On the Grid : Figaro's Garden

"I'm a sucker for businesses in otherwise residentially zoned areas, all tucked away and peaceful, waiting for you to stumble upon them during a stroll. Figaro's Garden, one such establishment, caters to everyone from the urban horticulturalist to the casual plant dude that just wants a splash of green on their desk. Their focus is on ecologically sound practices and even offer full educational services like workshops, pest identification, and potting for those of us whose thumbs might be less than green." - Asterios Moutsokapas

It's a small, beautiful and neighbourly garden shop that has many of what a passionate gardener needs. They have tropical and native plants, big and small, seeds, soil and soil treatment media, pots, gardening tools and more, all of which are affordable for what you are buying. I come here mainly to buy small pots and a few plants. The atmosphere is cozy, warm, welcoming, lovely and pleasant. The staff who works there are very helpful, welcoming and have a lot of knowledge regarding caring for plants and best gardening practices. They have a cat named Huey who doesn't mind being pet and makes the atmosphere even more pleasant. You can also email them questions about gardening, plants and problems with plants through their email on their website free of charge. I will definitely come back for plants, their services and of course Huey!

I attended a wreath-making workshop here, and it was a fantastic experience! It’s easy to follow, even for someone without much crafting experience. The wreath I made turned out beautifully. Elsa and Melissa, the instructors, were very helpful and made the whole process fun and engaging. I highly recommend this as a festive activity to get into the Christmas spirit. It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon!,

Update: Since discovering the noble fir from Figaro's last year, we returned to get a noble this year. Lovely pine scent and loving the shape. *Lookout for Huey, the resident cat. He would love a head and chin scratch. We bought our Christmas tree, a 8ft noble fir, there in mid-Dec 2023 and the needles are still doing pretty well today, about a month in. Makes it difficult to throw out this tree as it still looks great. Has a subtle pine scent. Great recommendation by Fiona (I hope I've recalled the name correctly). Love the variety and you can trust in the quality of plants at Figaro's. The staff members have been helpful in providing advice on plants. Also, check out the pots collection at the end of the store. They do have a range there depending on what you look for.

We had Figaro’s Garden design our front yard landscaping. Amazing attention to detail, beautifully curated plants and features. What an amazing crew! They were thoughtful, engaging and took such care. Come check out their amazing work at our house on east 7th between Commercial and Victoria. 7th Heaven indeed. Thank you Hartley and Team!

This place is the best garden centre in Vancouver. The staff are next level amazing. Even if you are a very amateur gardener with little to no green thumb like me, they provide so much detailed, easy to follow advice, it makes you excited about gardening. For the first time I have kept an indoor tropical plant happy and healthy. We just returned for some outdoor patio plants and once again the staff didn’t just sell us the plants for the money. They really want to help your plants thrive!

Super friendly people with a great selection of plans and flowers. While we don't have a dog ourselves, I loved that they allowed people to bring their dogs in and the shop cat seemed quite friendly. Great spot and will be back to better populate our garden.

Very cute little shop. Great selection of tropicals and exotic plants. Super friendly staff and pet friendly. Very cozy and approachable. We just missed the wine. Next time. We will be back.

Google
Best lil plant store in Vancouver area!! The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and helpful on identifying the perfect plant for all my needs and then how to care properly for them as well. Don’t be deceived the small storefront holds more plants than you could possibly ask for!! There’s an open area out back which is perfect to peruse through for a date or post coffee exploration. Cannot recommend enough! Though note I tried driving down to Seattle with a couple of the plants and border security confiscated them lol I didn’t know it was illegal to transport plants across the border. Hopefully that helps someone out moving forward haha

Yelp
Big fan of Figaro's! Connor is great, so pleasant and helpful. They have a fabulous selection of indoor and outdoor plants. They keep it well stocked for such a small space. The outdoor area is constantly replenished as things sell. They do points which add up to good discounts which help. They are on the pricier side but also have good sales such as the one right now, half off everything as they get ready to close shop for a bit. If you're looking for an indoor statement piece plant, this is the place to go. Hartley, the owner is wonderful.

Yelp
Figaro's Garden is a friendly, knowledgeable place to get a variety of houseplants and garden vegetables and bedding plants. Avoid the big chains and shop local, you'll see the difference.

Shirley V.

Yelp
This is the best garden shop in Vancouver. The staff are friendly and helpful and they have a great selection of plants. I took in my very crowded, unhappy jade plant on the Thanksgiving weekend and left it for Connor to transplant in a larger pot. They were closed the next day but Tuesday morning I received a call saying my plant was ready to be picked up. Wonderful service!!!

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. My partner and visited a few weeks ago and purchased five plants plus some fertilizer. We asked lots of questions about how to care for them to make sure that they were going to adjust well to their new surroundings. One of the pieces was an amazing black velvet elephant ear which I had to have even thought it wasn't at all what I came for. Unfortunately I should have left it there as it was infested with spider mites and finally died this morning. Now I have two other plants in my house that the mites have spread to (including one purchased from Figaro's which may have also been infected). Such a disappointing purchase. I wouldn't be surprised to get a plant in this condition from a big box store but to get one from such a well reviewed place was so disappointing.

Yelp
This place is awesome and locally owned. They have a great selection of tropical plants, succulents, cacti, and other house plants. I bought a very unique-looking mid-sized cactus for $40 (pretty reasonable). Service was incredibly friendly. Be sure to join their free membership to collect points to save on your future purchases. They are also willing to take your contact info down if they currently don't have something in stock and will advise when the next shipment arrives.

Yelp
I came for the cat, Wilbur. Was happy to see the cat. I also wanted to get some small plants and was happy with the selection. The staff were very kind and knowledgeable and helped me. Will come back .

Yelp
Super friendly staff that work here. Wonderful neighbourhood garden centre with lots of variety.

Yelp
AMAZING!!! Went in to get some advice for my somewhat browning fiddle leaf tree (that we recently bought some where else). Chrissy was sooo helpful! Loved their selection and so thankful for her advice on caring for the plants. Definitely recommend this store!!

Yelp
This place feels good. Ive wanted to stop in many times, its just not been on the agenda. Knowledgeable staff that are helpful and pleasant. This gem is hiden away on a side street close to the busy traffic of 1 st ave and Broadway. Specialty plants are no problem. They have their own rewards points. And a 10 % off with a check in. Highly recommended--Give them a look and see.

Yelp
In a time not to long ago in a place not too far away, I lived on a farm. Yes, I am a farmer's daughter (save your jokes for later, please). My summers were spent begging my dad to try driving the tractor (to this day, I still never have), gathering fresh veggies from the garden with my mum (nothing tastes like a garden carrot rinsed with water from the hose), planting seeds and watching them grow with my gran, collecting freckles while watching my grandpa and dad fix this machine or that. Later in life, that connection to my food followed me to what I thought would be my career -- I became a cook. I had dreams of my own garden, my own kitchen, my own space to feed my friends (and, for the record, every mouth that tasted my food would automatically become a friend). Fast forward X number of years and I am no longer on the fast track to becoming a chef, but am on my way back to the space I once imagined my future to hold. The tipping point on the decision to sign my current lease was a scraggly rooftop garden plot. All for me. I now have the ability to grow my own veggies. Enter Figaro's. An enchanting and intimate garden centre offering gorgeous vegetable starters, seeds, and an abundance of information -- all in an incredibly magical little shop. The staff are more than helpful with tips on what to grow when, and how much space each little plant will need. Also, bonus: most of the starters here have been organically grown on Figaro's farm on Galiano Island. How much more local can you get? So here I am, growing my own food, supporting our own economy, and kind of almost living the dream I once had years ago... all thanks in part to Figaro's.

Yelp
Figaro's Garden is one of my happy places. The staff knows what they are talking about and they have a nice selection of common plants and a cool section of the rarer varieties.

Yelp
Such an amazing little neighborhood shop. Today was my first visit, but I had been looking around all over for a particular succulent (string of pearls) and had a feeling I would find it here. And I did!! For outdoor gardens there is plenty to see on the side and around the back. I also saw a ton of great plant pots. Succulent moms will know what I'm talking about - pots that are cute and stylish, AND have a drainage hole and saucer to catch excess water. The shop had so many great options in all sizes. I picked up several to make mini arrangements for gifts.

Yelp
Great little garden centre in the Victoria Drive neighbourhood. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff and lots of varieties of indoor and outdoor plants.

Yelp
Yes, this place is adorable ... but just like last year, I struggle with a lack of gardening helpfulness at these small shops and I encounter a bit more gardening attitude than I would prefer. Case in point ... I called a few weeks ago and asked when they were getting their seedlings in ... they said the end of the month ... it's the end of the month, so I make a special trip ... and they don't have a lot yet and they don't know when the rest is coming. And, they tell me, with condescension, that it might freeze still - which is true, but that's my risk to consciously take if I want ... and I want to take that risk. I am a risk-taker! Really, really! I will not blame you if my plants turn into popsicles! I will just buy more plants from you! It's in your best interest! And, then, they repeatedly try to get me to start from seeds. You know, if I wanted to start from seeds I'd have bought online and I'd have started them already. And, come on, really ... I've explained that I live downtown ... you think I've got the space to start seeds indoors like you're suggesting? Really? But, when I call Home Depot (granted, after battling the phone tree to get to the garden center) they tell me to the week when things are due to arrive, and when I go, I can't get the grannies from Richmond to *stop* talking about the particular joys and challenges of growing lettuce in Vancouver. That's all I want, some fresh lettuce, growing on my porch with a few heirloom tomatoes... why is that so hard?

Brianna S.

Yelp
Really enjoy every visit here. The staff are knowledgeable, approachable and friendly. They give great advice if needed but also leave you to enjoy all they have. It's small but they still have a great selection to choose from. I appreciate their customer loyalty program as well.

Yelp
I need them... my thumb is brown. So I was driving by on my way to grocery shopping on the Drive when I thought... instead of buying a bunch of mint, I should get a plant. Oddly enough, this place was empty. I kind of thought they were closed... the lady behind the counter looked very lonesome... I ended up getting my mint plant for 50% off because they are having a sale. A plant for $2.23, SOLD! I also feel a little less bad since I know this plant is probably just going to die anyhow. As I was paying for my mojito mint, I was given some great hints by the workerbee. She told me to pinch if off at something or other and it would become bushier... she also told me that you have to pinch off the flowers. Mint has flowers? This poor plant is going to die...

Yelp
Stopped in here in search of a specific plant to bring home to Calgary. I did ask a few questions about which ones would do well in the dry climate. One guy did give me some suggestions and did warn me about one that wasn't meant to be in drier climates that I was interested in buying. I ended up buying 2 smaller plants anyway. It's a smaller shop with a moderate variety though they're very well taken care of.

Yelp
Beautiful little shop here, the place is well organized and very cute inside. There are a lot of plants and the front clerk was helpful and very courteous. We enjoyed the space there is a lot to see, pretty decent prices as well.

Yelp
Lots of cute plants for your garden - whether inside or outside. The staff are knowledgeable. I was asking about succulents for my new terrariums, and they told me that succulents aren't that ideal for terrariums, and that air plants were more suitable. My fault for not doing some research prior to buying, but I'm glad they told me before I made the wrong purchase! I would have ended up killing the succulents! They sell organic seeds. Their prices are a bit higher, but you're getting good quality for them.
google avatar

Kieren E.

Yelp
We stopped in today so my wife could pick up some stuff to make a terrarium. Aside from the fact they have the world's largest/most adorable cat, these people are lovely! They gave us lots of good advice and didn't try and sell us on anything. They have some really cool things in here too and some stuff that would make good gifts. Highly recommend!

Zita P.

Yelp
Very cozy little plant store - don't be fooled by the tight space though! They're fully loaded on fantastic, highly sought after tropicals and perennials. Staff are great and very knowledgeable. My last purchase was a little dry and wilted, but I think this is due their supplier and not Figaro's. My previous purchases are all thriving and bountiful!

Yelp
I found this place completely by accidentally. In fact the best discoveries are the ones that I make while getting lost and this place was one of them. It's a bit hidden away in an unassuming residential area. It's a very nice and homely plant and garden store that makes anyone coming from a rainy day like this feel more sunny inside. Great customer service.

Hardev S.

Yelp
Figaros staff is knowledgeable and courteous. Chrissy was especially helpful. The store has a variety of cool things to look at let alone buy.

Yelp
Oh the magic of Figaro's Garden. I must admit I don't actually come here for the plants. Well I think I have bought a few for gifts, but that is all. I come here in December when the shop changes overnight into a Christmas paradise. They decorate it so beautifully and as soon as I walk by and look through the window I am filled with the Christmas spirit. Once I'm inside I have to be careful not to spend too much money. They have an amazing assortment of high quality Christmas decorations from German blown glass ornaments, wreaths, local lights, and solid cast iron tree stands. You can even buy your tree here if you go around back. After Christmas I always make sure to drop by an check out the sale.

Yelp
Such a cute shop. It looks small from the outside, but it's packed full of beautiful plants. Good selection of herbs and loads of help. I was having trouble with pests in my garden and these guys helped me out. They also carry unusual plants, which is a bonus. Easy to park.

Mark H.

Yelp
Sad, yes I agree with you Jasmine, that's how I feel each time I visit. Figaros once was a jewel box of a boutique garden centre. Today I thought "let's see if it's gotten any better", so I checked their website for their hours, drove over there and they are closed. A woman came around from the back carrying soil and said "Oh yeah, we're on Winter hours now. "Your website says otherwise" say I. "sorry" says she...me too! So if you do decide to throw the dice and go to Figaros don't be surprised if you leave feeling disappointed and a little sad, especially if you remember how it used to be. I won't waste my time again.

Kmk H.

Yelp
Definitely a good place to drop by from time to time. Well organized, staffs very friendly and they can also note down the plants you are looking for and contact you whenever they receive them.
google avatar

Sharon Y.

Yelp
I love this little garden store. They have veggie and flower starters that the big guys don't have. You have to pay more - no question - but it's not a lot more and the plants are in much better shape than at Home Depot/Choices/Superstore etc. etc. I feel the stress levels going down just being in the place.

Zachary O.

Yelp
One of my favourite plant stores. Weekdays aren't that busy however weekends can be quite busy. They have a lot of supplies from succulents, ferns, seasonal plants, and other gardening materials. You can easily walk in to find a single plant but walk out with more than you thought. The lady who is usually their is super nice and kind. Favourite plant store in Vancouver.

Teamworks H.

Yelp
We had Figaro's help us with our planters at our clinic and couldn't be happier with Hartley and his staff. They were very efficient and knowledgeable. Chrissy came to us, provided a site assessment and she and Hartley recommended plant options best suited for us and our space. Upon installation, the old plants were removed, new plants put in place and everything left looking immaculate. We would highly recommend them for all your home and office gardening needs!

Yelp
Awesome store with knowledgeable staff. Got some lovely air plants, I love them!
