On the Grid : Kriterion

"Don't mistake Kriterion for a regular arthouse-cinema with a cozy café. This certaintly isn't your average place to watch a movie. Kriterion was founded in 1945 to enable students to finance their studies themselves. 70 years later this is still a non-hierarchical cinema run entirely by students. They offer a wide variety of genres, ranging from edgy arthouse to more accessible films. Their programming doesn't stop there, they also feature many different events, festivals and art expositions." - Soda Studio

Cute student run cafe + cinema opposite the University. Appropriately run down, sitting in the cafe is somewhere half between sitting in a fraternity bar and a student dorms. Tea and drinks are good, the crowd is deeply Gen-Z and a great spot to spot what’s hip amongst the youth. Progressive place with hip stickers and bathroom graffiti asking all of life’s big questions (who am I? What’s the difference between love and lust? Please call me Samantha etc) Perhaps less appropriate for bringing a date (unless also Gen-Z) or a business relation.

Tables looks empty, but if you sit somewhere you will be kicked out by someone smoking outside for a “short” time. Watching a preview of a movie you are going to see also doesn’t help for a good experience.

I respect the no laptop policy but please put some signs on the tables stating where you can and cannot sit with a laptop. It's only after you buy a drink and sit down that they tell you you can't work there... so you're stuck with your drink and nowhere to work. So much for an anti-capitalist establishment

Arrived to the cinema, nobody in the box office I had to look for someone to give me a ticket. Then I go to the theatre and and the movie starts 5 minutes late in German (they are playing off a bluray dvd player.) They then restart the device but cannot figure out how to change the language… the dvd player won’t work so it appears they switch to Netflix?? Im being completely serious as you see in picture and video provided. Eventually half an hour late they get the dvd working in English but the writing in the film is still and German and the English subtitles don’t fit on the screen. I hear the member of staff in the screening room behind scream ‘kanker’. This is a once in a lifetime cinema experience - I have never seen something so disorganised and ridiculous. I chose to just walk out and instead spend my evening in the sun. I can see the funny side of this but really as a paying customer it’s an absolute disgrace

One of my favourite places in amsterdam for more than 30 years now. The sneak previews are just a must do.

A cosy and affordable place that acts as a bar, cinema, and is possible to get food from as well. Quite a lot of students and young adults come here and is quite a central and convenient hang out spot. A good spot to chat and hangout, whether it’s a coffee during the day, some beers later on, or to watch a film
