Mérida, Mexico, Is a Favorite Travel Destination Among Locals — How to Visit

"Perched on an iconic corner, I appreciated Fiesta Americana Mérida for its classic five-star amenities and its prominent location at Paseo de Montejo and Colón, which gives it a grand, central feel on Mérida's most famous boulevard." - Meagan Drillinger Meagan Drillinger Meagan Drillinger left New York City for a life on the road. Do not bother staying here! The worst service I have ever experienced at a hotel. We booked the presidential suite for one week. The suite came with a kitchen that is completely empty. The nespresso machine came with 3 pods and instead of refilling daily like almost every single hotel would, they asked us to pay additionally for each pod of coffee! 3 pods for an entire week for a suite that sleeps 6 people and costs 25,000MXN pesos per night. The pool is extremely dated and the pool “bar” is a plastic bin with wheels. This is what you expect from a one star motel, not a 4 star “luxury” hotel. Do yourself a favor and stay at one of the many boutique hotels in the center. They have incredible service, amazing food, brand new rooms, showers and feel much more luxurious for the same price or even less than what you would pay here.

Fiesta Americana, Merida, offered us the most perfect vacations. We stayed for seven days. It was our first trip to Merida and the hotel we stayed in is a large portion of the trip having been an extremely pleasant experience. The personnel in the hotel could not have been nicer and attentive. They tried to accommodate to all of our demands. The hotel itself is imposing and magnificent as structure and as decor. The room was large and offered everything one needs for an enjoyable stay. The room was very clean and whatever we needed was provided. The bed was perfect, and the linen very soft. One of the worries we have about big hotels is noise, but that is not the case of Fiesta Americana, Merida, at all. Despite being a very large hotel and having a mall under it, the only sound we heard from our room was birds singing in the morning. I was very satisfied. We had access to the pool, and, even during winter, it was a great opportunity. We normally do not frequent hotel pools, but they made it so easy to use it, that we finish going to the pool every day in the afternoon. The hotel is very well placed. It is not in downtown (what is a plus), but very well connected to the historic center. A 20-30-minute walk by the most pleasant boulevard in Merida (Paseo Montejo) links the hotel to downtown. Furthermore, it is also linked to all part of town through the Meridan bus system (va y ven). After visiting all attractions in downtown, however, one only needs to leave the hotel area if one wishes. There are all kinds of good restaurants and coffee shops around. In Paseo 60, just one block from the hotel, you even find a bus to the airport (part of the va y ven system). Had we known, that is how we would have gotten from the airport to the hotel. Of course, Taxis are not expensive in Merida, and the Hotel has a list of prices for most places in Merida. They will help you with taxis, which are always available in front of the hotel. I cannot stress more, how pleased we are with Fiesta Americana, Merida. It helped us to discover a new great destination for winter time in the US, and we plan to be back next winter holiday time.

This hotel is one of the worst I ever had. The rooms are depressingly dark and dated. On the Reception floor, there are roaches in the bathroom - not sure about my actual room yet (let’s wait for the dark hours ;-)). ||But the worst thing are their attitude towards guests and severe noise problems. ||I had called them before my Reservation to find out what I need to do to get a quiet room as I had read in the reviews that there might be noise problems and as I am a very shallow sleeper. They did advise me not to book a master suite as those are mainly going to the street, I should go for a Junior suite and ask for an “internal view”. So I did. I did write them again about this and did even call them five days before arrival to remember them about it. And at Check In I was telling them again that I need a very quiet room. All the time they were assuring me that I would have “internal view” and that this would fill my needs for a quiet night sleep. |And in fact, I got a room with view of the pool. At first they wanted to give me one at ice level with the kids running around at the pool. Some might see this and easy access to the pool. For me, it’s a severe lack of privacy if anybody can run directly in front of my window. They did agree to give me a room on the second floor then.. ||But guess what? In front of the very thin and badly isolated windows of my rooms is such a loud noise of some AC aggregates that I at first thought, it’s a super noisy construction site. It was completely out of my imagination that their own technique would generate a noise hell for guests.||When I did call and tell them about the problem, they knew immediately what it was. So they for sure get a serious amount of complaints about that. But hey - why to invest in some modern technique not bringing 70 db in front of the guest rooms, if you can just keep running down your Hotel as welll? |Of course they did not have a room to change to - which makes logical that the guy on the phone who promised to get back to me after speaking to his supervisor just had me hanging on for several minutes to never come back in the line…

Hotel is outdated, but the worst thing is the noise. It is surrounded by loud streets and if you hope to evade the noise by having a room oriented to the courtyard, you are damn wrong. They have terribly loud installation of aggregates for their air conditioning. And they have built it so stupidly that the noise is going against the wall and thrown back inside the complete courtyard. Even we closed windows it always sounds as if you would have a vacuum cleaner next to your bed. And the really worst thing is that I had asked about the quiet room upfront I had made it even before Booking very clear that I am a shallow sleeper and that I only want to come if they have a quiet room. And they told me that I should’ve just booked a suite with internal view and I would be fine. Of course I was not. So it’s one thing to have a hell of noise and do not use technical possibilities to not spill all your courtyard with the noise of your air-conditioning. But it’s another thing to lie about it. At least in the bathrooms at Reception level I did observe roaches. As it is a very urban environment, this is avoidable with proper care and cleanliness. In addition, I had called them informing them about the flight cancellation and asked for a change of my reservation which day at first said they would gladly do. And when I came there, they said it needs to be done via a trip. And went ripped did send them a respective request they did just decline it.So dishonesty is written big in this hotel. I suggest to definitely avoid it.

it makes me sad that everyone leaving these reviews accepts mediocrity.. and that’s putting it nicely. the main entrance of this hotel welcomes you with a chilis restaurant as you step into run down mall of sorts. its run down, humid, and really wouldn’t require much if they put slightly more effort and pride into this hotel. maybe she was at her prime 20 years ago, but man what a disappointment. there is a reason people stay at the boutique houses or airbnbs, there is NO reason for anyone to stay here. my first night we had to move rooms: ac was not working & noise from restaurant next door on a SUNDAY was going on till 12am. second night in our new rooms: cockroach right next to me (on the 4th floor) and my dad’s room had no water. what is going on here?? this is not the standard for people who spend money to go on vacation. they do not keep this place clean, the rooms are dated, dirty & moldy, and this place just has such an off vibe to it. do better, it’s embarrassing. it’s 1:20am, i can’t even shower the sense of ROACH off me.. and i wanna go home.

Google
We saw a beautiful concert of Sinatra music at the bar...Merida Big Band w guest singer. It was 80min. The atmosphere/ ambiance of this area w its high ceings / arched bar / comfy seats was an excellent venue...the hotel is attached to a high-end mall...the location is on the edge of downtown

Google
I give this 3 stars mainly because of the rigid service. I requested an early check-in (just 2 hours) because it was my actual wedding day, and they wanted to charge me 2,000 pesos for it. For a hotel of this category, I expected a bit more understanding. The rooms were standard—nothing special. We paid for the breakfast inclusion, but honestly, the food was just 'ok' and the buffet area felt antiquated and uncomfortably hot, like the AC wasn't working properly.

Google
Nice hotel, very expensive, at $350 USD per night the hotel charges for morning room coffee pods $4 per pod. It's a nice place but on the average one would need more than $500 per day for full board accommodation.

Yelp
Clean rooms, There were urns of excellent coffee on offer every morning with cookies or fresh apples. I'm still craving that coffee and it's been two months. The rooms are stocked with an abundance of towels and products. Oh, and I was surprised to discover that there were enough hangers. I enjoyed the chicken pibil in the fancy restaurant and the line soup. The pibil exceeded my expectation with a perfect balance of spices and the pickled onions. The other restaurant serves a breakfast buffet which was not something I chose to indulge in a second time. The staff are what makes this hotel worthwhile. The front desk and housekeeping staff are simply the sweetest and most industrious group of people i've encountered in years. We chose a room overlooking the courtyard since I'm not a night owl. If you choose to face the city, be prepared to hear music and conversations late into the night. The entry level houses a small mall where you can find touristy goods like, clothes and jewelry. There's a Chili's restaurant on the ground floor but why? You can walk around the city and find delicious food at high and low prices. You can find beautiful hand crafted items to take home or adorn yourself with in town. But you have to be willing to venture out. We spent 13 nights at the Fiesta Americana. Overall, I would say it was reasonably priced with great service. One star removed due to the lack of a qualified and knowledgeable concierge and because the breakfast bit was an overpriced disappointment.

Yelp
The lobby is gorgeous and staff are very friendly. However the rooms are dated and the 5th floor breakfast are is too small and service is slow.

Yelp
Liked the buffet at the Fiesta Americana. We were staying at the Hyatt but enjoyed the food and service at the Fiesta Americana better.

Yelp
This hotel is nice, but the service is really bad. I do not recommend it at all! I went to have some breakfast with my husband and our service was HORRIBLE! We had to wait 40 minutes for a table the 2 hostesses forgot to call us. As soon as I sat down I placed my order 3 egg whites. After 35 min wait I left the restaurant without having breakfast! They never brought it! Very bad customer service. The people that work here doesn't respect the time of their consumers.

Yelp
Excellent service, location, accommodations, and amenities. We visited Merida for a month in February, reserving an Airbnb, but that didn't work out, so after a week we searched for place that could accommodate us on such short notice. After several days of online searching and visiting all the hotels in the area around the Paseo de Montejo we ended up at the Fiesta Americana, and boy, are we glad that we did! We chose a junior suite, and the hotel discounted the price because we were staying for 20 nights. Included in the price, along with access to gym and pool, was breakfast and dinner in the 5th floor Fiesta Awards lounge. The food was plentiful and delicious. The staff, everyone from the front desk, concierge, security, all the way to the ladies that cleaned every day, were friendly and helpful. The rooms were very clean, the towels were large and plentiful, the bed large and super comfortable, and even though our 2nd floor suite faced Avenue Colon and all the traffic, it was quiet. It helps that the hotel is set high above street level on top of a mall. The location was perfect for shopping or renting a car (there are 10 in the mall from which to choose), walking along the Paseo de Montejo enjoying the sights, enjoying multiple restaurants and cafes, and walking to the downtown area. The hotel is a popular place to hold conferences; there were several during our stay. Parking in the underground garage is free for guests. We highly recommend the Fiesta Americana and have no doubt we would stay there again in the future.

Yelp
Conveniently located near shopping, restaurants and transportation. CNN in English. Several restaurants, pool and hot tub. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. There is not a huge difference in price from some nearby hotels but the difference is worth it. Rooms have a safe, mini-bar, nice soaps and shampoo. All the little amenities add up to a great stay in Merida.

Yelp
It's our first time saying here. We have a suite facing the pool and we love it. We've eaten at two of the restaurants and love that too. Our room is really comfortable! Only thing is the air conditioner works ok. Not great. Not bad. High ceilings and big room with big windows probably doesn't help. I understand these things and thats why my review isn't less stars. There's is a lot of charm here. The people that work here have all been very kind. Definitely a place we would stay away ! Thankfully we have another few nights here

Yelp
Got a day pass to the spa for a friend and I. From the beginning there was missing parts of the ceiling with dirty dripping water on to the looker and changing area from some kind of filter. Picture included. Then there were constant children screaming, splashing, and jumping in the jacuzzi... supposed to be a spa and quiet zone. Then after the cleaning guy interrupted us in the sauna to clean and turning off the steam room to clean before we even had a chance to go in. There was a dirty razor on the floor of the showers. Mind you this is after he cleaned the area. How unsanitary is a dirty razor?? There was also no conditioner. In this spa that costs a good mexican wage to go into for the day. Getting dressed with dirty water drops dripping on me. We decided to tell the spa operator and show her pictures. There was no accountability. She made up excuses and said we need to speak to the hotel check in staff. We went to them and told them the stories plus showed this guy the pictures. He told us to send the pictures to a email and thanks lol!!! A nice hotel as this claims to be internationally would have gotten a manager and we would have been apologized to while given the day money back plus giving us a free voucher to another day and possible dinner at the restaurant. Wow so poorly managed on top of falling apart. Save your money because it doesn't stop there...
