Thank you, Filter, for reminding me why I love my coffee black. I used to support a five-cups-a-day habit, three for the caffeine boost and two for indulgence. I've been having trouble finding indulgence-worthy coffee, so when I found myself in the Foggy Bottom area, I decided to give Filter a try.
I tried the Kenyan pour over coffee, and my first sniff blew me away. Yes, "rich and creamy" is a scent, and the coffee captured it perfectly, even before my first sip. The friendly staff explained to me that the coffees are generally lighter as you go down the list, and the medium brew Kenyan was perfect for a mid-day pick-me-up. This was the first time that I've been wowed by a cup of coffee in years.
At 2pm, the ambiance was more like happy hour than your regular coffee joint. Most of the customers were suited up and on their mid-day coffee break, and the tall bar tables with no chairs did seem conducive to their goal of fostering an atmosphere where you can converse with your colleagues over a good cup of coffee, rather than camping out and catching up on emails.
The pour over coffee does seem to take a little bit of time, so keep that in mind if you're in a rush. And at $4.50 for a 12oz cup of coffee, I'm almost glad that Filter isn't closer to my usual stomping grounds, as I would surely be back on a very expensive five-cup-a-day habit if it was.
