On the Grid : Fidel's Cigar Shop

"Fidel's has been a staple in Westport for over fifteen years. When you walk in the doors, you're greeted with floor-to-ceiling cigar displays, vintage chandeliers & old-world leather chairs resting on a Persian rug. Fidel's is split in two, with the store in front & cigar lounge + bar in back. (BYOB is welcome as well.) Fidel's accommodates everyone from pipe-lovers to cigar aficionados. Their products are harvested from the world's premier cigar exporters, including the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Ecuador. Who knows, maybe even Cuban cigars will be back on the market soon." - Cat Coquillette

Needed a little getaway, and also knock out some work. I'd been to Fidel's a few times now for sticks, but this was my first hang in the lounge. Nick was awesome recommending a GREAT smoke. The lounge was clean, well ventilated and super chill. Couldn't ask for more. My new hideaway! Cheers!

One Word Phil. He was Amazing. Personable, friendly, and knowledgeable about the Cigars. The smell of the cigars are bit overpowering when entering Fidel's. However U will get use to it. The place has a comfy feel to it. I got 3 cigars for $22. Luv it. Check out review: Ashley SoBougee on YouTube

Great little lounge. Nick was friendly and helpful. A good variety of cigars to choose from. I visit Kansas City once a year, and I'll be back.

Google
Great place. Really enjoyed the selection of cigars and greatly appreciated the hospitality. Was recommended a fine cigar to enjoy inside. Can't wait to visit again, this time with a fine brew in hand.

It was my very first time visiting a cigar shop this past Saturday night. Upon walking in, the young lady working behind the counter, who was White, with dirty blonde hair, wearing a rounded hat, seemed very annoyed & exhibited little to no patience with the customers who had come in before us. For example, a man came from the back and asked her where water was located, and she snapped, "in the sink". My friend & I were taken aback by her tone & response, but we decided to continue looking around. She seemed knowledgeable & answered the questions we had; however, it seemed a bit rushed on her end. I made sure to emphasize multiple times that it was my first time at a cigar shop in hopes that it would soften her a bit. After picking out our cigars, she asked if we'd like to keep the canisters they came in. I told her that we would & she said okay, & after we paid for our cigars, she cut them, gave us the basics, & pointed to the back to where we could sit. She told us to come back to the front when we were finished so she could cut them again for storage so we could enjoy them later. After we sat in the back for a bit and enjoyed our cigars, we were ready to leave so we headed back to the front. When I asked for our cigar canisters, she replied, "I threw them away." I was shocked because she was the one that asked if we wanted to keep them. I politely reminded her of that conversation & asked her why she threw them away despite knowing that, & she nonchalantly responded, "I just didn't think about it." Although I was perplexed, I decided to just let it go. She then suggested bagging them instead. I said it was fine but in the midst of her prepping my cigar, a man walked in and asked for mints. She again, curtly responded, "They're over there" & vaguely pointed over to her right without actually showing him. When I looked back to the counter to my surprise, I watched her take my cigar & place it in a bag with someone else’s smoked cigars from another customer. I calmly pointed out what she had just done, & once again her response was uncaring & unapologetic. She just stopped looked down at the bag of now-mixed cigars, & oddly stared me down. A simple apology & a replacement cigar would have sufficed; however, I didn't get that from her. After no apology or solution was given, I expressed my concern about how unsanitary the mistake had been & how I no longer could accept my cigar back. Still she said nothing. The gentlemen who waited behind then stepped up in the midst of her stare-down & said, "Mam, I'd like to buy both of these ladies a cigar." out of sympathy for us. I turned to thank him but also took the opportunity to explain it was the 2nd mistake on the young lady's behalf & that she issued not one apology. I also explained to him that despite this, I remained calm & non-confrontational, and in return, all I received was a stare-down with zero accountability. At that moment, she rudely blurted out, "And I'm not going to apologize and you two can leave!" My friend & I were in complete disbelief. Her tone was filled with anger, & aggression. Again, I made the conscious choice to remain calm. As women of color, we are all too familiar with this sort of behavior & with the gaslighting that is used to villainize people who look like us in situations where we are innocent. Her reply had shown us we were no longer welcome there & we knew in an instant police could be called & the truth manipulated although we had done nothing wrong. At that moment, for my friend and I's safety, we decided to leave. As I was leaving, I told her that this incident was meant for her to learn, take accountability, & fix it as the next time she mistreated someone as poorly as she did us, she may not be as fortunate to get patient & understanding people despite her ill behavior. Let's just say we will NEVER return to this location again as mistakes are not acknowledged, customers are treated poorly, & we were met with such aggression & nastiness, & we didn't feel safe in that space despite being innocent paying customers.

Yelp
If you're a local cigar aficionado and are not a regular - for shame. If you happen to be in town and want to experience a local cigar spot with a cool vibe and people then look no further. I frequent KC a few times a year and have had Fidel's on my list of cigar spots to visit. This time I had the chance and I'm so glad I didn't. Nestled in the heart of the eclectic West Port neighborhood is this funky little cigar joint that has a very good selection of sticks, a quaint lounge and best of all just good folks running the shop and chill peeps enjoying. Jason was the man in charge of the evening and he made the experience just that much more memorable. Well versed in tobacco we vibed and he highly recommended I try a Sans Pareil cigar...I'm embarrassed to say I had not heard of this brand, but I'm happy to have been introduced to it. I chose the Red which is a torpedo with an Ecuadorian Corojo wrapper and Dominican filler and binder. I'll fast forward to say, from my pic you'll see I smoked it to the nub and nearly burned my fingers - yes, it was that good. Once well lit with a house complimentary cedar stick it burned evenly throughout and held a great ash. Just a very well made cigar. On item of note - it's BYOB! No corking fee. So, one tip - walk over to the local Sun Fresh market, which is a mere two blocks away, and is well stocked with beer, wine, and a decent selection of liquor. That's right, inside the supermarket you'll find the necessary goodies to complement your stick. Then just make your way back and enjoy your time at Fidel's. I'll be back soon Fidel's!

Yelp
Had the potential to be a decent neighborhood cigar shop. Can't really say. it advertised 10p closing but really closed at 8p. Rep said they couldn't get on their own website to change it. Wasted uber trip.

Yelp
Love this place. Always a friendly person to help you pick out a cigar. The only entry price is buying a cigar to smoke in the back room. The place is byob and haven't run into anyone I'd describe as less than friendly among the customers. They always have sports or a good movie on the tv and the air filters work pretty well

Yelp
I go when it's not busy, and one of the partners and another employee helped me at separate times. Very knowledgeable, not pushy, good calm environment to relax, watch Seinfeld and burn a great cigar and forget about the work week.

Yelp
Relaxing lounge with a great selection of premium cigars. The staff was helpful with my selection. Be advised that due to local laws, it is BYOB.

Yelp
What an awesome place!! Was at Fidel's on a business/leisure trip, had an hour before meeting friends and didn't mind smelling like cigars. Asked the attendant for his favorite smoke I could finish under an hour. "A Short Story" he said. He perfectly cut this beautiful guy and I sat down in a comfy chair amongst a handful of other regulars and watched the last 40 minutes of the movie "Dodgeball." Honestly, couldn't have been a more simple and enjoyable business transaction! The place was clean, plenty of large, clean ash trays and happy people there to laugh and enjoy a smoke and in a comfortable setting!! I'll be back next time, because I'll make time. If only for a short story!

Yelp
It's been a long time that we haven't been back to Fidel's and we're not disappointed!!! There's so many positive changes took place. They're having a smoking lounge and outdoor seating options. The guy that helped us was friendly and knowledgeable. I love visiting this store! And if you want the gold old cigars "Free smell", you must stop by!!!!

Yelp
I reserved Fidel's for a couple hours for my Grooms bachelor party. They close early on Sundays so we were able to reserve for a reasonable price that night. I also was able to sneak in before the guys got there to drop off alcohol, gifts, and dessert. Communicated with both Nick and Phil about the event and they knocked it out of the park. Highly recommend renting the space for a special event.

Yelp
Solid little cigar lounge in the KC area. I travel weekly for work and I'm always looking for "that spot" in each city I'm in. Fidel's is definitely that spot in KC. Great atmosphere, employees are great and comfy lounge. Oh and the cigar selection is spot on! Keep up the good work Fidel's!

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about Phil the manager of Fidel's!!! Stopped in here midway through a bachelorette party laaaate on Saturday night to buy the Bride a celebration cigar and Phil was so knowledgeable and kind! He answered all of our questions with enthusiasm and didn't make us feel dumb/silly or out of place even though we were fully dressed in Mamma Mia / disco attire Highly recommend going to check out Fidel's!

Richard S.

Yelp
Nice shop, pleasant atmosphere. Phil was cordial & knowledgeable. I'll return when in Kansas City

Yelp
This shop is amazing a buddy and I stopped in cause we could smell the awesoome just walking by. Was an amazing find the workers there were insanely versed in all things cigars. They made recommendations showed us a few cool things and even let you know which cigars are local to the area and can't be found anywhere else. Great selection plus in the back room there is a lounge which we had to just stay and relax for a bit as we enjoyed our purchase. The other customers are also great people had some great convo's with them. One thing though if you wanna enjoy a drink while you relax you gotta bring your own. Other then that fantastic place. Enjoy.

Yelp
Nice small little cigar shop with very good prices. A room in the rear for customers to smoke seats about 8-10. Bring in your own favorite beverage and watch whatever is on the tv.
google avatar

Yelp
I don't have much to say. I was with a friend who came here. He is on a first name basis with the workers and comes often for cigars. Its a cool spot if you're into cigars, clearly. I am not, but the employee was friendly.

Yelp
Nice lounge, very good atmosphere. Feel like im in an old warehouse in the 30's... dim lighting allows you to feel relaxed and mellow .... cigar selection is varied . Missing a few favorites but found something new .

Yelp
Fidel's beckons to you when you walk out of Korma Sutra, stuffed with good food. It whispers - come and get a lovely smoke to complement that great meal. It doesn't always work, but it's rare that I don't at least walk into Fidel's and take a smell and walk, if I don't necessarily buy a cigar or tobacco for my pipes. Staff is knowledgeable and super-laid-back. Get "take out" or sit and enjoy your smoke right there in some comfortable leather chairs.

Yelp
Out of the cigar shops I've been to in Kansas, this one is on point and possibly the best one slightly over Old Town Cigar. The manager is is super friendly. He had a chill personality and he's entertaining. He is laid back and knows most of his customers. I love the fact that the cigars are cheap! I wish their lounge was a bit more tidy and organized; it needs a bigger area for sure. I was smoking an Oliva G-series which is a dark maduro wrap with nice veins and tight hold. It burns slow with a bold finish. For $6 this was a steal. I'll be coming back here for another!

Yelp
Was visiting from out of State for a few days & looking for a place to relax & grab a smoke go after dinner. They have a nice selection of cigars, pricing is in line with most other cigars lounges / shops I've been to. Lounge area is a bit on the smaller side, do seating is very limited; 12 to 15 spots to set. It's a BYOB, so make sure if you want to drink; even non-alcoholic drinks, bring your own. The place was busy, but quiet atmosphere, not too much conversing was going on. We got there at 9:15; at 9:55 we got the 5 minute warning that they were closing. I'm not sure if it's a local ordinance issue, but 10:00 rolled around and everyone has to leave. I thought that was odd, you had 10-12 people inside smoking, but they sorta rushed you out the door.

Yelp
This is a great place to get a cigar in Westport. It's a small quaint little shop with a huge selection. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and the owner, Tom, is one heck of a nice guy willing to do anything to keep his customers happy. I would highly recommend checking out Fidel's if you're ever in the Kansas City midtown area They have a vents every month with superstars of the cigar industry present. I've met Jaime Garcia, Glen Case, Alan Rubin and many other superstars. They also have a huge pipe and pipe tobacco selection. It's also a BYOB location so bring your own beverage, sit down, have a cigar with some great people. Every time I go in there the customers are top notch and great company! Fidel's also has an incredible Arturo Fuente selection. They get all of the hard-to-find Opus X, Rosado, Don Carlos, Aniversario and any other Fuente that's impossible to find anywhere else!

Yelp
A great staff and decent selection of pipe tobacco - 3.4 stars Located in the trend setting, vintage chic Westport district, Fidel's is a nice tobacconist shop. I was able to get there pretty easily via walking and the Metro, and at first glance, it has a vintage appeal located in a turn-of-the-century brick building with a mural sign. When I walked in, I was greeted immediately and was impressed by the stocked showcases lining the walls with a great variety of cigars. I was there for pipe tobacco, though, for which I was impressed by the quality but not really the quantity. They only had about 15 or so varieties to choose from. The clerk was fairly knowledgeable about pipe tobacco and helped me pick out two non-aromatics. Unfortunately, they don't let you try any before you pick them out, you just have to go on their recommendation. However, it is not cheap at around $4.50/oz. The lounge area is okay but small, and the seats are definitely past their prime. They only offer water for sell by the bottle (~$1) so bring cash since the minimum debit is $5 (no tabs allowed apparently). Overall, it is a nice shop that has a very friendly staff. The lounge is okay but you really wouldn't want to hang out very long. The pipe tobacco is high quality but not abundant. Also, while the tobaccos I bought were good quality, if I had the opportunity to try them beforehand, I honestly wouldn't have purchased them (just not my palette). Still, it's a neat shop in a cool setting.

Yelp
I came here two years ago and did not have a pleasant experience and vowed I would never return. ( The older guy working acted as if I were bothering him and shouldn't have been there-left and went elsewhere) This week I happened to be in KC on business and searched for cigar lounges and up pops Fidel's. Not remembering ever being here at all, I get here and the place is absolutely cool, the guys working here were fantastic. Although they didn't have what I normally smoke they have a good selection of smokes, so I found my #5 happy with that. Nice and quiet place, small but comfortable lounge. Patrons nice enough and a decent filtration system, not Smokey at all. Really cool little neighborhood, outdoor smoking in the summer apparently. Pleasantly surprised!

Brian K.

Yelp
Had a buddy visit from out of town and this was the only place open late night. Not the biggest or best lounge I've been too but definitely a cool crowd and manager.

Yelp
Fidel's is freaking awesome. I walked out of my hotel, got some coffee at Broadway Coffee Roasters and started my morning walk around Westport. I walked down Pennsylvania Ave from the south, expecting some more bars and strange stores. I was happily surprised when I walked in front of Fidel's. I had never heard of it before (even on Yelp!) and looked at their welcome sign. It was around 0945 and it said they opened at 1000. I decided it was worth a shot and opened the door and walked in. I came in and met Scott, who told me he had been in the business for over 15 years. It showed. He was extremely knowledgable and was able to help me make selections based on my current likings. I even asked about some budget cigars and he was able to point me in the right direction. The number of brands Fidel's carries is unbelievable. They carry a few of the big-name brands but mostly smaller, boutique brands. I had never heard of 90% of what they carried. Very nice selection of cutters, torches, and humidor accessories as well. Their back room had a quaint, comfortable, lounge. A smaller, more intimate cigar lounge, which I prefer to the new big open rooms and large "lounges". What really caught me off guard was their prices. They were so much cheaper than anywhere else I have been. Amazing prices even on hard to find selections. The thing that made me know Fidel's was the right place, was the fact that they give even more discounts to our service members and public service workers. They won my business and I'll be back every time I am in KC.
google avatar

Denise E.

Yelp
Poor customer service and very rude, the guy acted as if we couldn't afford to buy the cigars. He said things like "these cigars cost" and "how much can you spend"......not cool at all.
google avatar

Yelp
Good selection and fair prices. Parking is a bit tricky especially if you have a large vehicle. Some of the staff is relatively new so come prepared.

Yelp
Nice spot, good ventilation good prices. I'm impressed. Nice place to chill or watch a game while the family is doing their thing

Yelp
I am so disappointed in what used to be one of our favorite cigar shops. We visited Fidel's on Thanksgiving Eve and I purchased my husband 6 nice cigars for $53. He lit one up as the others in our party--which we had recommended the place to--made their purchases. We felt like we needed to hurry out since we had walked in the door 10 minutes before closing time. After they unlocked the door to let us out, it was now after closing time, we walked to our car and my husband asked if I had picked up his cigars, which he had laid down on the counter when lighting up one of them. I had not. At that point we did not want to walk all the way back since it was well past closing time and they were probably gone. I tried to call right then but they did not answer. Nor did they the next day, obviously sine it was. Thanksgiving; additionally their answering machine did not accept messages. I did call the next day and talked to Jake, who said he looked around and could not find them. I told him that they had to be there. He said he would ask Mike--the only other person who was there that night--and he assured me he would call me back, whether he found them or not. He said they could have been picked up and placed with some other packages of cigars. I never received a call back. Tonight I stopped in, with my itemized receipt in hand, and talked to Jake and Mike and one other gentleman...they all said the cigars were not found and there was nothing they could do. This astounded me, as that was highly improbable and unlikely. I realize keeping track of our cigars is not their responsibility, but they were left there...and no one else was around. This unfortunate situation, and their lackadaisical attitude towards it has left me with a bad taste in my mouth. They are obviously not interested in maintaining their customer base. I left their store, disappointed, and headed towards Diebels, where I will shop from now on.

Yelp
I'm one of those "I don't smoke unless I'm 3-4 drinks in" types of smokers, so more times than I can count have I been in Westport and needed to make a nicotine run. Thankfully Fidel's has always been there for me, so I don't have to go slogging down Broadway to one of the sketch gas stations. Well, they haven't ALWAYS been there for me. Years ago this place was more of a "specialty" tobacco shop, and would sneer at me for asking for a regular brand of smokes. Thankfully, something has changed. The snobbery is gone, and the Parliaments have arrived - though I'm willing to bet this has more to do with economic realities than it does a change of heart. Still, the people I've interacted with here over the past couple of years are friendly, funny and helpful. Nice folks. Bonus points for being reasonably priced smack in the middle of a bar district. Oh and kids: smoking kills. Don't even start, because it's a bitch to quit.
google avatar

Jess J.

Yelp
I don't smoke. I especially don't smoke cigars. I don't even LIKE cigars. So, why, pray tell, do I even review Fidel's, let along give it four stars? To put it simply, having been in there with people who don't share my personal stance on tobacco, it's a nicely run, classy joint. The staff who work there are so nice and knowledgeable, the atmosphere is lovely, and it's just an interesting place. I was last in there on the same day as the Kentucky Derby, and it was kinda fun to chill on leather chairs in the back (nicely ventilated, for my delicate Scarlett O'Hara sensibilities, hah) while my companion puffed on a celebratory stogie after a minor triumph at work, watching the race day festivities, and enjoying the other patrons, cool and classy dudes and ladies. If a smoke shop can get four stars out of a gal past whose lips tobacco vapors have ne'er once passed, you know it's gotta be pretty decent.
google avatar

Robert R.

Yelp
A reliable cigar shop with a friendly and knowledgeable staff. Since they are in the heart of Westport I can't go to a bar without stopping there first. Their prices are moderate to high, but its to be expected, because of their location. I'm also willing to pay a little more for the great customer service. The humidor is well maintained and I've never had a bad cigar from there. They have a newly renovated lounge which is great for rainy days or during the winter. If its a nice day I recommend getting a cigar and going next door to Harry's where you can enjoy your smoke outside.
google avatar

Jake C.

Yelp
I picked up a new pipe last week, and realized I had nothing to put in it. A quick search on Yelp later, and I found myself in front of Fidel's. You can SMELL the tobacco from outside, which is not a bad thing. this place is almost wall to wall cigars. Unfortunately, I was there for pipe tobacco, so a cigar review will have to come later. As for their loose tobacco, I was motioned to 8-10 large jars in the back by their smoking area (which is quite nice, though small). They have a selection of house blends in large jars, as well as an assortment of tins from different companies. I went for the house blends. The first thing I stuck my nose in was the Blackstone cherry. Amazing. It smells (and to a point, tastes) like cherry cola. Among the over flavors are some chocolate and truffle, as well as some nice smooth dark blends. I picked up an ounce of the Blackstone Cherry and the Estate blend. So far, everyone to try the cherry has loved it. Truly a great smoke. The Estate has a nice smoke plume to it, and a rich dark tobacco flavor. I'll definitely be coming back here when it's time to refill. Aside from that, they have the obligatory selection of cigar cutters and punches, pipes, humidors, etc. Oh, and their prices were very reasonable. I paid under $4 for each ounce of tobacco I purchased.

Kevin E.

Yelp
Great shop, good selection, cool part of town. Friendly staff. They have a roomy lounge, well appointed. The cigar selection is heavy on the boutique brands, lots to pick from. I went with the Cavatina 2016 from Emilio and I wasn't disappointed. If your in town be sure to check this shop out. You won't be sorry.

Yelp
Great collection. Nice service. Plenty of indoor seating. Got the Aging Room Bin #1 at just under $16. Great, great cigar.

Yelp
Do you like cigars? Then this is for you. Do you not like excessive smoke in your general vicinity? Then this is not for you. Obviously a cigar shop is where people go to smoke some cigars and enjoy a laid back time. However, the best part of Fidel's is that you can bring your own drink along with you. They have a fridge to keep your drink of choice cold and can even provide you cups, if needed. The leather chairs there are some of the most comfortable chairs my rear end has ever had the pleasure of using as well. If you're in Westport and just need to get some regular cigs for your night out, they can help you with that too. Overall, this is one of my favorite places to spend time in Westport.
google avatar

Diana C.

Yelp
Walked into Fidel's looking to buy a few cigars for a friend's birthday. I know nothing about cigars, but the staff was so helpful in explaining the flavors by comparing the cigars to dark beers and so on. They made some great recommendations as well. Prices seemed reasonable and I'd definitely go back.

Tim R.

Yelp
Neat cigar shop with a large variety. Nice lounge in back with a diverse polite group of folks when we was there. Seemed to be a place that locals visited often.

Yelp
My party and I almost always end up here at least once during our quests of the Port. It's a great spot to grab smokes and cigars. They have a vanilla cigarillo that is to die for! The staff is always helpful and friendly. As for the prices, I'm not sure how or where to compare them too. However, for a couple of those delish vanilla delights, it ends up around $6.

Yelp
Was taken care of! They recommended a Romeo n Julieta Aging Room (Small Batch)...very good cigar! Will hit this spot again!

Yelp
Nice selection, friendly staff, nice place to relax and enjoy a cigar. Wish I had a place like this at home.

Yelp
I searched for years for a "cigar home" in Kansas City. There are many good shops in KC, but nothing really felt right. Two years ago I walked into Fidel's and started a conversation with the owner, Tom. I haven't spent a dollar in another KC cigar shop since. The selection is good and Tom is always working to make it better. The prices are as good as anywhere I've been and there are good deals at the event. The events are a blast. There are humidors that can be rented very reasonably. Most importantly, as a regular, you feel like family. I have made life-long friends at Fidel's and Tom works to make sure the environment facilitates that kind of personal interaction. Truly a gem.

Yelp
Love this place always good suggestions for cigars! The staff is friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere leans towards an older time... When things weren't as rushed, and you got to know your customers. Fidel's has a massive selection to suit most needs, and is knowledgeable about everything they carry. They take great care of their customers!

Yelp
Best cigar shop in KC. Great boutique selection with an attention to detail by the staff, plus competitive prices compared to others. I explained the type of cigar i qas looking for and they provided several options in various price ranges. I would drive the extra time to purchase here every time.

Yelp
Ever since the remodel, the level of this place has gone of the charts! They went from be 153rd of my top 500 locations in KCM to "pinch one off" all the way to #1 in Westport. Great work guys keep it up! They also sell cigars!

Yelp
I have looked into a bunch of the cigar shops in Kansas City and I have to say this is my favorite. They have the knowledgable and friendly staff working here who are more than willing to point you in the right direction if you have any questions or need any suggestions.

Yelp
I recently walked into Fidel's looking for an e-cigarette for my mother , a cigarette smoker of almost 60 years. I will admit I was a skeptic about e-cigarettes, but after a long and very informative conversation with one of the stores salesman, I decided to purchase the Cig2Go brand. It has now been almost 6 weeks and my mom loves her Cig2Go e-cigarette. I am so pleased that she is done (for good!) with cigarettes and all of their tar and carcinogens, which are not found in the Cig2Go. I would highly recommend Fidel's for helping me find a great product at a great price. Thanks, Fidel's, for helping not only me, but also my mom rid her reliance on cigarettes.

Yelp
Friendly staff but overpriced. Always nice to stop in and look around at the new stuff they have.
