Unexpectedly, it was very refined but still gave off a strong sports bar vibe. Would definitely return for any important upcoming games! I got the Pomegranate Gin Fizz and the Belly of the Beast sandwich with the house chips. Everything was delicious! Katelyn was our server and she was wonderful.

Jason P.

Google
I got the fish and chips and they were pretty good but the service was lackluster, at best. Young kids standing around and having to be asked for anything that you need.

Shuff M.

Google
Friendly people, awesome beer selection, solid wine options (for a beer place), reasonably priced good food, and a great outdoor area. One of our favorite spots when its nice outside.

Cleve M.

Google
They were really good at first, but then they started hiring people that were more into their weirdness than service and now it's PERMANENTLY CLOSED. And deservedly so.

Google
Not my first visit and it's always nice inside. Curious to me that they don't carry the stout beers that are available at Trussville??? I was able to get a stout, but it wasn't one of theirs.

Google
Pimento Cheese Burger was amazing. Really enjoyed new-looking backyard space with giant TV.

Yelp
Sundays at Ferus are Fundays. This was my first visit to Ferus. My son, who works in Avondale, suggested it. Their outside area was really nice, plenty of seating and a stage with live music on Sundays. They also serve a Sunday brunch. I ordered the Avondale Breakfast Plate. It came with a biscuit, bacon a choice of eggs and side choice of either fruit, garlic herb potatoes which they were out of or cheese grits. The food was good, but being a busy Sunday, we had to wait a while for it.

Yelp
This is the kinda brunch that sends you straight to bed for a nap after! My friend and I stopped by one Saturday and thankfully it wasn't too crowded. We were swiftly seated right by the window, which has a perfect view of Avondale park. We started with cocktails of course and my daiquiri was delish. I also tried pimento dip for the first time and it wasn't bad. The color and texture always seemed odd to me but Ferus has a really great jam or jelly type topping on theirs that adds good flavor. My salad was the bomb dot com. Plenty of bacon crumbles and blue cheese along with fresh veggies. My friend's burger was also tasty but the tots stole the show. The caramel dipping sauce that comes with it needs to be bottled and sold at the counter.

Yelp
My food and drink were great! Our server, who was also the bartender was really nice and friendly. I believe we were there kind of early, so it wasn't too crowded or anything. Nice and clean. We had the Hogpen fries that had bacon and pork rinds on them which were so good, definitely different! I also had the Hot Honey Bacon burger which was so good with the pimento and fried green tomato, I'll get that again! Also, you should try the Very Berry cocktail, it has Titos, blueberry puree, etc. Very good and potent lol. We will be back!

Yelp
STAY BREW-TIFUL! Ferus on 41st is the second location for the Ferus company. The other is located in Trussville. The Trussville location is in the entertainment district and plays a main role for the area. Ferus on 41st is a smaller/more condensed version. This smaller location is located in Avondale, a pretty popular bar hopping area of Birmingham. There is a spacious outdoor patio with a large projector perfect for watching football. Came here on New Years Eve as one of our bar hopping spots. I was so happy to learn that they were still serving food when we had gotten here. I needed something to fill my stomach that was not just alcohol. We ordered the Parmesan wings and the sweet potato fries. The wings were crispy, perfectly cooked and fell off the bone quick and easy. The sweet potato fries were crunchy with the perfect amount of sweetness/saltiness ratio. On the side came with a small container of caramel sauce. I have fond memories when I was in college of going to a local grilled cheese chain where they had the best and I mean the BEST sweet potato fries. They were in a waffle shape and came with marshmallow dipping sauce. I thought nothing could beat those fries, but Ferus has now come to a close second with their delicious version. I do believe that sweet potato fries belong with a sweet sauce and not ketchup, mayo or other savory condiments. The drink that I ordered at Ferus, as I am a sour beer kind of gal, I ordered the tropical beer. Which was very tasty. Flavors of pineapple, citrus and melon. I also had a few cups of water. I wish I could give a higher rating for Ferus, however, one of the bartenders had such an awful attitude. Scowling all night and just acting pissed that she had to work on New Years Eve. Though I do believe as a bar tender she could have been a little happier to work NYE as it is known to be one of the best nights for bartenders. She could have made plenty of money in just one night by just giving a smile and having a happier bed side manner. I'm excited to come back to Ferus on a night or a mid afternoon where it is not as crazy busy. I feel I might have a better experience here. Overall, delicious food, fun vibes, good drinks, but customer service that could have been better.

Yelp
We've come to Ferus a few times now for a quick drink or bite and have always enjoyed our experience. The only reason for 4/5 stars is because of the time it takes to get some service. The staff is usually inside or away when we come to the outside bar. We love to sit outside with our dog, though, and enjoy the Adirondack chairs they have that face the theatre screen outside. The food is also so delicious! We will keep coming back for the drinks & food.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in for a few drinks at the bar. There appeared to be only two bartenders working the entire restaurant/bar area. The lines to order drinks and food were so long and did not move quickly at all. We had planned to order some appetizers but after seeing how slowly things were moving, we stuck to drinks. For a Friday evening, they really needed to improve their staffing.

Yelp
Really cool venue with an outside patio featuring live music and cold beer. Good place to chill, have a drink and some food.

Yelp
Definitely on the top five list of best burgers I've had. I ordered it with all of the fixings and was not disappointed. This jewel of a spot is located in the Avondale area in Birmingham. Food is excellent with a great happy hour. Btw, I sat at the

Yelp
Great food, atmosphere is awesome and I love the outdoor patio area. Shows this year have been great!

Yelp
I must say that I had a fantastic first time here , on a Friday afternoon! The outside patio ( with heaters) was very pleasant and enjoyable. My friend and I both had burgers. I tried the mushroom/Swiss and added bacon( didn't even get a pic of it). It was ok. I didn't overly LOVE it. As my side , I opted for the roasted Brussel sprouts. They were packed with flavor and I enjoyed them . We also had pimento cheese fritters. I loved the presentation... I hate grits so when I could distinctively tastes the stone ground grits. I didn't want anymore. Lol. My friend had the smash burger which is one of my fav burgers!!! She really enjoyed it! As her side , she had a mountain of fries! Plenty to share. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. They made sure we were satisfied with our food and beverages. I definitely love this Ferus location. I love the Trussville location as well. They both offer two different experiences and atmospheres. This location is in a prime spot- check it out soon!!!

Yelp
I want to be able to give this location 5 stars, but the service is what brings them down. Our server was incredibly slow and just seemed uninterested in being there all together. The food is fantastic though. I wish I had remembered to take more pictures! I had the pimento cheese burger and the red velvet sundae bread pudding. Both were absolutely delicious. I feel this location has a better menu than the Trussville location. I'm about equal distance to the two and I would choose Ferus on 41st over Trussville.

Quinn M.

Yelp
Weird ever since they merged with Avondale Common House. Worst margarita I've ever tasted, fish & chips was not great. Other food was good. Vegan options were good. Service was good, the vibes inside was a little off for a Friday night

Yelp
Where do I start. First there is no host or a sign to say seat yourself. We came in on a Saturday around 4:30 it wasn't crowded yet they only had one waitress seemed like for the entire place. We order the fried pickles and wings. The pickles were okay we had got lemons pepper that wasn't hot and the maple sweet chili whatever flavor it is. That flavor was ok but their wings aren't worth $13 for 6 wings that aren't jumbo. I ordered the pomegranate fizz it was meh okay. The bartender was moving like a snail and my friend decided to cancel her drink order. She had no sense of urgency not sure what was her issue. I ordered the ferus burger and it was cooked beyond well done and a little burnt making it dry. Had it not been seasoned it would've been inedible being that I only ate half of it. My friend got the shrimp taco grilled option and they were okay. I would not recommend this place to anyone not even for a glass of water.

Yelp
Came here for lunch recently & it was ok I got the burger & my husband got the Philly steak sandwich My burger was ok but his sandwich was outstanding! I think I should've gotten the same our server was pleasant but seemed liked she'd rather be some place else if we come back I'm definitely getting the Philly I did however enjoy my drink but I forgot the name of it

Yelp
Absolutely terrible experience when me and my fiancé went to celebrate our engagement. We had to wait at least 7 minutes to even be seated by the hostess, we waited at the front the whole time. Finally we were told to sit at a wobbly table with nothing on it. We then proceeded to sit for 15 minutes without being helped or even looked at. Wish I could review the food but we didn't get the chance to order before we simply left. 0/10 experience, don't ever try to go there to celebrate a special occasion.

Yelp
Moving into a restaurant location that was previously loved is a tough thing. Especially when it is totally different from a crowd and food standpoint. That is the thing for us with Ferus. We loved Fancy's and always felt like it was a great experience every time we went. It was also too crowded on the nights we actually went. So for this experience, it was much different. There was hardly anyone in there. And it still felt the same with different menu options. Can't blame Ferus on either of those. Just a different vibe to wrap my mind around. We decided to start with the fried pickles. They were plentiful and cooked well. But there was only so much we could eat with anticipation of entrees coming. I am a sucker for a French dip. So that is what I went with. It was very good with plenty of au jus. That is one of my pet peeves of some French dips is the lack of au jus. They fries were ok. But they seemed like they were in bag frozen. The vibe was very calm for a weekend night. Which is not the worst. Just, like I said, different. I would like to come back and have another experience before making any grand reviewing gestures. But right now. It was good, not great. A solid 4 stars.

Yelp
Maybe we came at an off time and we weren't going for beverages but for a quick meal, but this was just average. The food was good..nothing special. The fries were the highlight of everybody's meal which in my opinion shouldn't be the case. Service was not what it should have been for only having 4 tables full in the whole restaurant. Server seemed inconvenienced and was not attentive to needs of the table. Too many options in Birmingham for food. If you are going to drink it may be a whole different experience!

Yelp
I celebrated my birthday here last night, and everything was great! They were able to accommodate a large group with a table in the back. This place was beautiful and gave me real Nashville vibes! I loved the drinks here! It might seem like a brewery, but I got two cocktails that I absolutely loved. The rum punch and the vodka flavored with cherry limeade were both sweet and delicious! You would have no idea there was any alcohol in it at all. To eat, I had the BLT and the french fries. It was a ton of food! Both were delicious. Probably the best BLT and fries I've ever had. I cant wait to be back here!

Yelp
I really enjoyed my trip to Ferus. I was really excited for this location to open up and I had really been looking forward to it. The weather was sunny. So I met up with a friend and we sat in the outside patio area. It was a light breeze, but it was still very pleasant. They had heaters in this area. So, when we did get a little cool, they turned them on for us. Katie, our server, took really good care of us and made good recommendations. The manager came out and was also very friendly. For the appetizer, we had Pimento Cheese fritters. I could have eaten these all night. The fritters also had some sort of syrupy sauce on the bottom that made them even more delectable. The pimento cheese was mixed with stone ground grits and then rolled into a ball and fried. So yummy and I would highly recommend. For my entree, I had the Smash Burger and it was great. I loved it and I could tell that it would easily be one of my favorite burgers. For my side, I had fries. They give you so many fries. It was enough to share. My friend had the Mushroom and Swiss burger and added bacon to it. She seemed to enjoy it. She had the roasted brussel sprouts for her side. The sides seem very plentiful. So we just shared our sides with each other. The brussel sprouts were seasoned really well and the fries were perfectly cooked (not too hard and not too much salt). I also had a Rum Punch that was really good. It was very refreshing.

Yelp
Great satellite location for the brewery! They have Ferus items and other select guest beers. Also have a bar for other drinks. Has a nice outside area and patio as well! Parking is on the street, so park by the library and walk. Menu changes which is nice l, however they have some staples that are great! Like their burger
google avatar

Yelp
We've been wanting to try the Trussville Ferus location for a while but got to the Avondale location first! First, great atmosphere and not just beer to drink, right up my alley. I got the rum punch and it was stout without being overpowering. I loved it. We also got the pimento cheese fritters and jalapeño jam. At first I thought they needed more salt but when I added the jam it was perfect! We split a double bacon cheese burger with fries. It hit the spot for sure! We finished off with their white chocolate bread pudding and it was amazing to look at and eat. Very impressed! We will be back and hopefully get to try the Trussville location as well.

Megan N.

Yelp
This place has so much potential but the service staff is below average. I've been multiple times and each time the staff members seem put out if I ask for condiments, have a question about menu, or for general help. Not to mention they expect a big tip for no service at all. You order off a QR code or at the bar counter. The outdoor space is so cool and the food is pretty good- it's the service that makes this place less than desirable.

Louis Montero M.

Yelp
I catch a stomach infection last night out of a burger ‍ in still in pain y'all need to watch out I'm very angry
google avatar

Yelp
Poor service. Apparently a bus-your-own table kind of place. Beer in plastic cups. The service is as if no one works here.
google avatar

Autumn F.

Yelp
Been to this location & the trussville location & to be honest I think the trussville one is better, but the food here wasn't bad. We had loaded fries, the prime rib sandwich & potato salad. Don't get the potato salad unless you REALLY like dill.

Jennifer D.

Yelp
Beer is good if you like hops and food looked like a typical beer joint. I will say the brunch menu looked yummy! Note you can not buy can beer at this location. Service was rude and slow. Be careful if you bring a dog. They have set rules but nothing is posted.

Jim G.

Yelp
I've been to the Trussville location a few times and really enjoyed it. The beer, of course, is solid here. Service and atmosphere were positive. The food is the issue here. Brussel sprouts were overly greasy. I haven't eaten at Arby's in decades, but I recall their Beef & Cheddar to be better than the version at Ferus. Too much bread. Not enough meat. The meat was also very fatty and seemed to be of low quality. I was really surprised since the food in Trussville has always been prepared to high standards.

Diana W.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place after seeing amazing pictures online. Food was over salted and subpar. I was sick before I made it home. I had the French dip and crispy Brussels. Drinks = terrible. This is a "no-go" for us ever again. And I won't even comment on service because it was nonexistent.

Pam T.

Yelp
Vegan hamburger was delicious! Also the side of roasted broccoli. The restaurant has a cool vibe. The service was excellent.
