It is a known fact that the island of Filfla was used as target practice by air and naval forces, and was much larger in size than it is today, which measures at around 2.5 hectares.
Question is: did Filfla really have its own fort, lighthouse, monastery, and chapel, as depicted in an extremely rare and old map found in the Bavarian State Library in Munich? That may be a bit far-fetched, however, geological studies conducted in the 1960s found the presence of caves that may have housed a small chapel, giving refuge to stranded fishermen.
Nowadays the islet of Filfla is a designated nature reserve, and home to several endemic plant and animal species.
Onsite visits are strictly prohibited.
