Disclaimer: I hate writing negative reviews. I do my very best to find the bright side of every dining experience and I tend to be a very easy critic. We don't dine out often, so when we do, it's a very exciting 'event' for us. But upon reflection, I felt it necessary to write this in hopes that ownership will re-evaluate their practices and improve the quality of their food. My wife and I along with two friends drove 30 minutes to dine Saturday early evening. We made a reservation, but upon arrival realized that it was unnecessary as several tables were available. While walking in, there were signs posted that they weren't serving brisket or wings. Later we would find out it was due to their main smoker malfunctioning. We had previously had brisket from their food truck which was delicious, so we were somewhat disappointed. However, we understand that stuff happens and decided to try out something else from the menu. The hostess and server additionally informed us of the issue but mentioned that they had beef ribs as a substitute. The menu was pretty typical for a BBQ joint and had a variety of options to choose from. They also had seasonal cocktails that we tried. The drinks ended up being one of the best parts of our experience.
Our server was prompt and very friendly. Someone in our party was given the wrong beer, but she brought out the correct one and apologized for the mistake. It ended up not being a big deal at all. The service really was great.
Since this was a BBQ place, all of us ordered the beef ribs with high hopes. They came with coleslaw and choice of a side. My wife and I ordered an additional side salad as well. When the side salad arrived, it consisted of a plate of iceberg lettuce and a couple slices of cucumber. That's it. Definitely not close to being worth the $5 price tag. However, the ranch and lemon vinaigrette were pretty tasty.
When our food arrived, we thought we were being given the wrong order. My plate was set on the table first and the portion size of my ribs was comically small. The server confirmed that this is what we ordered. Everyone else at the table received a much better portion size (at least double of what I was given). When we all looked at our ribs, they were blackened to the point of gristle. They were so dry that we all felt like gnawing cave-people. The dry rub had potential, but it wasn't enough to mask the fibrous, crunchy texture of the meat. I had to remove the rib membrane myself in order to find any meat that was somewhat edible. Most of us couldn't even eat them, unfortunately. Far and away the worst ribs any of us had ever had. The sides were cold and unremarkable. My wife offered the table a taste of her bacon green beans and everyone was quick to decline. Best part of the meal was the cornbread. The meals were $20 each.
For the two of us, our bill was over $100 which included the cost of 2 cocktails, 2 beers, and a 20% tip to our great server. $100 is a lot for our family, so it hurt more that the food was so poor.
I understand that businesses experience setbacks and can empathize that the smoker was broken, but our meals were not a suitable alternative. They should have not served us those ribs no matter what the circumstances were. We would've gladly ordered something else if we would have known better. Hopefully they can get back to their mainstays soon because they unfortunately won't last much longer if they continue to serve such low quality meals.
