"From the street, Finn’s Irish Pub is indistinguishable from all the other shops and dining establishments situated on Main Street in Ellsworth, Maine. But a surprise of historic significance dwells within this traditional Irish pub, and it isn’t their shepherd’s pie or Scotch eggs. The star of the show at Finn’s is the bar, an original 1930’s Jerry O’Mahony dining car that belonged to a diner in Northport, Maine, before being brought to Ellsworth in 1982. The iconic Jerry O’Mahony dining cars were originally meant to be portable buildings, designed to resemble rail cars. These novel metallic structures were manufactured at the O’Mahony factory in New Jersey, then transported to permanent locations all over the country. Only a dozen or so of these originals exist today. Finn’s is more than a local favorite. It is an architectural onion, with layers upon layers of alterations, each built around an existing structure, made every time the restaurant ownership changed hands. Within a decade of installing the O’Mahony, new owners would put a wood-frame building around the original dining car, calling the restaurant Maidee’s, after the proprietor, Maidee Chang. The establishment changed hands a few more times, until 2009, when a fresh set of owners named it Finn’s Irish Public House. The 1930’s Jerry O’Mahony dining car remains the main feature of the restaurant. The bar-top is made of black marble with red and black tiles ascending to the stone surface. Bottles of single malt brush up against bourbons on the shelves lining the stainless steel back wall, a signature design element of the archetypal O’Mahony dining car. Swivel stools bolted to the floor still seat passengers as they did over 80 years ago. Dark polished wood adorns the sitting area. The Bakelite ceiling is still there, although some modern touches (such as pendant lighting) have been added since. For the lover of dining cars, Finn’s is a must visit, with the reward of a pint of Guinness to be enjoyed with steak and mushroom pie and sticky toffee pudding." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Had the brunch there this morning. So good! The home made Bloody Mary mix was delicious. My wife had the Mimosa flight. I had the Hash Benedict and my wife had the Breakfast sandwich. Delicious!!!

Great dinner and lunch at Finn's! Twice this week 😋 Both servers provided us food recommendations and took good care of us. Meatloaf dinner with potato salad and beets; Irish nachos appetizer (twice so good!), Cork chicken Ruben and friend has the Salt and Pepper haddock dinner with garlic mashed potatoes and beets. We enjoyed everything! Great flavors with the fish and meatloaf and the potato chips in the nachos we're thinking and crispy with bacon, sour cream, jalapenos, salsa and green onions. We had the extra bonus of hearing a few classic rock songs from the live band on Sunday evening too! We will be back for sure.

Google
One of my favorites! I love their food and desserts. Their drinks are also really good. The place does get busy on weekends so be aware there may be a 10-15 minute wait on busy nights. I recommend the Irish Nachos. They are made with their homemade chips and the portion size is generous.

Google
Great food and service.. the wife loved the fish and chips and my steak sub was superb.

To say I was so saddened when Finns closed last year is an understatement. When I heard the news that it was back, and nothing was changed I was so excited. I finally was able to make it over there for a lunch date and wow. Not a thing different and the food still absolutely amazing. The service, amazing. I wouldn't recommend anywhere else in this area for a good lunch or beer on tap.

Google
I feel that since the restaurant has changed owners, the portions have gotten smaller, and prices have gone up. I got a steak grinder that didn't have much steak in it. Maybe a few pieces. The rest was onions, mushrooms, and mostly bread. $21 for bread and chips. The best thing that we had their was Mason's Cream Ale. Don't think we'll be back, unfortunately. Used to love this place.

Google
Had a little family celebration and everyone was pleased with their food. The Fish & Chips were excellant and the Shepards Pie was great. Several of pur party were more than happy with their burgers. Service was great.

Delicious, fresh food served relatively quickly! Raena was our server and was she fantastic and attentive!

Yelp
Finn's has been a staple in the Ellsworth area and for good reason - it's always great. You never have to worry about a bad meal here, you can tell they really care about the quality of their food. Definitely get the Irish nachos for an appetizer, they are so good! For entrees: the Meatloaf sandwich, Reuben, Boiled dinner, Shepherd's pie or Finn's famous mac and cheese are all 5 stars. Consistently good every time. Always get the cheesecake. Their drink specials are always creative and tasty as well. Staff are attentive and usually very social and kind. You get the feeling of being at home in this restaurant. Absolutely love this place and always love it when I get the chance to go for dinner!

Yelp
Food was ok. Burger was not well done. But ok. I really wanted to love the blueberry margarita but it was so strong I couldn't drink it. Chairs are hard and uncomfortable. Waitress was great. Chips good. Would try another place if back in the area

Dick M.

Yelp
The Salt and Pepper Haddock was wonderful and my wife liked the fish and chips but would have preferred fries to homemade chips. I also had a rare treat: steamed beets! They were delicious. We enjoyed sitting at the table in the front window and watched the people go by. Service was great and the prices were reasonable

Diane P.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere with good selection of beers and friendly staff. Food was just so-so. Potato salad definitely needed more seasoning. Meatloaf was average.

Karley M.

Yelp
My Family and I came here while on vacation. It's a cute and quaint restaurant that really did feel like an true Irish pub. Guinness pours were perfect and staff was extremely friendly. I had the best haddock chowder I've ever had and my mom loved her boiled dinner. I'd highly recommend coming here for some Irish fare and good drinks!

A K.

Yelp
The service was prompt and friendly. The food: 1. Raw onion and slice of tomato on an average bun and a chicken breast piece was their chicken sandwich for roughly $17. I prefer the wendys or burger king chicken sandwich over this. The side of potato salad was bland. 2. Fish and Chips: this was served with potato chips from a bag and not fries. Were told this is what the Irish call chips. In this case, please write this on your menu so there isn't any confusion. The fried fish was excellent ! 3. I wasn't able to have a nice hot cup of tea because the water provided was not very hot. This tends to happen when a microwave is used to heat up water. Overall, avoid this place...

Heather W.

Yelp
We stopped in here on our way to Bar Harbor. The food was solid; I had a burger and mashed potatoes. Service was quick (although it was Sunday evening so probably not their most crowded time).

Stephanie K.

Yelp
Outstanding service, very accommodating, delicious food and beverages! The grilled brown bread is just like Mum made and delicious!

Yelp
I've been a long-time patron of this establishment, and it's disheartening to observe some recent changes. The turnover in staff, particularly the departure of the original team, has been noticeable, and it's a disappointment. Recently, during busy hours, I observed a lack of support from management as the staff navigated a demanding workload. In fact, I witnessed the owner at the bar while waitstaff struggled to manage the orders. It left me questioning the level of assistance provided during peak times. In the past, the food here was consistently delicious, but I've experienced a decline in quality on the occasions I've visited since the reopening. It would be wonderful to see a return to the high standards I grew to appreciate. While live music can add a vibrant atmosphere, it's essential to consider the overall experience. On a recent Sunday evening, my grandparents and I found it challenging to enjoy our meal and have a conversation due to the proximity of a lively three-person band in a small dining room. It made me wonder if the management has considered the diverse needs of their patrons, especially those seeking a more relaxed environment. I share these observations with the hope that the management will take them into consideration. If improvements aren't made, I seriously doubt this restaurant will survive it's first Maine winter as it's so important in this area to have the support of the locals.

Tony M.

Yelp
So glad they've reopened. The food here was delicious, and the staff was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The atmosphere feels just right for being a nice local pub.

Barkley A.

Yelp
After ready reviews I should have realized they were old . Thought by how crowded the place was it may be still try. After being seated it took 1 of the 3 girls to finally Greet us . Negative service was slow . Ordered the fish and chips Fish batter was heaven and greasy ,fish filet was half the size of the battered item that came out and had zero seasoning/ flavor. The chips were potato chips cold and dry and again zero seasoning. Unfortunately we won't be giving this place another try .

Me M.

Yelp
You do not want bypass this place! Fantastic food, unsurpassed service and genuine friendly atmosphere make your dining experience something that you want to repeat!!

Bruce K.

Yelp
Other than the strangest looking shepherd's pie I've seen, our meal at Finn's was very good. A half hour wait due to the limited capacity (and that's during off-season!) before my phone buzzes that our table was ready. We ended up at the four-top on the slightly raised stage, which was an interesting place to sit. My brother enjoyed his shepherd's pie which arrived in a crock bowl that was filled to the top with a brown gravy. Strange, but he enjoyed it. I did not see much for a keto diet on the menu but our waitress made a recommendation and it worked out well. A deconstructed sandwich with a salad. The meat and cheese was delicious and completely keto-friendly. Not very Irish, but I countered that with a Guinness draft that was a PERFECT pour. A bit loud in the restaurant but a good meal. Note that the dining room entrance is in the rear where there is a huge parking lot. [Review 14878 overall, 380 of 2021, number 61 in Maine.]

Yelp
I was so excited to have Finns reopen!! The menu is the same as before just a little pricier but what isn't these days. My husband and I got the shepherds pie. Not usually something I enjoy but man it was so good. We decided to split it... it wasn't that big. A little disappointing. We got a dessert, a flourless chocolate tort. It was small but so rich you didn't need a big piece. Left happy but not stuffed.. my opinion that's ok on a date night

Brad J.

Yelp
I have been coming to Finn's for the past 10 years and was so excited to hear that is was reopening. Unfortunately the hostess had a crappy attitude and told us it would be an hour wait when half the tables were empty. I pointed out this fact to her and she snapped at me and said the wait has nothing to do with the amount of empty tables. Get your crap together or you won't last long here since you're pissing off the locals.

Amber L.

Yelp
I had a hard time deciding what to rate Finns. We've been a few times over the last several years, and it's always been delicious. But this last week when we went for lunch we got our usual boiled dinner and it was a big disappointment. The corned beef was tough and the vegetables were flavorless. We added a lot of salt and ate everything with mustard. I know it recently reopened with new owners so maybe it will improve after a bit?

Kathy V.

Yelp
This was a fabulous restaurant, I'm sorry that it closed to the public during the pandemic. Now it's back open with the owners that owns the airline brewery have to try that out.

Daisy E.

Yelp
Ok. I'm not going to lie. When I first looked at the menu I actually headed next door to Margarita's to eat instead. Boy do I regret that decision! We came back the following night for a REAL treat... First of all, Tony was our server. What an absolute sweetheart!! He had nothing but fantastic recommendations for us. He was definitely not your standard "waiter". He spoke to us like we were regulars, which we appreciated, considering we were from Massachusetts. We ordered three of his suggestions: wings, fish and chips and the spicy margarita. Outside of what was recommended we also got the beer cheese and GIANT soft pretzel, bangers and mash and the creme brûlée. First off- this was my first time trying beer cheese, so I was beyond excited. I hate pretzels, however. Guess what?? They were BOTH SOOO GOOD!! The pretzel was the size of my giant head and was so soft & salty. It really paired well with the creamy beer cheese. I'd come back just for this appetizer every time. The wings too, actually! I was a little hesitant because I read the word "dill" on the menu but they really tasted more like Buffalo wings with a note of dill at the very end. I think I might be in love.... On to the main event! The Smithwick's beer battered fish and chips... WOW. It was a little different than I'm used to (which was a great thing in this case). The batter was thick and crispy (I'm used to thinner) and the haddock was super moist. Very fresh! I order this meal wherever I go and this is definitely in my top 3 (out of probably 50 others). I was hoping I could switch out the chips for fries because, well, I've never had traditional chips before! I must say I was pleasantly impressed though! They were the BEST and completed the dish perfectly. My fiancé had the bangers and mashed. He said it was good and very traditional. I did not indulge, so I can't relay that in my review. Last, we ended the meal with a MUST try....the creme brûlée. LEAVE ROOM FOR THIS DESSERT! The top was a hard sugar coating while the rest was truly a creamy dream. I might have to stop back in JUST for this before I head back home! 5 stars. Definitely. 6 stars for service!!

Leslie H.

Yelp
Great pub burger w/ beer cheese cooked to order. Fast, friendly service. This was our first stop in Ellsworth.

Shell D.

Yelp
Just reopened.....they're working out the kinks but menu is pretty much the same and it's great to have them back on Main Street

Harold D.

Yelp
I was waiting for Finns to reopen. I knew they did not take reservations in the past. However, upon trying to be seated (party of 5) was told an hour and a half wait. Even though we all saw a table with 5 seats blank. (4 opposed seats and the head of the table). Pointed this out. No explanations. Went elsewhere.

Robert W.

Yelp
Good Night Irene !! The long term 'VID' killed it. Saying goodbye to my favorite summer haunt of the past 10 years. Good luck to the owners, who hung on for the past 2 of 'em.

Jason F.

Yelp
I stopped by here last month with my wife for dinner. We were on our way from Portland to Lubec and it was dinner time and so we decided to look for a place to eat. So I consulted Yelp and after trying to find something with seafood to no avail, I eventually found Finn's Irish Pub. My wife wasn't too pleased at going to an Irish place in Maine but the reviews said it was good. Whenever we entered the place was packed and we were asked if we were ok to be seated in the bar area which we were. The bar area was actually pretty cool as it was made from an old train car. So even though it was a little tight in places, it was certainly unique. Besides that they also had a large dining room which was full on the day we were there. For dinner on this evening my wife and I decided to start by splitting a scotch egg. Then for dinner I went with one of the specials, the Wexford cakes while my wife opted for a an avocado and crab salad. Our scotch egg came out first and was decent enough. The outside breading wasn't as flavorful as I would have liked but at least they had a nice aoili on the plate to use as a dipping sauce. Once we were done with that our entrees came out and they both looked quite good. My wife's salad had a bunch of crab on it as well as the avocado, cucumber, tomato and croutons while my Wexford cakes (fish and potatoes) came with a giant side of vegetables which turned out to be carrots, cabbage, zucchini and spinach. All of it tasted nicely as well as the Wexford cakes had a nice creamy consistency on the inside and a good crusty exterior. You could taste the fish in them too but they weren't overpowering. As for the vegetables I was super excited for the variety and the amount of green that was on the plate. They tasted good too (probably cooked in butter) and by the time I had finished with my meal I was full and satisfied. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. All of the Yelp reviews were right and by the end of our meal, Finns had won us over.

Katherine N.

Yelp
There aren't too many options in this area and this place isn't bad. The food is very hardy and made well. The shepherd's pie and meatloaf dishes were wonderful, filling and flavorful! The sides were decent. The drinks? I would stick with beer because the cocktails were overly sweet.

Kathryn W.

Yelp
This place is such a great find!! The food is incredible. The service outstanding. The restaurant itself is so clean and cute. I will send others here too to be delighted!!!

Rich Z.

Yelp
This is a cool place with decent beer list. It looks like a rail car on the inside. Lots of fire dept memorabilia. Didn't have food, just Lunch from Maine.

Brittany S.

Yelp
Let me first admit that I was super skeptical about an Irish pub being so darned good in a small town...in Maine...I stand corrected. Finn's Irish pub has not only the vibes but the food down pat. We found our way to a cozy high top along the bar and loved being able to see into the trolley-looking long bar that was enclosed. Such a cool atmosphere! As for the eats, I ordered the corned beef with veggies (carrots, potatoes and cabbage) paired with mustard and a mini soda bread-style cake. My husband had the fried fish and chips. Because we were trying to kill ourselves with this meal, we kicked it all off with the Scottish egg appetizer. Our waitress was great and the meal was mighty tasty from start to finish. I highly recommend if you find yourself rolling through the area looking for a hearty meal and great customer service.

M. M.

Yelp
What a great place. Hoping with locals and day trippers alike. Our server Audrey was on point from start to finish. From the greeting, all through our time there, until time to cash out. She explained the beers extremely well and helped us choose with our feedback on our tastes. Not big eaters so we chose to have the BIG pretzel with cheese and the crab poppers. The pretzel was huge and was hot, chewy, and tasty. The poppers were excellent also with a great mix of crab and filling with just the right batter that wasn't overpowering but golden brown and delicious! The jalapeño aioli was a perfect fit for the crab and we even mixed it with our pretzel cheese for a spicy cheese topping. A great place to enjoy, relax and have a great pub experience with super tasty fare. Stop in for a pint and a great time.

Brande G.

Yelp
We had dinner here and both the food and service were excellent! Highly recommend the oysters, fish and homemade chips and the clam chowder. The staff here were all very friendly and attentive. The bathrooms were clean and all the staff wore masks.

Marie A.

Yelp
I chose this restaurant because of all the good reviews on Yelp, and I was not disappointed! Excellent! Very nice friendly service. Quick seating. We were up in down east Maine for a long weekend and chose a Sunday to explore the local towns. Between the fam and I we had: Mac and cheese with tomato Boiled dinner Fish and chips Shepherds pie All highly recommended! We ate off of each other's plates. This place is definitely a sure bet for dinner!

Sara A.

Yelp
Unfortunately we drove over from Bar Harbor searching for something other than lobster. They are permanently closed!

Brayden C.

Yelp
I've gone here for years, great food and service and great location being right in town. All of the workers you will find are kind and caring to all of there customers

Matt C.

Yelp
Big time fan of thai food. I have been here 3-times. The meatloaf dinner is tremendous. Another time they had just received a keg of the one-time annual release of the Founder's Kentucky Bourbon Stout. And me and my boys had a couple. Then we had to walk back to our hotel afterwards. Note I specify walk, not drive. But from I remember the service, staff... extremely, extremely really good. And food very good too. Now that Airline has opened across the street there is some competition! But, this is still a good spot!

Lori D.

Yelp
The food and service were excellent! So glad we found this restaurant while on vacation.

Nancy M.

Yelp
Our family has been to Finn's several times in the past and suggested we grab some dinner there before we travel back to NH. The food was delicious, our drinks were tasty and service was excellent. I had the shepherds pie- a classic that did not disappoint. It went well with my festive holiday cocktail. Definitely a superb choice over any chain restaurant in Ellsworth.

Thomas I.

Yelp
Never been disappointed. The food has always been great and the atmosphere is comfortable. They have a bar, a dine in area as well as takeout so you can get every bit of service you need to get a meal. The big thing for me is going for dinner and having live music being played. Hearing and seeing that, along with everyone laughing, talking, smiling, and just having a good time, just makes you feel good!!! This is a fantastic place to get a meal and I highly recommend it.

L C.

Yelp
I love this place. Every time I'm up in Ellsworth, I ALWAYS get to Finn's. I love the seafood- the fish cakes, salmon sandwich and fresh oysters. We had the clam chowder a few weeks ago and I wanted to roll over and die. The BEST I've ever had. I got two containers to go. Before my grandfather died, it was a special treat to bring him here. I remember when Finn's opened and we had to get in and try it. Much love to Finn's, always.

Ben S.

Yelp
Loved this place! Service was great. Food was great. Staying open late so we could stop in after watching the sunset at the park was great. Before I talk about the food, I just want to mention the beer. I appreciate when the beer menu is curated. This menu had a fruity beer theme. I mean, not all the beers were fruity but there were enough to allow everyone to find something to love in that category. I found an IPA that didn't taste angry: Foundation Epiphany. I always brace myself for a level of bitterness that would cuss out my mother whenever I taste a new IPA. Instead I found this to be a surprisingly easy-drinking citrus IPA. Steak and Mushroom Pie: the gravy was rich, viscous, and cranked to an 11 on flavor. There was a whole bunch of broth, aromatics, and wine reduced to the consistency of motor oil. Exactly the way it's supposed to be made if you have all the right ingredients, a really big pot, and nothing to do all day. It came with a delicious, flaky pastry to dip or crumble into the bowl. They could become a successful stew house with this as the only menu item. Crab Poppers: battered and fried crab cakes. Everything done right...good crab, good spices, correct amount of binder, and fried correctly. But the tarter sauce made it for me. Jalapeno tarter sauce! Hell yeah!!! It was like the flying nunchuck ninja kick of tarter sauces. Awesome! Mac and Cheese: a layer of tomatoes was baked into the bottom of the bowl. Gave it just enough acidity to cut the richness of the creamy cheese. It's hard to go wrong with mac and cheese, but these guys had the courage to try something different. And it paid off. Virtually high five to the chef!

Kerry D.

Yelp
Finn's is a great pub! I was very pleased to see that they had my favorite( corn beef and cabbage) and my friend had the grilled salmon. The Irish soda bread that came with my meal was to die for with some butter. I also had a bottled orange soda from a local soda company called Maine Root that was very good. My friend had a Creme Brulee for dessert. It wasn't the best we've ever had the custard was a bit runny and the glaze on top was a little too hard. But we loved the atmosphere. Service was a bit slow but it was a Saturday night around 8pm. I'd come here again if I was from the area!

Lily S.

Yelp
Very attentive service but my $8 side of Mac and cheese was barely edible, truly awful not creamy or cheesy, dry, with hunks of.. tomato (?!) sad Found a short black hair in my mediocre shepherds pie, one of their menu staples. The meat in it was incredibly lean, dry and flavorless. Service was attentive tho.

Jessie B.

Yelp
So glad we chose this place on our way back to our Airbnb in Melbridge. I ordered the Steak & Mushroom Pie. Oh my goodness -- SOOOO good! Mango Margarita was generous size and yummy!

Carrie C.

Yelp
Really good. I ordered the Crab and Avocado Salad with a cup of Clam Chowder. My husband had the Haddock Fish Bites with a cup of Chowder. The waitress was super friendly and the atmosphere was authentic. Surprise, great lunch leaving Southwest Harbor in Ellsworth. I do wish they had some local seafood dishes and local items on the menu and that's the only thing that would stop me from going back.

Yelp
This pub came up in my gluten free app. I had a veggie sandwich on a hoagie roll, that was tasty, and gluten free. The fries were not gf, as they used the same fryer as the non gf items. They had two ciders, both were "flavored" and not just plain hard cider. The menu was not Irish pub centric, it was really a regular American choices. The service was good, the person who brought our food out, knew up front who needed gluten free...possibly based on the cider in my hand. :)

Yelp
After a short 20 minute wait, we were seated by the friendliest hostess and the food did NOT disappoint! The Crab Poppers were superb and the Fish & Chips (Smithwicks battered Haddock) was amazing and the Irish burger....yum!! We don't typically order dessert but did and all 4 ordered something different. All of us say ours was best and after tasting them, I'd order any of them again. German Chocolate Cake, Chocolate Guinness Cake, Sticky Toffee Pudding Cake and Creme Brûlée. You can't go wrong. And if you get the opportunity, ask for Bailey cause she was amazing and her service was impeccable - and they were busy as heck!!

Yelp
Inside it doesn't really look like an Irish pub but the service is great and the Ruben sandwich was delicious! Highly recommend that sandwich! Guinness was poured perfectly as well!

Yelp
Arriving for a late dinner, Finn's Irish Pub only offers a shortened menu. The hostess made it abundantly clear. It was almost like she didn't want us to come in for a meal but seated us anyway. The substandard service continued through our meal as we didn't see our waitress but only to order and to pay the bill. It's a pub right? Maybe I wanted more than just one drink. Again it made us feel as if our business was unwanted. I ordered the Irish nachos. Thick cut potato chips topped with cheese, peppers, onions, tomatoes and sour cream. They were ok but the balance in toppings threw it off. There was definitely room for improvement. According to the rave reviews I am hoping it was just an off night.

Yelp
Irish pub on the main street in Ellsworth. Wood paneled walls decorated with beer tap pulls. The bar itself is an old dining car and is crowded and quaint. It is separated from the dining areas by walls and windows since the restaurant was built up around the old diner There is a good and extensive beer selection both on tap and bottled with both Guinness and Smithwicks my standbys in pubs in Ireland. There is often a wait for tables and you have to walk past the bar to the back to leave your name. Like many places in Maine they are understaffed which slows things down but service is friendly, willing and accurate. The food is good. Burgers are big and correctly cooked on a nice potatoe roll. Choice of sides include garlic mashed potatoes or great home cut and fried crisps. Shepherd's pie is a treat. Steak and mushroom pie was chock filled with sliced mushrooms and tender beef in a red wine sauce. Delicious even without the kidneys I would expect in England or Ireland. The "crust" was a square of beautifully brown and crisp puff pastry place loosely on top not attached to the bowl. It was good nevertheless. Noise level was moderate All in all a delightful place.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, decent prices, good service, excellent food. Nice place for lunch or dinner. Had the Reuben sandwich was was one of the best I have had in quite a while. My wife had the chicken avocado wrap which she thought was wonderful. We both tried the sage potato salad and wished we had picked a different side. Excellent bar selection and live entertainment on many summer nights.

Yelp
Walked in one hour prior to closing on a Friday night with a party of 8 and was told they couldn't seat us. Looked to us like they had the room but they did not feel like staying open - which was 8pm, not 11pm as advertised. So we took our business across the street to the British Pub. Don't waste your time walking around back and trying to support an establishment that apparently doesn't need it.
