On the Grid : Filmcasino

"Filmcasino is one of the oldest cinemas in Vienna, which was established in 1911. Located on the famous Maragetenstraße, you can find the place easily by night, as there is a huge neon sign above the theatre. Get ready to take a step back in time: the charming furniture and interior design is still original and well preserved. The small cinema only shows selected (independent) movies." - Catherine Hazotte

Came for the very first time to watch spirited away, I liked the ambience except ventilation here is awful, I would say ignore at all costs during summer because you will be seated around smelly and sweaty people… (and I’m not exaggerating at ALL) other than beautiful cinema that offers some unique movies to watch.

Watched an anime film in one of Vienna's oldest cinemas. Such a charming experience. Look out for their schedules, they have a good selection of movies! There's a mini snack bar inside as well!

If you want a really classical old fashioned feel to the now modernised movie theatre I recommend visiting this cinema. It shows many different movies and one can really get lucky with something you've never seen before. Full of culture and full of the old-fashioned feel. This movie theatre is for those that enjoy these types of things. They sell snacks and drinks at there little shop which you can purchase to munch on during your film. PS: There's also a super cool esoteric shop down the road if this interests you :).

This is to give the general public a heads up, so only facts: (1) There is no popcorn. You can choose to buy some packaged stuff, from their concession stand, which measures about a meter and a half squared. (2) Tickets can be purchased using a credit/debit card, Apple-pay etc. However, the concession stand only accepts cash. Wow. (would have been nice know that before I bought a ticket). Best of luck to your business.

My son and I had a very pleasant experience at Filmcasino! It was a calm and mellow place with a vintage feel. We saw the 40th anniversary of E.T.: The Extraterrestrial and loved the feel of the old theatre paired with the smaller screen experience. It was like seeing it for the first time in the early 80s. Fantastic! The price for the tickets and snacks was also extremely reasonable and the staff were super awesome! Highly recommend. Oh, and this specific showing was in OV. A lot of films they show happen to be in English - a bonus for the English-Speaking crowd in Vienna or anyone wishing to see OV movies in their native language.

A small cinema that is popular for the alternative program it usually offers (as opposed to the mainstream). As such it attracts the younger audience and can get crowded at times (e.g. Kung-Fu movies full of fortune-cookie-wisdom).

Yelp
Filmcasino is one of the things which makes Vienna "Old but gold". The retro interior has not been changed and there are even old fashioned red curtains in front of the movie screen, pulled to the sides before the film starts. As for the only downside they don't offer freshly popped popcorn. However, you can get some from closed bags and the refreshment variety also includes good beers and wine - definately making up for the lack of cinema popcorn. P.s: Make sure to be there earlier to enjoy a drink and chat with other movie guests in the lobby!

Yelp
My neighborhood cinema is simply one of the coolest movie theatres in Vienna. Since there are no reviews on Yelp in English of this landmark establishment in Margareten, I will write one now. Today was a cool, rainy day in Vienna - a perfect day to go to the movies - and since I had no plans for the evening I stopped by the local Film Casino. The movie they were showing (this is not a multiplex) was awesome and really funny (A French film by a Portuguese director with German sub-titles), the seats are super comfortable, the concession stand is well-stocked, and the admission price is really fair. The interior design of the theatre is classic retro (except it's the real deal). This cinema both outside and inside looks like it stepped out of the fifties or at least what I imagine a movie theatre in the 1950s would have looked like. And the variety of films here is really diverse as are the film festivals they hold. This week is their "Slasher" film festival (in time for Halloween) .... and sometime they might have a French New Wave, or an American Gangster, or a Gay festival.... whatever. If you only feel comfortable seeing films in English, still check out the schedule because if the film is originally in the English language, they will show it in English with German sub-titles. Anyway, just go and enjoy a cool night out at the movies in Margareten!
