We checked out of this beautiful hotel this morning. It is in a remarkable position, accessible by train only , overlooking lakes hills and glaciers. We booked directly with the hotel via email and booked the ' Rallar Package' ( 3 nights dinner , packed lunch and breakfast with one day bike hire included) We booked one of the more expensive rooms overlooking the glaciers. It was wonderful.Lovely views , I culd have just sat in bed all day looking at it. Comfy bed with lovely linen and duvets, a little sofa area also overlooking the glaciers and a decent shower. The breakfast was better than any we have had in Norway with plenty of fish and cheese if you want it , salads , mueseli etc , toast , pastries, eggs , smoked salmon, coffee , tea juices etc. Our packed lunches were very welcome on the hikes and bike days. Two decent sandwiches , a piece of fruit and a flask of coffee ( bring your own thermos) Dinner was also really nice , tasty with vegetarian options if you want them. My only criticism here would be hat the menu did not really change over the three days we were there so had we stayed longer may have been repetetive. But there was a choice of 3 starters , 3 mains ( plus specials you could pay extra for) and three deserts. The wine prices were surprisingly the same as we had paid in Bergen. Given the remote location you could have expected a mark up. |The staff were to a person excellent. From the booking process on line to people at check in , restaurant staff and the legendary AK who will take you wild swimming in the glacier fed lake at 7 am monday to saturday. ( At 5degreses C you can only stay in for a few minutes but then stand around a fire on reindeer skins drinking coffee.) My husband went every day, I went once then watched from our room thereafter!! ||We did two hikes from the hotel, there are maps there and the staff are really helpful with advice on which route depending on how long you want to go for. The Rallarvegan bike ride was the absolute highlight of our 3 1/2 week holiday. Its not called the most beautiful bike route in the world for nothing. It was a bit showery on our day but this made the waterfalls breathtaking. There is a nice little hotel the Vatnahalsen near Myrdal and you can get coffee and cake in there if you need. When you get to Flam you just leave the bikes by the station and get the next train back to Finse. ||We were so sad to leave today. The lovvely staff made us feel so welcome and told us about other seasons and the changes in scenery - lots of snow in winter / spring and the Norwegian national day in May. ||We will definitely go back. I just do not understand the negative reviews ad I am so glad I ignored them. Price wise it is pretty standard for Norway and as with any hotel you pay extra for a room with a nice view. I know of no hotel in which you can eat your own food in public area and this hotel is no different. Norway is generally expensive and we felt the prices were in line with what we expected.
