I stopped off for Hot Cocoa ($6), then sat in the bright, lovely lobby in back to relax and enjoy my drink. There's also outdoor seating and tables for standing in front of the shop. Very nice staff.

Google
A fine tuned and focused coffee bar. I love to see they have Ceremony beans in hand, and a variety of options for pour overs. I got an espresso with an extra shot, which had all the smoothness and richness I love. Some seating options indoors, and some additional spots outside. Friendly staff and insightful recommendations.

All I can say is, if you’re a true coffee drinker this is the spot you gotta come to in DC. So often places get pour overs wrong, either has a burnt aftertaste, it’s rush brewed so too watery, ratio is off so its too bitter, etc, but not here at Filter Coffeehouse. They have an unbelievable lineup of coffees to try from different regions that all taste completely different from each other. If I lived in DC I’d honestly come here multiple times during the week. I also had the chance to speak with Rashid where he spent time explaining how they brew their coffee, tips for what I can change at home, and other places to visit while in town. It was such a fun experience being here, the entire staff is very passionate and great at what they do. I’m so happy I chose to come here. This was legit the best pour over I’ve ever had, it’s made to perfection with zero flaws. All the coffee was great, in particular the Kenyan one. Hope to visit again next time I’m in town!

Google
My benchmarking for coffee shops is always the espresso, and that’s the first thing I do every time I visit a new one. Filter’s espresso is delicious, and probably one of the bests in downtown DC. I’ll try to come back to taste other items on the menu. Nice interior design also.

Google
Better than a business district coffee place has any business being…! Same price range as the bigger chains, but much better coffee and preparation. I’ve always found the service very fun and friendly, too. I didn’t realize until a few visits in that there is also a seating area in the back. According to other reviews it has no wifi, but it looks like a nice place to read or meet someone. I’m grateful to have Filter near my office.

Scott Remley

Google
This is, without question, the best coffee in DC. Everyone else is playing for 2nd Place. It’s a gorgeous place, and the cold brew is magnificent. Quit dorking around with other places. You’ve found it.

Sunil Singh

Google
First time here. The place is within another office building. So there's not that much space to sit. We just have to find seating in the lobby area. I ordered a 8oz cappuccino (comes in one size) and asked it to be made extra hot. But it was not even close to hot. In fact, it was just a little more than warm.

Ian McGettigan

Google
Delicious coffee and beautiful spacious spaces to sit in the back. I believe it’s a shared space with another department or something, but it’s almost always empty. Great place for a coffee and chat. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Perfect place for an afternoon pick me up or a nice chat with a friend or colleague. I visit filter on a weekly basis and the employees are always very kind and the drinks are consistent. Id say you're not going to find a lot of unique syrup flavors and whatnot but they do the classics very well - like cappuccinos, cortados, drip coffee, teas, etc. Their pastries (like the pecan one) are delicious! I've also ordered filter coffee for catering for a work event and they were timely with preparing the order and even offered to help bring the coffee a few blocks away to the office, which was greatly appreciated.

Yelp
Popped into Filter Coffeehouse to try out a new place in Foggy and was pleasantly surprised by the experience! I got myself an Iced Americano with half and half with a splash of their house-made syrup. Very strong and tasty. The service was speedy on a busy day and the staff were extremely attentive! The ambiance is clean, spacious, and perfect for meeting with a colleague or getting work done. Great place to stop for a quick coffee or a WFH day!

Yelp
Great coffee shop, standing tables inside, some patio seats out. Their espresso is very good (one of the best in DC), but only open weekdays :/

Yelp
This is a great place for drip coffee lovers, but if you're into sweeter drinks you may resonate with me. I was excited to try Filter with all the great reviews but it was a little underwhelming for me. Based on the name they specialize in pour overs and French press. While I'm more of an espresso/latte fan, the reviews also mentioned they have good espresso too which is why we still checked it out. Some quick things I noticed, they only have oat and soy as milk alternatives and only have muscavado syrup you can add to your drink. There were some pastries available too. I got an iced mocha and added the muscavado syrup and my friend got a hot oak milk latte with the muscavado syrup. My mocha tasted a little bitter even after adding the syrup. When we ordered we were asked if it would be 'for here' or 'to go'. We decided 'for here' so my friend got her drink in a mug. Unfortunately there isn't much seating other than some standing tables in the area, but it's connected to a building so we found a table, but weren't sure if it was technically connected to the coffee shop. It's not an issue that some coffee shops are go to vibes only but if it's an option to have your drink in an actual mug I wished there were more seating options.

Michael P.

Yelp
Very attentive staff with a high quality product. Coffee is a tough business and they meet the highest quality and service standard setting themselves apart. Worth a longer walk to reach them, or stop in as you drive by.

Yelp
Roaster: Ceremony (Annapolis) Got a drip coffee. It was delicious, and better than most places in DC. Close to Farragut West metro. Ambiance is meh, but who cares?! Service was friendly. The coffee is stellar. This will be my go to shop because the drip is on point.
google avatar

Phoebe D.

Yelp
I've heard good things about the drip coffee but in terms of their latte I found it a bit disappointing. It wasn't bad, but at over $8 for a 16oz drink I would have expected it to be one of the best coffees I've tried in DC, which it definitely was not. The ambiance is also nothing special, with no seating in the cafe itself although I believe it is connected to a public space with tables and wifi.
google avatar

Casey Lyn B.

Yelp
Honestly, what grabbed my attention to try this spot is because this cafe encourages to talk to your neighbors, which is very unique and very true what we need to do nowadays. I ordered one of their "special"/pour over & french press coffee menu, the Kenya one. I highly recommend trying this menu because this coffee has such a unique flavor! No milk/creamer added, just black and the coffee was a sweet taste! HIGHLY recommend trying this cafe! I will definitely come back to try more of the "special" menu!

Yelp
The espresso here is awesome. My favorite coffee shop in DC with a friendly staff and amazing espresso (and flat whites).

Ananya B.

Yelp
Love their location and the in house drip coffee. The service is very good as well. Very close to GW and that's a perk!
google avatar

Annie S.

Yelp
I come here for client meetings and the coffee is always good. They have outdoor seating with a few tables of 2 (there are mosquitos in the summer) and indoor seating if you go further back behind the coffee shop. The shop itself doesn't have indoor seating. Staff is always super friendly and they have a rewards program.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious. Great service. Good atmosphere. Good selection Good feel to the place That's all I have to say but thus annoying Yelp app makes me put 85 characters. How's that Yelp ?
google avatar

Dani G.

Yelp
Probably my favorite coffee in the city right now! I love the Plain Oat Latte! But, whew they have an in-house brown sugar syrup and it's freaking delicious! Everytime I go, I ask what the name is and I always forget but- get it! The staff here- Incredible! They are always so nice and my lattes always have the most amazing art! Can't beat that! The coffee is strong but still subtle and smooth and creamy! A bit pricey, but "you gotta pay to play". Or pay for great coffee & experience in this case lol No seating inside anymore with the rise im cases. It's also in an office building so, not open in weekends or holidays.
google avatar

Michele M.

Yelp
Very strong coffee flavor but does not offer any flavoring syrups. The place is spacious but there is no seating due to COVID. The workers are very friendly.

Moughil N.

Yelp
The filter coffee was pretty solid. The coworking space that is attached to Filter Coffeehouse is very nice

Yelp
A friend and I came here this afternoon, and for me it was the very first time. The ambiance and interior design of the cafe is something different and uplifting! They have so many option that it was hard to choose the best coffee or drink option. Right off the bat, I noticed the brown sugar latte and it's something that I have definitely not tried before. My friend decided upon the regular iced coffee, and she mentioned that she's ordered t several times from this place. When we went inside there was a short line to place drink orders, but it moved quickly. The person working behind the counter was friendly and nice, and it took literally seconds to complete the drink order transaction. Finding a table so sit and chill was not so easy however, but we were able to locate a table within the side room. This area had no windows but it was fine. The brown sugar latte could now be one of my all-time favorites!
google avatar

Inna Z.

Yelp
It's a very cute coffee shop with few tables inside. It was hard to judge outside since they have construction going on. I ordered a latte. They wouldn't serve it in a mug unless you have a proof of vaccinations. All the workers were wearing masks. Latte was delicious with nice foam. It might of had nice design but it was destroyed when they put cover on it.
google avatar

Andrea A.

Yelp
Kind staff, quiet spot. Definitely for the coffee lover that may want a side of carbs (they have great muffins). They have some standing tables in the front for grab and go, and some tables around back if you'd like to sit and stay awhile. If you're looking for more than a pastry for breakfast, this may not be your vibe.
google avatar

C P.

Yelp
Definitely worth a visit if an incredible cup of coffee is your thing! Staff is very friendly and highly knowledgeable about the coffee they serve. You can tell when people are passionate about their craft and it's reflected in the quality of the coffee they serve. I don't come to DC often, but now I have my go-to coffeehouse whenever I am in town.

Angela T.

Yelp
Cutest little coffee shop with a clean and simple vibe. Friendly and accommodating staff
google avatar

Marie H.

Yelp
We tried a new coffee shop while visiting DC. They made pretty drinks but do not use any artificial sweeteners. Instead of a vanilla latte, we got a brown sugar latte. It wasn't want we were looking for but if you can handle a healthier coffee, you should try it. Great customer service!
google avatar

Kia G.

Yelp
Best coffee in DC. Get the large latte. It's pricey but unlike Starbucks or other chains, their espresso is *strong* and delicious. I used to go multiple times a week when I worked in the area. I definitely miss this place.
google avatar

Kate H.

Yelp
This is a nice spot in DuPont, though pretty small and relatively light on seating. It's one of the few coffee shops in the area that's not a huge chain, which is nice. And their options aren't too bad either, with all your classic coffee and espresso options. Only a few tea options, but the ones they have are decent. However, there's nothing super special about the spot or their menu. It's not the coziest place, and they don't have WiFi--there's even a snarky sign in the window about how you should enjoy your time there without internet. So, probably best for stopping and grabbing something to go.
google avatar

Rosie A.

Yelp
Amidst all the coffee spots in the DC Metro is this small gem. Following the tradition of espresso bars in Italy you'll find the standing room only high counters and tables in the service area. Upstairs are 5 small tables for two ... but you could squeeze 3 per setting if you utilize the bench space ;-) So, why am I a fan? I LOVE their Flat White! Check out the picture with their raisin danish ... which my friend are most of. I'm also a fan of the service the efficient staff provides - courteous and not pushy. The space is clean and well lit. Sitting there it was obvious there were regulars who stayed in and took away. So glad my friend recommended we meet there this morning!
google avatar

Josie L.

Yelp
Delicious and reliable coffee. Reasonably priced for DC, IMO. Clearly made by people who know their craft.
google avatar

Meryl J.

Yelp
Great coffee shop! Lots of seating options, but you do have to show your vaccine card to dine in. I ordered a cortado and it was made perfectly. Staff was helpful and friendly. Would come back!

Yelp
Hip little coffee shop near GW campus. This location does have a restroom, which is rare for the establishments in the area. The coffee I ordered had fruity notes and chocolate undertones. I picked one out from the seasonal menu that was under $4. The service is charming here. The barista offered to put my coffee in a to-go cup that I couldn't finish. You can stand and sip coffee at a bar, which I thought was reminiscent of cafes in Europe. You can also sit upstairs if you come with a party. Seems like a great on-the-go coffee shop or in my case, a great place for a pick-me-up in the event of rain. This location also has pastries, hot chocolate, and other types of crafted coffees. It's near an Indian restaurant and a few sight seeing spots in the likelihood you're commuting to see the monuments.

Nicholas G.

Yelp
Wasn't open when their sign indicated they would be on a Monday morning. Multiple people waiting outside for 10 minutes after opening time and no movement inside at all.
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
Located a few blocks from Foggy Bottom. Pretty decent coffee joint. Service is fast and the place is clean. I will say the downstairs is pretty small but they have an area upstairs where you can sit which is pretty cool. I got a regular coffee and a chocolate croissant. Definitely would like to come back if I'm in the area.
google avatar

Dani P.

Yelp
This Filter is much different from the original Filter in Dupont. It's brighter, with more vibrant design and decor. I can see why, since it caters to the professional demographic near GWU. I ordered a chai, and my husband a mocha. Both were excellent. I tend to get a chai as my default drink at every new coffee place I try, and this one was unique in that it had almost no sweetener at all. That may not be everyone's thing, but I loved it because I think most coffee places over sweeten their chai.
google avatar

Yelp
Not sure if it's the location in downtown bustling DC, but, this coffeehouse was not as nice as I'd hoped it would be. Given that they use nice coffee, I would expect the experience to mirror that. However, when I walked in, it just felt dingy and had a non-coffeehouse aroma, as though there was not much coffee brewing happening in the shop. It is convenient that their prices include tax. They have the traditional panoply of espresso and coffee drinks. They have an upstairs seating area and a downstairs standing area. They have soy milk for the espresso drinks. There's agave nectar by the fixings bar. Purchase some Ceremony brand coffee beans for later. Some paraphernalia is also available for promoting the coffeehouse or making your own coffee at home. Overall, it was not impressive, and I would rather not return.
google avatar

Harrison L.

Yelp
Filter is a bit cramped with lackluster design, but the coffee and location is hard to beat. The baristas are sweet and attentive, they grabbed my attention before I could figure out which books they had on the wall! As an average coffee drinker I've tried their iced coffee and ice latte on repeat since it's hard to go wrong with either in the summer. However I tried my first cortado here recently and I keep coming back for another one. The atmosphere isn't particularly suited for a sit-down (no-wifi policy), but it's great for a caffeine fix over some networking(or alone too). Prices on board are tax-included. The iced coffee did seem to be cold-brew though I could be wrong. Overall a convenient location and I highly recommend giving their cortado a shot! (pun mildly intended).

Yelp
This. Coffee. Was. So. Good. I'm kicking myself for not buying a bag. Get the Flat White. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Legit coffee house in the IMF building. Really good lattes, with art to boot. Nice medium roast with shots pulled on a sweet La Marzocco FB-80 with a custom paint job. Friendly baristas. What else do you need? No Wi-Fi. Talk to people, OK?
google avatar

Yelp
Reason for going: proximity to my job and based on previous good Yelp reviews Coffee shop: ambiance is pleasant, warm and welcoming. I believe there is an upstairs but I usually just stop in and grab a coffee on my walk to work. It's appears on the smaller side but again I've never went upstairs. Also the baristas are friendly and knowledge about all the coffee selections. Cost: cappuccino is about 3.50 (which is about average for the area - although it's a little smaller cup size) Quality: freshly grounded coffee beans Verdict: I really love this place. Every coffee drink is so good! I especially love the cappuccino but today I tried the drip coffee and it was strong, fresh and tasty! It's a small place but never disappoints. I will try their pour over coffee next! Do I recommend: definitely!
google avatar

Mohammad Sajjad H.

Yelp
A good spot for a quick coffee fix with a bit of style and aplomb. It's a bit tiny so can be slightly inconvenient to have a conversation cause it is so noisy. But traffic moves in and out pretty quickly Key sell is the location and the quick service.
google avatar

Aya T.

Yelp
I have come here a few times to work on my laptop before my office opens. Their upstairs seating area has quiet atmosphere compared with buzzling downstairs. Although their coffee is medium roast, I still can enjoy it (I prefer dark roast). Coffee and scone is my breakfast here. Stable Wi-Fi. They open as early as 7am. Perfect place to start my work day!
google avatar

Sara M.

Yelp
Filter was a lifesaver due to their convenient location and marvelous macchiatos. The staff are all friendly. The service is prompt, but without compromising quality. Definitely a nice way to start the morning.

Yelp
In a city where you can't walk one block within the downtown core without seeing a Starbucks, Filter is the rose among a garden full of weeds. An awesome coffeehouse with charm, character, an excellent staff, and excellent offerings! The staff at Filter are extremely friendly, knowledgeable about coffee, and very helpful. The customer service experience here is head and shoulders above most coffee shops I've been to in DC. This place gets packed in the mornings and in the late afternoons, but the lines move along quickly and you get to mingle with the wide array of folks that make their way to Filter from the IMF or World Bank. The pour over coffees are superb here, and if you're accustomed to that bitter, nasty crap from Howard Schultz's house of piss in a paper cup...Filter is definitely not for you. Wait the 5-10 minutes and you will be rewarded with a smokin' cup of awesomeness. This place is fantastic and I'm lucky it's right up the block from my office so I can get my mid-afternoon jolt on!
google avatar

Yujin M.

Yelp
Thank you, Filter, for reminding me why I love my coffee black. I used to support a five-cups-a-day habit, three for the caffeine boost and two for indulgence. I've been having trouble finding indulgence-worthy coffee, so when I found myself in the Foggy Bottom area, I decided to give Filter a try. I tried the Kenyan pour over coffee, and my first sniff blew me away. Yes, "rich and creamy" is a scent, and the coffee captured it perfectly, even before my first sip. The friendly staff explained to me that the coffees are generally lighter as you go down the list, and the medium brew Kenyan was perfect for a mid-day pick-me-up. This was the first time that I've been wowed by a cup of coffee in years. At 2pm, the ambiance was more like happy hour than your regular coffee joint. Most of the customers were suited up and on their mid-day coffee break, and the tall bar tables with no chairs did seem conducive to their goal of fostering an atmosphere where you can converse with your colleagues over a good cup of coffee, rather than camping out and catching up on emails. The pour over coffee does seem to take a little bit of time, so keep that in mind if you're in a rush. And at $4.50 for a 12oz cup of coffee, I'm almost glad that Filter isn't closer to my usual stomping grounds, as I would surely be back on a very expensive five-cup-a-day habit if it was.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place! So my friend who had just come back from traveling all summer said she would meet me downtown so we could try it out together. We walk in and the Jay Z is pumpin' (odd for a coffee shop, but whatever) and its two young guys working. One mopping and the other was the Barista. We had a few questions about the menu and how they got their start. A tip for Filter: Most people who love and sell good coffee or wine get really enthusiastic about the preparation process and describe the taste of it in a very exciting way. Their eyes get big or they may start talking with their hands. (It's called Passion) Not this dude in the Wu-Tang T-shirt mopping the steps. He didn't introduce himself or give us the Welcome to Filter Spiel...... instead he just looked at me like I was crazy. He finally mentioned something about the beans coming from Annapolis, but like with a --and who wants to know look-- written on his face. Then I asked him if they were affiliated with Filter Coffee in San Diego. At this point he looked at me, like Bishhhh Pleaze, snarled, and switched off with the mop. We were puzzled? Did I say something wrong?? Okay..... No warm fuzzies for you! So we make our selections. I got the the Sumatra Lingtong Wahana Estate, $3 for a 12oz cup they said it had hints of Chocolate and Black Currant. I'm not goin' lie, besides dealing with The Grumpy Mop Man, the Coffee Was Excellent I must admit I swallowed my pride on the first sip. They also have Ethiopian, Kenyan, Brazilian, Peruvian and other basic coffee bar classics like Cappuccinos and Americanos for $3. I will eventually be back, ultimately I would like to try every last specialty blend . As for The Grumpy Mop Man... for coffee blends this rare, I'll just wave him off, another snarl... I might drop something, JUsST SO HE'LL HAVE TO MOP IT UP 0) Joking..... (Maniacal Laugh) But seriously, they need to put him in the back somewhere.....

Yelp
LOVED this coffee shop! First of all- they had an excellent selection of Ceremony coffee, they were conveniently located in the city, and the baristas were INCREDIBLE. It took me a few tries to search around the D.C. area to find a decent coffee shop that serves Chemex & pour over options, and this one did not disappoint! The baristas were super friendly and answered every question I had. Also gave me a free nice bag to put my recently purchased mug in. Highly recommend this place for anybody that wants legit good coffee.

Yelp
I was in town for a conference and wanted to wake up fully before I had to work magic, so I fired up the Yelp app and it brought me here. Good thing for that. You know you have arrived at a good coffee destination when all the patrons are speaking something other than English. I hate to say it, but Americans don't know good coffee. Americans only get BIG and MORE, but not QUALITY. Am I racist? No, not really. I am American so I guess I can rag on my peoples. The coffee is legit. No burnt taste, doesn't compare to Blue Bottle, but def better than STARBUCKS. I can't say much for the decor, as hard as they try, but the ambiance is just blah. So pop in for an espresso, get your adrenaline going and hop out.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
I've gotten pour-over coffee from here before and was never that blown away by it. Always solid cups of coffee but nothing that noteworthy; until today, when I had a Columbia pour-over. Seldom am I able to actually taste the flavors listed in a coffee's description. But, when my coffee cooled down a bit, I could make out these beautifully rich and nutty, as well as smooth almost caramel-like notes. It was really delicious. I pretty much craved a second cup of it all day.
google avatar

Yelp
Soooooo glad i discovered this place and even more grateful are my taste buds who have been put on a on-and-off diet which makes them crave sugar even more! I intended to get my cappuccino but eying the 'coconut-vanilla tea' made me want something sweet (lifelong dilemma of a severe sweet tooth). Trying hard not to eye the pastries, I decided to try the delish sounding tea with steamed whole milk. Soooo glad I did because the aroma of coconut and vanilla made me forget about dessert and adding a tsp of raw sugar made up for the sweetness. The staff at this place always asks you what you want exactly and I love that since I was asked whether I would like my teabag in the tea or thrown away after pouring the steaming milk and tea drinkers know that over-steeping MAKES A WORLD OF A DIFFERENCE!

Yelp
Stand & sip downstairs, additional seating upstairs in loft area! From cortados to iced coffees and everything in between, this java joint serves up quality roasted beans in an urbanite environment! No laptops or wi-fi access available or encouraged, otherwise the experience would have been closer to five stars.
google avatar

Airik B.

Yelp
Solid solid solid! It's small so it would be a place to grab and go, but I did manage to find a table to sit with two others and catch up. The coffee was really good, so if in need and around, I'd def grab a cup here. You certainly won't hear any complaints from me about Filter. I almost bought a bag but considering I already have 4 bags of coffee at the house, it would be a but overkillish! But I'll be back for more!
google avatar

Yelp
Filter has awesome coffee - not over roasted and the cappuccini are my daily treat. Staff is super friendly and their chocolate muffins are the best, but the sell out quickly.

Yelp
Don't know what all the hype is about. This place is basically the Portlandia of coffee shops. Went in the other day at 9am, and it took 15 minutes to get a cup of coffee. Not an exaggeration, not some fancy pour-over justifying more time, and not including time I was in line. From the time I ordered a cup of regular coffee, it took 15 minutes to get it. I guess at Filter, 9am isn't peak coffee time where you'd want to have some ready. While waiting, I got to experience some other casual observations: - There is a lot of adherence to "traditional coffee culture". For instance, all the staff appeared to have just rolled out of bed...just like 8th century coffee makers, appearance and hygiene are not a priority. - Another aspect of traditional coffee culture I wasn't aware of: passive aggressive arguing with your co-worker about whose fault it was no one made coffee...in a coffee shop. - No laptop-wifi "rule"....just give us your money and GTFO. - Clientele who will complain about coffee not being in a ceramic mug because, "it's just not right otherwise". It makes me feel good when I meet someone who really understands priorities just like I do. - Books ostentatiously chosen...Cyclopedia, next to Kissinger's Diplomacy, carefully stacked behind the register. Just ask yourself, which book's primary audience is more likely to carry the other in show rather than genuine interest? Ironically, Filter is a lot like Planet Fitness: a business who's primary product is not actually the product sold, but rather the reinforcement of one's own sense of self-importance.
