Finca el Tossal, Near the Costa Blanca, Spain - Explore & Book

"A stone and terracotta villa with wrought-iron balconies, it looks like it’s been here for a century or more, but Thorsten and Sonia Herrmann built this place from scratch - everything, even the furniture. There was nothing here, says Thorsten, except goats, ruined farmhouses, a ledge of wooded hillside and a sensational view. They opened in 2005 with just one guest room. Today there are 9 luscious suites, plus a cool pool terrace, Jacuzzi and chill-out area, and an intimate dining room and bar. It’s a very personal space, drawing influences from the Herrmanns’ globe-trotting past: German-born, they have lived in Italy and California; Sonia was brought up in Spain. Their country retreat is a hybrid of Italianate villa and mini Moorish palace, set in a tranquil Spanish landscape where craggy mountains overlook a haze of coastal plains and a patchwork of lemon, almond and orange groves. In the gardens, trees cast pools of shade onto pristine lawns; you can smell the pines, and watch a light Mediterranean breeze ruffle the palms. Don’t be put off by the crowds who pour into nearby airports. Up here in the mountains, nature is the big draw. Opportunities for hiking, biking and fresh air open up a wild side to the Costa Blanca that tourists rarely see. You can see a glint of Benidorm in the distance, but you couldn’t be further away. Highs The wonderful views across mountains and valleys, down to the coast. You're high in the hills, surrounded by wonderful hiking and biking; there are mountain bikes to borrow The 9 Junior Suites are large and sunny with handmade four-poster bedsA relaxed house-party atmosphere - spiced up by the mix of nationalitiesFantastic set dinners on the terrace at sunset, served with a gentle evening breeze, candles on the tables, cocktails and Rioja Great value Lows It’s a bit out of the way so you'll need a car, and the access is steep via narrow lanesDinner is only available 5 nights a week (and no lunches) though there are restaurants in Bolulla, a 3km drive away No kids under 16 permitted (a high for some!)" - Lesley Gillilan

August 2025. Our 5 nights at Finca el Tossal were just what we needed to recharge our batteries. The peace and quiet and glorious weather allowed us to read our books, swim and relax – exactly what we had hoped for. Overall, the entire complex had character. Our room was absolutely divine, thankfully private with spectacular views. All the staff we encountered were extremely helpful, attentive to our needs and genuinely friendly. We enjoyed our conversations with everyone. Food was terrific – a wide variety of choices for breakfast; a more limited but satisfying choice for lunch we could order after breakfast if we were staying in; dinners were set on the charming balcony with sunset views. We were especially impressed by the dinners – every dinner brought something unique, while still catering for our dietary preferences. Compliments to the chef once again. We enjoyed a variety of interesting wines too. One day we went for a walk around the area to stretch our legs and explore; Another day we drove to beautiful Altea and enjoyed roaming the historic town centre and surrounds for a few hours. Finca el Tossal really was an enchanting escape. Our only comments to balance our gushing appreciation? We experienced midgets for the first time (a variation of mosquitoes) ... and the last 1-2 kilometres of the road to the destination is narrow and winding, so please drive slowly and carefully. Thank you to everyone there! You all contributed to making our stay so memorable.

Tucked away in the peaceful hills of Altea, this place is an absolute hidden gem. The setting is serene and the rooms are beautifully designed, blending simple, traditional charm with tasteful modern touches. The decor throughout is lovely, and the pool area is truly stunning—perfect for relaxing.||One of the highlights was dining on the open-air terrace each evening. The atmosphere was magical, and the food was delicious—a real treat every night. The staff were very friendly and helpful, adding to the warm and welcoming vibe.||If you're looking for something a little different, away from the busy tourist areas, this is the perfect escape. We genuinely didn’t want to leave!

I’ve came for my solo-trip to this place. I loved it. Great personnel, great place. Without car it’s difficult to go there but I knew that. Very tasty dinners! Totally recommend ❤️

We had a lovely stay at Finca El Tossal and truly enjoyed the stunning views, beautiful decor, and the warm friendliness and excellent service provided by the hosts. It’s a charming and peaceful retreat that’s perfect for unwinding. That said, there were a few aspects that could be improved. The road leading to the finca and the parking situation can be a bit challenging. Additionally, while the rooms are beautifully designed, the beds were quite firm, which may not suit everyone. The bathroom, though stylish, could be more practical. The raised step between the room and the bathroom, the sink faucet, and the lack of storage space make it less convenient than expected. Overall, it’s a great place to stay if you’re looking for a tranquil getaway with breathtaking views and fantastic hospitality, as long as you’re prepared for some minor inconveniences.

Lovely hotel in the middle of the orange plantations, close to Altea. The food was excellent, the personnel so very nice and genuinely friendly. Great atmosphere to relax.

Edit: We have since been back in June 25 for our wedding anniversary (some 14 months later)and things are just as good if not even better. Room 7 (King Suite) which was being renovated during our first visit was now complete and where we stayed. I think the owners of this hotel should be applauded as I think they have just about got everything perfect. The location: set high amongst this nispero plantations with long ranging views over the majestic mountains, countryside and to the distant Mediterranean. The Hotel: Rustic with a touch of class. Certainly not too formal that you feel you need to dress up. Relaxed is the vibe. Outdoor seating for the warmer months and cozy indoor restaurant when not. Lovely pool area with huge and hot jacuzzi. The room: loved it, 4 poster bed, stunning bathroom with feature bath and separate shower and twin sinks. Double doors leading to grass lawn with views (room 5). The food: we were at the hotel on a Sunday and Monday evening. On Sunday evening the Chef has the night off, however the food provided was of equal quality on either evening. We are slightly more difficult to accommodate being vegan, but this was zero issue to the owners and they produced, wonderful fresh tasty food on both evenings. The breakfast each morning offered a great choice along with fresh coffee and freshly made bread. The only tiny gripe I have is that there were no tea or coffee making facilities in the room itself, however quick trip to the bar was little issue. All of the staff we came into contact with were exceptionally friendly, chatty and knowledgeable. The owner showed us some of the new rooms that are being prepared for this season and it really is a place to look forward to go and stay. Highly recommended in every aspect.

Our 3rd time coming and never disappoints. Service, rooms and food are spectacular. A true getaway experience and no problems at all about the road.
